Overby, Heather A. "Scan & Scansion: An Urban Residency for Poets & Artists Working in Collaboration." VCU Scholars Compass, 2018. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5374.

Abstract:
Scansion is the act of discerning a poem’s meter and measure to discover its overall meaning. To achieve beauty in poetry, just as in interior design, content must continually be in conversation with form. And, just as a building must be scaled against the human figure to determine its final shape, a poem is scaled against human breath, the breadth of our sounds. Scan & Scansion is a Richmond-based residency with a six-month term providing a work, living and exhibition space to poets and artists who wish to work collaboratively across disciplines. As the program is essentially about applied poetics and process, it presents the perfect moment to place these two modes of measurement alongside one another, exploring how poetics may be used as a design driver--how a space might be both architectural and lyrical, and, ultimately, how poetry and the arts, or the sound and the image, may enrich each other.

The privately owned public interior, defined here as an enclosed urban space owned by a private entity, has been a recurrent character of many 20th century liberal cities. It has today found an epitome in the mega-structural urban enclaves of the developing world. The thesis seeks to challenge the idea of future within these forms. Developed as technologically deterministic, aesthetic totalities for a precise public in their present, they do little to anticipate the potential publics they may have to absorb as and when the fleeting conditions, which necessitate these forms have subsided into history. Herein, they reveal the comic tragedy of instating architecture with the design of the city, that most desired scope of work. The city, which by its liberal democratic definition is a creator of possibility, is thus reduced to a handful of variables in light of architecture's hegemony, and points once again to a recurrent disciplinary malaise for death by total design. This totality comes all too clearly at the expense of excluding a generous swath of a present and future public and the potential it offers. Whilst the radical manifesto has become a thing of the past, the best means of contemporary attack is elective participation. By this I mean to acknowledge one's constraints within the market, and to deliberate over the potential agency of architecture through more operative means. Herein, a self-conscious sense of humor about the discipline's megalomania is paired with the sincere ideals for creating urban possibilities through architectural form within the structure of neo-liberal economics. This coupling is explored through the design of an enclave for financial services in Mumbai, India. As the breadth of what constitutes the Indian middle class encroaches monumentality, the possibilities for an inclusive, privately owned public interior are interrogated through a manifesto for its ideal spatial tool, the room. A product of both architecture and urbanism, the room mediates between both disciplines by standing as a definitive form through its enclavic walls and simultaneously creating urban possibility in its void.

Rozewski, Richard. "THE WALLS WE PUT UP - LONELINESS AND BELONGING IN URBAN CO-LIVING." VCU Scholars Compass, 2019. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5871.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Concurrent issues of social isolation and loneliness have long been recognized as problems that affect seniors but it is also being proven to affect young people as well, specifically with the rise of new technologies and a perception of connectedness. Co-living provides one alternative design solution to traditional housing models which can unlock a range of social benefits. MOTIVATION Loneliness is an unfortunate reality of modern life and it is something that most people experience at least once in their life (Cacioppo & Patrick, 2008). A study carried out by Berguno, Leroux McAinsh, Shaikh (2004), showed that 80% of young people and over 40% of adults over the age of 65 experienced loneliness in the course of life. Good housing plays an important role in building community and strengthening social interaction and bonding. Co-living is a residential structure that accommodates three or more biologically unrelated people (Bothell, 2015; Tummers, 2015). It is commonly contained within a single dwelling, sub-divided into a combination of public and private spaces (Scott-Hanson & Scott-Hanson, 2005). Co-housing, community living, or co-living in particular may be one possible solution for the endemic loneliness and social isolation challenges that we face. PROBLEM In many American cities, traditional housing forms are not meeting those needs and as our population increases, it is crucial to find replicable and sustainable methods of creating an inclusive urban fabric that meets the social and physical needs of all inhabitants (Darling, 2017). It is increasingly clear that there is a lack of understanding of the realities of co-living spaces and that this limits the application of the co-living model. While co-housing has traditionally been established in rural or suburban contexts, there are benefits to urban co-living (Kim, 2017). To experience the full ecological, economical and most importantly social benefits of urban co-living, research must be performed to understand how residents share, experience, and inhabit space. METHODS This project will respond by applying design thinking, a human centered design approach, and collaborative exploration methods to produce case studies for an urban co-living development in the US. Workshops, observations, literature reviews, and interviews will build a foundation of contemporary knowledge. Key themes identified in the literature on social isolation and loneliness will be used to inform a discussion on the potential for housing to help alleviate these problems. There will also be a rigorous case study analysis of recent precedents emerging in the field of collective housing. PRELIMINARY RESULTS The design of a flexible living space that explores isolation and connection at the scale of the individual and the collective in an existing building is an overarching goal of the design. It offers future users and designers the opportunity to learn and experiment towards a better understanding of how residents use space as well as examining loneliness and isolation as it relates to a design solution. CONCLUSION The success of the project, and its theoretical outcome, will show the role design can play in contemporary research, positive change, and sustainable development. The result will have implications for co-living providers, researchers, and designers supporting sustainable lifestyle alternatives.

