Hải Phòng is one of the largest cities in Vietnam with an important role in the country’s economy and defense. Yet studies regarding the city’s development and changes are still limited. A main obstacle for Hải Phòng’s urban study is the lack of systematic and reliable records and analyses, especially for the 1955–1986 period, when Hải Phòng underwent major structural changes in a radical move towards the new socialist order. This essay attempts to bridge the gap by using relevant articles published in the Hải Phòng official daily newspaper to identify and explain the most significant urban ch

Urban Art is considered one of the most important artistic movements of the 21st century and Portugal is not behind on this trend. The two main cities of Portugal — Lisbon and Porto — have invested a lot of their efforts, combating vandalism, legitimizing urban art, legalizing murals and supporting street artists. This study explores the migration experiences of young LGBTQ+ individuals who moved from rural provinces to Hà Nội and Hồ Chí Minh City between 2010 and 2017, addressing a gap in research on LGBTQ+ migration within Vietnam. By analyzing their narratives, the study reveals that their migration is influenced by perceptions of the rural-urban binary. The primary motivations identified include the pursuit of educational opportunities, escape from societal expectations and control, and the search for a supportive urban LGBTQ+ community. With 38% of its population living in cities, Vietnam is in the process of completing its urban transition. The arrival of populations from the countryside coupled with a process of spatial sprawl is part of the urban catching up that the country has been doing since the liberalization of its economy at the end of the 1980s. Poles of concentration of value and population are rapidly being formed: the metropolises. The Vietnamese metropolises, starting with the capital city-province of Hanoi, are the vehicle and modus operandi of the country's transition to a market economy, and they crystallize

The emergence of popular journalism in 1930s Vietnam allowed for new forms of commentary on a transformed urban life, among them caricatures featuring LB Toéét, a villager bewildered by his encounters with the modern city. This article uses the LB Tot cartoons that appeared in the weekly journal Phong Hóóa [Mores] as a window on urban attitudes toward the modern. It suggests that the illustrations reveal a considerable ambivalence toward modernity on the part of Phong Hóóa's editors, despite their rhetorical commitment to the new and the modern.

This thesis develops a theoretical and practical framework of analysis for measuring the liveliness of urban streets. It studies the inter-related functions of streets to cater for the dynamic activities of people (walking) and the more static activities such as stopping, sitting, standing, waiting, watching, eating, etc. Practically, this framework measures the empirical relationship (the configuration) between these spatial and social functions, (the accessibility and sociability of the street). The sociability is measured through the capacity of the street to accommodate static activities.

The private provision of educational services has been representing an increasing fraction of the Peruvian schooling system, especially in recent decades. While there have been many claims about the differences in quality between private and public schools, there is no complete assessment of the different impacts of these two type of providers on the labor markets. This paper attempts to provide such a comprehensive overview by exploring private-public differences in the individual returns to education in Urban Peru. Exploiting a rich pair of data sets (ENNIV 1997 and 2000) that include questi

Abstract:
To promote active transportation modes (such as bike ride and walking), and to create safer communities for easier access to transit, it is essential to provide consolidated data-driven transportation information to the public. The relevant and timely information from data facilitates the improvement of decision-making processes for the establishment of public policy and urban planning for sustainable growth, and for promoting public health in the region. For the characterization of the spatial variation of transportation-emitted air pollution in the Fresno/Clovis neighborhood in California, v

This study analyzed the historical trends in change orders (COs) associated with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) highway contracts. It also investigated correlations between COs and base factors (district, project type, contract type, award amount, geographical area (rural vs. urban)), and sought to understand the effect of the root causes but not to predict CO based on root causes. Unlike the base factors, the root causes are unknown prior to construction. The study developed models that forecasted CO characteristics—CO likelihood, CO frequency (count), and CO severity (magni

Abstract:
The survey presented in this report reveals that Nordic citizens are concerned about climate change. Many people are willing to increase efforts to fight climate change, even if this entails a personal contribution in terms of higher taxes or behavioural change. The survey shows that different social groups perceive the impacts of climate change and climate mitigation policies in different ways. In general, attitudes towards climate policies and perceptions regarding their fairness are conditioned by socio-demographic factors such as gender, age, employment status, type of housing and transpor
