Abstract:

Abstract:
Based on the theory of symbolic dynamical systems, we propose a novel computation method to locate and stabilize the unstable periodic points (UPPs) in a two-dimensional dynamical system with a Smale horseshoe. This method directly implies a new framework for controlling chaos. By introducing the subset based correspondence between a planar dynamical system and a symbolic dynamical system, we locate regions sectioned by stable and unstable manifolds comprehensively and identify the specified region containing a UPP with the particular period. Then Newton’s method compensates the accurate location of the UPP with the regional information as an initial estimation. On the other hand, the external force control (EFC) is known as an effective method to stabilize the UPPs. By applying the EFC to the located UPPs, robust controlling chaos is realized. In this framework, we never use ad hoc approaches to find target UPPs in the given chaotic set. Moreover, the method can stabilize UPPs with the specified period regardless of the situation where the targeted chaotic set is attractive. As illustrative numerical experiments, we locate and stabilize UPPs and the corresponding unstable periodic orbits in a horseshoe structure of the Duffing equation. In spite of the strong instability of UPPs, the controlled orbit is robust and the control input retains being tiny in magnitude.

Abstract:
Although cognitive distortions are widely acknowledged in the explanation of impulsivity-related psychopathologies (and more recently in the explanation of specific impulsive behaviors), no study has systematically verified whether they can also explain the cognitive processes underlying these impulsivity traits of personality: urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, and sensation seeking (UPPS). Moreover, childhood maltreatment has been frequently associated with both cognitive distortions and impulsive behaviors but never with UPPS traits. A study was conducted on undergraduate students to examine the influence of cognitive distortions and childhood maltreatment on four dimensions of impulsivity from the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale. Regression analyses revealed that Premature Processing, a term applied to a group of seven cognitive distortions such as emotional reasoning and confusing needs and wants, as well as childhood maltreatment, was able to predict significantly and independently the Negative Urgency dimension of impulsivity, above and beyond gender and the three other subscales of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale. Coherent with Beck’s cognitive model, these results suggest that the Negative Urgency trait is associated with cognitive distortions that can undermine thought processes in a variety of ways, increasing the likelihood of acting rashly. However, more studies are needed to develop instruments and identify specific forms of cognitive distortions associated with impulsivity traits.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTUndecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase (UppS) catalyzes the formation of the C55lipid carrier (UPP) that is essential for bacterial peptidoglycan biosynthesis. We selected here a vancomycin (VAN)-resistant derivative ofBacillus subtilisW168 that contains a single-point mutation in the ribosome-binding site of theuppSgene designateduppS1. Genetic reconstruction experiments demonstrate that theuppS1allele is sufficient to confer low-level VAN resistance and causes reduced UppS translation. The decreased level of UppS rendersB. subtilisslightly more susceptible to many late-acting cell wall antibiotics, including β-lactams, but significantly more resistant to fosfomycin andd-cycloserine, antibiotics that interfere with the very early steps of cell wall synthesis. We further show that theuppS1allele leads to slightly elevated expression of the σMregulon, possibly helping to compensate for the stress caused by a decrease in UPP levels. Notably, theuppS1mutation increases resistance to VAN, fosfomycin, andd-cycloserine in wild-type cells, but this effect is greatly reduced or eliminated in asigMmutant background. Our findings suggest that, although UppS is an attractive antibacterial target, incomplete inhibition of UppS function may lead to increased resistance to some cell wall-active antibiotics.