Abstract:
According to Michael Pollan's article in Mother Jones Magazine, "The typical fruit or vegetable on an American's plate travels some 1,500 miles to get there, and is frequently better traveled and more worldly than its eater" (Pollan 38). The majority of citizens living in or near metropolitan centers rarely come in contact with produce pre-barcode; that is, produce still connected to the earth or not yet processed for mass distribution and consumption. This is especially the case in urban settings where land is at a premium and is valued more for residential and commercial purposes than for food production. In the case of U.S. cities, though we produce sufficiently to feed our population, the majority of produce consumed is grown outside of state lines if not entirely outside of the country. "In 2004, the U.S. exported nearly $20 million worth of lettuce - over 3/4 of it grown in California - to Mexico. The same year, it imported $20 million worth of Mexican lettuce" (Pollan 43). It is far more likely that urbanites seek references from their car mechanics and tailors than from producers of the food they consume. Locally grown and consumed food has several quality-of-life enhancing attributes, most importantly providing fresher, more nutritious produce with a known history, increased self-sufficiency with respect to food, and reduced environmental impact caused by reduced inter and intra-national transportation.

Abstract:
The program of the interior spaces of an urban country club is similar to that of an actual country club. The apparent differences between the two entities, independent of the interior, are primarily the location followed by the amenities offered. This club is set in a vastly urban location, where there is no alluring green space to be allocated to outdoor activities. The urban club must rely on social, indoor recreational spaces for its vitality. The urban club will be located in Riverfront Plaza West Tower, with views of the downtown and river, and will attract the urbanites of the surrounding area. These urbanites will enjoy the event and gathering spaces, restaurant and bar, while taking part in the workout and fitness facilities. The club will be private but not exclusive and based on social interactions. The space will be somewhere that the members of the community want to be with other members while dining, gathering, and working out. The feel of the space will be contemporary to mesh with the urban setting, and comfortable to reflect the feel of a rural get-a-way.

Abstract:
"Over 1.5 million single family homes went up in the United States in 2003 alone, and the vast majority of them, sadly, following not a single green design principle." Not only was green design, which is the search for better choices from an environmental perspective, not considered in these homes, neither were the millions of already existing homes within our cities. Modern construction and increasing sprawl are completely out of sync with the ecosystem of the planet and not only is the environment suffering, so is the condition of our cities. The location and inefficiency of these cookie cutter homes greatly contribute to the increasing dependency on automobiles, the clogging of landfills, the destruction of natural wilderness areas and the decrease in human social interaction. Creating a better alternative to the quickly multiplying new homes of suburban America is crucial to improving the future of the environment and the fabric of our cities. By revitalizing the dilapidated, often historic, neighborhoods of our inner cities with green design and building techniques we can improve the fabric of our cities and the daily life of their inhabitants.Located not far from downtown Richmond and littered with bus stops, public schools, parks and markets, the location of the Byrd Park neighborhood works to the advantage of its inhabitants as well as to the advantage of the environment. These convenient factors make Byrd Park appealing, but with further design and development of the existing residential structures the neighborhood will be more attractive and accommodating for a broader range of people. With the help of design, it can be a culturally rich, diverse, safe, comfortable and convenient neighborhood with accommodations for various lifestyles and income levels. Attracting a broader range of people will intern create an area rich in culture, social stimulation and diversity.

