Abstract:
Background: The ABO blood group and Rhesus (Rh) factor remain the most important blood group in transfusion medicine. Knowledge of ABO and rhesus blood group distribution within a population is indispensable for transfusion medicine, clinical and marriage counselling. Aims and Objectives: The objectives of this study were to provide data and compare the pattern of ABO and rhesus blood group distribution between a homogenous and a heterogenous population. Material and Methods: Blood was collected from 352 University students representing a heterogenous population and 235 primary school pupils in a local community representing homogenous population. The ABO and rhesus blood groups were determined using white tile and agglutination methods. Results: Among the 352 and 235 individuals studied in UNN and HFNP, blood groups O had the highest frequency with 54.80% and 51.06% respectively while blood group AB had the least frequency of 4.50% and 3.40% in UNN and HFNP respectively. Rhesus positive had the highest frequency of 88.63% and 95.33% while rhesus negative had the frequencies of 11.35% and 4.68% in UNN and HFNP respectively. Rhesus negative was highest among females in UNN 26 (7.37%) while males had the highest rhesus negative 7 (2.98%) in HFNP. In both study populations, there was no significant difference in ABO and rhesus blood group distribution between the males and females (P > 0.05). Conclusions: A homogenous population is associated with low prevalence of rhesus negative compared to a heterogenous population.

Abstract:
This research investigates and analysed generic Wireless Local Area Networks (IEEE 802.11a/b/g) in the context of their Quality of Service (QoS) in high density networks using some generic Key Performance Indicators (KPI) such as throughput (Bytes/Sec), Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), and latency response (secs). The study focused on University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) which houses several hostels and faculties. Using Applied Research Methodology (ARM), this work characterized a real life generic hotspot testbed (UNN) for Received Signal Strength (RSS), mobile node distance, latency and throughput using Tranzio-Wavion Minipop Infrastructure in UNN as the network testbed. In this study, after sampling the selected KPIs, data were collected via our testbed measurements from the test nodes, Network Switching system/Network Operating Centres (NOCs) and their values were evaluated for an assessment study. The KPI results obtained showed that the traditional generic WLAN will scarcely scale in high density traffic environment in terms of scalability, speed performance (network convergence), cost, and other selected KPIs. This will lead to a proposal on a conceptual framework for Cognitive High Density Hotspot (CHDN) in our future work, which will address the limitations of generic WLANs for enterprise computing.

AbstractSince 2012, the Radiophysical Research Institute and the Lobachevsky State University at Nizhny Novgorod, Russia and the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre at Irbene, Latvia are making radio interferometric experiments on study of ionosphere parameters in a quiet (natural) state of medium and research of artificial turbulence of the ionosphere, heated by the emission from the SURA facility. Remote diagnostics of the ionosphere is implemented using a method of radio sounding by signals of navigation satellites in combination with the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) method. As a result of spectral and correlation analysis, interferometric responses of the two-element (RRI–UNN) and three-element (RRI–UNN–Irbene) interferometers were received by observations of 12 satellites of the navigation systems GLONASS and GPS. Here the first results are reported.

Abstract:
Background: Apparently healthy individuals could serve as reservoirs and disseminators of extendedspectrum cephalosporin (ESC)- and cephamycin (cefoxitin, FOX)-resistant, and extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing (ESBL-P) Escherichia coli which jeopardizes antibacterial therapy thereby posing a threat to the health of infected individuals/carriers. Objectives: This study aimed to screen healthy asymptomatic students in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as potential reservoirs of ESC- and FOX-resistant and ESBL-P E. coli and to determine the antibacterial resistance profile. Materials and Methods: Anal swabs were collected from 190 randomly selected healthy asymptomatic students of both genders in UNN between March and July 2018. ESC-resistant E. coli was isolated using MacConkey agar with 2 µg/mL ceftazidime. ESBL production was assessed by combination disc method while cephamycin resistance was determined using cefoxitin disc screening. Phenotypic resistance of the isolates was determined using disc diffusion method. Results: Out of 190 samples, 20 (10.2%) demonstrated growth. Of these, 6 (30%) were FOX resistant (putative AmpC-producers) but none produced ESBL. The resistance of the isolates was 100% to ampicillin (AMP), 95% to ceftazidime (CAZ), tetracycline (TET) and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (SXT), 30% to FOX and chloramphenicol (CHL), 85% to ciprofloxacin (CIP), enrofloxacin (ENR) and streptomycin (STR), and 65% to kanamycin (KAN). All the isolates were susceptible to meropenem (MEM). Among the 20 isolates, 1 (5%) was resistant to 2 classes of antibacterial agents while 19 (95%), including all the FOX-resistant strains, were resistant to ≥ 3 classes of antibacterial agents. The isolates exhibited 11 multiple antibacterial resistance patterns with AMP, CAZ, FOX, TET, CIP, ENR, STR, KAN, SXT being predominant. Conclusion: Healthy asymptomatic students in UNN are potential reservoirs and disseminators of ESC- and cephamycin (FOX)-resistant E. coli.

