Abstract:
In the current era of such a complex and diverse, linear thinking has no longer a reasonable explanation of complex phenomena in various fields, thus the non-linear thinking is coming to the fore. While the city is a complex nonlinear system, in such a digital information age characterized by technology, non-linear thinking must replace the original simple linear thinking in urban planning and design process. The purpose of this study is to analyze new urban planning visions by using the core ideas of the nonlinear scientific theory. The article mainly analyzes the nonlinear theory and the relations between it and urban planning, including the nonlinear theory of chaos theory, fractal theory, the inherent randomness theory, thus forming a new concept of urban planning and design.

Abstract:
The city is a complex living organism mostly affected by decisions taken whether they are political, organizational, or design decisions. Such decisions vary in scale starting with planning, urban design, and architectural scales. Urban design has been commonly agreed to occupy a hypothetical intersection between planning and architecture. It emerged to bridge the disciplinary gap between architecture and planning. Since 1960s urban design literature attempted to define what good urban design and good city form is, and the process to achieve it; yet in practice the end product doesn’t always achieve high quality in terms of urban design initial objectives. Over the last decades, the gap between disciplinary dreams in theory and real outcomes translated as urban design product of different practices has been growing in the field of urban planning and urban design. Since the urban design product does not meet its expected objectives in theory then something must be wrong with it, and a thorough investigation must come in order to perceive such gap. The Research aims to answer two main questions regarding urban design through examining the Urban Design Process; the first is whether the urban design process is capable to bridge the multidisciplinary gap? And the second question is with the little knowledge and lack of success criteria for the urban design process; how can the success of urban design be measured?

Abstract:
Jakarta’s dense population has caused a disorder in the urban system by negatively impacting its streams. Therefore, this research aims to find out the urban district design criterias with rainwater harvesting system and how to implement them in residential areas of Kebon Melati, Tanah Abang. Data collecting techniques used in this research include literature studies, field observation, and interviews. The proposed solution to Jakarta’s rainwater problems is to design a district which incorporates the four potential urban design theory applications into it. The first theory is about land use related to storage and drainage system. The second theory is about vehicle circulation and pedestrian paths related to roadblock gaps and permeable materials. The third theory is about building mass and shape related to catchment area, conveyance, and green roof. The last theory is about open spaces related to water retention basins. The goal of this urban district design is to develop and decrease the speed of rainwater flow in Kebon Melati.

Abstract:
Benefiting from the rapid development of global economy, a growing number of post-industry products spring up. In comparison to the population in the suburb, the urban population presents a significantly increasing tendency. Undoubtedly, the efficient lifestyle, the convenient way of traveling and the industrial products have caused irresistible threat and damage to the nature. The soil desertification, saline-alkali land, forest degradation and else environmental issues occur as an obvious warning from the nature to us. Therefore, it is an imminent research subject at the moment to seek for symbiotic and harmonious relationship between the human and the nature. The urban landscape is a type of highly artificial design. In it, the urban corridor develops to steer the development of the overall urban landscape pattern. In the process of urban corridor design, the landscape ecological theory is essential in practical application. Spirited by ecological design, the natural ecology landscape is added on the basis of artificial restoration. This paper profoundly studied the sustainable development of the urban landscape setup, thus providing healthier and livelier design on the green ecological corridor for the urban dwellers.

Abstract:
Urban and architectural theorist Nikos Salingaros, a professor of mathematics at Texas University, San Antonio is affiliated with departments of urbanism in several countries and has made a significant contribution to the understanding of urban planning on a human scale. His important books on various issues in urban and architectural theory are well-known to all members of the profession and academy, especially those seeking for the application of scientific principles in urbanism. Nikos Salingaros has contributed significantly to the New Athens Charter (2003) – an important yet largely neglected document providing timely guidelines for reshaping present mainstream urbanism that still remains under the spell of urban ideology coined by Le Corbusier, Giedion and legions of their followers. A critic of Corbusian doctrines as well as more recent tendencies of urbanism based on stale legacy of Modernism, Nikos Salingaros offers a different approach to the interpretation of contemporary cities and complexity of their functions. He is among those scholars and practitioners who firmly support the principles of urban design promoted by members of the movement known as New Urbanism. Our talk with Nikos Salingaros revolved around the issues of the need to reconsider and reshape our present attitudes prevailing in urbanism.

The paper presents a method to operationalize Jan Gehl’s questions for public space into metrics to map Russian monotowns’ urban life in 2017. With the use of social media data, it becomes possible to scale Gehl’s approach from the survey of small urban areas to the analysis of entire cities while maintaining the human scale’s resolution. When underperforming public spaces are detected, we propose a matrix for urban design interventions using Jane Jacobs’ typologies for good city life. Furthermore, this method could be deployed to improve the conditions of public spaces in Russian monotowns through a series of architectural briefs for design competitions and urban design guidelines for local administrations.

