Abstract:
For a sample of 26 non-financial listed Portuguese firms-year from 2002 to 2016, this study extends previous research by empirically examining how board structure affects the magnitude of accounting conservatism for companies listed in Portugal. Mainly, we focus on the main characteristics of the board structure that are highlighted by the Portuguese Securities Market Supervisory Authority’s recommendations: board size, board composition, board’s monitoring committees and number of board meeting. This study predicts and finds a non-linear relationship between board size and conservatism. Specifically, we find that as board size increases up to 8 members, the sample firms employ more conservatism, consistent with the idea that smaller boards can be more effective than larger boards in monitoring managerial behaviour. When board size reaches beyond 8 members, a negative relationship between board size and conservatism accounting occurs. We also find that both boards comprised of more non-executive members and high board meetings frequency lead firms to report more conservatively.

The two-part legacy board device under test (DUT) pad has been very useful for testing of microelectronic packages. However, <span lang="EN-US">this board has been subjected to many repair endorsements due to open connection of DUT pad and cut traces of the board components as recorded. Abstract:
The manufacture of electronic products has evolved significantly over time: it began with Wire Assembly, passed through THT (Through Hole Technology) with the emergence of Printed Circuit Boards, and reached SMT (Surface Mount Technology), following the trend towards the miniaturization of electronic components. The complete SMT production process generally consists of three distinct stages: the application of solder paste, the positioning of components and solder reflow to electrically connect the components to the board. It is a process of assembling electronic components directly onto the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB), an automatic process that enables the production of electronic boards at high speed and precision. The manufacture of electronic boards using surface mount technology is the most up-to-date, even more so with the advent of Industry 4.0, which is increasingly raising the level of investment required to purchase the equipment/machines that make up a fully automated assembly line. However, it is common to find inefficient SMT lines, increasing manufacturing costs. In this context, this paper aims to present SMT equipment in the electronic board assembly sector, an efficient implementation system, considering everything from Design for Manufacturing (DFM) to Start Up, including Technical Information on the Board and the Components to be inserted into it, through the Programming of Assembly Equipment.

Abstract:
Electronic equipment of aircraft during operation is exposed to vibrations with a frequency of 20-2000 Hz and a vibration acceleration of up to 20g. Almost half of all failures of on-board equipment are caused by the negative impact of vibration. For effective vibration protection of the equipment during its design, a vibration analysis is carried out, recognizing resonance modes. The difficulty of modeling vibration processes in printed circuit boards lies in the deviation of calculated values of critical frequencies and values obtained experimentally with the help of shakers. The main reasons for this in the known analytical methods are the impossibility of fully accurate consideration of the concentrated masses and elastic-damping characteristics of individual electronic components of the board, its fasteners and device cases, which, in turn, leads to the appearance of coupled oscillations. The paper presents the results of vibration analysis by well-known analytical methods, numerical and experimental methods. It is shown that the accuracy of determining the natural frequencies and forms of board oscillations is significantly influenced by the geometric, inertial, and elastic-damping characteristics of the board components. The effectiveness of numerical modeling methods is demonstrated. When arranging massive components at the stage of designing the board, it is necessary to take into account that the natural frequency of the board depends on the position of its center of gravity and increases sharply when approaching the edge of the board. Boards with a small number of components have a lower critical frequency than their corresponding empty boards due to the increase in mass. Instead, boards densely filled with components have a higher natural frequency than empty boards due to increased stiffness. In order to increase the accuracy of the vibration analysis, it is necessary to conduct a preliminary analysis of the elastic and damping parameters of attaching the board to the case and the case itself.

Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of board diversity, political connections, and firm value on the listed financial services firms in Nigeria. Firm value, proxied by Tobin's q and computed as the ratio of the firm's market value of equity to its book value of total assets, is the study's explained variable, while board gender diversity, board nationality, board ethnic diversity, and political connections are the study's explanatory variables. The study’s population consists of 51 listed financial service firms on the Nigerian Stock Exchange as of December 31, 2020. Thirty-five (35) of these firms made up the sample size for a period of nine years (2012–2020). Data was gathered from the annual reports of the sampled companies and analyzed using the feasible generalized least squares regression (FGLS) approach. According to the study, board gender diversity, board nationality, and board ethnic diversity have a positive and significant effect on the firm value of listed financial service firms in Nigeria, whereas political connections have a positive but insignificant effect. According to the findings, the boards of directors of listed financial service organizations in Nigeria should ensure that females are considered for directorship seats on the boards, as suggested by the resource dependency theory. Also, the board should be made up of foreign directors in order to lure foreign investors to the firm and enhance its value. In addition, the boards of directors of listed financial services firms in Nigeria should consist of a mix of both northerners and southerners to leverage national spreads and improve firm value.

