Abstract:
Cognition and social values prevail in urban evolution. Analysis of these values reconstruct an era that has largely vanished; the context is historic downtown Tucson, and the significance is the Mexican enclave that had La Placita as its social focus. The historical evolution and the urban character of La Placita and its surrounding barrio is documented with emphasis on the social meaning of its change. A newly developed cognitive theory of vantages and coordinates provides a model to depict the viewpoints that defined urban development in Tucson. The analysis of personal viewpoint provides a statement of the manner that social values and cognition shaped architecture and urban change throughout the years of growth in the center of Tucson.

Abstract:
The impact of spatial characteristics on the dynamics of urban development is a topic of great interest in urban studies. The interaction between the residents and the spatial characteristics is of particular interest in the context of urban models where some of the most famous urban models have been based on the process of individual settlements in some specific parts of cities. This research investigates the dynamism of urban development modeled by Cellular Automata and Multi-Agent System. The urban development, in this study embraces urban renewal and residential mobility. It corresponds to the residential mobility of households, attracted by residential and centrality comfort; these comforts are crystallized in some areas and residences of Strasbourg. The diversity and quality of these comforts become criteria for residential choice in a way that the households seek for proximity to these comforts. The Cellular Automata in this study, models the spatial characteristics of urban spatial units and they are identified by some inherent attributes that are equal to the comfort in residences and urban areas. The Multi- Agent System represent a system in which the population of the city interact between them and between them and the city; the agents delegate the socio-professional classes of households. During the spatiotemporal change, the aspiration of households forms the socio-spatio-temporal development of the city.

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Real Estate Development)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, Center for Real Estate, 2008.
This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.
Includes bibliographical references (leaf 81).
This thesis investigates the factors, related to urban stadium development, that act as a catalyst for subsequent local urban renewal. Over the recent decades there has been substantial debate related to stadium or arena development. "The stadium debate intersects with cultural studies, economics, law, urban studies, civic planning, sports administration, mass communications, and sociology."' The center of this debate is over the economic and social "net benefit" to a city that undertakes a stadium development. Many argue that the economic and social costs created by urban stadium development outweigh the public good, especially in the case of publicly funded or subsidized stadiums. This thesis concentrates on the renewal of the surrounding real estate markets rather than broader economic renewal. When this thesis refers to "urban renewal" it is meant in the context of the renewal of the physical infrastructure and real property. The thesis examines the range of costs and benefits resulting from stadium induced urban real estate renewal. The benefits analyzed are derived from the changes in the local real estate markets that may be connected to the arena or stadium construction. The subject case study illustrates some of the broader economic benefits related to urban real estate renewal. Washington, DC provides a recent example of urban arena development that led to significant local investment in the development of the surrounding area. Construction of the Verizon Center led to development of residential, office, and retail product in the immediate area. The case study explores the factors (specific to the site, team owners, local developers, and city officials) that create a fertile environment for urban real estate renewal.
(cont.) It also ascertains, by way of interviews and public record, the concerns of these parties while making the critical decisions that can spark this type of urban rebirth. Using the Verizon Center case study, this thesis examines the factors that had a positive impact on urban renewal.