Abstract:
The current study attempts to clarify the multi‐faceted nature of impulsivity through the use of the four‐factor UPPS Impulsive Behaviour scale. In order to build the nomological network surrounding this scale, the UPPS was administered to individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), pathological gamblers (PG), alcohol abusers (divided into two groups based on the presence of antisocial features), and a control group. Several of the UPPS scales (e.g. Urgency, lack of Premeditation, and Sensation Seeking) differentiated the BPD, PG, and alcohol abusers with antisocial features from a group of non‐antisocial alcohol abusers and a control group. Overall, the UPPS scales accounted for between 7% (pathological gambling) and 64% (borderline personality disorder features) of the overall variance in the psychopathology measures. Individual UPPS scales also made unique contributions to several of these disorders, which may provide insight into which of these personality traits may predispose individuals to behave in maladaptive or problematic ways. The results provide support for the differentiation of impulsivity‐related constructs into the current four‐factor model. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:
The present research broadens the understanding of the multidimensional nature of impulsivity by investigating the validity of a German adaptation of the UPPS scale of impulsivity ( Whiteside & Lynam, 2001 ). Two studies utilizing paper-pencil and computerized administration replicated the internal structure of the UPPS, provided evidence for convergent and discriminant validity utilizing self- and peer-reports, demonstrated incremental validity for the UPPS scale over the respective personality facets, and investigated the relationships between self-reported impulsivity and behavioral measures including perceptual speed and response latencies. Taken together, results not only confirm the reliability and validity of the German UPPS scale but also prove its benefit in predicting relevant criteria beyond well-established personality questionnaires. Significant but weak correlations with behavioral measures of cognitive aspects of impulsivity were particularly observed for (lack of) Premeditation and (lack of) Perseverance.

Abstract:
UPPS (undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase) catalyses consecutive condensation reactions of FPP (farnesyl pyrophosphate) with eight isopentenyl pyrophosphates to generate C55 UPP, which serves as a lipid carrier for bacterial peptidoglycan biosynthesis. We reported the co-crystal structure of Escherichia coli UPPS in complex with FPP. Its phosphate head-group is bound to positively charged arginine residues and the hydrocarbon moiety interacts with hydrophobic amino acids including L85, L88 and F89, located on the α3 helix of UPPS. We now show that the monophosphate analogue of FPP binds UPPS with an eight times lower affinity (Kd=4.4 μM) compared with the pyrophosphate analogue, a result of a larger dissociation rate constant (koff=192 s−1). Farnesol (1 mM) lacking the pyrophosphate does not inhibit the UPPS reaction. GGPP (geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate) containing a larger C20 hydrocarbon tail is an equally good substrate (Km=0.3 μM and kcat=2.1 s−1) compared with FPP. The shorter C10 GPP (geranyl pyrophosphate) displays a 90-fold larger Km value (36.0±0.1 μM) but similar kcat value (1.7±0.1 s−1) compared with FPP. Replacement of L85, L88 or F89 with Ala increases FPP and GGPP Km values by the same amount, indicating that these amino acids are important for substrate binding, but do not determine substrate specificity. With GGPP as a substrate, UPPS still catalyses eight isopentenyl pyrophosphate condensation reactions to synthesize C60 product. Computer modelling suggests that the upper portion of the active-site tunnel, where cis double bonds of the product reside, may be critical for determining the final product chain length.

Abstract:
Introduction: The aim of the present study was to validate the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-11th version) scale as well as the short version of the Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS-P) in a population of Greek young adults. Secondly, we aimed at validating the BIS-11 in older adults. Methods: 167 (Group 1) university students completed the Greek version of the BIS-11 (BIS-11-G) and the UPPS (UPPS-P-G) scales. Additionally, BIS-11-G was also administered to 167 (Group 2) cognitively intact older adults, to identify whether it could be used to measure impulsivity in an older adult population. Results: Both scales had satisfactory internal reliability and test–retest reliability, as well as convergent validity in the young adult population. In regard to the factor structure, a principal component analysis (PCA) extracted two factors for the BIS-11-G in the young adult population and three factors in older adults, as well as three factors for the short UPPS-P-G in young adults. Conclusions: The BIS-11-G and the UPPS-P-G scales can be used to measure different aspects of impulsivity in the Greek population of different ages in research and clinical practice.

Abstract:
Impulsivity is an important and multifaceted psychological construct. Recently, Whiteside and Lynam (2001) have developed the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale that distinguishes four dimensions of impulsivity: Urgency, lack of Premeditation, lack of Perseverance, and Sensation seeking. In the present study, we investigated the psychometric properties of a French adaptation of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale. Two hundred and thirty-four undergraduate students completed the UPPS Scale. Exploratory and confirmatory analyses revealed a four factors solution similar to that found in the original study. Also, the results indicated that there was good to very good internal reliability for the four subscales.