Abstract:
Introduction Decentralised services through outreach clinics or modern technology reduce patient travel time and cost to society. Telemedicine consultation through videoconference is one such modality. Here, we compared patient-reported health outcomes and satisfaction between video-assisted remote and standard face-to-face orthopaedic consultations. Methods This randomised controlled trial included two parallel groups: (1) patients receiving video-assisted remote consultation at a regional medical centre (RMC); and (2) patients receiving standard consultation at the orthopaedic outpatient clinic of the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN). This study included patients referred to or scheduled for a consultation at the orthopaedic outpatient clinic. After each consultation, patient satisfaction was determined using patient-completed questionnaires containing questions on patient-reported health (three-level European quality of life five-dimension index (EQ-5D-3L)/European quality of life visual analogue scale (EQ-VAS)) and questions from a validated OutPatient Experiences Questionnaire (OPEQ). Results This study included 389 patients, of which 199 received remote consultation and 190 received standard consultation (total of 559 consultations). In all, 99% RMC-randomised patients and 99% UNN-randomised patients evaluated the consultation as very satisfactory or satisfactory. Moreover, 86% RMC-randomised patients preferred video-assisted consultation as the next consultation. No difference was observed in patient-reported health after 12 months between the two groups. EQ-5D index scores were 0.77 and 0.75 for RMC- and UNN-randomised patients, respectively ( p = 0.42). Discussion We did not observe any difference in patient-reported satisfaction and health (EQ-5D/EQ-VAS) between video-assisted and standard consultations, suggesting that video-assisted remote consultation can be safely offered to some orthopaedic patients. Moreover, a significantly high proportion of patients selected video-assisted remote consultation as their next consultation, thus strengthening the findings of this study. However, economic aspects should be assessed before widely recommending video-assisted consultation.

Abstract:
Hybrid PV/Wind power system can be used to generate electricity consumed in household. This paper presents the design of a stand-alone Hybrid PV/Wind energy system for a household in University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in Eastern Nigeria with a daily load of 5.2kwh/d. Solar and wind resources for the design of the system were obtained from the NASA Surface Meteorology and solar energy website at a location of 6° 51' N latitude and 7° 24' E longitude, with annual average solar radiation of 4.92kWh/m2/d and annual average wind speed of 2.1m/s. The study is based on modeling, simulation and optimization of energy system in UNN. The model was designed to provide an optimal system configuration based on hour-by-hour data for energy availability and demands. Energy source, energy storage and their applicability in terms of cost and performance are discussed. The Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software is used to study and design the proposed stand-alone Hybrid PV/Wind power system model. The designed Hybrid PV/Wind was compared to gasoline generator in order to choose the best energy system for the household. Total Net Present Cost (NPC) and impact on the environment are used as indices for measuring the optimization level of each energy solution. Simulation results show the Hybrid PV/Wind option ($317,907; 0 tonnes of CO2) to be superior to conventional solution ($374,237; 2.049 tonnes of CO2) whereby gasoline generators are currently used to power household around Nigeria.

