Jones, Anna Barbara. "Auditory comprehension : from the voice up to the single word level." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25387.

Full text
Abstract:
Auditory comprehension, the ability to understand spoken language, consists of a number of different auditory processing skills. In the five studies presented in this thesis I investigated both intact and impaired auditory comprehension at different levels: voice versus phoneme perception, as well as single word auditory comprehension in terms of phonemic and semantic content. In the first study, using sounds from different continua of ‘male’-/pæ/ to ‘female’-/tæ/ and ‘male’-/tæ/ to ‘female’-/pæ/, healthy participants (n=18) showed that phonemes are categorised faster than voice, in contradistinction with the common hypothesis that voice information is stripped away (or normalised) to access phonemic content. Furthermore, reverse correlation analysis suggests that gender and phoneme are processed on the basis of different perceptual representations. A follow-up study (same paradigm) in stroke patients (n=25, right or left hemispheric brain lesions, both with and without aphasia) showed that lesions of the right frontal cortex (likely ventral inferior frontal gyrus) leads to systematic voice perception deficits while left hemispheric lesions can elicit both voice and phoneme deficits. Together these results show that phoneme processing is lateralized while voice information processing requires both hemispheres. Furthermore, this suggests that commencing Speech and Language Therapy at a low level of acoustic processing/voice perception may be an appropriate method in the treatment of phoneme perception impairments. A longitudinal case study (CF) of crossed aphasia (rare acquired communication impairment secondary to lesion ipsilateral to the dominant hand) is then presented alongside a mini-review of the literature. Extensive clinical investigation showed that CF presented with word-finding difficulties related to impaired auditory phonological analysis, while functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) analyses showed right hemispheric lateralization of language functions (reading, repetition and verb generation). These results, together with the co-morbidity analysis from the mini-review, suggest that crossed aphasia can be explained by developmental disorders which cause partial right lateralization shift of language processes. Interestingly, in CF this process did not affect voice lateralization and information processing, suggesting partial segregation of voice and speech processing. In the last two studies, auditory comprehension was examined at the single word level using a word-picture matching task with congruent (correct target) and incongruent (semantic, phonological and unrelated foils) conditions. fMRI in healthy participants (n=16) revealed a key role of the pars triangularis (phonological processing), the left angular gyrus (semantic incongruency) and the left precuneus (semantic relatedness) in this task – regions typically associated via the arcuate fasciculus and often impaired in aphasia. Further investigation of stroke patients on the same task (n=15) suggested that the connections between the angular gyrus and the pars triangularis serve a fundamental role in semantic processing. The quality of a published word-picture matching task was also investigated, with results questioning the clinical relevance of this task as an assessment tool. Finally, a pilot study looking at the effect of a computer-assisted auditory comprehension therapy (React2©) in 6 stroke patients (vs. 6 healthy controls and 6 stroke patients without therapy) is presented. Results show that the more therapy patients carry out the more improvement is seen in the semantic processing of single nouns. However, these results need to be reproduced on a larger scale in order to generalise any outcomes. Overall, the findings from these studies present new insight into, as well as extending on, current cognitive and neuroanatomical models of voice perception, speech perception and single word auditory comprehension. A combinatorial approach to cognitive and neuroanatomical models is proposed in order to further research, and thus improve clinical care, into impaired auditory comprehension.

Abstract:
The process of second language vocabulary acquisition (L2VA) is investigated by looking at the learning, teaching, learner and environmental factors that affect the ways that adult Vietnamese learners of English acquire, store and use words. Data were collected by examination of informants' diaries, recorded classes, free conversations, interview-questionnaires and regular interviews during the English program. The data show that the process of building up the mental lexicon is slow, long and complicated. For adult learners coming from different English and job backgrounds, full time classroom learning is the biggest and most important source of L2 word input. It is also in this environment that the word storage and recall mechanisms are most facilitated. The L2VA process varies according to individual learners at different levels, with different learning goals, motivations, determination, areas of interest and word learning methods. It is hoped that the findings of the study help increase Vietnamese teachers' awareness of how to teach English vocabulary effectively and how to help learners work out individually suitable word learning methods.

