Background: In the Netherlands, unrestricted access to direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) halved the incidence of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections among HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM). To develop strategies that can further reduce the spread of HCV, it is important to understand the transmission dynamics of HCV. We used phylogenetic analysis of a dense sample of MSM to provide insight into the impact of unrestricted access to DAAs on HCV transmission in the Netherlands and in Belgium. Methods: We included 89 MSM that were recently infected with HCV genotype 1a in ten Dutch a

Coherent texts are not just simple sequences of clauses and sentences, but rather complex artifacts that have highly elaborate rhetorical structure. This paper explores the extent to which well-formed rhetorical structures can be automatically derived by means of surface-form-based algorithms. These algorithms identify discourse usages of cue phrases and break sentences into clauses, hypothesize rhetorical relations that hold among textual units, and produce valid rhetorical structure trees for unrestricted natural language texts. The algorithms are empirically grounded in a corpus analysis of

Summary This work demonstrates the assignment of multi-word expressions in print dictionaries to POS classes with minimal linguistic resources. In this application, 32,000 entries from the Wörterbuch der deutschen Idiomatik (H. Schemann 1993) were classified using an inductive description of POS sequences in conjunction with a Brill Tagger trained on manually tagged idiomatic entries. This process assigned categories to 86% of entries with 88% accuracy. This classification supplies a meaningful preprocessing step for further applications: the resulting POS-sequences for all idiomatic entries m

The objective is to propose novel methods which differ from the traditional kinematics/dynamics formulations and image based reconstruction methods to provide an alternative highly automated way for human animation from the most widely available source that records human movements and activities. Such methods should be relatively low-cost while avoiding many l

AbstractPlant genetic resources are source genetic material for conducting research and breeding. The use of this material is subject to international and national regulations on access and benefit-sharing (ABS). With modern genetic technologies generating desired trait and gene function improvement by replicating genetic signatures, ABS must adapt to the new technological reality. As the constituencies of international ABS conventions discuss if and how to extend the application of the conventions to digital sequence information (DSI) derived from source material, the genomics science communi

Abstract In a sequence of recent publications ([3],[4],[5],[6],[2]), Hartry Field has developed a new and sophisticated account of how to approach the problem of semantic paradoxes. The core of his theory is a theory of truth for languages that contain their own truth predicate, but Field has also shown how analogous type-free theories for satisfaction ([2]), property instantiation ([5]), and definability ([2]) can be introduced. Moreover, the theory can perhaps also be used to give consistent syntactic treatments of modalities in terms of modal predicates of sentences (cf. section 9 on design

Research in abstract argumentation typically per-tains to finite argumentation frameworks (AFs). Ac-tual or potential infinite AFs frequently occur if theyare used for the purpose of nonmonotonic entail-ment, so-called instantiation-based argumentation,or if they are involved as modeling tool for dia-logues, n-person-games or action sequences. Apartfrom these practical cases a profound analysis yieldsa better understanding of how the nonmonotonic the-ory of abstract argumentation works in general.