Abstract:
When n coherent pulses us against additive independent noises un are received, n voltages us + un1, …, us + unn can be obtained in the outputs of a delay line. After addition of these voltages in the matched filter, an improvement of the signal-to-noise ratio SNR is obtained due to random character of summation of the noises and in-phase summation of the signal pulses. As a result, the signal power increases faster than the noise power. However, availability of n pointed voltages enables us to use another processing. It is based on a selection of one of these and of their mean voltages in accordance with its characteristic feature. As shown in the paper, the SNR improvement can be achieved if the selection of the maximum and minimum voltages is performed. The maximum SNR value is obtained by the selection of the noises with the minimum instantaneous power. In this case, the SNR improvement exceeds the one obtained by summation. The results are confirmed by modeling.

Abstract Critics have interpreted Tarjei Vesaas’s novel The Ice Palace (1963) in psychological terms as a kind of rite-of-passage fable of two eleven-year-old girls, Siss and Unn. The latter dies in a magic Ice Palace short after their first meeting in Unn’s house. The novel’s plot is about how Siss is dealing with the loss. Other scholars put the emphasis on the folkloristic elements or read the text as an allegorical one, as a piece of art dealing with art. In the following article I would like to read The Ice Palace as a poetic treatise on the relationship between mourning, melancholy on the one hand and commemoration, memorialization on the other.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to identify the digital literacy skills possessed by the students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the extent to which they use these digital literacy skills in their academic works. Design/methodology/approach Descriptive survey was adopted for the study, and the population consists of registered students that use the mobile telephone network (MTN) digital library, out of which 10 per cent of the population (281) was sampled for the study. A structured questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The questionnaire was randomly administered on the respondents who come to use the MTN digital library with particular attention to the different levels of the students. The questionnaire distribution lasted for a week; 281 copies of questionnaire were distributed, out which 184 (65 per cent) responded. Findings The study showed that some of the students possess digital literacy skills; they use these digital literacy skills daily. Majority of the respondents indicated that digital literacy has affected their academic performance to a high extent. The major challenges of acquiring digital literacy skills include electricity failure, low internet bandwidth, ICT facilities, lack of development of digital literacy programme and standard. Practical implications Implication of this study is that the establishment by MTN has enhanced the development of digital literacy in UNN as many students utilize these facilities. Originality/value Librarians and library staff should be adequately equipped with digital literacy skills and competencies to empower them to train and educate users, as information and communication technology (ICT) is a major tool for teaching, learning and research. To achieve this goal, there is a need to engage in public private partnership collaboration to sponsor the provision of these ICT facilities in our institutions of higher learning to enhance literacy learning for national development.

Abstract:
Traffic congestion is a major problem around the world that results in slower speeds, increased trip time, and a longer queuing of vehicles. The production and use of fuels for vehicles results in emissions of greenhouse gases (GHSs), besides carbon dioxide, which include methane and nitrous oxide. Traffic lights that wirelessly keep track of vehicles could reduce journey time and fuel consumption thereby reducing carbon emissions. In view of the importance of vehicles as an emitter of GHGs, namely CO2, with the growing concern about climate change, this paper aims to explore the emission of CO2 from vehicles at a traffic intersection for the purpose of reducing emission rate. Realizing this reduction, points to the implementation of an Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) with Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) on the road network of a region will be discussed. With such a technology, a region can experience lower queue lengths at an intersection and therefore lower CO2 emission surrounding the area. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) is used as a case study in exploring this phenomenon which over the years has seen a drastic increase on the amount of cars on the campus area. With the assumption that an ATM system with WSNs is deployed on the UNN campus area, the paper looks into the traffic dynamics that makes it possible to evaluate CO2 emission at traffic light intersections to ensure a cleaner environment. Throughout the paper, it will be made clear that with the relevant equation of CO2 emission and the arrival time per vehicle, CO2 emission rate can be evaluated at a traffic intersection depending on the volume of cars at the intersection. With such evaluation, further analysis can be made on ways to actually reduce CO2 emission and techniques for implementation with an ATM system.