Abstract:
Solar Bora AB is a Linköping based company that provides end to end solution for clean and reliable energy. System developed by them generates high power 230V AC to run electrical appliances. The system consist of string of batteries which are charged by rooftop solar cells and the energy stored in the batteries is converted to AC to provide a grid voltage like experience even though the system is not connected to a grid. Energy stored in the batteries need to be converted from DC to AC efficiently. Inverter used for conversion should be efficient enough to reduce losses. This master thesis deals with optimization and Up-gradation of Half-Bridge inverter board so that switching loss can be minimized to increase efficiency. Initial part of the thesis involves investigation of different parameters which contribute to losses in inverter. Based on that some improvements were suggested in existing design of half-bridge board. Another task involved in the thesis was complete re-design of half-bridge. More efficient and robust components were selected for complete re-design. Based on new components and its specifications a new circuit and PCB was designed in Altium Designer. Lab testing was performed to verify the functionality of new Half-bridge.

Abstract:
Nowadays more and more web applications are becoming part of everybody’s daily life. Lots of Internet users are bothered by having to create new accounts on websites. But at the same time, it is believed that sign-up as well as sign-in is a good registration solution which is difficult to replace.  In this thesis we considered a certain scenario in which a number of people need a short period of co-operation for certain tasks by using a web application. If everyone creates an account, it will be significantly annoying since it will increase everyone’s work and extend the working period. Due to such consideration we have supplied a possible solution that one user with an account works as a super-client, and then generates short-lived login codes or links for others who work as sub-clients. This solution is called SDMS which is short for Super-client Driving Multiple Sub-clients.  The thesis work contains the description and analysis of SDMS as well as designing and developing an example application. The example application is an online board game assistance platform, whose user scenario exactly fulfils the case of multiple users co-operating for a certain task that has been mentioned in the previous paragraph. Finally, we draw the conclusion that SDMS could improve the user experience in certain scenarios.<br>Numera blir allt fler webbapplikationer en del av allas dagliga liv.

Weedmark, Michael Ellsworth. "Minimizing machine set-up time when manufacturing printed circuit boards." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/9487.

Full text
Abstract:
Technical advances in the past decade have enabled the development of very fast but expensive component placement machines for the production of Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs). However, when these fast machines have to assemble small volumes of many different types of circuit boards, the machine set-up time becomes much more important than the assembly rate of each board. In order to minimize this set up time, we must try to solve the set-up/sequencing decision problem according to either the MCS (Minimizing Component Switches) or MSI (Minimizing Switching Instants) performance criterion, or both. We examine the set-up/sequencing decision problem for a single machine (work cell) which has high mix low volume production schedules. We compare and improve methods which attempt to solve this problem, and we develop our own heuristics for solving this problem when both performance criteria are of great importance. We use lower bounds to determine how good our results are, and we discuss how to adapt methods which we have looked at to different manufacturing environments.

O'Brien, James Paul. "An analysis of participatory democracy in Scottish School Boards up to 1994." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1998. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2444/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work is an analysis of the origins and development of modern school boards in Scotland, 1984-1994. Its major conclusion is that there has been disjunction between theories of participation and management and the system on one hand, and between the system and the operation of boards on the other. Part one provides a rationale for pursuing this study and poses a range of questions which the analysis attempts to answer. The methodology adopted with regard to documentary analysis of the two public consultation exercises of the 1980s, the educational press and other documents is described. The approach to interviewing of key participants and observers of the events is also explained. The work is placed in a theoretical contexts in Part two where attention is drawn to the underpinning concepts for the establishment and emerging prominence of participative councils. Consideration is given to theories of democracy, particularly representative and participative forms. Indicators of democracy are considered as is the nature of representation and modes of participation which claim to challenge remoteness and tendencies towards centralisation and elitism. The discussion moves from general theoretical analysis to the potential for such insights to apply to schools and school boards. The main types of participatory action are discussed and the efficacy of using the structure of school boards as a means of applying democratic theories is introduced. Democracies invariably generate bureaucracies so the question of schools being bureaucracies is raised and the relationship to the concept of professionalism is explored. Accountability of schools is identified as especially important to school board functioning. The nature of school management is then assessed and the possible purposes of participative councils reviewed. The trend towards participative management in schools is analysed with a view to its extension to include lay persons on governing bodies or school boards; it is speculated that this might encourage the development of a management partnership involving lay and professional interests which appeared to be one of the government's intentions in 1987 when the proposals for school boards emerged.

Couturier, Gaël. "Droit des sociétés et droit des entreprises en difficulté." Thesis, Lyon 3, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO30088.