Abstract:
Representation of sentences that captures semantics is an essential part of natural language processing systems, such as information retrieval or machine translation. The representation of a sentence is commonly built by combining the representations of the words that the sentence consists of. Similarity between words is widely used as a proxy to evaluate semantic representations. Word similarity models are well-studied and are shown to positively correlate with human similarity judgements. Current evaluation of models of sentential similarity builds on the results obtained in lexical experiments. The main focus is how the lexical representations are used, rather than what they should be. It is often assumed that the optimal representations for word similarity are also optimal for sentence similarity. This work discards this assumption and systematically looks for lexical representations that are optimal for similarity measurement between sentences. We find that the best representation for word similarity is not always the best for sentence similarity and vice versa. The best models in word similarity tasks perform best with additive composition. However, the best result on compositional tasks is achieved with Kroneckerbased composition. There are representations that are equally good in both tasks when used with multiplicative composition. The systematic study of the parameters of similarity models reveals that the more information lexical representations contain, the more attention should be paid to noise. In particular, the word vectors in models with the feature size at the magnitude of the vocabulary size should be sparse, but if a small number of context features is used then the vectors should be dense. Given the right lexical representations, compositional operators achieve state-of-the-art performance, improving over models that use neural-word embeddings. To avoid overfitting, either several test datasets should be used or parameter selection should be based on parameters' average behaviours.

Abstract:
Language is a system that fundamentally influences us as human beings. There are numerous schools of thought critiquing our use of language and celebrating attempts to break free of the control it has over our lives. In that perspective a transformative play with language can be seen as critical play, and a game design approach supporting this kind of play can be defined as critical. The cut-up technique is an aleatory literary technique invented by the Dadaists in the 1920s. It was the fundamental lack of belief in society and language that gave birth to the cut-up method. Mary Flanagan includes it in her book “Critical Play: Radical Game Design” as part of the critical game-design paradigm. The singer-songwriter Dave Kapell invented Magnetic Poetry in the early 90s inspired by the cut-up technique and how artists such as William Burroughs and David Bowie used in their work. I am a co-founder of Ozma Games – a game studio based in Malmö, Sweden. In Ozma we are working on a social word game called Words of Oz. Magnetic Poetry inspired us in the design of Words of Oz, as we wanted to make a casual game that could evoke players’ creativity. The Dadaists clearly wanted to challenge the way we use language. In this essay I will compare the Dadaist cut-up method with its later adaptations Magnetic Poetry and Words of Oz. My question is whether the critical design approach is sustained in Magnetic Poetry and Words of Oz or if the change in technology and framing has limited the subversive potential from which they originated.

