Full textThe contemporary urban studies debate intends the city as an open complex system that interacts with the environment and other cities creating a complex global network. At the same time, the city is subject to continuous and rapid changes that generate instability conditions making it fragile. The institutions, responsible for sustainable development of territories, struggle to deal with these phenomena generating situations of inefficiency and poor functioning of city system and its parts. For example, the difficulty of institutions to manage the territory is represented in static and rigid space arrangements of a fluid system. These situations cause the misuse/under-use of spaces and services by society and the dissatisfaction of city users needs. In an attempt to fill the gap left by public actors, community initiatives are emerging from below aimed to shape urban space creating new opportunities for community use. These are forms of collaboration and cooperation among different individuals that take responsibility for urban resources by satisfying both collective and individual needs. They are social resilience experiences, or rather actions-reactions by individuals that represent alternatives to traditional planning. The social component abilities (reactive, adaptive and proactive) increase the quality of urban system in terms of enhancement, sustainability and attractiveness. From these interactions among physical elements and individuals, new forms of wealth are generated as urban commons. The present research refers to alternative methods related to planning and design processes of urban spaces and wonders how local planning can ensure, within urban services topic, the initiatives and actions of citizens aimed to adapt spatial urban resources to community needs. It defines a specific typology of urban commons, city resources shared by a heterogeneous group of individuals. In particular, the research focuses on three objectives: two theoretical (the investigation of urban commons features and the comparison with urban services in the Italian context, in particular Lombardia region) and one applicative (the analysis of urban commons distribution in a real context, the city of Segrate - MI).

The thesis analyzes the possibilities of the reuse of the brownfields or underused areas concentrating itself on the relationships between public-private partnerships associated to new strategies and modality of production of territory. The thesis, structuring an abacus of strategic addresses for economic and social regeneration, promotes a new model of city evolution the “revitalization” of the degraded sections in favor of new productive cycles.

Full textThe main question raised by this research is about the architecture of the city; through the study of urban projects drawn up by the architect Willem Marinus Dudok for the city of Hilversum, the thesis wants to confirm the hypothesis that the construction of collective "urban places" is the core of the idea of architecture leading to the construction of the city. The choice of the theme is geared to offer a useful contribution to corroborate this hypothesis, considering the architecture of the city as "fixed scene of human affairs, full of feelings of generations of public events, private tragedies, of new and ancient facts". The research aims to study the contribution made by Dudok to the project of urban development of the Dutch city, considering a time span ranging from 1915 to 1954. It certainly does not want to outline a model, considering the knowledge that each project has its own place and time; tries to outline, however, a possible “scenario” for the urban project, able to serve as an exemplum for the construction of the city. The argument, in essence, based on the study of residential expansions designed by Dudok, tries to indicate a leading path to some of the formal principles of urban design, considered as a discipline "halfway" between planning and building project. The projects analyzed deal with residential buildings and urban spaces for the community; these represent real cores aggregation for the construction of housing complexes, which define the fixed scene of human affairs. Therefore the study of these neighborhoods is an attempt to decode a "way" to compose the city, from which it is possible to extrapolate valid and general themes that allow to formalize a number of useful lessons, through which the realization can be thought of.

Full text"Go-tv" refers to video-communication systems located onboard transportation vehicles and in connected venues, in high-transit locations. The research focuses on the Italian territory and provides the main historical coordinates of the development of this medium, framed within the wider context of contemporary media. From a theoretical level, the dissertation considers both the relation between this medium and the urban environment and the interconnections between communication, mobility, and transportation. Its consumption places, indeed, call into question a particular sociological and topological status. The main output of this work consists of an explorative analysis of the commercial and professional habits underlying this particular channel of audiovisual distribution, which is examined in the wake of media production studies. The project revolves around three main points: the proposal of a univocal definition of the phenomenon, a tentative modelling of its media profile and a mapping of the main cases of Italian go-tvs, complemented by a series of case studies.

Full textThe issue and the motivation of this research is to give a theoretical dignity to all these practices that claim an appropriation of the urban space, even out of its semiotic meaning. In consonance with Michel De Certeau approach, even the concept of art has been analyzed as an everyday form of expression. The street art has been examined either as a space-crossing practice either as a style of spatialization: the altogether product is a space-effect which underlies a certain effect of presence. The goal of this work is to obtain a portrait of the city from a series of creative micro-narrations that illustrate it, as, for example, Banksy’s intervention on the West Bank Barrier in Palestine, the inscriptions of the Brazilian pixadores, Parkour tracers’ city crossings, the portraits posted up in the city by JR. The street art is a possible way of narration of the city, as a tattoo on the skin, it tells the hard moments, celebrates the identification elements, recollects the history (even for the far cities) with a continuous dialogue between itself and the Other. From a methodological point of view, we started from case analyses to question certain semiotic issues with the help of Eric Landowski’s thoughts about interactions and lifestyles, Jacques Fontanille’s ones about life practices and forms, Francesco Marsciani’s reflections on ethno-semiotics. The analysis of the phenomenon has been enriched by the contribution of other social sciences which had already pondered on the concept of space and its artistic representation, anthropology among the others
