Abstract:
S-Adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) participates in a wide range of methylation and other group-transfer reactions and also serves as the precursor for two groups of quorum-sensing molecules that function as regulators of the production of virulence factors in Gram-negative bacteria. The synthesis of AdoMet is catalyzed by AdoMet synthetases (MATs), a ubiquitous family of enzymes found in species ranging from microorganisms to mammals. The AdoMet synthetase from the bacteriumCampylobacter jejuni(cjMAT) is an outlier among this homologous enzyme family, with lower sequence identity, numerous insertions and substitutions, and higher catalytic activity compared with other bacterial MATs. Alterations in the structure of this enzyme provide an explanation for its unusual dimeric quaternary structure relative to the other MATs. Taken together with several active-site substitutions, this new structure provides insights into its improved kinetic properties with alternative substrates.

Abstract:
This study examines the empirical relationship between unusual trading volume and earnings surprises in China’s A-share market. We provide evidence that an unusually low trading volume can signify negative information about firm fundamentals. Moreover, unusual trading volumes could predict abnormal returns close to the earnings announcement date. The degree of, and changes in, divergence of opinion could explain this result. Our study provides an insight into China’s market, where short sales are strictly forbidden. We report a strong relationship that is quite different from that described in most studies on the United States market.

Abstract:
By employing the furan annulation protocol, a new series of furan-containing teraryl [n.2]cyclophenes (n = 2-6 and 12) are prepared. These cyclophenes exhibit charge-transfer character in the absorption spectra and unusually large Stokes shifts in the emission spectra. They have neither particularly strong electron-donating moieties nor electron-withdrawing groups, but exhibit unusual second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The π-systems in teraryl system and in the bridging double bond are highly twisted. Interaction between these twisted π-systems may account for the significant enhancement in hyperpolarizability. Thiophene analog behaved similarly. The five-membered heteroaromatic rings may not only serve as electron donors, but also may accommodate the appropriate geometry to enable the interactions between the oligoaryl systems and the double bond leading to unusual photophysical and NLO properties.

Abstract:
AbstractCapital punishment by lethal injection, which was expected to be the most safe and effective of available methods, can produce unusually cruel and inhuman death. In Heckler v. Chaney, inmates sentenced to death by lethal injection, as well as members of both the medical and legal communities, challenged the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) refusal to regulate certain drugs used for capital punishment by lethal injection. By declining to review the FDA’s nonenforcement decision, the Supreme Court also declined an opportunity to reevaluate its standard for determining cruel and unusual punishment, which upholds any method of execution that is no more unusually cruel than existing methods. This Comment examines the propriety of judicial and administrative regulation of capital punishment by lethal injection.

By 1974, northern England had become one of Europe's most urbanized areas, though it had very few towns in 1500. However, the dense population of the industrial regions lived in towns which were unusually crowded together and which had not developed conventional hierarchical structures. No dominant northern metropolis ever emerged, and this unusual urban system displayed intense rivalry at all levels. Was this coincidental, or can it help explain the region's nineteenth-century dynamism?

In addition, there are very strong gender effects even when the other factors are controlled, indicating direct gender pay differences.

Background. Abdominal masses in female adolescents are uncommon. A rare cause of this condition is hematocolpos due to imperforate hymen.Case. We present a case of an unusually massive asymptomatic abdominal bulk in a 14-year-old female patient, who sought for medical advice after unusual abdominal pain lasting for few weeks. The patient was otherwise asymptomatic, apart from an unusual dramatic expansion of her abdominal wall during the last month. We describe the surgical management and the follow-up of the patient.Summary and Conclusion. Clinicians should keep in mind that an imperforate hymen can cause abdominal growth due to hematocolpos and include it in the differential diagnosis of such a clinical entity in female adolescents. 2D ultrasound is usually efficient for the confirmation of the diagnosis of hematocolpos, but 3D ultrasound is more accurate. Wide excision should be undertaken, as an initial approach, to avoid recurrence.