Abstract:
Abstract The preverbal vocalisation up to the first word, feeding skills as well as motor development until the first steps of ELBW preterm infants without disability were compared in this descriptive study to those of healthy full-term infants. In addition, preverbal and feeding skills were studied in relation to gross motor movement patterns. The preverbal development of preterm infants proceeded according to the same temporal schedule as that of full-term infants, however, preterm infants failed to produce several vocalisation skills that full-term infants presented. The preterm infants increased their vocalisation slower than the full-term infants in the beginning of each of the developmental stages. The difference between the preterm and the full-term infants grew when approaching syllables, syllable combinations, and words. The preterm infants reached the first word approximately two months later than the full-term infants. The suckling of preterm infants was either disorganised or dysfunctional, while normal or disorganised in the case of full-term infants. The preterm infants reached the spoon-feeding skills approximately at the same (corrected) ages as the full-term infants, but the transitions to new stages were difficult. Half of the preterm infants suffered from feeding problems while only two of the full-term infants had feeding problems. Both the preterm and full-term infants reached vocalisation and feeding skills in relation to gross motor movement patterns earlier than assumed according to the predominant clinical knowledge. The vocalisation and feeding skills did not seem to be dependent upon the gross motor development
Tiivistelmä Tässä kuvailevassa tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin tiiviissä seurannassa erittäin ennenaikaisina ja pienipainoisina syntyneiden lasten esileksikaalista ääntelyä ensisanaan asti sekä syömistaitojen ja motoriikan kehitystä ensiaskeliin asti. Tuloksia verrattiin terveiden, täysiaikaisina syntyneiden lasten vastaaviin taitoihin.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis in Library and Information Science examines the phenomenon ”pop up library” and how public libraries are working with projects within this area. The method to collecting data is qualitative interviews with represents from five libraries in Sweden. The theoretical framework mainly consists of theories from mar- keting management especially adapted for non-profit organizations and libraries. The main results of the study shows that the purpose of why the libraries are using this method is to attract new users, make the library more available, marketing the library, work with reading promotion, start up and/or develop cooperation’s with other organizations or units within the municipality. One desire with the pop up libraries is to attract people to also visit the physical main library but there is also a fear among the informants that some people will think that the pop up library is the only library in the community. Common factors seen in my informants view of pop-up library are: temporary, unexpected and adapted for the target audience and the environment. Pop up libraries is much about relationships, to build and develop relationships with both partners and prospective users. Pop up libraries can be seen as buzz marketing, an effective way to advertise with small means. By making them into "a hot topic" it generates a buzz and publicity in local media. The pop up libraries in this study are primarily implemented as projects, funded by external project funding. They do not require as much resources to implement but is more difficult to engage in regular activities. The opportunities that libraries see with the pop up library concept is to continue to reach out to new audiences by using new creative ways. This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Abstract:
In 2015 a new national Child Health Care Program was introduced in Uppsala County, Sweden. Due to this, the Child Health Center’s speech-language screening for 3-year old’s was moved to 2½ years. The same method of screening - ‘Westerlunds 3-årsmetod’ - is maintained, though there have been a few changes. The children are only expected to use two-word utterances for a passable result, contrary to the earlier requirement for three-word utterances. The absence of three-word utterances now means a follow-up at the age of three. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the part in “Westerlunds 3-årsmetod” which examines length of utterances, by examining if the absence of three-word utterances could be used as an indicator for language difficulties and whether a postponement of the screening (with approximately a month) could ensue in fewer children being called for a follow-up. The participants were recruited through mail to families with children just above the age for the 2½ year speech-language screening. It proved difficult to find participants for the study with the chosen recruitment method and on that account an additional recruitment was implemented. Despite that, none of the possible participants met all the inclusion criteria in the end, which meant that the prospective analyses could not be performed and therefore the research questions could not be entirely answered. A choice was made to analyze the already collected data, meaning that the entire group of children screened in the right age range (2:6-2:9) were examined. The group consisted of 26 children, 14 girls and 12 boys. The average age was 2:6 years (min: 2:6, max: 2:8). Of these 8% (2 children) were not using three-word utterances, although they also had other difficulties. Based on this group vague indications could be seen suggesting that a connection between age and the time of screening does not exist. Most of the children, 95%, screened at the age of 2:6 years passed the screening without remarks. Furthermore, it turned out that some children were screened as early as 2:5 with passable results. Consequently, no data in this study supports the notion that a postponement of the screening would result in fewer follow-ups. It should be noted that due to insufficient data no clear conclusions can be drawn.

Dambacher, Michael. "Bottom-up and top-down processes in reading : influences of frequency and predictability on event-related potentials and eye movements." Universität Potsdam, 2010. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2010/4202/.

Full text
Abstract:
In reading, word frequency is commonly regarded as the major bottom-up determinant for the speed of lexical access. Moreover, language processing depends on top-down information, such as the predictability of a word from a previous context. Yet, however, the exact role of top-down predictions in visual word recognition is poorly understood: They may rapidly affect lexical processes, or alternatively, influence only late post-lexical stages. To add evidence about the nature of top-down processes and their relation to bottom-up information in the timeline of word recognition, we examined influences of frequency and predictability on event-related potentials (ERPs) in several sentence reading studies. The results were related to eye movements from natural reading as well as to models of word recognition. As a first and major finding, interactions of frequency and predictability on ERP amplitudes consistently revealed top-down influences on lexical levels of word processing (Chapters 2 and 4). Second, frequency and predictability mediated relations between N400 amplitudes and fixation durations, pointing to their sensitivity to a common stage of word recognition; further, larger N400 amplitudes entailed longer fixation durations on the next word, a result providing evidence for ongoing processing beyond a fixation (Chapter 3). Third, influences of presentation rate on ERP frequency and predictability effects demonstrated that the time available for word processing critically co-determines the course of bottom-up and top-down influences (Chapter 4). Fourth, at a near-normal reading speed, an early predictability effect suggested the rapid comparison of top-down hypotheses with the actual visual input (Chapter 5). The present results are compatible with interactive models of word recognition assuming that early lexical processes depend on the concerted impact of bottom-up and top-down information. We offered a framework that reconciles the findings on a timeline of word recognition taking into account influences of frequency, predictability, and presentation rate (Chapter 4).

