Abstract:
This study investigated the relationships among family environment, demographic measures, the decisions made by unintentionally pregnant adolescents regarding post-delivery plans (stay single, get married, adoption), and the certainty with which these decisions were made. The Information Sheet, Family Environment Scale (Moos & Moos, 1981), and Multiple Affect Adjective Check List (Zuckerman & Lubin, 1965a) were administered to 17 5 pregnant adolescents, ages 14 through 22, who intended to carry their pregnancies to term. Pearson product-moment correlations and multiple regression analyses were utilized to assess the relationships between family environment and certainty of decision and between family environment and negative affect. Greater uncertainty was associated with nonwhite racial status and living with both natural parents or mother only. Higher levels of negative affect were related to lower levels of perceived family cohesion, independence, expressiveness, and intellectualcultural orientation. The demographic variables of age, trimester of pregnancy, and family constellation were also found to be useful in predicting levels of negative affect. Subjects who were older, further along in their pregnancies, and living with both natural parents or mother only tended to report greater negative affect. Findings of greater uncertainty and negative affect associated with living with the natural mother are consistent with previous reports of disturbed mother-daughter relationships among this population. Discriminant analysis revealed that subjects choosing adoption were more likely to be older and to be white than those choosing to keep the child. They also tended to perceive higher levels of expressiveness and independence in their families. Comparisons between the present sample and "normal" families revealed differences which were statistically significant, but quite small in terms of raw score units. Indeed, these groups may be more similar than has often been assumed. The implications of these findings for the delivery of services and for future research efforts in this area were discussed. More intensive assessment of family functioning is needed. Based upon present results, further investigation of the family constellation variable is warranted.

Unwanted pregnancy among young unmarried South African women still remains a challenge. It has been identified that young unmarried women who are living in rural areas are more vulnerable to unwanted pregnancy. Bronfenbrenner.s theory of systems has been used in the study. The participants were sourced from eMbobeni location, a rural area in Bizana in the Eastern Cape Province. The data was collected through focus group interviews and analysed through content analysis. Group interviews were tape recorded and transcribed. Group support was provided for the participants in the focus group. Through the study it has emerged that lack of knowledge about sexuality and the protection of oneself still remains a challenge. Factors contributing towards unwanted pregnancy among young unmarried women were identified as being lack of parental support; lack of knowledge and the stigma towards contraception; pressures from the partner; ignorance, carelessness and restrictions; and shift of responsibility.