Full text
Abstract:
It is commonly understood that, when considering ailing companies, the conflicts that arise between concurrently applicable corporate law and insolvency law can be solved with “special law” that prevails over “ordinary law”. This understanding has lost some relevance through the transformation of “bankruptcy law” into “distressed business law”. The trend towards the use of explicit contracts in these fields is bringing about a change in their finality, content and scope. This evolution of corporate law and insolvency law is creating new apprehension on the part of both the distressed company and the creditors, with the result that both parties are looking for means to combine these subjects when organising the recovery of an ailing firm. Their coexistence in substantive law turns out to be even more subtle and complex. In the case of an amicable settlement of a dispute, a synergy exists between corporate law and insolvency law whereas when a settlement is imposed under court supervision, the prevalence of insolvency law over corporate law is notable. Despite distinct origins, differing finality and radically opposing functions, a common logic motivates the relation between corporate law and insolvency law revealing a legal corpus and case law as a testament to the existence of an “ailing company law”

AbstractIn the current age of innovative business financing opportunities available from fintech apps, social media crowdfunding sites such as Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and RocketHub, et.al., and friends and family private equity investors, start-up firms can strategically source their venture capital funds from many globally disperse organizations and individuals. As the firm in this case learned, the benefit of alternative investing sources comes with a critical hidden risk for corporate governance. After a financial restructuring, a typical Silicon Valley software start-up found itself with close to 300 external individual shareholders, some of whom had not been documented as accredited investors. The regulatory agency could decide that the prior actions of the founders and the decisions of the board had been prejudicial to the interests of the minority investors. The management of this small private company faced an atypical investor relations dilemma, before its initial public offering (IPO).

AbstractWhile accounting at first sight always seems to be about numbers only, in reality, it does heavily involve people and culture. Thus, also general management should be open to the respective issues, and not push it into a technical, sometimes even “nerdy” corner. Very often, discussions about numbers are in reality discussions about underlying business or cultural issues. In order to bring them up, the board needs at least one member (financial expert) who is on a level playing field with the CFO and the auditor and will not be distracted by (presumably) complicated technical questions.

Abstract:
Promoting board diversity has had many supporters for years. Assuming that more minds would end up at better decisions, such would be an absolute win, however, there is a caveat, as with more diversity there is more potential for conflicts to arise as well. With the interlocking representations of current world multinational boards, their composition includes people from significantly different globe regions, which bring completely different worldviews into the boardroom. Therefore, the potential for misunderstandings, miscommunication, and ultimately board dynamic failures has never been higher. As this paradigm is unavailable, its context demands new solutions and perhaps new board leadership and training approaches. This article points towards possible research pathways for addressing such an important issue for making multinational boards more effective and efficient.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents a finite element (FE) model for simulation of trawl board and pipeline pullover interaction. The considered trawl gear system is referred to as a single otter trawl. This system consists of a single trawl net, two trawl boards and a fishing vessel which are connected by steel ropes. The trawl net was modelled by a new simplified trawl net model ensuring high computational efficiency. This trawl net model can simulate the correct tension level in the steel ropes connecting the trawl net and the trawl boards during the pipeline interaction phase, which is crucial to obtain a realistic trawl board interaction behaviour. The trawl boards were modelled as 6-DOF rigid bodies which were assigned a tailormade hydrodynamic load model based on a 3-parameter interpolation scheme both for the added mass and the forward-speed induced loads. Compared to previous work, the applied interpolation scheme was extended and improved in terms of parameter choice and number of parameters. The forward-speed induced loads consist of drag and lift loads. These loads were estimated by flume tank testing considering numerous trawl board configurations in terms of angle of attack, board-seabed inclination angle and gap between the trawl board and the seabed. Detailed measurements of the trawl board applied in the flume tank test were done to obtain an accurate description of the contact geometry, the centre of gravity and the rotational mass properties. The proposed FE model was validated against model test results of trawl board pull-over considering variation of pipeline height, pipeline diameter and trawling velocity. The FE model was found to give very good agreement with the model test in terms of build-up of pipeline interaction forces, peak force level and duration. The FE model is therefore regarded as applicable for use in design analysis of pipeline and trawl board pull-over interaction.

Sadowski, Dieter. Board-Level Codetermination in Germany - The Importance and Economic Impact of Fiduciary Duties. Association Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.53099/ntkd4304.