Objective: Impulsivity is a multifaceted construct known to play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of a wide range of problematic behaviors and psychological disorders in children. Method: In this study, we adapted the short French adult version of the UPPS-P (urgency–premeditation–perseverance–sensation seeking–positive urgency) Impulsive Behaviors Scale for use with children (short UPPS-P-C) and tested its psychometric properties. Results: Confirmatory factor analyses conducted on a sample of 425 children (aged 8-14 years) supported the five-factor structure of the scale. Additional analyses emphasized the good internal and test–retest reliability of the short UPPS-P-C. Furthermore, our results also revealed that lack of premeditation, positive urgency, and negative urgency subscales were able to discriminate between children diagnosed with ADHD and their matched controls. Conclusion: These results suggest that the short UPPS-P-C may be considered as a promising time-saving tool to assess impulsivity traits in healthy children and in children with psychiatric disorders.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Pacification Police Units – UPPs – implemented in Rio de Janeiro since 2008 have as one of their stated goals the promotion of the integration between the pacified favelas and the ‘formal’ city, aiming to overcome the view of Rio as a ‘divided city’. Intending to problematize the reasoning behind this stated goal in order to question the UPPs’ very foundations, this article examines the political and sociospatial background in which they were introduced. The implementation and operation of the UPPs is outlined in the context of the militarization of Rio’s spaces, and especially of its urban poor regions, within an analysis of what assumptions about favelas and slum residents the UPPs imply. The UPPs are analyzed in dialogue with Giorgio Agamben’s work as a sovereign act of ‘drawing lines of distinction’ between lives worth living and politically worthless ‘Others’. It becomes clear that they are guilty of articulating and reinforcing what Teresa Caldeira has named the ‘talk of crime’, a Manicheistic discourse through which Brazilians articulate and cope with their daily encounter with violence. The disjunctive nature of Brazil’s ‘inclusively inegalitarian’ democracy, as explored by James Holston, is emphasized. Brazil emerges as a post-dictatorial country, in which neoliberal reforms and democratic opening have simultaneously implied an increasingly authoritarian penal state that targets the urban marginalized as its ‘internal enemies’.

Abstract:
Undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthase (UPPS) catalyzes the consecutive condensation of 8 molecules of isopentenyl pyrophosphate with farnesyl pyrophosphate to yield C55-undecaprenyl pyrophosphate, which is required for bacterial cell wall synthesis. UPPS is found in both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and based on the differences between bacterial variants of UPPS and their human counterpart, dolicopyrophosphate synthase, it was identified as an attractive antibacterial target. An assay, which monitors the release of Pi by coupling the UPPS catalyzed reaction with inorganic pyrophosphatase, was employed to conduct an HTS campaign using an inhouse collection of compounds. A direct assay measuring the incorporation of 14C-IPP (isopentenyl pyrophosphate) was used as a secondary assay to evaluate the high-throughput screening (HTS) hits. From the HTS campaign, a few classes of UPPS inhibitors were identified. During the process of hit evaluation by the direct assay, the authors observed that Triton, an essential factor for the enzyme activity and accurate formation of the natural product, dramatically altered the inhibitory activity of a particular class of compounds. Above its critical micellar concentration (CMC), Triton abolished the inhibitory activity of these compounds. Further research will be required to establish the biophysical phenomenon that causes this effect. Meanwhile, it can be speculated that Triton (and other detergents) above CMC may hinder the identification in screening compounds of certain classes of hits.

