One of the most significant and serious issues is the contamination of groundwater by U following mining activities. The processes of uranium release and subsequent transport in groundwater is closely tied to its aqueous chemistry i.e. aqueous speciation, adsorption to mineral surfaces and dissolved organic carbon (DOM). Abstract:
The behavior of U in near surface sedimentary environments has changed throughout geologic time. There is a marked shift in U (IV) mineral stability and deposit style at approximately 2200 Ma due to changes in the concentration of O in the atmosphere. For example, prior to 2200 Ma, fluvial U deposits could form and U(IV) were stable in surface and near-surface environments. In modern, anthropogenic sedimentary systems such as U tailings, U (IV) minerals are not stable and readily oxidize to U (VI) minerals. In addition, U is much more mobile in modern sediments relative sediments that were

Abstract:
Radionuclide extraction, processing and storage have resulted in a legacy of radionuclide-contaminated groundwater aquifers worldwide. An emerging remediation technology for such sites is the in situ immobilisation of radionuclides via biostimulation of dissimilatory metal reducing bacteria. While this approach has been successfully demonstrated in experimental studies, advances in understanding and optimization of the technique are needed. Mass transfer processes in heterogeneous and structured porous media may significantly affect the geochemical and microbial processes taking place in conta

Abstract:
With the ever-diminishing reserves of fossil fuels, it is inevitable that nuclear power will represent a major source for global energy production in the not too distant future. The principal nuclear fuel, uranium, interacts with numerous other elements from all over the Periodic Table during its life in the nuclear energy cycle. A more profound appreciation of the chemical behaviour of uranium and its compounds represents a significant and important link in the chain towards the development of better nuclear fuel materials and cleaner long-term waste treatment solutions. However, the f-block

Abstract:
The broad objective of research described in this thesis was the experimental determination of the solid / liquid transition in both stoichiometric and hyperstoichiometric uranium dioxide. Experimental information in this field constitutes a necessary reference for the analysis of hypothetical nuclear reactor accidents and, in particular, for the formulation of an equation of state (EOS) for uranium dioxide. A review of previous research on the same topic revealed that only few and uncertain experimental data were available prior to this work, obtained with conventional thermal analysis techni