Full text
Abstract:
The empirical accounts of the costs and benefits of quasi-parity codetermined supervisory boards, a very special German institution, have long been inconclusive. A valid economic analysis of a particular legal regulation must take the legal specificities seriously, otherwise it will be easily lost in economic fictions of functional equivalence. At its core the corporate actor “supervisory board” has no a priori objective function to be maximised – the corner stone of the theory of the firm – but its objective function will only be brought about a posteriori – should negotiations result in an agreement (E. Fraenkel). With this understanding, the paper presents six recent quasi-experimental studies on the economic (dis) advantageousness of the German codetermination laws that try to follow the rules of causal inference despite the lack of random variation. By and large they refute the hold-up model of codetermination by showing positive or nonnegative effects even on shareholder wealth – and a far-reaching improvement of the well-being of the core workforce. In conclusion, indications are offered that the shareholder primacy movement has only weakened, but not dissolved the “Deutschland AG”.

Abstract:
This working paper examines cases of non-EU countries with complex governance structures that, like the European Union, have difficulties coordinating their joined-up policies in the areas of security, intelligence and defence. Its first part discusses the challenges of joined-up action for the European Union's external action, with a focus on coherence. The second part analyses cases of policy responses in Brazil, the United States and Turkey. It describes and discusses how these countries’ governments deal with coordination and implementation problems in the areas of migration management (Brazil and Turkey) and artificial intelligence (United States). Each case study sheds light on the country’s specific policy challenges, the strategies used to address these issues, and the possible lessons learned. The third part summarises the main takeaways from each case study and reflects on their adaptability to the EU's external action. Lessons can be drawn from Brazil’s Operation Acolhida as a civil-military and inter-ministerial initiative to tackle a high migratory influx, from the creation of the United States’ Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and the country’s mainstreaming of artificial intelligence in security and defence areas, and from Turkey’s continuous learning process in migration policies and the establishment of the country’s Migration Board. In conclusion, the paper argues that solutions to inter-agency coordination and coherence problems can be found without large institutional or treaty changes and that policy recommendations should consider innovative solutions to improve European Union joined-up external action.

Abstract:
The flue-gas desulfurization gypsum (FGD gypsum) from Mae Moh power station is characterized for its physical and chemical properties, precleaned by acid leaching and sedimentation to light coloured powder which is later used, in later used, in comparison with natural gypsum, as raw material for the syntheses of [beta]-hemihydrate, anhydrites and multiphase plasters. Based on the commercial specification, these gypsum plasters are fabricated into product, i.e. gypsum board and projection plaster slurry. With the employment of gypsum technology, the product performance can be engineered to match up to that of the natural gypsum.

Quick, Stephen A. Self Evaluation of OVE's Work: 2001-2010. Inter-American Development Bank, 2011. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0010551.

Full text
Abstract:
This self evaluation has been prepared by the Office of Evaluation and Oversight (OVE) in response to a request from Executive Directors to support the work of the Independent Review Panel (IRP), which has been tasked with undertaking an external, independent review of the evaluation function at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Over the 10 years of its existence, OVE has produced a substantial volume of evaluation work, including 47 country program evaluations, 98 other documents in the "RE" series that are sent to the Board for consideration, 27 evaluation reports for the MIF, IIC and Japan Special Fund, and 65 technical reports and working papers. OVE has established formal procedures for the quality control of its evaluations, relying on both internal and external peer reviews of documents sent to the Board. The quality of data available varies across the range of evaluation studies, and some are able to mobilize better empirical information than others. Comments on the quality of OVE documents recorded in the minutes of Board discussions are overwhelmingly favorable. Across a broad range of issues, OVE has issued reports that challenge the empirical basis of prevailing claims regarding the relevance, efficiency, effectiveness, impact, and sustainability of Bank interventions in the region. These challenges have sometimes provoked controversy, but on the whole, it is OVE's view that these controversies have been helpful to the institution in deepening thought and opening up new possibilities. In thinking about the future of the evaluation function at the IDB, this self evaluation highlights the role that an independent, empirically focused, challenging OVE can play in opening up possibilities for institutional change and improvement. While there are clear opportunities for improvement in the work of the Office, (including improved outreach, more explicit and actionable recommendations, explicit and measurable quality standards for evaluation work) it's essential institutional role of challenging complacency deserves to be preserved.

Yadav, Mukesh, and Deepika Jha. Re-Examine the Model to Manage Revenue Court Cases in Uttar Pradesh. Indian Institute for Human Settlements, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.24943/remmrccup03.2022.

Full text
Abstract:
The Board of Revenue (BoR), Government of Uttar Pradesh, with the technical support of the National Informatics Centre (NIC)–UP, launched an online portal—Revenue Court Computerised Management System (RCCMS)—in the year 2013. Given the services offered by the portal, it is quite evident that the RCCMS has improved the transparency and efficiency in the functioning of revenue courts in Uttar Pradesh. Based on a study conducted by the Indian Institute for Human Settlements (IIHS), the team has found that this portal has the scope for further improvement, despite its technological advancements. This policy brief compares the national level portal (the Supreme Court) and one state (Madhya Pradesh) for such improvisation.