Abstract:
The theory of urban design has been adopted for years, but only a few researchers have extended their studies discussing value from the perspective of urban design review. This paper aims to understand the items of urban design review and to establish the value evaluating system of urban design review to catch the trend in controlling urban environmental quality. According to the difference of each urban’s stage, this study separates Taiwanese cities as metropolitan, regional, and local one, and compares six different city’s relative contents and seven different review items. From overview of the urban design evaluation system developing, the framework of the value evaluation system for urban design review considers 15 factors, classified into five categories: the richness of architectural patterns, diversity of ecological landscapes, accessibility of transportation, livability of society and culture, and sustainability of economy and industry. Thus some problems regarding urban design should be resolved, improve the completion of system planning by ecological methods, enable the implementation of a variety of public participation project, beautiful, and healthy city in the future.

Abstract:
Previous research has established the value of regarding cities as complex systems, and as systems which will evolve over time. The research reported in this paper concerns the development of an approach to urban design and management which recognises the complexities of change resulting from design-led urban interventions. The research commenced with a study of urban design and urban management processes, and the manner in which they have been studied in an academic context. The system aims to guide the processes of urban design so that it can be implemented within a cyclical process of evaluation and application. The system aids communication across design teams and improves clarity within the design process for the designers themselves. The specific system also aspires to interconnect theory with practice, while supporting designers to be inclusive and holistic. The paper describes a case study where the framework was applied within an academic setting, related to real urban environments in Singapore. It validates the model’s ability to guide students through the design process, give depth to their analysis of urban systems and meaning to their designs. Action research was implemented, to reflect the need for a “practice-changing practice” methodology, that supports a greater understanding of the relationship between theory and practice.

Abstract:
How do different concepts of justice correspond with the principles of diversity in cities introduced by Jane Jacobs? This contribution connects Jane Jacobs’ ideas on the diverse city with Mary Douglas’ Cultural Theory and its concept of clumsy solutions. According to Douglas’ Cultural Theory, every social situation can be described in terms of the four ideal-typical “rationalities”: individualism, egalitarianism, hierarchism, and fatalism. These four rationalities are again linked to different concepts of justice: libertarian, utilitarian, or social justice. Douglas’ Cultural Theory assumes that in every social situation all four of those rationalities emerge in some way and concludes that if a situation is not poly-rational, it is less robust. This opts for imperfect and “clumsy solutions”. It is argued that clumsy solutions, the four rationalities and related concepts fit Jane Jacobs’ claim for more diversity in urban design. This essentially calls for imperfect cities by design, ‘built’ by Jacobs’ generators for diversity. Although this outcome might not be revolutionary in the current debates about urban design, the concept of clumsy solutions provide a foundation for Jane Jacobs’ atheoretical claim for a diverse city. This contributes to new reflections on the urban planning paradigms of Jane Jacobs.

Abstract:
The sheer complexity and unpredictability characterising cities challenges the adequacy of existing disciplinary knowledge and tools in urban design and highlights the necessity to incorporate explicitly the element of change and the dimension of time in the understanding of, and intervention on, the form of cities. To this regard the concept of resilience is a powerful lens through which to understand and engage with a changing world. However, resilience is currently only superficially addressed by urban designers, and an explicit effort to relate elements of urban form to resilience principles is still lacking. This represents a great limit for urban designers, as the physical dimension of cities is the matter they work with in the first place. In this paper, we combine established knowledge in urban morphology and resilience theory. We firstly look at resilience theory and consistently define five proxies of resilience in urban form, namely diversity, redundancy, modularity, connectivity and efficiency. Secondly, we discuss the configuration of, and interdependencies between, several constituent elements of the physical city, as defined in urban morphology and design, in light of the mentioned five proxies. Finally, we conduct this exploration at five scales that are relevant to urban morphology and design: plot, street edge, block, street and sanctuary area / district.

Abstract:
With the proliferation of context-less designs internationally stemming from beliefs around progress, development, growth, and the idea that urban design approaches easily travel and can be replicated, this paper argues that urban design might usefully attend more carefully to the local contexts in which it is practicing. Augmenting traditional proscriptive (critiquing poor practice design) and prescriptive (suggesting best practice design) approaches with new critical thinking on culture, to deliver contextually responsive design that is also culturally sensitive. We argue more must be done to analyse and explore contexts where consensual norms around planning practice are frequently absent, such as places characterised by historically embedded cultural sensitivities; emerging out of conflict; or urban informality. This case is evidenced in an exploration of the discursive construction of ‘Homs Dream,’ a development scenario for the future of the Syrian city. The paper concludes with a challenge for urban design, in both theory and practice, to continue developing new thinking at the (dis)junction between urban form and culture.

Abstract:
Visitor center plays an important role in the normal operation and sustainable development of scenic spots, especially as a portal image of its management. This paper presents resilience theory for visitor centers to identify some common issues in designing visitor centers in China scenic spots, including the lack of function, loss of architectural characteristics, and difficultly in adapting to changes in the number of visitors with periodic variations. The framework of resilience theory was set from four dimensions, namely, resilience and match in the composition of ontology function, the extended function, integration of buildings into the surrounding environment, and alternative construction technologies and materials. This theory was explained and analyzed with the application of the theory in practice in combination with the design of Mount Hua visitor center. Results showed that resilience theory yields good application effect.

