Abstract:
Itsekiri people came from Egypt after the battle of Actium in 31 B.C. They arrived and settled in the present Warn Kingdom in about 28 B.C in Gborodo, Ureju and Ode Itsekiri. The leaders of the teams were Iset, Iweret and Ipi. The word Oritse which means God in Itsekiri appears to be closer to Osiris, god of the Nile than those of their neighbours - Urhobo, Ijaw and Ilaje. Ra, the god of the sun in Egypt that helps the crops to mature is the wife of Umalokun in Itsekiri, the provider of sea foods. Ife oracle with its 256 literary corpus is a compendium of the cultural practices of the people. It includes the metaphysical and psychic studies of the people, a source of ethics and discipline of the people. It must be sustained to raise the spiritual level of the people. The phenomenological approach was employed by the authors to examine the historical configuration of the Itsekiri social system and the place of Ife oracle. It was concluded that Ife oracle, as compendium of knowledge and reality, is the access point to understanding our human inheritance and realizing our core values. Upon this, it was recommended that Ife oracle is not fetish. Rather it is a valid and reliable source of knowledge.

Abstract:
Contradictions between traditional and modern system of production seem to be the most important cause of the delay in the implementation, of technical devices for sanitation of wastes water in ile ife, nigeria. Traditionally the yoruba culture dealed with specific devices for waste water sanitation, centered in the housing unit (compound). The public power of the city -state was charged of the implementation and maintenance of drainage devices at the town level presently in ile ife, traditional practices still exist, in the ancient core of the town, where still survives the traditional social organisation. In the new urbanized areas of the town, only the private initiative operates, beeing the role of the local gover nement quite absent. The implementation of sanitation policies by the federal governement of nigeria has been, up to now, almost a failure. The states governements, with some exceptions, failed to organize sanitation services; the local councils, charged of the implementation of sanitation devices in their area of governement have not financial and technical tools to reach their tasks. .

Abstract:
Which perception do the ife people have of themselves and how do they express the world around them and the world they imagine? that is the subject for this thesis. In order to write it, we collected and examined more than five hundred texts belonging to all oral types known among the ife, of profane and sacred register. According to these texts, it occurs that the ife believe in many gods gathered into a sufficient hierarchy to distinguish cosmic gods and local ones. If the individual sacrifices to many gods, the clanic group to which he belongs generally does not recognize but one god. So can we speak of monotheism or polytheism about this group? that is an ever more important question that if the ife believe in a being which is above divinities, they don't worship it. The ife people look attentively at the world around them and it is interesting to notice that the features they recognize to beings and things are used for their literary creations. So tales, songs, mottos, etc. . . Reveal an anthropomorphic world. We don't speak in those texts only of gods and the world, but also of man who is painted with a great precision in his physical and moral features. Oral litterature among the ife people is not only a vision on the world. It is also an art and we have analyzed the typical features of this art in the seventh and last chapter of our thesis

Abstract:
"Kaduna in the Nigerian urban network" is a significant and current theme of study at a time when the impacts of rapid and uncontrolled urbanization are increasingly preoccupying urban dwellers and public authorities in Nigeria. This work is aimed at finding a system of instruments of analysis that would help to understand the complex process of urban development in Nigeria. It is articulated on three major axis of study, namely: -the study of the formation and functioning of the national urban system. - analysis of the factors and parameters that come into play in urbanization in Nigeria, through the case study of a city that epitomizes the present urban situation. Kaduna, a city which had a population of 1, 2 million inhabitants in 1989, was chosen for its peculiar role in the national urban network. - reflexions on the means of controlling urban development in Nigeria and particularly in Kaduna. Propositions were made about how to improve the functioning of the urban network and solve the problems with which Kaduna is confronted

Paris 4, 1992. http://www.theses.fr/1991PA040199.