Abstract:
This design thesis is to provide an innovative design concept and approach to revitalize the area of Porto Interior. In this design, a piece of industrial waterfront in Porto Interior of Macao has been taken to revitalize the old town Macao and to enhance the protection of the Historic Centre of Macao at the same time. This design thesis is divided into 3 sections: 1) surveying, 2) planning and 3) landscape design section to show the generation of the design process. Site selection, problem findings and forecasting are supported by the surveying section. This information supports the generation of landscape planning and design concept for the Porto Interior waterfront. The main design idea is to connect the world heritage of Macao to the water edge and emphasize the linkage to other waterfronts in Macao in order to build up an entire public open space system. The “Connection” idea is to re?link the world heritage of Macao and Porto Interior waterfront in physical and mental way, as well as tangible and intangible way. In the whole design process, nine heritage paths are created in order to provide a physical linkage between the Historic Centre of Macao to Porto Interior. Main landscape areas?the celebrate nodes are generated by the intersection point between the heritage paths and the waterfront. Those nodes contain with different functions, such as plaza, garden, infrastructure, leisure and entertainment space and their design are inspired by the daily experience, story and element of the Historic Centre of Macao. Those inspirations are captured or interpreted into the nodes in mental and intangible way as well. This design idea and approach will shorten the distance between the world heritage and Porto Interior. At the same time, it provides a consistence experience to visitors and recalls visitors’ memory. The new design for Porto Interior is able to improve the living and business environment by providing higher quality public open space. Besides, vehicular circulation is improved as the design thesis proposes the harbor tunnel to link up the south and north of Macao and the light rail public transport system, moreover, pedestrian circulation is enhanced since the share street concept is promoted and the main carriageway between community and waterfront is narrowed, increasing the accessibility and adaptability from the residential area to waterfront public open space. “Connection” design vision is fully addressed in the waterfront design of Porto Interior, Macao. The new design waterfront is able to be a unique public open space to Macao, reflecting the spirit of the Historic Centre of Macao and blending with the history of industrial waterfront simultaneously.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes "compact living" as a sustainable lifestyle, enabling dwellers to fulfil theirliving requirements while considering ecological concerns. The idea of this project is derivedfrom a phenomenon that urban immigrants move to smaller houses because of the shortage ofaffordable rental house in dense Chinese urban areas, which causes an issue regarding lack ofwell-functioning small housings for urban tenants. In order to develop suitable compact livingsolutions, this scenario-based design project has developed. The compact living requirementsof Chinese urban tenants were studied through design research. Meanwhile, the studies ofexisting small-space solutions aim to come up with solutions by concluding strategies for thespatial-plan. As a result, the designer came up with a concept of "shared co-living community" second-landlord business model with three feasible interior design proposals. Keywords:interior design; sustainable lifestyle; compact living; small space;scenario-based

Abstract:
Great cities are in constant transformation, changing their image and their urban morphology. This process also has an influence on the relation between free and constructed places in their urban tissue. This work proposes to investigate the morphology of empties places inside the blocks, researching the occurrence of these - in Porto Alegre downtown. The work begins studying the concept of these courtyards and then, follows to the search situations at different times in architecture and urbanism history. The cases presented were select from the mainly urban models that had constructed the shape of Porto Alegre Historic Center. One of these models is the traditional city, represented by the design of the old town. The other is the modern city, which brought new relations between buildings and their environments. After presenting the inside blocks situations in two scales - of the cities and architecture - the research gets into the case of Porto Alegre, where inumerous underutilized places are hidden. At this moment, the work passes through an analysis of the urban development of the residential south side of Porto Alegre Historic Center. A chapter about morphological and typological aspects was also necessary for selecting and understanding the potential areas. The ultimate goal was the mapping of the empty spaces inside the blocks at the district - the recognition of intervention possibilities. This work, within the historical and theoretical analysis presented before, contributes with a base for researching about empties spaces inside the blocks.

Heÿdenrÿch, Antonette. "Social housing with interior public spaces : a new typology for the urban context of Pretoria." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/63650.