Abstract:
The UPPS–P model of impulsivity is gaining popularity among personality and substance use researchers, but questions remain as to whether its five facets have incremental validity in explaining substance use over a more parsimonious model specifying only two facets: reward drive and rash impulsiveness. In three cross–sectional studies (total N = 486), we investigated whether the novel components of the UPPS–P model (negative Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation seeking, Positive urgency) predicted typical and problematic alcohol and cannabis use after accounting for reward drive, rash impulsiveness and trait neuroticism (assessed with the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire). Reward drive and rash impulsiveness scores were calculated using principal components analysis of multiple scales, including UPPS–P premeditation and sensation seeking. Results showed that rash impulsiveness was a robust predictor of typical and problematic substance use. The novel facets of the UPPS–P did not improve prediction of typical substance use. The urgency scales inconsistently predicted problematic use. Specifically, negative urgency predicted one of three measures of negative consequences from alcohol use, and positive urgency only predicted negative consequences from cannabis use. Results suggest that the three novel facets of the UPPS–P model add little over a two component model in explaining substance use, although may provide preliminary evidence for the utility of a revised global urgency construct in explaining problematic substance use. Abstract:
Impulsive personality is a widely used construct for the prediction of multiple clinical problems; however, research has often disregarded important differences in its conceptualization and measurement across age and sex. The goals of this article are to test the invariance of, to compare mean differences in, and to examine the differential validity of the Urgency (negative), Premeditation (lack of), Perseverance (lack of), Sensation Seeking, with added subscale of Positive Urgency (UPPS-P) Impulsive Behavior Scale across adult age and sex. The data for this study were obtained from 799 participants in the Nathan Kline Institute’s Rockland Sample. Multigroup invariance analysis indicated full invariance of the UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale across age and sex. However, invariance analysis as a function of age using Multiple-Indicators Multiple-Causes modeling identified three items with differential item functioning. Sensation Seeking was higher in males and lower as age increased. In general, age and sex did not moderate the relationships between UPPS-P traits and risk-taking behaviors, with the exception of cannabis use. Overall, the results of this study support that the UPPS-P scale can be validly used to assess and compare impulsive personality across the adult life span and sex. We suggest the removal of Items 5, 28, and 51 when using the UPPS-P with older adults to be overly cautious to age invariance effects.

The present study investigated the association between nonsuicidal self-injury characteristics, functions, and the UPPS-P impulsivity-related traits in high-school students using self-report questionnaires. More than 17% of the 613 students engaged in at least one type of NSSI behavior. Compared to male students, female students engaged more often in cutting and less in head banging. All NSSI behaviors were significantly related to Negative and Positive Urgency, that is, the tendency to act impulsive in the presence of negative/positive affect. Interactions between different UPPS-P impulsivity dimensions did not increase the percentage of explained variance in the different NSSI behaviors. Furthermore, severe cutting was negatively related to Lack of Premeditation. Different NSSI functions showed differential relationships with the five UPPS-P impulsivity dimensions.

Abstract:
In this article, I make an empirical contribution to the scholarship on education in urban settings that are affected by militarized policing and illicit drug markets. I offer insights into the role education played in the Pacifying Police Units (UPPs), a pacification project in Rio de Janeiro favelas. Rio State authorities began to install UPPs in 2008 in an effort to regain control over favelas dominated by drug-trafficking groups and marked by high levels of violence. In this paper, which is based on an ethnographic case study I conducted between 2008 and 2015, I discuss the UPPs' struggle to gain the allegiance of favela residents. I focus in particular on police involvement in public primary schools and nonformal education geared toward young children living in the favelas that were part of the UPP project. Looking at one primary question—How does pacification influence education and what does this mean for local perceptions of police?—I reveal how the UPPs brought on the further militarization of education in Rio's favelas and show how paradoxical police practices in the urban margins may actually perpetuate the violence they are intended to combat.

Abstract:
The article proposes a shortened German version of the UPPS impulsive behavior scales. In Study 1, 149 high-school students completed the UPPS questionnaire, a Big-Five questionnaire, additional established self-report scales to measure conscientiousness and impulsivity, as well as tests of working memory capacity, reasoning, and clerical speed. Measurement models were applied to the full translated UPPS scales using confirmatory factor analysis. A satisfactory measurement model could be established only by removing many of the initial items. The remaining items correlated as expected with other self-report and ability measures: Substantial correlations with impulsivity and conscientiousness contrasted with zero correlations with working memory and reasoning ability. The association between impulsivity factors and perceptual speed was primarily a result of the number of solved items rather than the number of mistakes in the speed tasks. In Study 2 the reduced item set from Study 1 was administered to 246 participants to replicate the model. The fit of this model supports the construct validity of the final item set. The generally low correlations of the UPPS with cognitive variables questions interpretations of self-reported impulsivity that are overly focused on cognition. More appropriate cognitive criteria for impulsivity constructs should be established.