Schoon, Danielle van Dobben. "Becoming Roma: Gypsy Identity, Civic Engagement, and Urban Renewal in Turkey." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/579020.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is a study of economic, political, and social reforms in contemporary Turkey and how they are experienced by the country's Romani ("Gypsy") population. By focusing on urban renewal projects, the pluralization of cultural identities, and the proliferation of civil society organizations, this dissertation analyzes these changes in urban Romani communities, examining how state and civil society initiatives impact identity and civic engagement. This research contributes broadly to work in anthropology studying the relationship between culture and power, specifically investigating how local cultural identities and practices intersect and interact with transnational political-economic processes. While the meaning and application of the concept of 'culture' has been much debated in the social sciences, this analysis is situated within studies that consider culture a site of governance. Many modern forms of governance work less through force than by subjecting culture to the political logic of empowerment and improvement. This study interrogates this process via ethnographic research with dislocated Roma and Romani rights civic actors in three Turkish cities, focusing in particular on one dislocated Romani community from a neighborhood in Istanbul known as Sulukule. The project is unique in that it addresses Romani identity, culture, and citizenship where they intersect with current politics around urban development in Turkey. While 'urban renewal' projects are incorporating the land of the urban poor into new plans for Istanbul as a global city, Romani residents find themselves increasingly dispossessed. More than interventions that aim to improve the conditions of Turkey's Roma, urban development has renewed the politicization of urban Romani communities, particularly the youth, who have begun participating in social movements and Romani rights activism. The study finds that, while the changes resulting from liberalization and democratization in Turkey are typically posed by scholars, politicians, and civil society actors as either positive or negative, the advantages and disadvantages for marginalized populations like the Roma are actually simultaneously produced and mutually constituted. While Turkey's Roma are being integrated into discourses, practices, and institutions of Turkish national belonging and transnational Romani rights solidarity, they are also facing the dissolution of their local communities, traditional occupations, and cultural life. This dissertation suggests broader repercussions for anthropological understandings of the impact of free-market liberalization and democratization in so-called 'developing countries,' and particularly interrogates the politics of 'openness', the relationship between civil society and 'political society', and the role of transnational networks in urban politics.

Abstract:
Thoughts, memories or stories are stored as images in our minds. These images are a collection of realistic as well as unrealistic pictures. They help us to experience, to communicate, and to remember. A vehicle that implies a strongly visual image is architecture. With the new century, industrial architecture became an image for power, energy, and movement But today the once blooming manufacturing industry reached a stage of transition, it is dying out Our environment, our needs, and we are constantly changing. How does this transition affect our needs, or environment, and us? Does it mean, that our images change, too? And if so, will this change affect our experiences, memories, and our communication? This thesis explores the transition by observing and influencing a distinctive architectural setting. To talk, write, discuss about an image, we need to translate it into language. The metaphor for the connection of the industrial world and power, energy, and motion is the "Dynamic Face".

Abstract:
The project site in Helsingborg is located on a pier in a harbour area in Öresund, in Sweden’s southernmost province of Skåne. Helsingborg is Sweden’s eighth largest city. It is a densely built urban city, with a large former port area under redevelopment. The project site covers an old warehouse building - Magasin 405, and its surrounding plot. The goal is to re-use and repurpose the warehouse into a attractive meeting place in the city, while adding building volumes and public space to accommodate public activities and housing units within the project site. The new proposal is aiming to revatalize the waterfront area of Oceanhamnen (the Ocean Harbour) and help connect the segregated neighbourhoods ’North’ and ’South’ (”Norr” and ”Söder”) of the city centre. The renovation of Magasin 405 will make the waterfront district, and the city as a whole, more dynamic.

Truter, Clive Warren. "Stimulating urban renewal; through forging connection between architecture + public infrastructure towards an integral urbanism." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17482.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation I discuss the significance of field conditions to offer architecture a strategic dimension to evaluate process and enable public infrastructure with the potential to become catalytic towards an integral urbanism. Inscribed in this idea is a recognition that conventional architectural and planning practices are deficient to anticipate new alternatives in isolation; is that these traditional approaches are unsuccessful in negotiating mass mobility, interrelationships and perceptions in the contemporary city. Objectives The first objective is to transcend beyond traditional perceptions of infrastructure and develop an understanding of what infrastructure could be, through reconfiguring how it functions holistically in the urban landscape. Secondly, the aim is to formulate a comprehension of field conditions, through siting its significance for architecture as a strategic process-driven medium, to decode [or notate] latent and progressive urban scenarios. The third objective is located in the proposition, which explicitly notates a shift from the conventional notion of urban renewal, as we have come to understand it locally towards an integral urbanism. This aim of this is to investigate

Ren, Zhijie, and 任智劼. "The effects of flexible housing on urban housing obsolescence inChina." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2010. http://hub.hku.hk/bib/B47185399.