Abstract. The Arctic stratosphere throughout the late winter and early spring of 2011 was characterized by an unusually severe ozone loss, resulting in what has been described as an ozone hole. The 2011 ozone loss was made possible by unusually cold temperatures throughout the Arctic stratosphere. Here we consider the issue of what constitutes suitable environmental conditions for the formation and maintenance of a polar ozone hole. Our discussion focuses on the importance of the stratospheric wind field and, in particular, the importance of a high latitude zonal jet, which serves as a meridional transport barrier both prior to ozone hole formation and during the ozone hole maintenance phase. It is argued that stratospheric conditions in the boreal winter/spring of 2011 were highly unusual inasmuch as in that year Antarctic-like Lagrangian dynamics led to the formation of a boreal ozone hole.

Abstract:
Specification of the posterior body plan in Drosophila requires the action of a determinant prelocalized to the posterior pole of the embryo. During embryogenesis this determinant appears to move anteriorly in a process dependent on the pumilio (pum) gene. This report describes the cloning and molecular characterization of a cDNA derived from the pum gene, and the analysis of pum mRNA and protein expression during early Drosophila development. The pum gene is unusually large; comparison of genomic and cDNA sequences reveals that the pum transcription unit is at least 160 kb in length. The pum cDNA encodes a 157 × 10(3) M(r) protein which consists mainly of regions enriched in a single amino acid, usually glycine, alanine, glutamine or serine/threonine. Six tandem repeats of a 36 amino acid repeat unit are also present. Pum protein is cytoplasmic and is concentrated in a subcortical region of the embryo. The distribution of pum protein exhibits no asymmetry along the anteroposterior axis of the embryo.

High metallicities are also signaled by strong N Vλ1240 emission, consistent with quasar behavior at z ≈ 2–3.

Abstract The quasi experiment of deviations from normal temperatures shows how local temperature conditions bias selected survey results. Responses in eight CBS News surveys from 2001 to 2007 change with the weather, with unseasonable temperatures reducing concern about climate change and unusually warm temperatures increasing presidential approval. Unusual temperatures also influence who answers surveys; wealthier respondents are overrepresented in warmer conditions. These results jointly suggest that surveys are at risk for temperature-induced response bias. Weighting-based methods can account for survey results’ temperature-induced differences in samples.

AbstractAnalyses of grinding tools at Cerro Portezuelo provide an unusual opportunity to study changing subsistence priorities. Evidence in the Teotihuacan and Mezquital Valley indicates that established patterns of dependence on maize may have been interrupted during the Epiclassic and Early Postclassic periods. Grinding tool collections in both locations contain unusually high frequencies of closed-surface grinding tools (trough metates and mortars), which are less efficient for intensive maize grinding than the open-surface tools commonly used during both the Classic and Late Postclassic periods. While analyzing the Cerro Portezuelo grinding tool collection presents many problems because of imprecise chronology, this collection also contains an unusually high frequency of closed-surface tools that can be attributed to its Epiclassic and Early Postclassic inhabitants. Thus, Cerro Portezuelo contributes to a growing picture of subsistence after the collapse of Teotihuacan in which maize was deemphasized and may have been replaced by amaranth and other foods.

Abstract:
Closure of residual ventricular septal defect with an occluder is traditionally performed by a percutaneous transcatheter approach under radiographic guidance. However, this procedure may be of limited use in cases with unusually shaped defects and in patients with low body weight. Here, we report minimally invasive surgical device closure of a 6 mm residual ventricular septal defect under transesophageal echocardiographic guidance, in a patient weighing 10 kg that had previously undergone surgical correction of a double outlet right ventricle. The defect was positioned in the suture line between the Gore-Tex vascular graft and the remnant ventricular septum, and was unusual in that it formed a 135 angle with the Gore-Tex graft. The defect was closed successfully with a 10 mm asymmetric occluder. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of transesophageal echocardiography-guided minimally invasive surgical device closure of an unusually shaped residual ventricular septal defect after surgical correction of a double-outlet right ventricle.