Abstract:
Sixty healthy gilts comprising 15 Landrace (LR), Large White (LW} and LW x Hampshire (HS) breeds respectively, were selected from Federal Government (FG) breeding center at Okpuje near Nsukka and University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) farms. They were bred through 4 years (1993 to 1996) during which management effects on fertility were assessed. Gilts were mated on observation of third cyclic oestrus and at subsequent postweaning oestrus. Fertility was assessed from vital reproductive traits due to dams and offsprings. All gilts had successful first and second parity breeding. Thereafter there were increasing cases of abortion and anoestrus particularly among purebred groups in FG farms. Generally, 8 (53.3%), 6 (40.0%), 10 (66.7%) and 13 (86.7%) out of 15 dams in respective groups could attain fifth parity within four years. Both groups exhibited long breeding Intervals (ranging from 192-268 days). Purebred LW and LR offspring had slightly lower mean litter size of 8.5 ± 1.8 and 8.8 ± 1.5 compared with 9.5 ± 0.9 and 9.7 ± 1.4 (P<0.05) for LW x LR and LW x HS crossbred counterparts respectively, Birth and weaning weights and daily weight gain were similarly lower for purebred than crossbred offsprings. Attendant mortality rates of 13.1% and 15.7% for the former were significantly higher than 9.8% and 10.1% (<O.05) obtained for the latter offsprings respectively. The FG farm was more understocked, underutilized and undermanaged than the UNN farm probably because of inconsistencies arising from administrative bureaucracy. Consequently constraints are identified for improvement through efficient resources inputs, staff incentives and application of modern strategic management techniques recommended for tropical environment. Further research into stocking Hamphsire crossbred pigs in the tropics is suggested, in view of its favourable performance.

Continuing professional development is a term regularly used and accepted in today's professional environment, and a concept recognised by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). In 1995 it established its CVE initiatives, and made funding available to organisations wishing to pursue related research and activities. The Department of Information and Library Management (DILM) at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle (UNN),was successful in attracting some of this funding, over a four year period. The first year's funding was used for this survey of records management practitioners in England, to assess their training and education needs in relation to CVE and to begin planning for training provision to meet the needs identified.

Abstract:
This study aimed to assess the persistence and horticultural value of bunch dichotomy in plantain. Meristematic tissue was collected from a plant of the cultivar UNN showing a double-bunch phenotype and cultured in vitro. Ninety-five seedlings were acclimatized for 6 to 8 weeks in a greenhouse, prior to transfer to the field. Field evaluation was carried out at three experimental farms (Abuja, Ibadan, and Onne) of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, in Nigeria. Micropropagated plants of two plantain accessions, `Agbagba' and `Obino l'ewai', that produce single bunches were included as controls. Reversal of the double-bunch phenotype to a single-bunch phenotype was observed. Few plants underwent an additional dichotomization event to produce three bunches. This suggests that branching may be due to random genetic events instead of a stable mutation. Furthermore, field performance data were not significantly different for phenological or yield traits between clones producing one, two, or three bunches. Thus, selection for increased number of bunches may not be warranted in this Musa population.