Abstract:
This study examined the influence of activated and chronic interpersonal expectations on primary and secondary appraisal of a stressful life event. Fifty-one female undergraduates were asked to imagine themselves facing an unplanned pregnancy, after which affective state and coping strategies were assessed. A subliminal priming technique was used during the experimental session to activate either positive, negative or neutral interpersonal expectations. Chronic interpersonal expectations were assessed in a telephone interview, using the Collins and Read (1990) attachment scale. Activated negative interpersonal expectations reduced positive affect; chronic interpersonal anxiety heightened overall negative affect, while chronic comfort with closeness and feeling one can depend on others were associated with less feelings of depression. Both activated and chronically accessible positive interpersonal expectations increased intentions to seek emotional support. Chronic anxiety in relationships was related to hostile coping, while a lack of comfort with closeness and depending on others were conducive to self-blaming. Implications of these findings for close relationships and stressful life events and for future priming research are discussed.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of the current study was to undertake a phenomenological investigation on teenage motherhood and to learn how this experience forms part of the teenage mother's life. Using the snowball sampling method, five women aged between 26 and 35 years were selected to participate in the study. All the five women became mothers during their teenage years. Indepth interviews were conducted in Northern Sotho and Tshivenda depending on the language preference and fluency of the participant. The interviews were audio-taped, and later transcribed and translated. A phenomenological method of analysis was used to transform the original data into natural meaning units (NMUs) which were further interrogated so as to distil central sociological themes that were associated with the experience of teenage motherhood. Apart from the finding that the participants got pregnant when they were aged between 16 and 18, five sociological themes associated with teenage motherhood were identified. These are: • Lack of knowledge about sexual relationships contributes to teenage pregnancy and motherhood. • Early childbearing has a negative impact on the teenage mother's social relationships. • Teenage mothers tend to experience emotional problems after delivery of their babies. • Teenage motherhood has a long term disruptive effect on the teenage mother's educational and occupational opportunities. • Teenage motherhood leads to significant lifestyle changes for those who have been through the experience. In view of the above themes, sexual education both at school and at home, is suggested here as a more viable option to help minimise the risk of teenage motherhood in society. Whilst other options like abortion and the newly introduced child support grant are also available to the teenage mother, these are not considered favourable.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die doel van die huidige studie was om 'n fenomenologiese ondersoek oor tienermoederskap te doen en uit te vind hoe hierdie belewenis deel uitmaak van die tienermoeder se bestaan. Deur die sneeubaltoetsingsmetode is vyf vroue tussen die ouderdomme van 26 en 35 jaar gekies om deel te neem aan die studie. AI vyf vroue het tydens hulle tienerjare moeders geword. Diepteonderhoude is in Noord-Sotho en Venda gevoer, afhangende van die taalvoorkeur en -vlotheid van die deelnemer. Klankopnames is van die onderhoude gemaak wat later getranskribeer en vertaal is. 'n Fenomenologiese analisemetode is gebruik om die oorspronklike data na natuurlike betekeniseenhede (NMUs - natural meaning units) te herlei wat verder ondersoek is om sentrale sosiologiese temas geassosieer met die belewing van tienermoederskap te identifiseer. Behalwe vir die bevinding dat die deelnemers swanger geraak het toe hulle tussen die ouderdom van 16 en 18 jaar was, is vyf sosiologiese temas geassosieer met tienermoederskap geïdentifiseer. Hierdie temas is: • 'n Gebrek aan kennis oor seksuele verhoudings dra by tot die voorkoms van tienerswangerskappe en -moederskap. • Vroeë kinderbaring het 'n negatiewe impak op die tienermoeder se sosiale verhoudings. • Tienermoeders is geneig daartoe om emosionele probleme te ondervind na die geboortes van hulle babas. • Tienermoederskap het 'n langtermyn ontwrigtende effek op die tienermoeder se opvoedings- en werksgeleenthede. • Tienermoederskap lei tot betekenisvolle veranderinge in lewenstyl vir diegene wat die ondervinding deurgemaak het. Met inagneming van bogenoemde temas word hier voorgestel dat seksuele opvoeding beide op skool en by die huis 'n meer lewensvatbare opsie is om die risiko van tienermoederskap in die samelewing te verminder. Alhoewel ander opsies soos aborsies en die nuutingestelde toekennings van kinderonderhoud ook vir die tienermoeder beskikbaar is, word hierdie opsies nie as bevorderlik beskou nie.