Abstract:
The guiding ideology of modern urban planning has changed from space theory to the ecological theory. Urban landscape ecological planning is concerned about “Design with Nature” based on the ecological and the holistic point of view. The philosophy of the aesthetic visual ecology is to achieve the transformation from the traditional “physical planning” to the “ecological planning” in the urban design. The consideration of the aesthetic visual ecology will be a major step in humanizing and re-shaping the urban landscape, which will also serve as a guide in the urbanization of China.

Abstract:
Designing, testing and manufacturing new technologies is a complex process that often requires many redesigns and rethinks. There are multiple criteria a new technological product must meet. Examples include the fact that it must provide a useful function, it must execute that function efficiently and effectively and it must be user friendly. In addition, cost of production and of sale are key considerations. Generally, once the manufacturer is satisfied with the results in all the criteria, the product can be released and sold. This iterative process whereby designs for manufacturing are gradually improved is the standard engineering approach. It is an extremely reliable way to ensure your product satisfies the basic criteria you set for it at the beginning. However, this is where the intellectual effort behind the design process stops. A product is made and, potentially, sells well and follow ups designed, but often little thought is put into unintended side effects of it. Dr Nariaki Nishino, who is an Associate Professor at the Department of Technology Management for Innovation, School of Engineering in The University of Tokyo, explains that new technology often receives little scrutiny of its unplanned effects. 'This is particularly true of modern technologies involving the digitisation of previously analogue products,' he outlines. Over the last 10 years, it has been generally seen as a positive and desirable to digitise as much as possible. Particularly, it has been seen as important to integrate digitised products extensively so that data from one is shared with another, etc. 'Such data sharing and integrated technology can provide many benefits for the user, however, there are side effects and important consequences to the sharing of so much personal data,' confirms Nishino. 'These unintended consequences are known as artefacts of the product and after ignored in the design process.' More broadly, such artefacts of engineering can include a wide range of the negatives of modern life – environmental problems, loneliness, urban decay. Nishino is a key team member of the Research into Artefacts, Centre for Engineering (RACE) division at The University of Tokyo, which was set up to examine how engineering could start considering these artefacts in the design process.

Abstract:
Purpose The contribution is focussed on the question of which logic and which distinctive lines of development have shaped the discourse on urban crime prevention and will probably shape it in the future. Design/methodology/approach Comparing the line of development in thinking about urban crime prevention: starting with the approaches of the rational choice theory and of architectural determinism that were integrated in the practical approach of crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED). Looking on the continuation in the recent past: aspects of social cohesion and disorganization in the neighbourhood – represented by the collective efficacy – were integrated with the traditional lines of argumentation. Continuing to the present, the actor network theory opens up advanced perspectives of the integration and development of urban crime prevention. Findings Comparison of the approaches of the rational choice theory and of architectural determinism. Their combination in the practical approach of CPTED. Integration of these lines of argumentation with aspects of social cohesion and disorganization in the neighbourhood represented by the collective efficacy and the absorption in the concept of second-generation CPTED in the recent past. Opening up for advanced perspectives of the integration and development of urban crime prevention by the actor network theory. Originality/value The process analysis by linking the rational choice theory, the architectural determinism, the collective efficacy theory and the actor network theory to a continuous development represents an innovative perspective on the discourse on urban crime prevention.

Abstract:
Creating the Urban Eden, a course taught jointly by faculty in Landscape Architecture and Horticulture at Cornell University, is a unique two-semester class spanning the academic year from August to May. Students face the task of creating viable, sustainable landscapes both in theory and practice. The success and sustainability of any planting design is ultimately dependent upon knowledgeable site assessment and analysis, appropriate plant selection, and clear communication of design intentions. This class teaches all aspects of landscape establishment, including detailed site assessment, woody plant identification, choice of appropriate plants, planting design, soil remediation, transplanting, and early maintenance in human-impacted landscapes. In addition to designing for a specific site, students learn about written specifications for technical planting and graphic details to communicate and implement design proposals. Every year on the Cornell University campus, the students in this class implement, in a hands-on manner, all aspects of landscape establishment that they have learned by creating new landscapes that serve to integrate theory, principles, practice, and provide a demonstration of fundamentals taught in the class.

Abstract:
The information entropy theory involves such important concepts as the amount of information and information entropy, and it is widely applied in educational field. At present, teaching contents of Urban Planning are dull, and teaching methods and means are single. For such characteristics, information entropy theory and MP5 technology were introduced in multimedia teaching platform design. The new teaching platform was designed from 4 aspects: video module, audio module, network module and electronic module. Since information entropy theory can make information quantified, the teaching contents can be visualized, and teaching interestingness can improve. Meanwhile, because MP5 has such characteristics as diversified technological functions and use convenience, it can enhance multimedia teaching effect. The new teaching platform can let the teaching contents more vivid and visual, motivate students’ learning initiative and promote teaching quality.