Full text
Abstract:
The project proposes the investigation into the adaptive re-use of abandoned and unused buildings in the Pretoria CBD to develop social housing that makes use of existing infrastructure, structures, economic activity and transport networks. This is done as a response to the need for social housing in the medium income market. Most developments for this market are built outside city limits and use precious resources and unnecessary new materials. This project focuses on what is currently known as Huis Potgieter, on the UNISA Sunnyside Campus, as a testing ground to develop theories and approaches that can be used in the development of future developments. Throughout the research conducted into the project, the residents have been emphasised as the main design informant, specifically by the regulations set out by the national government. Considering the highly user-centred approach as identified by the regulations, it is appropriate to approach it from an interior design knowledgebase. Looking firstly at the resident’s needs, those in similar housing developments and income markets have identified and emphasised the need and importance of shared public spaces. Other research has confirmed that public spaces are a large contributor to both the social and psychological well-being of the residents. This project focuses on providing public spaces as integrated areas within the building, interspersed between living units, in an effort to provide comfortable, inclusive, and enjoyable public spaces that encourage a sense of place among the residents. A design proposal to integrate interior public spaces into the daily lives of the residents was developed. Various public space theories were collated and synthesised to develop a set of theory-based guidelines for use in this and future social housing projects. The project aims to develop a proposal that considers all users in the development, both in their physical needs (in the form of an inclusive design approach), as well as their social and community needs, by providing public spaces that accommodate a wide range of users and activities. To benefit future studies and to contribute to the field of interior design, a new term, interior public spaces, was developed in order to describe the type of public spaces created. In order to create a strong identity for the building, which the users can relate and respond to in their own attachment and appropriation, the legibility of the intervention is large focus of the project. To increase the legibility of the building, the building identity – KwilaliCity - was developed to reflect strongly in the public areas of the building to create a common ground for all residents. The intervention ensures accessibility to its wide range of residents by introducing a strong inclusive design component, with a focus on wayfinding. Applying the wayfinding and inclusive approach early in the project allows for an integrated resolution that serves to strengthen the design approach. The intention that residents are encouraged to develop an attachment to KwilaliCity and their fellow residents is evident in the encouragement to appropriate specific elements in and around their homes, in order to reflect their identities and give them some control over their housing environment.
Abstract:
During the shift from the rule of Joseph Stalin to that of Nikita Khrushchev, people in the Soviet Union witnessed dramatic political, economic, and social changes, evident even in such private aspects of life as residential home interiors. The major architectural style of Stalin's era, known as Stalin's Empire Style, was characterized by grandeur and rich embellishments. The buildings' interiors were similarly grandiose and ornate. By endorsing this kind of design, Stalin attempted to position himself as an heir of classical traditions, to encourage respect for his regime, and to signal his power. When Nikita Khrushchev became the country's leader shortly after Stalin's death in 1953, he proclaimed that "excessive decorations" were not only unnecessary, but harmful. As a result, the standardized panel buildings produced at his initiative were defined by straight, plain lines, and were devoid of literally any architectural details that were not considered functional. These changes in Soviet architecture were reflected in interior design and furnishings: the minimalist aesthetic became their defining characteristic. The purpose of this study is to gain, through examination of existing literature, new insight into why a transition to a minimalist aesthetic was happening in the 1950s and 1960s in Soviet urban interior design. To achieve this goal, the present thesis analyzes works by contemporary scholars on the subject and examines statements the Soviet government as well as Soviet architects and interior decoration specialists made regarding the state's views on architecture and interiors during the period of 1950-1960. While research has been published that explores some aspects of this stylistic transition, the present work is unique in that it identifies and focuses on three distinct reasons for the change to minimalism in Soviet urban residential interiors under Khrushchev: the deficit of apartment space, reduction of construction costs, and ideological motives.

This research studies the role of Pentecostal religious groups with the migrants in a peripheral region of São Carlos in São Paulo. We focused, in this study, two churches located in the peripheral region of this city, specifically in the neighborhood called Cidade Aracy. We present the different stages of development, training and formation of this neighborhood with the configurations assumed by the space in its growing process, development and establishment as periphery. We use the concept of urban periphery linked to segregation conditions, highlighting the migration component of the residents of this studied area. Finally, we analyze the characteristics of the Pentecostal groups, focusing specially on to their role as hosts, helping migrants from other regions of the country and state with the adaptation process. Our theme is located in the larger context of the urban world as a fundamental feature of modernity with the reconfiguration of religious forms. Our theoretical field combines the sociology of religion and urban sociology. This paper includes intense fieldwork, the mapping of religious groups, questionnaires and interviews.

