Aortic valve stenosis (AS) is the most frequent valvular heart disease affecting the western world. Treatment strategies have changed greatly with the advent of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). It is now the treatment of choice not only for patients considered high surgical risk with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis but also in moderate and low risk populations. Multidetector CT (MDCT) angiography allows objective three-dimensional aortic root assessment, iliofemoral access review, and estimation of appropriate projection angles for prosthesis deployment.

Ross Barnett Reservoir is a 13,360-ha impoundment located in central Mississippi that supports a substantial hand grabbing fishery. A roving creel survey was conducted during the 2007 and 2008 Mississippi hand grabbing season (May 1–July 15). Objectives were to estimate catch, harvest, and effort of hand grabbers and to solicit information concerning techniques used by these anglers. A total of 37 parties was interviewed, consisting of 150 total anglers. Seventy percent of the parties interviewed targeted flathead catfish Pylodictis olivaris. Ninety-five percent of the parties used a probe, and all parties fished boxes located at depths of 1–2 m. Average party size was four anglers, indicating that hand grabbing is a social event. For 2007 and 2008, anglers spent an estimated 4,424 and 5,259 h hand grabbing, respectively. An estimated 3,313 and 2,589 catfish were harvested in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Based on size structure of harvested catfish, hand grabbing anglers at Ross Barnett Reservoir do not appear to be size-selective. Most anglers were harvest-oriented, with catch-and-release estimates making up only 12% and 9%, respectively. Future creel surveys should be directed at the total effort allocated toward catfishing, in an effort to determine the effect of hand grabbing on Ross Barnett Reservoir.

Abstract:
Abstract.—Fisheries managers are looking for valid information on basic characteristics of recreational fisheries, such as landings data, to inform management decisions. We present a complementary survey approach designed to generate data on effort and harvest as well as various human dimensions of anglers using a telephonediary- mail survey design for a multispecies, multi-site fishery in a water-rich state in northern Germany (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). First, a nationwide telephone screening was applied to estimate the total number of active resident and nonresident anglers in the study area. Afterwards, a 1-year diary study with randomly recruited resident and nonresident anglers was conducted. Routine check-up telephone calls were used to encourage the participants, generate detailed human dimensions data on the characteristics of anglers, and evaluate diary entries. After the end of the diary study, 648 anglers (58%) returned complete diaries. Responding diarists were significantly older, had a higher level of education, and encompassed more avid anglers than the nonresponding participants. Thus, diarists were weighted against external characteristics of a random sample of the resident angler population to reduce the risk of biased catch and harvest estimates. Indeed, estimates for harvest and effort based on weighted samples were significantly lower than unweighted mean estimates. Extrapolations of average annual harvest rates per angler to the population level revealed that for the most economically important fish species such as European eel Anguilla anguilla, Atlantic cod Gadus morhua, northern pike Esox lucius, common carp Cyprinus carpio, or Eurasian perch Perca fluviatilis, recreational fishing landings greatly exceeded commercial fisheries landings. Because diary estimates of annual angler landings were generally smaller relative to estimates of angler harvest stemming from 3-month recall periods using telephone surveys and on-site creel surveys, we concluded that the use of diary data likely resulted in conservative estimates of total landings. Our survey design may serve as a model for further studies because of its cost-effectiveness relative to standard creel surveys and because the panel structure of diary studies allows rich insights into individual angler behavior that is not possible to be accomplished by cross-sectional creel surveys.