A gestação, o parto e o puerpério são saberes especiais no universo da mulher, do parceiro, da família e de sua comunidade. A gestação pode gerar diversos sentimentos, tais como: o de surpresa, o de castigo, o de prêmio, o de motivação para continuar a viver, o de realização de um projeto antigo, o de competição em família, o de problema, o de estorvo, o de descuido ou de irresponsabilidade. Confirmada a gravidez, a mulher, o parceiro e os familiares podem vivenciar diferentes reações diante dessa novidade. A reação inicial depende do desejo e planejamento da gravidez (gestação), podendo ser desejada, planejada, ou acidental, não planejada e, até mesmo indesejada. Gravidez não planejada é toda a gestação que não foi programada pelo casal ou, pelo menos, pela mulher. A sua ocorrência tem impacto importante na oferta de cuidados de pré-natal, na orientação sobre aleitamento materno, no estado nutricional infantil e nas taxas de morbimortalidade materno-infantil. Embora pouco estudada, a gravidez não planejada representa risco aumentado de ansiedade e de depressão, sobretudo no período puerperal. Tendo em vista estes aspectos, o objetivo deste estudo foi compreender como as gestantes vivenciaram/experienciaram uma gravidez não planejada e suas consequências à vida familiar/conjugal. O estudo baseou-se na metodologia de análise de dados qualitativos, na análise destes dados, utilizou-se a abordagem metodológica do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC), por meio do software Atlas.ti. A população em estudo foi constituída de gestantes em idade fértil, entre 18 e 49 anos de idade, pois essa faixa etária assegura maioridade às mulheres. Foi utilizada para organizar os dados verbais, entrevista semiestruturada, realizada com 11 gestantes. Partindo dos depoimentos das gestantes copiados no software, a análise dos discursos teve início com a identificação das expressões-chave, nas quais estão contidas as ideias centrais de cada discurso que foram escritas de forma breve e objetiva. Foi evidenciado que as gestantes apresentaram reações iniciais negativas com relação à descoberta da gravidez não planejada, vivenciaram conflitos, devido ao medo de enfrentar a família, o companheiro e os pais. Também ficou evidente que a gravidez não planejada tem como principal consequência a problemática nos níveis biopsicossociais. Evidenciaram altos níveis de ansiedade, estresse e depressão no decurso da gestação. Quanto aos métodos contraceptivos, a maioria estava em uso quando da descoberta da gravidez. Considera-se que este estudo ganha relevância pelo impacto que exerce sobre o bem-estar pessoal, familiar e socioeconômico das mulheres e seus companheiros, em virtude das possíveis gestações não planejadas
Pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period are special knowledge in the world of woman\'s partner, family and your community. Pregnancy can cause many feelings, such as: the surprise, the punishment, the premium, the motivation to continue living, the realization of an old design, the competition in the family, the problem of the hindrance, to carelessness or irresponsibility. Confirmed pregnancy, the woman, her partner and family members may experience different reactions to this news. The initial reaction depends on the planning and desire of pregnancy (gestation), and may be desired, planned or accidental, unplanned and even unwanted. Unplanned pregnancy is any pregnancy that was not planned by the couple, or at least the woman. Its occurrence has important impact on the provision of prenatal care, the guidance on breastfeeding, the nutritional status and rates of maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Although little studied, unplanned pregnancy is increased risk of anxiety and depression, especially in the postpartum period. Considering these aspects, the aim of this study was to understand how pregnant women experienced / experienced an unplanned pregnancy and its consequences for family life / marriage. The study was based on the methodology of qualitative data analysis, the analysis of these data, we used the methodological approach of the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD), using the software Atlas.ti. The study population consisted of pregnant women of childbearing age, between 18 and 49 years of age, because this age ensures age women. Was used to organize the verbal data, semi-structured interviews conducted with 11 pregnant women. Based on the testimonies of the women copied the software, discourse analysis began with the identification of key expressions, in which are contained the main ideas of a speech that was written briefly and objectively. It was shown that pregnant women had initial negative reactions regarding the discovery of unplanned pregnancy, experienced conflict due to fear of facing the family, spouse, and parents. It was also evident that unplanned pregnancy is mainly due to problematic levels biopsychosocial. Showed high levels of anxiety, stress and depression during pregnancy. As for contraception, the majority was in use when the discovery of the pregnancy. It is considered that this study becomes relevant for the impact it has on the well -being, family and socioeconomic status of women and their partners, because of possible unintended pregnancies