Abstract:

Objectives. Deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS) is a recognized therapy that improves motor symptoms in advanced Parkinson’s disease (PD). However, little is known about its impact on personality. To address this topic, we have assessed personality traits before and after STN-DBS in PD patients.Methods. Forty patients with advanced PD were assessed with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI): the Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking impulsive behaviour scale (UPPS), and the Neuroticism and Lie subscales of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ-N, EPQ-L) before surgery and after three months of STN-DBS. Collateral information obtained from the UPPS was also reported.Results. Despite improvement in motor function and reduction in dopaminergic dosage patients reported lower score on the TCI Persistence and Self-Transcendence scales, after three months of STN-DBS, compared to baseline (P=0.006;P=0.024). Relatives reported significantly increased scores on the UPPS Lack of Premeditation scale at follow-up (P=0.027).Conclusion. STN-DBS in PD patients is associated with personality changes in the direction of increased impulsivity.

Abstract Background Conflicting data regarding the efficacy of antidepressants of different mechanism of action on unexplained painful physical symptoms (UPPS) in depression have been published so far. Objective The aim of this study was to compare the impact of escitalopram (ESC), nortriptyline (NOR), and venlafaxine (VEN) on UPPS in patients with major depression. Materials and methods Sixty patients, participants in the GENDEP study, with a diagnosis of depression according to the ICD-10 criteria were randomly assigned to treatment with ESC (10–30 mg, mean dose 15.2, standard deviation [SD]±9.2) or NOR (50–150 mg, mean dose 106.2, SD±8.2). Additionally, 30 patients who were treated with VEN (75–225 mg, mean dose 181.3, SD±8.8) were included. Before inclusion (day 0) and throughout the study (days 14, 28, 42, 56), the severity of pain was monitored using the visual analog scale. Results The patients treated with ESC, NOR, and VEN did not differ in the intensity of pain at days 0, 14, 28, 42, and 56. Conclusion Our results do not support the hypothesis suggesting the superiority of VEN over ESC and NOR in the management of UPPS in major depression.

ObjectiveTurkish version of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale was previously validated in a sample of psychiatric inpatients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate psychometric properties of the sensation seeking subscale of this scale in a sample of inpatients with alcohol use disorder.MethodParticipants (n = 190) were evaluated with the sensation seeking subscale of UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale.ResultsSensation seeking subscale had two factors, which together accounted for 63.80% of total variance. As similar with original subscale internal consistency for the sensation seeking (coefficient α=0.859), factor 1 (α=0.862) and factor 2 (α=0.755) examined by Cronbach's alpa, were high. Factor 1 (r = 0.894) and factor 2 (r = 0.863) were highly correlated with total score, whereas moderately correlated (r = 0.544) with each other. Test-retest correlation for sensation seeking (n = 120) was mild (r = 0.460). Test-retest correlation for factor 1 was moderate (r = 0.518) and for factor 2 was mild (r = 0.431).ConclusionThese findings support the Turkish versions of the sensation seeking subscale of the UPPS has good psychometric properties among inpatients with alcohol use disorder.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Abstract:
Risk-taking is part of the multidimensional nature of impulsivity, consisting of an active engagement in behaviors or choices with potentially undesirable results, with probability as the cost for an expected reward. In order to understand the neurophysiological activity during risky behavior and its relationship with other dimensions of impulsivity, we have acquired event-related-potential (ERP) data and self-reported impulsivity scores from 17 non-clinical volunteers. They underwent high-resolution electroencephalography (HR-EEG) combined with an adapted version of the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), and completed the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS-10) and the Urgency, Premeditation, Perseverance, Sensation Seeking, Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS). The ERP components were sensitive to valence (FRN, P300) and risk/reward magnitude (SPN, RewP). Our main finding evidenced a positive correlation between the amplitude of the P300 component following positive feedback and both the global UPPS score and the (lack of) perseverance UPPS subscale, significant for several adjacent electrodes. This finding might suggest an adaptive form of impulsive behavior, which could be associated to the reduction on the difference of the P300 amplitude following negative and positive feedback. However, further investigation with both larger clinical and non-clinical samples is required.

