<em>Article will potentially discuss the need to redefine the concept and boundaries of peri-urban areas in the context of urban development and planning. Peri-urban areas are transitional zones located on the edges of urban areas, and they often face unique challenges related to infrastructure, land use, and governance. As urban areas continue to expand and evolve, redefining the concept of peri-urban areas may be necessary to better understand and address the complex issues facing these regions. The article may also discuss potential approaches or strategies for redefining peri-urban areas a

In Beijing, urban agriculture (UA) experienced a corkscrew development with its role changing in decades: It has evolved from the purely production mode to multi-functional urban agriculture, fulfilling both social and ecological demands. At present, the practice of UA as well as the number of rural to urban migrants is growing rapidly in peri-urban Beijing. Through Multi-stakeholder Process for Action planning and Policy Design (MPAP) methodology and four in-depth case studies, we can see that UA activities are playing very important roles in reshaping peri-urban Beijing. In developing countries, cities are rapidly expanding, and urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA) has an important role in feeding a growing urban population. However, UPA carries risks of zoonotic disease transmission. This study aims to understand the characteristics of UPA in Kampala, Uganda and the zoonotic risks to humans. Following a general overview of the subject in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 describes the determination of urban, peri-urban and rural areas of the Kampala economic zone and socio-economical characteristics of the peri-urban interface compared with the urban and rural counter p

Acoustic recording has recently been identified as an effective tool for monitoring biodiversity and ecosystem health. This study used a novel approach to visually and statistically model the sounds produced within an ecosystem across space and time to identify hot spots and hot moments of biodiversity activity. It was demonstrated that biodiversity can be successfully measured through an integrated approach of ecoacoustic monitoring and highlights the potential to inform future ecological urban design decisions and conservation planning strategies.

This research emphasises that quality of our lives is dependent on quality of our environment, which in turn is dependent on the quality of land use as a result of urban planning. In the process of urbanisation, the subsurface environment namely the presence or absence of groundwater is a key factor. This thesis examines role of groundwater in urban development and planning from the point of view of sustainability of the in-situ resource in the long run as an important source to meeting increasing water requirements of urban agglomeration.