Background: There are a high number of teenagers seeking Termination of Pregnancy (TOP) at Maggys Hope Clinic in Polokwane Municipality in Capricorn District in Limpopo Province after the Termination of Pregnancy Act was passed in 1997. The numbers have doubled since the inception of the Children's Act no 38 of 2005 and the Sexual Offences Bill in 2008. The report by Stats SA and Department of education also indicated that the numbers have also doubled. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the factors contributing to termination of pregnancies amongst teenagers at Maggys Hope Clinic in Polokwane Municipality, Limpopo Province. Methods: An exploratory, descriptive qualitative research design was used to identify and describe the factors contributing to termination of pregnancies among teenagers in Maggys Hope Clinic in Capricorn district Limpopo Province South Africa, in April 2014. Results: The results of the study revealed that CTOP legislation is one of the reasons why teenagers terminate. All the twenty participants indicated age and marital status as the motivation as the contributing factor. Looking at the age and educational level the most pushing factor is that thirteen of the participants are still at school. Eleven of the participants have no knowledge of contraceptives. This is a serious concern. Participants indicated that they had very little knowledge on reproductive health issues. The rest of the pushing factors are parental pressure, contraceptive failure, fear of parental disappointment and unpreparedness to raise a child as well. Conclusion: It can thus be concluded that teenage termination of pregnancies is a major health concern in South Africa, Africa and globally. Teenagers’ health is in danger due to engaging in unprotected sex banking on TOP as a solution. The study found that age and fear from dropping out of school, lack parental involvement in sexual matters, family economic status and marital status, including lack of knowledge and information on reproductive health issues, were the main factors contributing to termination of pregnancies among teenagers in Maggys Hope Clinic in Capricorn District, Limpopo Province.

Resumé

Dans le présent travail de recherche, nous présentons un cadre d’analyse, de planification et de mise en œuvre d’une recherche-action portant sur l’apport de l’éducation sexuelle participative comme démarche de la communication stratégique, et ses effets sur le public d’adolescents en milieu scolaire. Le but ultime étant de proposer une meilleure alternative à l’amélioration de la double prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses non désirées chez les adolescents scolarisés de 15-19 ans à Kinshasa, RDC.

Les principaux objectifs fixés à la présente recherche étaient :i) d’évaluer l’ampleur de la situation épidémiologique et sociale liée à la santé de reproduction y compris la prévention du VIH/SIDA chez les jeunes adolescents (15-19 ans) ;ii) d’identifier les besoins ainsi que les préoccupations spécifiques des adolescents et jeunes notamment en terme de vie sexuelle et affective ;iii) de projeter les axes de communication stratégiques susceptibles d’influencer positivement les comportements en vue d’améliorer la prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses précoces des adolescents et jeunes en milieu urbain ;iv) de construire sur base des observations et analyses précédentes, une approche de communication stratégique fondée sur l’éducation sexuelle participative; iv) et mesurer au point de vue cognitif et comportemental, l’écart attribuable à l’éducation sexuelle sur l’amélioration des connaissances, des attitudes et des pratiques favorables à la double prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses précoces chez les adolescents de 15-19 ans en milieu urbain de la RDC.

Réalisée dans une perspective de la promotion de la santé, son cadre théorique chemine avec celui de l’évidence des liens entre les IST/VIH/SIDA et la santé sexuelle et de reproduction. La combinaison du modèle d’analyse PRECEDE avec l’outil de planification PROCESSUS-P, a servi de fil conducteur de ce travail.

Cette étude confronte également la théorie de la communication avec les modèles de changement de comportement. En effet, les messages sur la sexualité émis par un émetteur, permettent à l’individu qui les reçoit, de se persuader à amorcer le changement de comportement qui passe par différents étapes. Mais au delà de la volonté individuelle, les relations de sexualité se vivent dans une interaction sociale dont il faudra tenir compte.

La construction de cette recherche a fait appel aux disciplines des sciences sociales, comportementales, de l’éducation, et de l’épidémiologie.

Nous avons combiné quatre approches différentes pour cerner nos hypothèses de recherche :i) la revue documentaire, ii) l’approche socio-anthropologique (qualitative) par des focus groups, entretiens semi dirigés, observations directes, iii) l’approche socio-épidémiologique (quantitative) par des enquêtes transversales et iv) l’approche opérationnelle par l’introduction d’une approche innovante utilisant le téléphone et la radio comme moyen pour identifier et orienter des messages à diffuser en milieu scolaire sur la prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et les grossesses précoces.

Ce travail propose deux formats de résultats :les articles publiés ou en cours de l’être et les résultats complémentaires synthétisés dans différents tableaux.