Abstract:
In this work a novel algorithm for testing language equivalence and inclusion on tree automata is proposed and implemented as a module in the VATA library. First, existing approaches to equivalence and inclusion testing on both word and tree automata are examined. These existing approaches are then modified to create bisimulation up-to congruence algorithm for tree automata and a formal proof of the soundness of the new algorithm is provided. Efficiency of this new approach is compared with existing language equivalence and inclusion testing methods for tree automata, showing the performance of our algorithm on hard cases is often superior.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to identify the aesthetic, ethical and political issues of experimental poetry from 1960 to 1980. It deals with the works of J. Blaine, W. S. Burroughs and E. Miccini. This work offers a reflection upon the poetic experiments taking place during a period of strong societal, economic and media switch. After the establishment of a genealogy of the experimental practices of collage and montage, it is now about placing this experimental poetry in a neo-avant-garde model, which involves a re-evaluation of practices inherited from the beginning of the twentieth century and a functioning in a network, making the individual and the collective dialogue. Henceforth, the thesis shows that the renewal of the poetics that takes place in the era of a society of the image relies on on technical evolution : it is about creating with and against the book. The new relationship between poetic. The new relationship between poetic and book-based creation and issues of reproducibility, mainly by offset, creates a perspective of the work with the notions of imprint and ruin. Thus, the imprint constitutes a new paradigm which endorses the unstable ontological status of a work which works on the materiality of its support and which alters a traditional, only verbal dimension. Resistance to traditional forms implies a commitment, in form and substance : different strategies are then developed by the authors, which allow to establish aesthetic policies of which the aim is to make the reader / spectator access a formative and ethical aesthetic experience

Yoars, Katherine Grace. "Open Up or Build Up?: International and Domestic Factors of Poverty Reduction in the Developing World." OpenSIUC, 2009. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/511.

Full text
Abstract:
One of the most important issues for states in the developing world is how to best reduce poverty. Do international or domestic factors matter more for poverty reduction? Does trade openness lead to increased or decreased poverty, or does the quality of domestic institutions decrease the level of poverty in a state? This thesis presents a straightforward analysis of these two explanations in the developing world. Using cross-sectional data from 1998 and 1999, I utilize ordinary least squares regression to estimate the general effects on state poverty levels of two concepts: trade openness and domestic institutions. I find that domestic institutions and level of development tend to decrease poverty in developing countries. Evidence for the link between trade openness and poverty is mixed. I then consider three additional concepts: capital openness, secure property rights, and foreign direct investment. When looking at these added international and domestic factors along with the original three, I find that capital openness and level of development have an impact on poverty reduction in the developing world, as does winning coalition size if it is given more than a year to take effect.

Polaha, Jodi, and Leonard B. Cross. "Teaming up in Primary Care: Sustainable Models in the Real World." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2017. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/6564.