Abstract:
The design of an urban retreat within an industrial building in Georgetown, DC provides an opportunity to experience water in the built environment. The location of the building between two bodies of water—the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and the Potomac River—creates an opportunity to connect water and the visitors. Management of the water to ensure responsible resource use was researched and accommodated in the design. Water is further used to shape the space and the moods created by the volumes, materials and finishes. The final project provides a luxurious shower and locker room, a series of pools, and a tea room, open to the sky, across three levels.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The present Master’s Final Project consists of a practical-theoretical work, which will be focused on a proposal of urban revitalization in Marvila, through a program that intends to improve the economic and social conditions in this area of the city of Lisbon. Nowadays Marvila is labelled by factories and degraded buildings which makes this an area of interest for new architecture projects, because it’s a territory in change and full of history. The chosen program proposes the insertion of new green spaces, new athletic and leisure areas as well as new housing and work posts. Intends to bring new people to this region and to re-describe this territory once upon a time fully of life. Making Marvila into an interest point for the city of Lisbon, and potentiating new opportunities of employment and housing. The work will focus on an empty lot, located on Rua Capitão Leitão, and as in the urban proposal this program intends to attract new people. So a six-storey building with coworking spaces and temporary housing is proposed, for which a study of materials and colors for each space will be made. This work investigates the historical and geographical contextualization of the area under study and also an analysis of the themes that will help to understand how green spaces are important in the life of Man and in the city and how they can help solve some problems, such as noise, high temperatures, high winds, among others. A study will also be made on the importance of light, color and matter when Man perceives space and how the architect can use it in his favor.

Abstract:
Availability of good housing may no longer be an important issue for most U.S. citizens. Nowadays most are well housed and the problems confronting those who are not- except in the case of the homeless- are not highly visible. During the last decade, old warehouses in downtown Richmond, Virginia have been converted to new uses as restaurants, apartments, and offices. This reuse of old buildings has brought more people to the downtown area, making streets safer for pedestrians and residents than when the areas were abandoned. However, these well-designed and newly renovated apartments are not for everyone, especially low and moderate-income households because of the high rental costs. This thesis design provides a model for enhancing the character and diversity of low-income-family housing by transforming an abandoned urban structure in downtown Richmond into a holistic living environment.

Abstract:
Making up one quarter of the current United States population, some 80 million Generation Y-ers are changing the ways in which we live, work and play. Dubbed “Millennials” this population is comprised of those individuals born between 1980 and 2000. This generation is the first to have been raised with cell phones, the internet, and reality television. The “Selfie” or “Me Generation” is snubbed for narcissism and an instant gratification attitude. Yet on the whole Millennials have progressive values, are well educated, are conscious of their health and are optimistic about the future despite coming of age during the Great Recession. Millennials are also the most diverse, most informed and most well connected generation the United States has ever seen. They are supporters of the locavore movement and conscious of the environment. Their habits and tastes - constant Facebook status updates and Instagram posts - are much more communal in nature than narcissistic, the highest value of which is not “self-promotion, but it’s opposite, empathy -- an open-minded and hearted connection to others.” In this way Millennials are using social media and technology to build community in a new way - virtually. Before there was Facebook or Instagram, people found community in “third places” - social places independent of work or home in which to fraternize and build relationships. In his book, The Great Good Place, Ray Oldenburg examines the difference between the sociological functions of first place (the home), second place (the workplace) and third place. Third place can be described as the social place, a place independent of the home and workplace in which to fraternize and build community. Oldenburg argued that these places are in general decline, and more recent articles have noted that those brick and mortar third places are now being “hollowed out” by “cyber nomads”, those people in coffee shops and bookstores listening to headphones, typing away on a computer or talking on the phone. James Katz of Rutgers argues that these “physically inhabited by psychologically evacuated” places leave people feeling “more isolated than they would if the cafe were empty.” How do designers create spaces that support Millennials empathetic desire connection, that encourage interaction and that overcome the obstacle of becoming "psychologically evacuated" places?