Abstract:
Undecaprenyl pyrophosphate (UPP) is an important carrier of the oligosaccharide component in peptidoglycan synthesis. Inhibition of UPP synthase (UPPS) may be an effective strategy in combating the pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii, which has evolved to be multidrug-resistant. Here, A. baumannii UPPS (AbUPPS) was cloned, expressed, purified and crystallized, and its structure was determined by X-ray diffraction. Each chain of the dimeric protein folds into a central β-sheet with several surrounding α-helices, including one at the C-terminus. In the active site, two molecules of citrate interact with the side chains of the catalytic aspartate and serine. These observations may provide a structural basis for inhibitor design against AbUPPS.

Abstract:
AbstractThe article in question uses as a theoretical substrate the concepts of the political philosophy of Giorgio Agamben with the objective to realize a critical analysis of the community police programs of states of Rio de Janeiro and Paraná – the “Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora” (UPPs) and the “Unidades Paraná Seguro” (UPSs). The realities of this places are distinct, as well the express purposes of the programs. In Paraná, the main purpose is combat drug trafficking and reduce homicide rates; while in Rio de Janeiro, it is the reconquer of the state monopoly of the force in the communities. However, there is a point of convergence: the philosophy of community policing. The article points out the contradictions of such policing and its effects on the population of occupied localities. Contradictions and effects were possible to relate the theory in question, having as guide the definition of state of exception, an emptiness of law, in which the suspension of the norm becomes the rule. The problematization is directed at hypothesis that the UPPs and UPSs form a camp in the communities where the police circulate between violence and right, and the life becomes bare. As a result, the present research could verify that both UPPs and UPSs tend to actualize the agambenean camp, forming zones of exception in which the life is compared to homo sacer. These projects, which uses the discourses of democracy and community policing, are a biopolitical techniques of control and governance of life and death.

Although impulsivity has been consistently linked to perpetration of sexual aggression, results lack clarity because they do not account for the substantial heterogeneity associated with the construct. The UPPS-P model (Lynam, Smith, Whiteside, & Cyders, 2006), which was proposed to clarify the multidimensional nature of impulsivity, has yet to be applied to sexual aggression. We measured UPPS-P Impulsivity in a sample of male college students who also self-reported on perpetration of sexual aggression. As predicted, impulsivity distinguished perpetrators from nonperpetrators. Perpetrators scored higher than nonperpetrators on Negative Urgency, Positive Urgency, and lack of Premeditation. Results suggest that the impulsivity traits most relevant to sexual aggression are the tendency to act impulsively when experiencing intense emotions (Positive and Negative Urgency) and lack of forethought and planning (lack of Premeditation).

Abstract:
Impulsivity occupies a prominent place in psychopathology, yet the precise nature of its implication in mental disorders is still poorly understood. This is partly due to inconsistencies among existing conceptualizations and measurements of impulsivity. In an attempt to overcome these inconsistencies, S. P. Whiteside and D. R. Lynam (2001) developed the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale, which distinguishes four facets of impulsivity: urgency, lack of premeditation, lack of perseverance, and sensation seeking. The present study examined the psychometric properties of a German adaptation of the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale by administering it to a sample of psychology students. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the responses of 310 native German speaking participants suggested a four-factor solution similar to that found in the original study. Results indicated that these four subscales possess very good internal consistency.

This article analyzes a concrete policy in the framework of Brazilian Public Security: the Pacifying Police Units (UPPs). It describes this policy and justifies, through an ethnographic case study, how the so-called “pacification of the favelas” articulates a logic of neoliberal urbanism and police infrastructure, understanding the residents of the favelas as potential consumers of their services. The article contextualizes the UPPs model as a paradigmatic case of public security in Latin America in which the discourse of violence/pacification is the main catalyst for private investments. More specifically, the article demonstrates how private companies resort to proximity conflicts mediation as a way of avoiding the judicialization of conflicts with the residents after the “Pacification”. With this case, we expect to illustrate the patrimonialism and clientelism that shapes the Brazilian State and its ambiguous relationships between private and public interests.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The UPPS-P seems to be a promising instrument for measuring different domains of impulsivity in forensic psychiatric patients. Validation studies of the instrument however, have been conducted only in student groups. In this validation study, three groups completed the Dutch UPPS-P: healthy student ( N = 94) and community ( N = 134) samples and a forensic psychiatric sample ( N = 73). The five-factor structure reported previously could only be substantiated in a confirmatory factor analysis over the combined groups but not in the subsamples. Subgroup sample sizes might be too small to allow such complex analyses. Internal consistency, as assessed by Cronbach’s alpha, was high on most subscale and sample combinations. In explaining aggression, especially the initial subscale negative urgency (NU) was related to elevated scores on self-reported aggression in the healthy samples (student and community). The current study is the second study that found a relationship between self-reported NU and aggression highlighting the importance of addressing this behavioural domain in aggression management therapy.