Abstract:
Species of the genus Penicillium are ubiquitous saprotrophs, spreading easily by conidia through the atmosphere. They appear most frequently in soil and on various organic matter. Penicillium olsonii had been found on seeds of various plants in the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia. In our case, this fungus was found on the strips of rockwool in the glasshouses of Horticultural Faculty in Lednice (Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno) in 2000 and 2001. The strain is preserved in the Czech Collection of Microorganisms, Brno, Czech Republic, as CCM 8259.

Abstract:
The atypical course of IDA-ferric (Imino-Di-Acetyl-agarose saturated with ferric ions) of two polyphosphorylated compounds – phytic acid and Ser(P)-Ser(P)-Ser(P)-Glu-Glu cluster obtained by the way of pancreatic hydrolysis of bovine casein was detected. The spectral data (for phytic acid) and iron content (for polyphosphate cluster) indicate the strong bond of ferric ions to these polyphosphorylated compounds. The data shows these compounds to bind ferric ion stronger even in comparison with IDA (Imino-Di-Acetate) itself. Therefore attention is to be paid to all IMAC (Immobilized-Metal-Ion-Affinity-Chromatography) of natural compounds containing strong chelating groups or several chelating groups in vicinity.

Abstract:
In molecular crystalline hydrates with a high content of crystallization water infinite H2O...OH2 nets or finite fragments of such nets are formed. As a rule, these nets contain 5- and 6-membered cycles (H2O)n. Brand new topological types of layered organic crystal hydrates among the structures included in the Cambridge Structural Database in 2009–2019 were found and investigated. The discovered nets were deposited to the Topological Types Database. Topological characteristics of new nets are described, in particular, the maximum possible symmetry, information indices, vertex, edge and face transitivity of the nets

Abstract:
Recently, the concept of evaluating an unusually large learning effort of an adaptive system to detect novelties in the observed data was introduced. The present paper introduces a new measure of the learning effort of an adaptive system. The proposed method also uses adaptable parameters. Instead of a multi-scale enhanced approach, the generalized Pareto distribution is employed to estimate the probability of unusual updates, as well as for detecting novelties. This measure was successfully tested in various scenarios with (i) synthetic data, (ii) real time series datasets, and multiple adaptive filters and learning algorithms. The results of these experiments are presented.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Sialolithiasis is a condition where a calcified mass forms within a salivary gland, most commonly in the duct of the submandibular gland. Commonly sialoliths measure from 5 to 10 mm in size and stones over 10 mm can be reported as sialoliths of unusual size. They rarely measure more than 15 mm. Reported here is a case of large submandibular sialolith which was diagnosed clinically and radiographically and treated with no postoperative complication. Abstract:
Abstract The nematode Romanomermis culicivorax, an obligate mosquito parasite, possesses a 26 kilobase (kb) mitochondrial genome. The unusually large size is due to transcriptionally active DNA sequences present as 3.0 kb direct tandem repeats and as inverted portions of the repeating unit located elsewhere in the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The genome rearrangements involved in establishing this unusual sequence organization may have dramatically altered conventional mitochondrial gene order. Genes for subunits of the cytochrome c oxidase complex (COI and COII) are normally closely linked in animal mtDNAs, but are separated by approximately 8 kb in this mitochondrial genome.

Abstract:
Although newer targeted agents improve survival in cancer patients, they have also been linked with unusual side effects. The most common side effects of Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors include fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, bruising, and cytopenias. We describe herein a case of an unusually severe articular syndrome with the use of ibrutinib in a patient with 17 p minus chronic lymphocytic leukemia. The severity of this side effect led to permanent discontinuation of this agent. As the causality ibrutinib-arthralgia seems legitimate, we expect further similar cases to surface in patients treated with Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

Abstract:
The issue of appropriate quality control metrics is discussed in the context of the production of baseballs. Specifically, Major League Baseball players stroked record numbers of home runs in 1987, generating what is commonly known as the lively ball explanation for the unusual power output. The Commissioners office released a study proving that the 1987 baseball was not unusually lively. However, after examination of the quality control metrics used by MLB; we demonstrate that (1) it is quite possible that baseballs were indeed lively and (2) that acceptance sampling alone does not properly address the quality control problem.