Full text
Abstract:
The rapid socio-economic development in China has given rise to the problem of housing obsolescence. The reduction of housing obsolescence and the increase in housing service life are important from the perspective of sustainable development. In extant literature, flexibility has been introduced as an important method to reduce housing obsolescence. However, no empirical evidence exists to illustrate the effects of flexibility on reducing housing obsolescence. Therefore, by correlating knowledge on flexibility and housing obsolescence, this study attempts to explore the effects of flexibility on reducing urban housing obsolescence with special focus on Chinese flexible housing practices during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. The research question which this study attempts to address is whether housing obsolescence can be obviously reduced by flexibility in Chinese flexible housing practices during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. First, the theoretical framework of this research explains Chinese flexible approaches within the context of Chinese housing development since 1949. Second, it explores the mechanism of obsolescence in flexible housing practices during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. The internal and external threat of housing obsolescence is discussed. A cross-national comparison is also made to understand the context of these practices. Third, theoretical framework suggests two scenarios and three theoretical propositions, and it specifies three key factors for analyzing the effects of flexibility on the reduction of housing obsolescence: changeability, housing obsolescence, and changing behavior by dwellers. Finally, it establishes a methodology for empirical investigation. Six Chinese neighborhoods built during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s which contain both flexible houses and similar ordinary houses are selected as cases according to screening criteria. Data are obtained by survey among households, interviews, analysis of archival records, and on-site observation. The main unit of analysis is a type of flat. The data analysis revolves around the three propositions put forward. The results of the empirical study indicate that the six cases do not agree with the three propositions. First, only a small number of households use the pre-set changeability in flexible flats. Second, flexible flats do not have a much lower score in housing obsolescence than similar ordinary flats. Third, the score on housing obsolescence for households who use changeability is not obviously lower than that for households who do not. These findings are discussed within the theoretical framework. In general, this research does not support the notion that flexibility in the flexible housing can reduce housing obsolescence obviously in the given context.

Hock, Jennifer. "Political Designs: Architecture and Urban Renewal in the Civil Rights Era, 1954-1973." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10460.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation considers the impact of the U.S. civil rights movement on postwar urban design and urban policy, looking specifically at the case of urban renewal, a federal program of urban reconstruction intended to help central cities modernize and compete with the growing suburbs. Tracing the history of three renewal projects from planning through design and implementation, it argues that these projects were shaped by public debates on civil rights and desegregation and the growing ability of community groups to organize and advocate on their own behalf. This dissertation also revisits the usual critique of urban renewal as a program of social and physical destruction and describes these years as a tumultuous period of construction and community building defined by new expectations for community participation and racial justice. Conceived in the 1950s, as the impact of postwar suburbanization began to be felt in older urban neighborhoods, renewal projects aimed to revitalize declining areas through targeted interventions in the built environment, including the construction of modern housing, shopping centers, and community facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of existing housing. During the turbulent 1960s, these physical design strategies took on political significance, as city officials, planners, and residents considered urban change alongside the social issues of the period, such the racial integration of the housing market, de facto school segregation, and community control over neighborhood resources. Although these projects often began as idealized experiments in racial and economic integration, they quickly became battlegrounds on which communities struggled to balance their desire for federal investment and modernization against the costs of displacement and gentrification. Ultimately, as the civil rights and Black Power movements gathered strength, racial identity and community control were privileged over integration and assimilation, and the buildings and spaces that represented postwar liberalism became targets of anger and protest. While many of these spaces now seem ill-conceived or poorly designed, the collapse of urban renewal is no mere failure of design or planning policy—it is the result of a profound shift in social and political relationships that played out through the negotiation of change in the urban built environment.
