Sempewo, Jotham Ivan. "Transitioning of urban water distribution systems." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4227/.

Abstract:
The upgrade of urban water distribution systems (UWDS) amidst uncertain global change pressures is a challenging problem. To deal with this dilemma water utilities require approaches that enable UWDS to be transitioned at a minimal technical and socio-economic impact as uncertainties become known. A review of approaches for upgrading UWDS shows that existing cost models are skewed towards operation and maintenance costs without consideration for future transitionability. This thesis describes approaches for the sustainable transition of UWDS and their application on case studies. The thesis de

Abstract:
In the arid western United States (U.S.), population expansion is dependent on water supply. With the majority of the water being consumed in agriculture, municipalities often obtain water supply needed for growth from agriculture. Water supply reallocation generally occurs through agricultural-to-urban water right transfers. This trend in agricultural-to-urban water transfers drives the question of how to strike a balance between agricultural and urban water needs in rapidly growing arid regions. In the Intermountain West region of the United States, Utah is a state with a rapidly growing pop

In the 1990s, housing policies, privatization and subsidies combined, were found to contribute to over one-third of the overall inequality in urban income distribution in China. My hypothesis is that housing inequalities are reinforced in the reform years. In the first half, I discuss three types of general mechanisms:

South Africa's unique history of racial segregation and spatial dynamics severely undermined the role and tradition of small-scale agriculture among the black population. In order to redress past injustices, the post-apartheid government aims to re-invigorate agriculture to improve food security and economic growth, with a particular focus on establishing a class of black small-scale farmers. However, changing livelihood trajectories, threats to sustainable agriculture, and the diverse and complex rural-urban interface challenge the sustainable role that small-scale farming can assume in peri-

Negative experience in the family is in large part a result of anadè, the Burmese rules of civility. For trans, the social consequences of anadè are more pressing problems than state repression. A number of technologies have been in use in the science classroom; however, their effects on teacher instruction and student achievement also remain under researched (Parks & Slykhuis, 2008). In addition, there is a need to study leadership styles with regard to teachers implementing the use of online resources as core instructional materials. Thus, the concern of this transition, as mandated by Texas Senate Bill 6, from using textbooks in the classroom to online instructional materials, will have a profound impact on teaching and learning in the classroom.