Abstract:
This is a project about an old city block. It once housed confectioners, jewelers, restaurateurs, pharmacists, and retailers in street-level parcels with residents in the apartments above. Now, it is home to a barber, a few restaurateurs, and street vendors. Over 200 years of building and development have shaped what is now the north 100 block of E Broad Street and although most of it still stands, it shows the effects of renovations, time, and neglect. This is also a project about paths. As sidewalks move pedestrians along streets they provide paths to retailers, employers, homes, and places to gather and be. Instead of traveling alongside the city block, this project proposes a pedestrian path through it. By stitching together a series of fractured building parcels, the path begins and ends three hundred feet apart at the sidewalks of Broad and Marshall streets. Lastly, this is a project about movement. This bridge between Broad and Marshall Streets serves as a bridge between two different types of places. The collection of parcels that are united in purpose for the sake of this work touch with walls, floors, and ceilings and where they do, create opportunity for passage. Horizontal movement through the city block happens through large volumes defined by planes and program. Vertical movement occurs through perforated shafts and open layers that allow for users to comprehend distance and direction traveled.

This study analyzes the novel Capão pecado, by Ferréz, originally published in 2000. The book was reported on in a national newspaper even before publication and gained widespread attention because it was written by a young, unemployed resident of the poor areas in the south of the city of São Paulo, a region marked by high rates of violent crime and other social dysfunctions, a place where literature had never been a common form of expression. Inspired by a mission to show experiences that had, up to that point, been excluded from the literary scene and from the symbolic process in general, the author used an internal point-of-view that seems to function as a mediation on his own writing, creating a so-called agreement of verisimilitude. An important component of this project is the desire to bear witness. As will be demonstrated, however, the author\'s recognition that extra-literary factors are fundamental and intrinsic to the aesthetic elaboration of the object he is analyzing does not, however, diminish the decisive character of his fictional work.

Abstract:
By the need for energy conservation, there is a preoccupation on energy efficiency in buildings, by adapting to the local weather conditions and guaranteed access to sunlight in urban areas. It turns out that the availability of indoor daylighting suffer significant interference from the surrounding obstruction in the urban environment. Therefore, some urban and building parameters are determined by the urban legislation to establish land use limits and hence of visible sky. Given these aspects, this study aimed to analyze the interference of the urban environment in the availability of indoor daylight of multifamily buildings in the north of Maceió coast, from urban parameters established by regulation. In addition, we evaluated the contribution of the master plan and other regulations in fostering the availability of natural light, because it is a new area of the city to be worked and great potential for the use of natural resources. The methodology consisted of a parametric study with the use of simulation in TropLux 6 software to study the influence of the following parameters related to the urban environment: the road width, height obstruction, reflectance of the vertical outer surfaces, front and side distance and height in the building environment. Given our results, it was found that the presence of obstruction for the case study, although in most cases reduce the level of indoor daylighting, was effective in the use of natural lighting to maintain, most of the hours analyzed during the year, the illuminance values in the useful range of 100 lx to 2.000 lx. Finally, there was the importance of including more specifically, the Town Planning Code and Construction of Maceió city, parameters that provide effectively the use of natural light inside the environment, contributing to, so in control of the availability of illuminance within the company and consequently the possibility of reducing the consumption of electricity by means of artificial lighting.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the lifestyles of the middling sorts evolved during the period 1660 and 1760 as reflected in their relationship to material goods in three contrasting, but geographically near towns. The towns are similar to the degree that their history and circumstances led to them being viewed as backwaters, and this may have influenced consumption practices. Ludlow had lost its importance as the Capital of Wales; it stagnated until its fortunes began to be revived by achieving leisure town status. Hereford was a cathedral city and a county town, but was mainly poorly built and congested. It was locally, rather than nationally important. Tewkesbury was an inland port and a manufacturing centre, but it had been eclipsed by the larger and more successful cities of Bristol and Gloucester. This study of household goods in the middling interiors of Ludlow, Hereford and Tewkesbury between 1660 and 1760 set out first to investigate the extent to which the possessions of the middling ranks reflected their social status. The second aspect is to analyse the geographical spread of new goods in the three towns to determine the extent to which economic circumstances and location influenced consumption. Thirdly, the intention is to determine how status and politeness was expressed in the early modern home. Finally, this study aimed to ascertain what these factors could tell us about early modern consumers in the three towns. A sample of the domestic goods of the middling ranks from Ludlow, Hereford and Tewkesbury is examined and compared. The material culture of the three towns has previously attracted little academic interest. Abstract:
Although, the literature reveals that coach interior designs have been emphasized as an important factor determining their competitiveness in the market and the quality of an interior design can be effectively improved by using information about passenger expectations, few practical studies exist to assess the urban railway transport interiors from the passengers&rsquo
perspective. Consequently, designers lack reliable criteria to guide their decisions which would satisfy users. In this study, it is intended to develop a procedure to create interior design alternatives of urban railway transportation vehicles with regard to subjective needs and preferences of users. In order to acquire design criteria and recommendations for such interiors, the design alternatives are then evaluated quantitatively through the medium of semantic assessment tools. The thesis is supported with the arguments collected from literature and with the data from three empirical studies.