Full text
Abstract:
Emerging research has shown that there are sustainable models for collaborative practice in primary care (Corso, Hunter, Dahl, Kallenberg, & Manson, 2016; Robinson & Reiter, 2014). The adaptation of these innovative practice models into currently functioning primary care p practices requires health care professionals to be flexible in order to “fit” interventions into a service delivery model that is oriented to population health. A significant driver of interprofessional practice implementation will be the dissemination of: 1) these models across the spectrum of health care providers and 2) solid business plans demonstrating sustainability. The uptake of long-standing, non-student based collaborative practice models in primary care is essential for the future of interprofessional education (IPE; Earnest & Brandt, 2014). First, the establishment of strong team-based primary care practices provides true and practical application of classroom concepts learned during foundational IPE training. Second, a critical extension of IPE in health care professions training programs is seeding local practices with newly minted providers who are prepared to develop these sustainable models. These providers are situated to: 1) demonstrate the value of IPE in the real world, 2) provide high fidelity training sites for future IPE students, and 3) lead the field of interprofessional practice and innovation. At East Tennessee State University, we have assisted several IPE post-doctoral trainees in developing positions in collaborative primary care around our region. Today, several psychology and pharmacy graduates are working in primary care clinics based in urban and rural areas, academic health center and private-sector health care settings, and within for-profit and federally-qualified health care. These new professionals have increased the demand for interprofessionally trained providers, prepared for an adaptation to primary care. They have initiated training programs and serve as a model for our current IPE students. In this interactive workshop, we will provide attendees with information on best-practice collaborative models for primary care practice as well as an overview of our business strategy for growing sustainable permanent positions for our graduates with discussion about how to generalize these to new professsions. The session will be structured around two "theory bursts”: one which elaborates integrated practice models and one which describes business models and how to “sell” interprofessional practice. The dissemination of this information will occur in the context of participant engagement. Specifically, we will use small group discussion exercises to facilitate adapting specialty/siloed care to the primary care environment and applying models & plans to participants’ specific situations.

Kuluk, Balazs. "Application of carbon dioxide in reaction work-up and purification procedures." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6522/.

Full text
Abstract:
The production of fine chemicals, including active pharmaceutical ingredients, can lead to large amounts of waste, including by-products and contaminated solvents. In many cases, it is actually the work-up of the reaction and purification, rather than the reaction itself, which is responsible. CO2-based procedures have been developed, which can potentially alleviate some of these problems. They can be summarised as follows: I. The distribution of certain organic bases/acids between organic and aqueous phases could be tuned by exposing the two phases to CO2, exploiting a pH change due the acidic character of CO2. The induced change could be reversible by physical decarboxylation. Numerous amines and other organic bases were tested for CO2 aided aqueous extraction. Connection between their pKa and logP was found, and an empiric formula was proposed to predict the possibility of extraction. Concentration dependence of the CO2 aided aqueous extraction and rate of the chemical free neutralisation were also investigated for benzyl amines and drug molecules with amine functions. II. CO2 can enhance the ability to precipitate of certain amines, exploiting a carbamate formation reaction. This would dramatically reduce the amount of acid and base required for preparation of amine salt derivatives and neutralisation. Tendencies of several secondary amines for CO2 adduct formation were tested, and detailed analysis of these often labile compounds was discussed. Possibility of carbamate formation based separation was demonstrated. III. CO2 could be used to induce precipitation of polar compounds from their solution at elevated pressures when utilised as an antisolvent, exploiting its nonpolar character and its solubility in organic solvents. Numerous solute-solvent systems were exposed to pressurised CO2, either above or under its critical temperature. High pressures can often be a limitations for industrial procedures. Operation at lower temperatures allowed the application of lower pressures, because of the decreased vapour pressure of liquid CO2. Possibility to separate solute mixtures was also demonstrated.

Abstract:

This thesis presents an analysis of the presence of silence as a form of tension within the construction of the contemporary comic discourse. In order to reach this point, nonetheless, we have considered it essential to articulate a medial archaeology that will allow us to establish a diachronic path through the different forms that audiovisual comedy has adopted over the years. The dissertation will ultimately focus on three male comedians representing three contemporary audiovisual comedy practices: film comedy, sitcom and stand-up comedy. Thus, we will establish a series of dialogues between the comedy works of Adam Sandler, Louis C.K. and Drew Michael that will help us to examine the way in which silence as a form of tension regarding their texts and performances destabilizes comedy as a genre and, conversely, the comic personas they had forged throughout their careers.

Abstract:
Initiallly, this study retraces the path of Social Work in family courts in Rio de Janeiro, since the times of the normative perspective, that first marked the insertion of the profession in the Judiciary, up to the present time. Having as fieldwork the professional practice of the author, the historical acccount points to new directions for Social Work practice, in line with changes taking place in legislation. In a second step, the research focuses on families that litigate in the courts, having in perspective the changes that took place in family organization over the last decades. When approaching families in litigation in the context of broader social changes the study proposes a break-up with the normative standards that have characterized family Social Work. By capturing the speech of fathers and mothers that look for the courts in the face of impasses occurring after separation processes, the study helps to unveil to what extent these very same impasses reflect contemporary changes that affect the foundations of family ties. As such, the normative approach that has marked Social Work yields in the face of a perspective that favors the guarantee of rights that presently characterizes the profession.