Les articles abordent successivement :i) le profil de risque et de vulnérabilité lié au VIH/SIDA et à la santé des adolescents ;ii) la perception des adolescents en matière de santé sexuelle et reproductive ;iii) l’ analyse de l’intégration de l’éducation sexuelle dans les médias ;iv) l’utilisation du téléphone portable et de la radio pour identifier les préoccupations sexuelles des adolescents, v) les déterminants associés à la pratique de la double prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses précoces et vi) les effets cognitifs et comportementaux de l’éducation sexuelle participative sur la double prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses précoces en milieu scolaire de Kinshasa.

Les données synthétisées dans différents tableaux rendent compte de l’analyse de la réponse nationale sur la santé de la reproduction des adolescents et des différents aspects du cadre théorique d’analyse et de planification d’une communication stratégique pour la prévention des IST/VIH/SIDA et des grossesses précoces.

L’ensemble des résultats de cette recherche peut se résumer en dix points importants ci-après :

ABSTRACT Teenage pregnancy is a health and social problem in Malawi as a result of physical, psychological and socio-economic consequences on the teenage mother, family and the society as a whole. Although studies have been conducted on the prevalence and risk factors that cause teenage pregnancy in Malawi before, detailed reports are scanty, especially for Zomba district. In spite of studies and interventions that have been and are being implemented, the prevalence of unplanned teenage pregnancy in Malawi is still high, suggesting that more efforts are required to achieve effective preventive measures. The aim of this study was to explore risk factors such as cultural issues, non-use of contraceptives, lack of knowledge on sexual and reproductive health, circumstances of first sex, gender power dynamics, sexual and physical violence, age difference between teenage girls and their partners and socio-economic status for unplanned teenage pregnancy in Zomba district of Malawi. A cross-sectional analytic design was used. Five antenatal clinics were selected using a stratified and simple random sampling technique. Data were obtained from 505 participants under the age of 20 years using a questionnaire administered through face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse data and comparisons between planned and unplanned teenage pregnancy were conducted using the Chi-squared (P ≤ 0.05) and logistic regression model to predict factors for unplanned pregnancy. Findings reveal that unplanned pregnancy accounted for 76.4% of teenagers attributable to early sex and marriage, low contraceptive use, educational levels and socio-economic status, lack of knowledge of reproductive and sexual health, physical and sexual violence and substance abuse, transactional sex due to poverty, early school dropout, misleading counselling causing a lack of knowledge on sexual and reproductive health and gender inequalities. Recommendations made are aimed at eliminating myths and misconceptions surrounding the use of contraceptives and condoms, empowering teenagers economically and in decision making, promoting career guidance, awareness on human rights, including sexual and reproductive rights and implications of early marriage and training of traditional counsellors. A multisectoral approach, including government, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and communities, is required to implement these recommendations.

Teenage pregnancies should be understood in terms of a changing of sexual behaviour, slowly evolving over many centuries. In contrast to our modern world, New England puritans in the seventeenth century demanded that the entire community conform to the exemplary moral codes drawn up by the first settlers. Civil magistrates or ministers were responsible for quickly and publicly chastised sexual offenders. One of the sources estimate that in the late 1670's well over one half of the guilty couples involved in premarital pregnancies found themselves convicted and punished. In England the loosening of the popular convention about sexual behaviour was followed by the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 as secularism replaced Puritanism. Observers noted steady but noticeable erosion of church and civil opposition to premarital sexual activity. In Essex County, the number of civil prosecutions dropped and the penalty ranged from corporal punishment to paying a fine. In Middlesex county, Massachusetts, signs of moral irresponsibility in fornication cases increased, starting in the 1660's (Vinovskis, 1988). When prominent church leaders such as Jonathan Edwards in the eighteenth century tried to punish the lax moral standards of their parishioners, they found they could no longer count on the support of their congregations and the rest of the community. Simultaneously with the unwillingness of the civil or church authorities to punish cases of pregnancies, parents gradually lost their ability to persuade their children to marry according to their parent's wishes. In the absence of concerted communal or familial efforts to curb the problem of teenage pregnancy, a general loosening of sexual behaviour occurred among early Americans. Sexual intimacy returned as a normal part of courtship behaviour and practices such as bundling became more common. The promise to marry rather than the marriage itself often led to sexual intercourse amongst couples. As long as the community was not burdened with the financial burden of illegitimate children, citizens tolerated premarital pregnancies. The result was not a breakdown of social mores in the early Republic but a shift in the definition of appropriate behaviour between individuals in love. Shorter (in Vinovskis, 1988) concludes that central in the history of courtship over the past two centuries had been the enormous increase in sexual activity before marriage. Before 1800 it was unlikely that the typical young woman, would have coitus with her partner and certainly not before an engagement had been sealed, and probably not as a fiancee either. After 1800 however the percentage of young women who slept with their boyfriends or fiancees rose steadily. Today it is a common phenomenon.