Abstract:
This study is a venture in urban history in that although housing has been the subject of a number of recent studies, little attempt has been made within the British urban history framework to give serious study to what lies behind the architectural facade, the material domestic culture of an urban community. An important objective of this study is to examine the material culture of domestic dwellings in early Victorian Grahamstown, also referring to other parts of the Cape Colony. Where possible these facts are related to the occupants of the dwellings. No community, urban or rural, can be divorced from the influences which lie beyond its immediate locality in region or metropol. As a preliminary to this study the urban background of industrial Britain is examined, as are English and Dutch cultural influences on the interiors of Cape homes in general. The occupational stratification and spatial structure of early Victorian Grahamstown are then explored, leading into· a discussion of the material domestic culture of the interiors of Grahamstown dwellings. In the final analysis, this study is an attempt to uncover the character of early Victorian Grahamstown and its possible implications for English cultural influences at the Cape. In so doing, not only what constitutes the domestic material culture of Grahamstown is established, but beyond that, a comparison made with domestic material cultural developments in another colonial, though not frontier, settlement with roots in Georgian and Victorian England, namely Australia.

Deterioration of air quality is one of the main environmental problems affecting cities around the world, with particulate matter pollution 2.5 (PM2.5) being the most dangerous and deadly for humans. The proposed solutions to help mitigate the negative effects of air pollution have been diverse; of these, one that has taken greater strength on recent times has been the use of urban trees to reduce pollution inside the cities. This way, through the software I-Tree Eco, developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the effects of urban trees on the interception and subsequent absorption of PM2.5, inside of Concepción city, Biobío region, Chile were analyzed. Using data of air quality, precipitation and the structure of urban trees, the software allows to estimate the amount of air pollution removed by trees over a year. To achieve the objective of this research, data from the National Air Quality Information System (SINCA) was used, while the filling of missing data was done through the individual data imputation method (SDEM Model). Complete rainfall data was obtained from the National Agroclimatic Network (AGROMET). Then, through photointerpretation of satellite images from Google Earth, plus the layers of green space surveying, extracted from the CEDEUS network and workfield, the most relevant elements of the green infrastructure inside the city of Concepcion were identified. Ecuador Park was identified as one of the most relevant spaces on this city, and a complete inventory of the urban trees that are present inside of it was made, identifying its structure. The data was then processed by the software, obtaining the total elimination of the contamination by PM2.5, their storage capacity and carbon sequestration, and their emission of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) that the urban trees of the park have. The results show that the park eliminated a total of 4.52 Kg of MP2.5 per year, while the elimination rate was 0.13 gm-2 for tree coverage; carbon storage was 350 tons of carbon and its gross sequestration was 3.24 metric tons per year, while the park species annually emit a total of 50.48 Kg of BVOCs.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to verify and analyze the commuting determinants at the Northeast Urban Agglomeration of Rio Grande do Sul (NeUA) in the year 2012 through the commuter workers who traveled in this urban agglomeration by public transport. These determinants are a relevant indicator of the labor market as well as the regional development. The importance of studying these determinants through the workers is due to the diffusion of the urban tendencies occurring in the large centers, the potential of commuting to spread throughout the country, and primarily because of the growth of medium-size cities and urban agglomeration within the country. The theoretical framework that supports the emergence of these agglomeration is found within Central Place Theory and Growth Pole Theory, since it is through the dynamic relations and the disparities in the distribution of economic activities at geographic or economic space that the polarization theory helps to comprehend the hierarchization of the regions and the effects of the population mobility. Methodologically, a survey was conducted that included the application of questionnaires in a sample of 430 commuter workers of the NeUA. Seeking for activities outside the city of residence, the commuter worker improves his economic/financial condition and, in addition, reinforces the transformation at geo-economic space with his daily movements. This reflects a different socioeconomic dynamic and highlights both the attraction that the pole ends up exercising over other regions as well as the conditions of the labor market, which are established by different logics. Besides the profile picture of the commuter workers, the research pointed out that there is a strong tendency for the polarization effects on the labor market in the study region. The research revealed that those effects are provided by the medium-size city of Caxias do Sul, which showed a greater centripetal movement, being responsible for almost 45% of the commuters’ destination of this region. With the exception of Santa Tereza and Monte Belo do Sul, all other cities within the NeUA presented a cross commuter. At the end, it was observed that two types of determinants exist that operate over the commuter: the determinant of stimulus – which can be related to the primary motivator or factor that led the person to seek for work activities in another city; and, the continuity determinant – associated with the reason why the person does not migrate to the city in which he works, given life and continuation to commuter. Analyzing those two determinants, the results indicated that the first one reinforces the theory that even in an inland urban agglomeration the first dominant motive over the workers' decision continues to be of economic nature, while the continuity determinant adds to the commuter theoretical discussion social factors, which become the dominant motives in the continuity of this phenomenon. Thus, it can be inferred that the hypothesis is confirmed because it was evident that the commute of workers is influenced by factors that comprehends two types of determinants. Is important to add, that was revealed that in the continuity determinant are included other factors than those presented by the determinant of stimulus.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: The cities are a reflection of social experiences, human relationships and how they relate to the city’s elements and spaces. Throughout the ages they suffer changes due to several factors, often as a result of adaptation to the demands and needs of urban life. With this work, I sought to investigate and reflect on the urban elements articulation – public space and urban block. Through the way they relate in the design of the urban network, I sought to understand how the urban block could integrate spaces for public use, as part of the articulation of different spaces. The project developed in Almirante Reis Avenue valley develops along Morais Soares Street and António Pereira Carrilho Street, a cross-road Almirante Reis Avenue, characterized by a strong commercial profile. In the approach to this cross-road it is sought to articulate the uses and attracting new activities and urban dynamics. Thus, the Masters final Project intends to foster the use of the inside of the urban blocks as a public space, with an intervention that promotes continuity of open spaces, giving them different characteristics and experiences, articulated with other urban elements and uses of the buildings. Thereby, intervention in the interiors of urban blocks passes through an alternative to the creation of public spaces in the city, with several features and functions. However, it should take into consideration the experiences of these spaces and their relationship with the uses of the buildings.