Abstract:

I fältstudien förblev arbetsbelastningen oförändrad men apteringstiderna minskade.

Wachtmeister, Henrik. "World oil supply and unconventional resources : Bottom-up perspectives on tight oil production." Licentiate thesis, Uppsala universitet, Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-350864.

Full text
Abstract:
Oil is the world’s largest primary energy source. It dominates the transportation sector which underpins the world economy. Yet, oil is a nonrenewable resource, destined not to last forever. In the mid-2000s global conventional oil production stagnated, leading to rising oil prices and fears of permanent oil scarcity. These fears, together with the high prices, receded with the unforeseen emergence of a new supply source: tight oil. This licentiate thesis investigates unconventional tight oil production and its impacts on world oil supply in terms of resource availability and oil market dynamics, and in turn briefly discusses some possible wider economic, political and environmental implications of these impacts. The thesis is based on three papers. The first investigates the usefulness of bottom-up modelling by a retrospective study of past oil projections. The second looks at how unconventional tight oil production can be modelled on the well level using decline curve analysis. The third derives typical production parameters for conventional offshore oil fields, a growing segment of conventional production and a useful comparison to tight oil. The results show that tight oil production has increased resource availability significantly, as well as introduced a fast responding marginal supply source operating on market principles rather than political ones. The emergence of tight oil production has altered OPEC’s strategic options and led to a period of lower and less volatile oil prices. However, this condition of world oil supply can only last as long as the unconventional resource base allows, and, at the same time, total fossil fuel consumption will have to fall to limit climate change. It is concluded that this breathing space with lower oil prices could be used as an opportunity to develop and implement policy for an efficient managed decline of global oil use in order to achieve the dual goals of increased human economic welfare and limited climate change, and in the process preempt any future oil supply shortage. Unconventional tight oil production can both help and hinder in this endeavor. Accurate models and analyses of oil production dynamics and impacts are therefore crucial when maneuvering towards this preferred future.

Mushunje, Frank. "Social wokers' views of the risky behaviour of adolescents growing up without a father." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/77307.

Full text
Abstract:
Father absence is a crucial factor in understanding the behaviour of adolescents and younger children. Reports of child and youth misbehaviour, for instance; school-related misbehaviours, early sexual activities, substance abuse, aggression and violence are frequent at schools and in the communities. The absence of a father may lead to adolescents engaging in risky behaviour. On the other hand, research indicates that the positive contribution of the father in the family can potentially contribute to a decrease in risky behaviour in adolescents and shield them from abuse and exploitation. Social workers deal with families, including children who present with risky behaviour. The social workers thus have experience in this context. The research study aimed at exploring and describing the views of social workers on the risky behaviours displayed by adolescents who are raised without their fathers in the City of Ekurhuleni South Africa. The study was applied research, qualitative and underpinned by the Family Systems and Bioecological theoretical frameworks. Purposive sampling as non-probability sampling was used to select participants from the study population. Face-to-face and semi-structured interviews were conducted by the researcher to collect data from nineteen participants working in four different organisations providing social welfare services to children and families in Ekurhuleni. The researcher followed a thorough data analysis process to thematically analyse the data to ensure the quality and trustworthiness of the findings. Findings were categorised into six main themes which centred on the circumstances confronting adolescents in Ekurhuleni, the roles of fathers towards adolescents, father absence and the parentification of children, the emotional well-being of adolescents growing up without a father, father absence and misbehaviour in adolescents and recommendations made by participants to address father absence and related social problems. Recommendations from the study are that adolescents growing up without fathers need access to recreational services, life skills and therapeutic services to help them cope with the absence of their fathers. Mentorship programmes are necessary to empower both adolescent boys and girls to break the cycle of father absence and become responsible adults in the future. The recommendations are for social workers, policymakers, and organisations to consider when working with children and families to effectively address father absence, and suggestions for future research were made. The study gives a better understanding of the underlying problems of adolescent misbehaviour and how father absence can negatively affect the well-being of adolescents. Key Concepts • Adolescence • Children • Father absence • Risky behaviour • Fatherhood • Social workers