Unplanned pregnancy is a major medical, social and public health problem worldwide. This problem affects learners’ performance and leads to a high learner drop-out rate at schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors influencing unplanned pregnancy among high school learners in the Collins Chabane Municipality, Limpopo Province, South Africa. A quantitative study using survey methods was used. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The total sample size was 362 female learners ranged between learners whose ages ranged between 16 and 24. Only female learners in the school were recruited to participate in the study. Validity and Reliability were ensured. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0 program. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize and present the data. Permission to conduct the study was obtained from the Department of Education, Limpopo Province, the Malamulele Circuit and the Principal of the school. Informed consent was obtained from parents on behalf of female learners under 18 years of age. Confidentiality and anonymity was ensured. The study found that about 58.2% of adolescents had used contraceptives, while 64.1% indicated that they needed more information on contraceptive methods and their use. The study also found that about 71.8% of the respondents had abstained from sexual activities in order to avoid unplanned pregnancy. Unplanned pregnancies were found to be associated with ignorance of the consequences of sexual activities, information about sex from their peers and the power imbalance in sexual relationships between male and female adolescents. It is recommended that adolescents be given adequate information about contraceptives, addressing the advantages, disadvantages, side effects and how to manage their side effects. This would help mitigate against the negative attitudes that the adolescents have toward contraceptives owing to misinformation and misconceptions. In addition, school health nurses should use Information Education Communication (IEC) materials on family planning to increase awareness about family planning and to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The IEC materials should be in the most common languages of Limpopo Province, i.e. Sepedi, Xitsonga and Tshivenda for clear understanding of the content.

The aim of this study was to explore the psychological effects of termination of pregnancy by choice amongst adolescents within the ages of 18 to 21 years. Exploratory, contextual, qualitative design was used to determine the psychological effects of termination of pregnancy by choice amongst adolescents. Purposive sampling method as well as snowballing were used to select participants for the study. Data collection was done through in-depth, one-on-one, face-to-face interviews, using a semi-structured interview guide. The study highlighted that adolescents who seek abortion are unmarried and mostly still studying. The results revealed that adolescents experience mental ill health after termination of pregnancy due to feelings of guilt. All participants stated that abortion is murder of a life person and that it is a bad thing to do. The study revealed that counselling that is done before TOP focuses on the procedure of TOP. There is need for a holistic approach to counselling. As a guide, policy makers need to specify the mandatory counselling in the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act (Act No 92 of 1996).

