Ghertner, D. Asher, and Robert W. Lake, eds. Land Fictions. Cornell University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.7591/cornell/9781501753732.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book explores the common storylines, narratives, and tales of social betterment that justify and enact land as commodity. It interrogates global patterns of property formation, the dispossessions property markets enact, and the popular movements to halt the growing waves of evictions and land grabs. This collection brings together original research on urban, rural, and peri-urban India; rapidly urbanizing China and Southeast Asia; resource expropriation in Africa and Latin America; and the neoliberal urban landscapes of North America and Europe. Through a variety of perspectives, the book finds resonances between local stories of land's fictional powers and global visions of landed property's imagined power to automatically create value and advance national development. The book unpacks the dynamics of land commodification across a broad range of political, spatial, and temporal settings, exposing its simultaneously contingent and collective nature. It advances understanding of the politics of land while also contributing to current debates on the intersections of local and global, urban and rural, and general and particular.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 details how the rapid expansion of private, Catholic schooling in the 1870s and 1880s introduced unforeseen competition that transformed urban education. Newly constructed Catholic parochial schools in cities like Pittsburgh siphoned tens of thousands of Catholic students away from urban public schools. As a result, conflicts over growing parochial school attendance seemed ensured. Public officials initially responded by attempting to adapt to their new competitors. In hopes of attracting Catholic immigrants, for example, school boards in cities such as Cleveland and Chicago adopted foreign-language instruction, or attempted to work out various schemes to fund Catholic schools out of the public treasury. These measures met with varying degrees of success but failed to halt what was becoming a clear, national trend: sharp lines demarcating public and private schools, in often fierce competition with one another in American cities.

Abstract:
This chapter examines Frederick D. Jones's murals that form a central part of the media ministry of the First Church of Deliverance (FCOD). FCOD's charismatic founder Clarence Henry Cobbs was the forerunner of Billy Graham, Pat Robertson, and other notable megachurch televangelists of the last two decades. In 1934 he became one of the first African American church leaders to broadcast his sermons on the radio and in 1953 the very first to do so on television. In 1939 he commissioned the black architect Walter T. Bailey to renovate FCOD, a converted hat factory, and hired Jones to paint a set of murals that emphasized the inclusive and progressive aspect of his urban church. In 1946 Jones painted Neighborhood People Flocking to the Lord in the foyer of FCOD. Jones meticulously represents key themes of the FCOD ministry, such as class diversity and inclusivity, and specific aspects of the Spiritualist service and the church's interior. This chapter considers FCOD's founding, architecture, and gospel music before discussing Jones's murals.

Abstract:
Arias, Enrique Desmond, and Thomas Grisaffi, eds. Cocaine. Duke University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478021957.

Full text
Abstract:
The contributors to Cocaine analyze the contemporary production, transit, and consumption of cocaine throughout the Americas and the illicit economy's entanglement with local communities. Based on in-depth interviews and archival research, these essays examine how government agents, acting both within and outside the law, and criminal actors seek to manage the flow of illicit drugs to both maintain order and earn profits. Whether discussing the moral economy of coca cultivation in Bolivia, criminal organizations and drug traffickers in Mexico, or the routes cocaine takes as it travels into and through Guatemala, the contributors demonstrate how entire ways of life are built around cocaine commodification. They consider how the authority of state actors is coupled with the self-regulating practices of drug producers, traffickers, and dealers, complicating notions of governance and of the relationships between economic and moral economies. The collection also outlines a more progressive drug policy that acknowledges the important role drugs play in the lives of those at the urban and rural margins. Contributors.
