Full textThe main goal of this thesis is to propose a conceptual theoretical model of critical success factors of International Development Cooperation programmes that are based in knowledge transfer approaches in the context of tourism development. The research was structured around three main theoretical pillars: international development cooperation (IDC), tourism as a tool for development, and knowledge transfer (KT). By exploring these pillars´ main interrelations, it was possible to gather the necessary background to develop the theoretical model and apply it to a real context. It was adopted a qualitative research approach using as a case study an IDC programme in tourism - the UNWTO.Volunteers programme. The key contribution of this thesis in the theoretical realm is the bridging of fields of study that are insufficiently covered in the scientific literature. The resulting model proposal applied to a real context of an IDC programme implementation permitted to test it partially providing useful insights for future research. It is postulated that IDC programmes in these contexts constitute a process rather than an end in itself. Therefore, they should be seen as a way of changing the state of the art of the tourism system in a sustainable manner so that it potentially generates positive development changes. This study suggested that it is not possible to achieve positive results if, instead of encouraging a KT and learning environment, it is simply disseminated knowledge in a linear, static, north-south approach. The characteristics of these interventions should be reviewed in that it was found that it is very difficult to guarantee the maintenance of the development changes induced by them if it is not safeguarded the necessary conditions and accountability to implement the recommended actions. While it was perceived a great potential for development changes to be induced by some IDC programmes in tourism destinations, it was concluded that these processes are too much dependent on the local political systems and existing power relations, as well as on the level of tourism development of the destination. However, more research is needed to examine the ability to generalise the findings to other IDC programmes and different destinations of developing countries.

Full textThis work focus on the study of co-development as a specific strategy through which the linkage migration&development is declined. Co-development foresees migrants associations to play a role as leading characters in undertaking development projects in the homeland co-operating with partners in both shores of migration. It represents a triple win strategy, and it can bring advantages in the country of origin, in the country of destination and for migrants themselves at the same time. In particular the research investigates the effects brought by co-development on the integration process in migrants resident context. Furthermore the research analyses how the resident context provides incentives for migrants association to act transnationally. With this aim the study compares two different arrival contexts analysing the different development initiatives realised by Ghanaian migrants associations back home. Using a qualitative approach, a multi-sited research has been carried out in three different fieldworks: Italy, the United Kingdom and Ghana. The research puts into light the different effects that co-development produces on the interaction between transnationalism and migrants integration in the context where they live, and how this produces, as a result, some effects on the process of development in the context of origin.

Full textAs part of the transition to a student-centred approach in higher education, in the EHEA, programmes and curricula are now expressed not only in terms of course content, but also of learning objectives, learning outcomes and developed competences. In the framework of this study learning objectives and learning outcomes describing learning units (in a number of master and bachelor degree programmes) have been structurally and semantically studied, in order to outline the features of a pilot classification of learning objectives. The research project described in this work suggests a faceted classification scheme of learning objectives (FLOC, Faceted Classification of Learning Objectives). FLOC is tested out in four different linguistic and cultural contexts in which units of learning objectives from disciplines of the humanities – in Austria, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom – are classified according to a common scheme. The resulting four classifications – FLOC-AT, FLOC-DE, FLOC-IT and FLOC-EN – provide also the context for a contrastive multilingual analysis.

Full textThe object of the work is at the intersection of different disciplines: literature, education, sociology and psychology. The thesis includes a thematic analysis of some novels written in English language by six women writers of Indian origin, in particular, Jamila Gavin, Rachna Gilmore, Anjali Banerjee, Rukhsana Khan, Ravinder Randhawa and Meera Syal. The first chapter traces the theoretical premises and the methodological framework, defining the genre of children's literature and questioning about its specificity in a postcolonial context. The second chapter is dedicated to the second generation identity issue, in particular on the Indo-British and Indo-Canadian identity definition. The third chapter focuses on the intergenerational dialogue between the protagonists and their grandparents, including the standpoint of those excluded from official history. Furthermore, it analyses the perception of diversity and the self-definition of youth through clothing. The final chapter deals with the definition of identity carried through spaces, places and journeys.

Full textAnglo-vatican relations, historically marked by reciprocal diffidences, were characterized by cordiality during the first part of the pontificate of Pope Achille Ratti - Pius XI (1922-1939). From 1927 to 1932 a painful conflict between Church and State in Malta, the Roman Catholic British colony, gradually turned into a bitter diplomatic confrontation between the Secretariat of State of His Holiness and the Foreign Office. The ties between United Kingdom and Holy See weakened further in the years 1935-1936, during the Ethiopian War: wrongly, London interpreted Papal Diplomacy’s peace initiative as conceived to support the imperial claims of Fascist Italy. In 1937, following the publication of the Encyclical “Mit Brennender Sorge”, a factual rapprochement started: the British perceived the Papacy as lined up with democracies and opposed to Totalitarian States, that is to say Germany and Italy. The institution of the Apostolic Delegation to Great Britain (November 1938) constituted symptom and concrete manifestation of a new and deep harmony.

Full textHuman trafficking is a crime today widespread which has attracted media attention in recent years during the consolidation of anti-trafficking policies at international and national level. The academic debate on the role of the media within the context of trafficking in human beings (THB) is scant, and one of the issues concerns the impact of public policies on media contents. This is the context in which the research has been framed, its aim being to investigate whether national anti-trafficking measures shape the coverage and the representation of THB by a country’s press. Six hypotheses are formulated, and they are verified by examination of four conservative and liberal broadsheets published in Italy and the United Kingdom from 2000 to 2010: i.e. Corriere della Sera, La Repubblica, Daily Telegraph, The Guardian. The application of content analysis, with the validation of in-depth interviews, contributes to testing the hypotheses. As regards the data analysis, the relationship between the legal agenda and the press agenda appears to have been close during the ten reference years. Notwithstanding its limitations, this study can be read as the first stage in understanding how newspapers approach the issue of trafficking and what factors may influence their choices.