Abstract:
The rise of information technologies and creative industries formed a new class of “creative knowledge workers” with special needs for a workspace design. The recent tendency of playful and bold workspace designs for creative industries was labeled by some researchers as a “creative workspace,” but a body of knowledge about design strategies supporting “creative knowledge workers’” performance is still limited. This master’s thesis research attempts to define “creative workspace” design phenomenon based on the three main stakeholder groups’ perceptions. The research analyzes existing literature and conducts in-depth interviews with designers and users to collect the data and compare the findings. Based on the findings, research proposes an interactive exploratory design game helping to easier communicated spatial ideas related to the “creative workspace” design.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Urban interior environment mostly serves as a place for various meetings and social events. Thus, these spaces come alive thanks to people, who give them reason and meaning. However, the question is what role urban interior has in the present day, which, at the beginning of the new millennium, is characterized by a high degree of individualism. Within the deurbanization tendencies, buildings and adjoining areas in central parts of cities are often abandoned and the activities move to the periphery. If we want to return the social function to the urban interior, as a place of pleasant encounters and relationships, we need to approach its formation with respect to current trends in the development of human society. From the perspective of sustainable development, it is also necessary not to extend the boundaries of urbanized area to adjacent landscape, while abandoning the central locations in cities, but to maintain their intensive character. From this point of view, it is necessary to realize, that it is the greenery that gives the city an opportunity to perceive public spaces as an integral part of urban life and not just as places that people walk through having no reason to stay longer than necessary. Application of greenery in urban interior provides many positive features to the city. Greenery is an added value that can also operate independently as a functional unit that links the other functions of the urban organism. Both in its solitary form and in line or area applications. Along with water elements, urban furniture, various hard surfaces and landscaping, greenery creates a pleasant and interesting living environment in the city that can be desirable and sought-after again.