ABSTRACT The prenyltransferase undecaprenyl pyrophosphate synthetase (di-trans,poly-cis-decaprenylcistransferase; EC2.5.1.31 ) was purified from the soluble fraction of Escherichia coli by TSK-DEAE, ceramic hydroxyapatite, TSK-ether, Superdex 200, and heparin-Actigel chromatography. The protein was labeled with the photolabile analogue of the farnesyl pyrophosphate analogue (E,E)-[1-3H]-(2-diazo-3-trifluoropropionyloxy)geranyl diphos-phate and was detected on a sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel as a protein with an apparent molecular mass of 29 kDa. This protein band was cut out from the gel, trypsin digested, and subjected to matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometric analysis. Comparison of the experimental data with computer-simulated trypsin digest data for all E. coliproteins yielded a single match with a protein of unassigned function (SWISS-PROT Q47675 ; YAES_ECOLI). Sequences with strong similarity indicative of homology to this protein were identified in 25 bacterial species, in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and inCaenorhabditis elegans. The homologous genes (uppS) were cloned from E. coli,Haemophilus influenzae, and Streptococcus pneumoniae, expressed in E. coli as amino-terminal His-tagged fusion proteins, and purified over a Ni2+ affinity column. An untagged version of the E. coli uppS gene was also cloned and expressed, and the protein purified in two chromatographic steps. We were able to detect Upp synthetase activity for all purified enzymes. Further, biochemical characterization revealed no differences between the recombinant untagged E. coli Upp synthetase and the three His-tagged fusion proteins. All enzymes were absolutely Triton X-100 and MgCl2 dependent. With the use of a regulatable gene disruption system, we demonstrated that uppS is essential for growth in S. pneumoniae R6.

Abstract:
TheEscherichia coliundecaprayl-pyrophosphate synthase (UPPs) structure has been solved using the single wavelength anomalous diffraction method. The putative substrate-binding site is located near the end of the βA-strand with Asp-26 playing a critical catalytic role. In both subunits, an elongated hydrophobic tunnel is found, surrounded by four β-strands (βA-βB-βD-βC) and two helices (α2 and α3) and lined at the bottom with large residues Ile-62, Leu-137, Val-105, and His-103. The product distributions formed by the use of the I62A, V105A, and H103A mutants are similar to those observed for wild-type UPPs. Catalysis by the L137A UPPs, on the other hand, results in predominantly the formation of the C70polymer rather than the C55polymer. Ala-69 and Ala-143 are located near the top of the tunnel. In contrast to the A143V reaction, the C30intermediate is formed to a greater extent and is longer lived in the process catalyzed by the A69L mutant. These findings suggest that the small side chain of Ala-69 is required for rapid elongation to the C55product, whereas the large hydrophobic side chain of Leu-137 is required to limit the elongation to the C55product. The roles of residues located on a flexible loop were investigated. The S71A, N74A, or R77A mutants displayed 25–200-fold decrease inkcatvalues. W75A showed an 8-fold increase of the FPPKmvalue, and 22–33-fold increases in the IPPKmvalues were observed for E81A and S71A. The loop may function to bridge the interaction of IPP with FPP, needed to initiate the condensation reaction and serve as a hinge to control the substrate binding and product release.