Abstract:
Women with enduring mental illness are little considered in research and there is a dearth of occupational therapy literature concerning mental illness, although a third of therapists work in this speciality. This study explored two groups of women within a Scottish context. Phase One involved five women who lived with enduring mental illness, and Phase Two included sixteen occupational therapists who worked in mental health settings with similar women. Qualitative methodology, specifically, life history and focus group interviews, were used to give voice to the women's life and therapists' work experiences. The data from the women's life history interviews was analysed using narrative analysis. This produced a unique, powerful narrative for each illustrating their complex, individualised experiences, allowing insight into and understanding of effects within their lives. This data was then analysed using constant comparative analysis. Six themes portrayed their lives. The findi ngs highlighted the women's experiences as victims and importantly, as agents for themselves and others. Related to their personal agency was the need for future goals and hopes to be recognised and nurtured by health professionals. Furthermore, the significance of the women's experiences along the continuum of motherhood adds to our understanding of the long-term impact of continuing mental illness on women, their children and families. Overall, the women identified that they were experts in their own lives. The focus group material was also subjected to constant comparative analysis. Five themes encapsulated the processes that underpinned therapists' interventions and the inter-dependency of their actions within specific work contexts. Comparison across the two groups of women revealed three common issues: their need for safe environments, their feelings of powerlessness and the importance of being heard. These findings have implications for occupational therapy practice and research specifically as well as conveying important lessons to other professionals.

Abstract:
Today many saproxylic species are threatened because of habitat decline in Europe. Hollow trees represent a great part of the habitats that saproxylic species use. Since hollows takes a long time to develop, management actions are needed to prevent the extinction of saproxylic species. The aim of this study was to investigate the succession of saproxylic beetle species in artificial habitats in the form of wooden boxes. Wooden boxes were filled with a potential substrate and placed at different distances (0-1800 m) from oak hollow hot spots. In addition to the start mixture, four different additional substrates were added. In total, 4510 specimens of 114 saproxylic beetle species were sampled in 43 boxes over ten years. The specimens of tree-hollow species, wood rot species and nest species increased with 38% from the fourth to the final year but species richness decline from 47 to 29, respectively. A dead hen had a tendency for attracting more species but the small effect of different added substrates diminished over the years and had no significant effect on species richness after ten years. There was a higher similarity in species richness after ten years between the boxes and real hollow oaks. In conclusion, the artificial habitat developed into a more hollow like environment, with fewer but more abundant wood mould specialists, during ten years. This study clearly shows that the wooden boxes are used as habitats for saproxylic species as the boxes seems to develop into a more hollow-like habitat with time.

Smith, Byron Glen. "Waking up to a warming world : prospects for Christian ethical deliberation amidst climate fears." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/29597.

Full text
Abstract:
The recent rapid warming of the planet, driven overwhelmingly by human emissions and activities, represents a novel and dire threat to both human and natural systems. It also constitutes an unprecedented global injustice, with those facing the first and, in many cases, the worst impacts being least responsible for causing the problem: the global poor, other species and future generations. Awakening to such a threat also presents a challenge for ethical deliberation, through provoking deep emotional responses that disturb settled identities. In view of all this, the task of ethical deliberation is urgently required. Yet it is itself vulnerable to being derailed by a variety of coping mechanisms that operate to keep the true scale of the problem below the level of our full attention and prevent the necessary frank assessment of what may be required of us. These largely unconscious protective strategies also open the door to those very emotions being exploited by the cultural, economic and political forces primarily responsible for the crisis in the first place. Hence, superficial and inadequate responses proliferate while many feel paralysed into inaction. In the face of this threat to thought, this project seeks to articulate an identity and stance based on Christian theological resources that opens up new space for ethical deliberation in the face of climate fears. Instead of being paralysed by such fears, this thesis argues that fear can instead illuminate and motivate when it is resituated in the service of love through solidarity with the suffering Christ, the poor and with the whole community of creation.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the ways in which women make sense of their experiences of household work over the life course and in the context of various relationships, with a particular focus on mother/daughter relationships. Using in-depth interviews with 24 heterosexual women (comprising 12 pairs of mothers and their adult daughters, who themselves were mothers of young children), this research investigates the role household work plays in women’s personal narratives and the construction of relational narrated selves and narrative identities. By moving away from a ‘snapshot’ approach to housework that focuses on the division of tasks within heterosexual couples, this thesis positions household work as part of our personal lives (Smart, 2007), and something that is made sense of relationally, despite dominant discourses of individualism. Similarly, conceiving of people within personal timescapes in which multiple dimensions of time intersect allows for an understanding of household work as part of our personal lives over the life course, as well as inter-generational relationships and broader historical change. Considering multiple social dimensions of gender, heterosexuality and family, allows for an understanding of how accounting for one’s household practices in relation to various discourses can be understood as doing gender, heterosexuality and family. The construction of relational narrated selves in process show how growing up as a woman is shaped particularly by discourses of emphasised femininity (in the context of normative heterosexuality) and good motherhood, and constructing narrative identities in relation to these discourses involves demonstrating acceptable femininity and maternal responsibility, which works to (re)produce gender, heterosexuality and family. By focusing on the themes of relationality, temporality and the interplay between gender, heterosexuality and family across multiple social dimensions, this thesis uses household work as a lens to draw out useful theoretical links between these key themes.