Abstract:
AbstractBackground and aimsA bio-psycho-social approach has been recommended in multidisciplinary pain clinics, and in Norway patients with severe chronic nonmalignant pain (CNMP, defined as pain that has persisted for more than 3 months) might be treated at a regional multidisciplinary pain center. The specific aims of this study were (1) to describe characteristics of a sample of outpatients referred and accepted for treatment/management to three regional multidisciplinary pain centers in Norway, (2) to examine patient differences between the centers and (3) to study associations between symptom scores (insomnia, fatigue, depression, anxiety) and patient characteristics.MethodsPatients, aged 17 years or older with CNMP admitted to and given a date for first consultation at one of three tertiary, multidisciplinary pain centers: St. Olavs Hospital Trondheim University Hospital (STO), Haukeland University Hospital (HUS) and University Hospital of North Norway (UNN), were included in the study. Data on demographics, physical activity, characteristics of pain, previous traumatic events, social network, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Chalder Fatigue Questionnaire (CFQ), Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25) and SF-36v2® were retrieved from the local quality registry at each pain center.ResultsData from 1563 patients [mean age 42 (SD 15) years and 63% females] were available for analyses. Average years with pain were 9.3 (SD 9.1). Primary education as highest level of education was reported by 20%, being actively working/student/military by 32%, and no physical activity by 31%. Further, 48% reported widespread pain, 61% reported being exposed to serious life event(s), and 77% reported having a close friend to talk to. Non-worker status, no physical activity, lack of social network, reports of being exposed to serious life event(s) and widespread pain were all characteristics repeatedly associated with clinically high symptom scores. No significant differences between the centers were found in the proportions of patients reporting fatigue nor mean levels of insomnia symptoms. However, the proportion of patients reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression was a little lower at UNN compared with STO and HUS.ConclusionsAnalyses of registry data from three tertiary multidisciplinary pain centers in Norway support previous findings from other registry studies regarding patient characterized: A large proportion being women, many years of pain, low employment rate, low physical activity rate, and a large proportion reporting previous traumatic event(s). Characteristics such as non-work participation, no physical activity, lack of social network, have been exposed to serious life event(s), and chronic widespread pain were all associated with high clinical score levels of insomnia, fatigue, and mental distress. Health related quality of life was low compared to what has been reported for a general population and a range of other patient groups.ImplicationsThe findings of this study indicate that physical activity and work participation might be two important factors to address in the rehabilitation of patients with chronic non-malignant pain. Future studies should also explore whether pre consultation self-reported data might give direction to rehabilitation modalities.

Abstract:
Aim - to develop a hardware-software complex with combined command-proportional control of robotic devices based on electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Materials and methods. EMG and EEG signals are recorded using our original units. The system also supports a number of commercial EEG and EMG recording systems, such as NVX52 (MCS ltd, Russia), DELSYS Trigno (Delsys Inc, USA), MYO Thalmic (Thalmic Labs, Canada). Raw signals undergo preprocessing and feature extraction. Then features are fed to classifiers. The interpretation unit controls robotic devices on the base of classified EEG- and EMG-patterns and muscle effort estimation. The number of controlled devices includes mobile robot LEGO NXT Mindstorms (LEGO, Denmark), humanoid robot NAO (Aldebaran, France) and exoskeleton Ilia Muromets (UNN, Russia). Results. We have developed and tested an interface combining command and proportional control based on EMG signals. We have determined the parameters providing optimal characteristics of classification accuracy of EMG patterns, as well as the speed and accuracy of proportional control. Also we have developed and tested a BCI interface based on motor imagined patterns. Both EMG and EEG interfaces are included into hardware and software system. The system combines outputs of the interfaces and sends commands to a robotic device. Conclusion. We have developed and approved the hardware-software system on the basis of the combined command-proportional EMG and EEG control of external robotic devices.

Abstract:
The development of rural settlements is interrelated with the state of population reproduction. Various aspects of life in rural areas, including the development of its economic and social sphere, are usually described by demographic indicators. The deterioration of economic and social conditions in rural areas increases the migration behavior of rural residents. Young people aged 18–35 are most susceptible to migration aspirations. The negative social changes that have been taking place in the Republic of Kalmykia for three decades (1990–2010) have significantly affected the irrevocable migration of young people to other regions of Russia, as well as to foreign countries. Youth unemployment, growing social stratification, and a prolonged lack of social elevators increase the gap between actively advertised opportunities for success, a career in 2–-30 years, and the social experience of the younger generation. Rural youth of the Republic of Kalmykia have long been deprived of the necessary resources to realize themselves on their native land. This article deals with the problems related to the desire / unwillingness of rural youth of the Republic of Kalmykia to work in the agricultural sector, migration behavior, and life strategies of young people. Natives of the village, for the most part, do not want to engage in agricultural work, to continue the traditions of their ancestors in raising livestock. The article concludes that the measures taken in the region to address the personnel policy in the agricultural sector are ineffective. Young livestock and plant breeders need state support, as they ensure the country's food security not only in the near future, but also in the long term. The author uses materials of the Republican newspaper "Halmg unn" for 2019, which reveal the problems of young villagers, their plans to engage in animal husbandry – the traditional type of work of the Kalmyks.