Abstract:
Abstract.—We synthesize results from a number of studies to determine if Muskellunge Esox masquinongy spawning habitat is predictable. Specific objectives are to (1) evaluate characteristics of spawning habitat in a number of different systems; (2) determine if spawning habitat can be predicted from data on land cover, geology, and physical characteristics in the lake or river; and (3) compare spawning habitat in inland lakes and some Great Lakes locations. In inland lakes, Muskellunge preferred to spawn over fine sediments near emergent and submersed vegetation in protected bays or shorelines, but bay and calm shoreline habitat is not always available and may be degraded, so they may end up spawning over open sand, gravel, or coarse particulate organic matter and spawning in areas without vegetation. For objective two, the best-performing MaxEnt model included shoreline development index, presence of nearby shallow areas, distance from outflowing streams, effective fetch, maximum depth, Carlson’s trophic status index, and an indicator of east- or west-facing shoreline as significant factors predicting spawning locations in inland lakes. Overall, 64% of all observed spawning fell within locations predicted by a model, including the most suitable 40% of available habitat for all lakes. For objective 3, we compared habitat selection of Great Lakes-strain Muskellunge with the inland strain. MaxEnt models of habitat for Great Lakes Muskellunge included some similar factors like shallow depth and low slope, but also included river habitat factors like presence of moderate vegetative cover and woody debris. To conclude, we propose a conceptual model of Muskellunge spawning and nursery habitat where survival from egg to larva is limited by water quality, predation on eggs, and abundant food resources.

Abstract:
Abstract.—Fisheries managers may be better equipped to meet angler satisfaction if they understand why people fish and, more importantly, their expectations of the fishing experience. It is important to recognize that the angling population is not comprised of a single, homogeneous group, but is rather a heterogeneous group made up of numerous subgroups. Motivational characteristics of angler subgroups should not be used to generalize to the entire angling population. Experiences that anglers seek from fishing can be divided into those that are activity-specific (unique to fishing) and activity-general (common to all outdoor recreational activities). Fisheries managers have emphasized activity-specific over activity-general elements. A perception that agencies have limited control over activity-general elements may result from limited training in human dimensions, or because most managers feel catch-oriented elements are more important than noncatch, activity-general elements. In urban areas, fisheries managers are adapting to changing cultural and demographic patterns, which shape angler motivations and preferences.

Abstract:
The purpose of this chapter is to review the theories of molecular structure and property relations, to discuss computational methods for prediction of molecular structure and properties, and to discuss some of the properties that can be predicted by computations. Quantum mechanics is the foundation of molecular structure and properties. The position and energy of the electrons around a molecule are determined by solving the Schrödinger equation for a given set of positions of the nuclei of the atoms. There is a lot of powerful and effective computer software that can be used to calculate many of the properties of an isolated single molecule, especially at zero absolute temperature. The starting point is the construction of the sketch of a molecule by connecting atoms with the appropriate bonds. This qualitative sketch does not need accurate values for the bond lengths and angles. To set up the computation, the investigator specifies one of three computation methods: ab initio, semi-empirical, or molecular mechanics. The first and second methods are based on quantum mechanics about a model of the molecule as a number of negatively charged electrons surrounding a collection of positively charged nuclei. The third option of molecular mechanics is based on classical Newtonian mechanics about a model of the molecule as a number of mechanical bonds linking the atoms together, and these bonds can be stretched and bent according to empirical force fields. When either the Schrödinger equation or the Newtonian equation is solved with the initial spatial distribution of nuclei, in what is called the single-point determination, the binding energy of the molecule is obtained. If we make random perturbations of the positions of the various atoms, and repeat the single-point calculations, we can map the energy levels of the molecule in a neighborhood. The most stable or equilibrium position of the molecule is the one with the lowest energy in the neighborhood, and the search for this equilibrium position of the atoms is called geometry optimization. The most rigorous and accurate method of calculation is the ab initio method, which is also the most demanding in computational time and resources, so that it is most often used for smaller molecules.

Most of the Franciscan complex consists of a stack of lawsonite-albite–facies pillow basalt overlain successively by chert and clastic sedimentary rocks, repeated by faults at hundreds of meters to <1 m spacing. Widely distributed mélange zones from 0.5 to 300 m thick containing high-grade (including amphibolite and eclogite) assemblages and other exotic blocks, up to 120 m size, form a small fraction of exposures. Nearly all clastic rocks have a foliation, parallel to faults that repeat the various lithologies, whereas chert and basalt lack foliation. Lawsonite grew parallel to foliation and as later grains across foliation. The Franciscan-bounding faults, collectively called the Coast Range fault, strike ENE to WNW and dip northward at low to moderate average angles and collectively form a south-vergent overturned anticline. Splays of the Coast Range fault also cut into the Franciscan strata and Coast Range ophiolite and locally form the Coast Range ophiolite–Great Valley Group boundary. Dip discordance between the Coast Range fault and overlying Great Valley Group strata indicates that the northern and southern Coast Range fault segments were normal faults with opposite dip directions, forming a structural dome. These relationships suggest accretion and fault stacking of the Franciscan complex, followed by exhumation along the Coast Range fault and then folding of the Coast Range fault.