Abstract:
In the underwater passive positioning systems (UPPS), it involves a key technology of multi-user communication that the beacons synchronously send positioning messages to the targets. Interferences from other users, referred to multi-access interferences (MAIs), can induce significant bit errors for the desired user. In this paper, we designed an underwater acoustic Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system using the coded cyclic shift key (CCSK) modulation, and proposed a hybrid MAI cancellation scheme based on cyclic shift inverse matrix transform (CSIMT) and recursive least square (RLS) in the CDMA system. The hybrid scheme can suppress MAI better than RLS or CSIMT, and meets the requirements of strong stability to support reliable transmission for UPPS. The CSIMT interference cancellation performs well under the far-near effects, which doesn’t depend on the accuracy of the estimation of transmitted data, and the strong MAI can be reduced by transformation of the zero-forcing correlation values using m sequence cyclic shift inverse matrix. The RLS interference cancellation is used to mitigate MAI form the detected users with comparable power, by using the estimated the channel impulse response between the receiver and the detected users, and the regenerated signal of detected users form decoder output, which allows of strong error-correcting codes, and it’s robust in an asynchronous environment. The theoretical analysis and experimental result show that the hybrid MAI cancellation scheme can effectively suppress MAI better. The shallow water sea trial was carried out near Dalian Tiger Beach Ocean Park in China, at a distance of about 5 km, the data rates of 100bps, where three users could communicate asynchronously with low failure ratio and can match the UPPS application.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Introduction: It has been reported that certain children are more at risk of sexual abuse: these risks factors are defined as individual, familial, social and institutional factors. Although; data from clinical risks in the literature is limited. In this study, we aimed to determine the clinical risk factors of sexual abuse. Methods: 22 female and 12 male, sexual abused children and 34 healthy volunteer children were involved in this study. Patients and volunteers were assessed with the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI), Reading Mind from Eyes Test (RMET) and the UPPS impulsive behavior scale. Results: There were no significant differences in maternal attachment scores in either group but the paternal attachment scores were statistically significantly lower in the study group. The RMET scores were statistically significantly lower in the study group than in the control group. The UPPS impulsive behavior scale unpersistence subscores were statistically significantly higher in the study group than in the control group. Conclusion: Sexual abuse is known as the most difficult type of trauma to treat and preventing the risk of identification is of the most importance. Further studies with a large sample are needed to determine the clinical risk factors of sexual abuse.

Abstract:
Prospective memory refers to the ability to plan and execute future intentions. A burgeoning body of research indicates that a significant proportion of the variability in prospective memory performance can be accounted for by personality traits, with two recent studies revealing that the various dimensions of impulsivity measured by the Barratt Impulsivity Scale–11 (BIS–11) are related to prospective memory failures. The present study was conducted to examine which dimensions of impulsivity indexed by the BIS–11 and UPPS–P relate to prospective memory failures and which dimensions of impulsivity contribute unique variance in the prediction of prospective memory failures. A large sample ( N = 662) of students completed the BIS–11, UPPS–P, Prospective Memory Questionnaire and a habitual prospective memory test. Consistent correlations between six of the seven measures of impulsivity and prospective memory failures were found. Regression analyses further revealed that lack of perseverance, emotional urgency and attentional impulsivity were reliable and unique predictors of prospective memory failures. Thus, difficulty remaining focused on tasks (especially long, boring or difficult tasks); lack of forethought, planning and distaste for challenging tasks; and tendencies to behave impulsively under conditions of strong affect relate most strongly to prospective memory failures. Abstract:
IntroductionIn empirical literature, impulsivity is identified as a core feature of gambling addiction. Furthermore, pathological gamblers are prone to have a poor self-esteem. Previous researches studied the link between impulsivity and self-esteem bringing contrasting results. However, relationships between such constructs among pathological gamblers have not been investigated.ObjectivesWe sought to explore the associations among pathological gambling, self-esteem and different facets of impulsivity comparing a clinical sample of pathological gamblers with community participants.AimsTo highlight patterns of associations between self-esteem and impulsiveness in pathological gambling.MethodsA sample of pathological gamblers and a sample of healthy men, were administered the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), the UPPS Impulsive Behavior Scale (UPPS) and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES).ResultsAs expected, levels of impulsivity were significantly higher in the clinical sample while levels of self-esteem were significantly lower. A significant and negative correlation between impulsivity and self-esteem was found among pathological gamblers. Different patterns of associations were found between self-esteem and dimensions of impulsivity.ConclusionsCoherently with others results, our study confirmed that pathological gamblers showed high impulsivity and low self-esteem. The peculiars patterns of associations between impulsivity and self-esteem could be informative to tailor treatment programs for pathological gamblers.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.
