Abstract:
Syftet med studien är att kartlägga och utvärdera IT-stödet inom institutioner tillhörande den samhällsvetenskapliga fakulteten vid Uppsala universitet. En fallstudie har genomförts som resulterat i en verksamhetsdiagnos som utgör en summativ utvärdering av IT-stödet för grundutbildningen. I denna utvärdering beskrivs problem och styrkor med IT stödet ur ett verksamhetsperspektiv. Studien visar att IT-stödet (e-infrastrukturen) på lokal nivå inom Uppsala universitet är komplex, problematisk och att den har en skiftande kvalitet. Undersökta institutioner har olika behov och krav på IT-stöd. Det finns också skillnader i de olika verksamheternas arbetsmetoder, uppbyggnad av kurser, budgetering och administrativa sysslor, vilket gör att vissa institutioner har mer problem med IT stödet än andra. Resultatet och de rekommendationer som ges i uppsatsen kan ses som en input i den strategiska planeringen för IT-stödet vid Uppsala universitet. Ur ett generellt perspektiv visar den djupa fallstudien på problem som finns i många organisationer när det gäller e-infrastrukturens och verksamhetens ömsesidiga anpassning till varandra. Studien visar på ett detaljerat sätt hur generella problem med e-infrastrukturer inom organisationer som beskrivs i litteraturen i form av att systemen är isolerade öar, redundans och dubbelinmatning av information leder till problem i verksamheten.
The purpose of this study is to describe and review the IT systems that are currently in use within the Faculty of Social Sciences at Uppsala University. A case study has been conducted resulting in an operation diagnosis of the current situation and a summative evaluation of the IT systems available to undergraduate studies within the faculties. In this evaluation the strengths and weaknesses of the IT support are assessed in relation to the business processes of the faculties. The case study shows that e-infrastructure at a local level within Uppsala University is complex, problematical and of varying quality. The institutions investigated have differing needs and demands of IT-support. Work methods vary from institution to institution particularly in the structure, budgeting and administration of courses and this variation means that some institutions manage their IT-support better than others. The results and recommendations presented in this study can be seen as a contribution to the strategic planning of IT-support in the university. From a wider perspective the detailed case study illuminates problems that exist in many organizations where e-infrastructure and administration need constantly to adapt to each other. The study confirms in a detailed manner that organizations that have segregated e-infrastructure systems, often described in literature as isolated islands, are prone to both redundant and duplicate inputting of information resulting in administrative problems in the running of the organization.

Abstract:
The scope of this master thesis is the scientific publishing at Uppsala University's Faculty of Arts. The aim of the thesis is to investigate publication patterns and publishing strategies. To investigate how the publication patterns of the faculty is structured and what priorities and considerations the researchers have regarding scientific publishing.  Furthermore, the aim is to compare these publishing strategies and publication patterns to incentives and selection principles of the bibliometric indicators in the performance based research funding systems on the national and local scale. The thesis is based on the theories of disciplinary differences developed by Richard Whitley and Tony Becher and Paul R. Trowler. These theories suggest a framework based on organizational and sociological perspectives, that offers ways to explain differences in publication patterns between different scientific fields. The study is based on two empirical studies of the faculty. A survey of the researchers publication patterns has been conducted, and publications that are registered in the local publication database has been analyzed. Results from the study show that scientific journal articles, book chapters and monographs, are the most important publishing forms and occur at all departments at the faculty. Many respondents remarked that publication patterns are changing toward more international publishing and increased article publishing in scientific journals, which corresponds with the analysis of the actual publications. Overall, the respondents rank their knowledge of the bibliometric indicators in the lower scale, while the respondents' publication strategies are in fact consistent with the incentives in the allocation models. The selection principle of the local allocation model captures a larger share of the faculty’s publications in comparison to the national allocation model. However, results from the survey shows that there are significant differences at an institutional level, in how the local bibliometric quality indicator assess the respondents' most central and most respected publishing channels. The publishing channels of the Department of Literature have the lowest correlation and the highest correlations are found among respondents from the Department of Philosophy. The study also finds a correlation between the quality indicators’ assessment of the departments’ central publishing channels and the assessment of the departments' actual publications.