Abstract:
The coastal Niger delta is a low-altitude plain (20 meters above sea level at the most), widely spread out as compared to the other deltas in Africa it covers 36,269 square kilometers, but scantily populated, about 5,069,00 (1989 estimate) ie 140 inhabitants per square kilometers. The delta spreads over the main part of the low Nigerian continental shelf which runs from Lagos to Cameroon. It is situated between longitudes 5w and 6 04' e and the latitudes 8 48' n and 4 7' s and is bounded by the Benin river (to the west) and the Bonny river (to the east). The main problems of development, expansion, planning and equipping the delta towns concern the topography, the geography as well as the human aspect. However, our research aims to throw light on the expansion possibilities of the delta towns according to the planning guidelines (which will take into account the local economic situations) and to the delta's administrative organization

Ekundayo, O. O. "Status, solidarity and social mobility in domestic space : a comparative study of kitchens, cooking and culinary practice in Ile-Ife, Nigeria." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2007. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1430366/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores how three prominent themes in social relationships - namely, status, solidarity and social mobility - are manifested in different lifestyle settings, by analysing the dynamics of culinary practice within the domestic space, based on an ethnographic study of seventy five households from the mid 1990s in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Many ethnographic studies identify the kitchen as a gendered space, and argue that because gender defines status and power relations in society, such distinctions will be manifested in the way space was designed and used. A gendered space is therefore a status space. The purpose of this study is show how status is manifested in space, and to measure this manifestation by analysing the distribution of culinary practices in space. The sample cuts across the socio-economic strata of Ile-Ife, and within these neighbourhoods, people live in two distinct spatial patterns, whereby one shares their domestic space with other households, while the other lives separately from other households. By using a combination of architectural morphology tools based on the space syntax theory and descriptive statistics, the study analyses the shared presence of persons, objects, activities, and food in space in order to measure the interrelationship between space and social status. The study found that there was a tendency for the status of variables to be influenced by other variables that shared the same spatial environment. The study found that higher status culinary activities and objects were associated with segregated spaces in shared accommodation, which suggests that segregation correlates with exclusivity. However, in the modern self-contained households, higher status activities took place in integrated spaces and in this sense fostered inclusion with the family. Socially, the findings suggests that there is a convergence of social positions and blurring of age and gender role boundaries in relation to culinary activity, with increased socioeconomic status and social mobility of women.

Full text
Abstract:
Parental involvement (PI) in three socio-economic disparate primary schools in Ile-Ife in Nigeria was investigated in the study. The study explored the effect of socio-economic status on PI using three schools representing the Lower socioeconomic status (LSES), Middle socio-economic status (MSES) and Higher socioeconomic status (HSES). The study reported how parents of three different income groups practice and perceive PI and how teachers perceive PI at the schools and what their expectations are regarding PI. The data used for empirical investigation was drawn from 15 parents and 15 teachers at each of the three schools. The parents were selected using convenience sampling and were individually interviewed while teachers are selected by purposeful random sampling and data was collected using focus group interviews and survey questionnaires. Results shows that parents’ available time, interest, level of education, social capital, parent-teacher contact and socio-economic status (SES) affected PI of which time, SES and interest were the most important factors affecting PI. PI is evidenced in all SES groups as joint cooperation between parents and teachers in support of children’s scholastic pursuit. The study suggests that, contrary to conventional opinion, parents of LSES generally have high educational goals for their children and evidence noteworthy PI practices. PI should be strengthened by building on existing positive endeavors and addressing areas of PI which are lagging behind. Strategies to strengthen these endeavors are recommended in conclusion of the study.

Schott, Daniel. Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/2209.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses Reinhard Bonnke's evangelistic ministry in Africa, and examines to what extent his propagated "Evangelism by Fire" conforms with the New Testament ministry of evangelism. The results of an analysis of the New Testament ministry of evangelism, especially of the evangelistic ministry of Philip, provide the basis for a comparison with Bonnke's understanding and practice of the evangelistic ministry. A thorough analysis of Bonnke's publications, especially those referring to the theme of evangelism, allows a systematic insight into his understanding of the evangelistic ministry. In order to examine the conformity between Reinhard Bonnke's understanding and his practice of evangelism, expert interviews referring to his gospel crusade in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in 2002 are analysed, and compared to his understanding of evangelism. Finally, the findings about Bonnke's understanding and practice of evangelism are related to the New Testament evangelistic ministry, and analysed synoptically. The research results of this study show that Bonnke's understanding of evangelism and his practice of evangelism, during the gospel crusade in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, conform with each other. Bonnke's propagated and applied "Evangelism by Fire" shows him to be an evangelist orientated to the New Testament.

Abstract:
In this chapter, the authors report on a recently concluded research study of the nature of adult informal learning in two local markets in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Through case study research design, the authors explore what adult buyers and sellers learn as they interact in two local markets, who learned from who, and how they acquire the specific learning experiences identified. They examine the factors that drove learning and provide an explanation, a substantive theory of informal learning in the two local markets, which they name Communication, Value, and Profit (CVP).