Abstract:
On a May morning in 1957, ten thousand fish floated on the eastern edge of San Francisco Bay, their pale, upturned bellies bobbing on the surface of the dark water. The crowd of carcasses described an arc that stretched along the shore from Richmond’s harbor south to Point Isabel. Many striped bass, a prized game fish, were among the dead. Seth Gordon, director of California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), fielded complaints from anglers outraged by the fish kill. The Public Health Committee of the State Assembly passed a resolution admonishing DFG for its failure to enforce pollution control laws. Gordon told the committee members off. “We want to stop pollution,” he said, “but the law as it stands puts our Department in the position of a boxer going into the ring with one hand tied behind his back.” The ability to set and enforce pollution standards rested with California’s nine regional water pollution control boards. To effect any change, Gordon’s department had to prove to the boards’ satisfaction that pollution allowed by existing standards was harmful to fish, a challenge that had so far proved impossible. Responding to questions about the East Bay fish kill, he said, “We still don’t know what caused the die-off, or where it came from.” David Joseph was then starting out as a DFG biologist, armed with a doctorate in marine biology from the University of California at Los Angeles. Born in Connecticut, on a cooperative farm where his parents raised dairy cows and shade-grown tobacco with other immigrant Russian Jews, he’d grown up in Inglewood, in southern California, when the place was still a bucolic town and he could ride his horse to the beach. He’d met his wife, Marion, when they were both students at UCLA. “He was an outdoor guy,” she remembers. “He wasn’t a fisherman, he just loved the sea, loved the land. His work was always going to have something to do with protecting the environment.”

The main statement of this paper is that synergetic modeling and co-design of the hardware, software and cyberware parts of complex cyber-physical systems (CPSs) are yet not solved, even from the perspective of an underpinning transdisciplinary theory. CPSs contain functionally tightly connected analog and digital hardware, control, and application software, and knowledge, data, and media contents as cyberware. The lack of a unified theoretical framework and an all-inclusive system conceptualization methodology can be traced back to professional, methodological and cultural differences between

Using a wheelchair can be a challenging task for people with reduced force and control of muscles of abdomen or lower back. Spinal cord injured (SCI) people are the majority of those who are spending most of the day on a wheelchair and a proper training and chair setup is mandatory to reach a good level of functionality and to avoid harms and side effects. In order to assess the complex motion of a person self-pushing a wheelchair, a motion capture (Mocap) system has been arranged and a group of SCI patients has been acquired in a hospital gym. A graphical four bar linkage synthesis method for planar rigid body guidance is presented. This method, capable of synthesis for up to five specified coupler positions, uses the poles and rotation angles, which are constraints, to define guiding links. Faster and simpler than traditional graphical synthesis methods, this method, allows the designer to see and consider most or all the possible solutions within a few seconds before making any free choices. All of the guiding links satisfying five specified coupler positions can be obtained graphically within 30 minutes without plotting any Burme

The paper describes how an existing computer code, VICoMo, see Moe & Arntsen (2002), has been extended to analyse Vortex Induced Vibrations (VIV) of SCR’s for situations in which the flow is neither in the plane of the riser, nor perpendicular to it. Various strategies were attempted in order to make the solution deal with flows at oblique angles. It was found that the best approach was to assume that the riser motions occurred in plane perpendicular to the flow, while motions in the flow direction were disregarded. Abstract Exposed to particle erosion environments, metal-sprayed coatings are damaged by micro-machining and ploughing at low impact angles. The generation and propagation of subsurface lateral cracks at high impacting angles damage single-phase ceramic coatings. Therefore, multicomponent coatings deposited by high-energy processes have been widely used to provide wear protection in most of the applications. As commercial arc-sprayed coatings have been used to a limited extent in applications involving erosion and abrasion wear, developing attractive wear resistant arc-sprayed coatings has bee