Literature reveals that reproductive coercion is a major contributor to unwanted pregnancy and a factor that influences the choice to terminate pregnancy in many adolescents. Adolescents represent a population vulnerable to a number of physical and psychological problems. Purpose The overall aim of this thesis was to develop a model of self-forgiveness for women who terminated pregnancy in adolescence. Objectives The study objectives are aligned according to the phases of the study as follows: Phase 1: Desk review Explore what is already known about the topic and identify gaps. Phase 2: Lived experiences of participants about TOP Explore the lived experiences of participants who terminated pregnancy in adolescence. Phase 3: Development of a model Develop a model of self-forgiveness for women who terminated pregnancy in adolescence. The social-ecological model (Bronfenbrenner 1992), through which individuals are understood to influence and be influenced by people, organisations, institutions, societal norms, rules and beliefs with whom they interact, was followed. The model offered a holistic framework for exploring interrelationships related to TOP Methodology A qualitative approach based on Heidegger (1962) interpretive phenomenological approach was used. The study was conducted at a Health Care Centre in Tshwane Municipality, Gauteng Province, South Africa. The population consisted of women, 20-35 years old, who terminated pregnancy in adolescence. A purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used to recruit 30 participants who had terminated pregnancy in adolescence. An interview guide was used to solicit information from participants. Audiotaped interviews were held at the time, date and place agreed by participants. Colaizzi’s (1978) approach of data analysis was used. Results Five major themes emerged, with 17 sub-themes as transgressing one of nature’s strongest instincts: the mother’s protection of her young; unplanned pregnancy; intra-and interpersonal relationships; experience of caring by health care professionals and a need for counselling. A model of self-forgiveness for women who did TOP in adolescence, based on the components of self-condemnation and self-blame, cultural and spiritual, as well as reproductive coercion, was developed. Conclusion Participants carried the burden of shame and guilt of having terminated pregnancy in adolescence. The influence of culture and religion were the major contributing factors to women failing to forgive themselves after termination of pregnancy. A model of self-forgiveness is needed to allow those who terminated pregnancy in adolescence to move on with their life.

Unintended and unwanted pregnancies are major reproductive health problems impacting negatively on women’s health globally. When faced with these pregnancies, many women choose termination of pregnancy (TOP) as their recourse. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe physical, psychological and social implications of TOP on the woman’s health. A qualitative and descriptive research design was used. The population comprised women who had TOP three months to one year before the study and were willing to participate in the study. A non-probability purposive sampling was used to select participants for the study. In-depth phenomenological interviews were used for data collection until data saturation was reached with 20 participants. The findings reveal that women had psychological, physical and social implications after TOP which impacted negatively on their health. Recommendations were made to improve the services of women choosing to terminate a pregnancy to lessen negative implications.

This is a descriptive study with a quantitative, non-experimental and contextual design, with the objective of describing the knowledge of female adolescents with regards to the implications of pregnancy. The study took place in the Bengo Province, more specifically in the school of the suburb Bairro da Açúcareira and the sample was constituted by 100 female adolescents, within the age group 13 to 19 years. Simple random sampling was used for the selection of the sample. For the collection of data a structured questionnaire with closed questions was used. Based on the data obtained the researcher draws the following conclusion: there is a need to develop educational programmes pertaining to the consequences of pregnancy, not only for adolescents but also for the teachers and parents, as the respondents indicated that teachers and parents would be the ideal people for this type of discussion; on the other hand, and of extreme importance, there is a need for specific assistance to adolescents at health centers and hospitals of the province with regard to the lack of entertainment for adolescents in the province is also an aspect that deserves attention on the part of the government of the Province of Bengo.

This study identified pregnancy-related challenges encountered by student nurses at SAMHS Nursing College, with an aim of identify factors contributing to student nurses' pregnancies as well as finding ways to deal and minimize the rate of the pregnancies amongst the student nurses. Thirty (30) structured interviews were conducted with student nurses who were pregnant and those who delivered their babies during the period 2002 to 2007. It has been revealed that ignorance is the major contributing factor for student nurses' pregnancies, 63% of the pregnancies were not planned, 52% of the respondents related their pregnancies to risk taking as they engaged in unprotected sex without the use of contraceptives, and thus it was concluded that student nurses are engaging themselves in risk behaviours and also engaging in unsafe sexual practices. The study also found that student nurses face physical, social, emotional as well as academic problems during pregnancy and after the delivery of their babies. Student nurses should be encouraged to use condoms and other methods of contraception, coupled with educating them on life skills, provision of recreational facilities; provision of counseling and support services may be the tool to minimise the unplanned pregnancies.