Abstract:

The purpose of this project was to design a 3-year pilot program, identify funding sources, and write a grant proposal to fund an extended services reentry program, Helping Hands to New Beginnings (HH2NB), in Los Angeles, California. A review of literature revealed that the City of Los Angeles does not have sufficient reintegration programs to compensate for the influx of parolees. The proposed program would provide male parolees with reintegration services that target their criminogenic needs over a 3-year period. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration was selected as the most appropriate funder to support this program. The identified host agency is the Weingart Center that provides homeless individuals with the skills necessary to rehabilitate and re-stabilize their lives, secure employment, and find long-term housing. The actual submission or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of the project.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the discourses and organisations through which girls' development towards adult womanhood was framed and managed during the inter-war period. It examines how contemporary perceptions of social change following the First World War resulted in widespread scrutiny of girls' circumstances and behaviour, particularly their sexual conduct. It argues that representations and responses to girls were increasingly underpinned by the conceptualisation of adolescence as a critical period of change and instability. This understanding of adolescence pervaded both medical and lay discourses. It was interpreted through the prisms of gender and class, and served to legitimise increasing levels of intervention into girls' lives, mainly on the basis of their sexual behaviour or perceived exposure to sexual risk. Adolescence was also represented as the period in which individuals developed moral agency. This study examines the increased importance ascribed to the moral training of the adolescent, in the context of widespread agreement of the need to express traditional moral values in ways that took account of social change. This was seen as particularly important for girls, not only because of their changing circumstances, but because of women's new status as enfranchised citizens. The thesis explores the work of the Girl Guides Association and the Young Women's Christian Association in some detail. These organisations drew upon the discourse of social change, adolescence and citizenship to claim an enhanced role in shaping the development of young women. While histories of girls' youth organisations have tended to portray them as conservative movements intent on socialising girls into their future role as wives and mothers, this study highlights these organisations' commitment to preparing girls to understand and exercise their future responsibilities as citizens, and argues that such organisations were more complex in their purposes, and more varied in their approaches, than has previously been recognised.

Sieck, Barbara C. "How do we show up in the world: the psychological implications of women's naming decisions." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/1502.

Abstract:
In the United States, over ninety percent of women take their husbands' last names when they marry; the remaining women keep, hyphenate, or alter their last name in some other way. Although many disciplines have examined this subject, counseling psychology has had little to say on the matter. This study investigates American women's naming decisions through the lens of the Social Cognitive Theory of Gender Development and Differentiation and seeks to shed light on its significance to counseling psychology. The qualitative methodology grounded theory is employed to examine the factors that contribute to naming choices as well as to better understand the psychological implications of such decisions. Findings suggest that naming decisions may impact identity, gender roles, partner relational concerns, family dynamics, empowerment, career issues, multicultural considerations, and power differentials, all of which are topics that are relevant for counseling psychologists. The discussion explores the relevance of this issue for women who are actively making, or have already made, a naming choice. Larger implications for the field of psychology are also considered.
