Abstract:
The study examines the image of Islam and Pakistan post 9/11 scenario documented in Pakistani Urdu and English newspapers. Results are deduced by analyzing headlines while applying the CDA model projected by Fairclough (1989, 1995) with respect to vocabulary items, viewpoints, and newspapers' ideologies. The results from the study indicated that these two newspapers heavily rely on some selected lexical items to manipulate and control the belief system of the masses. It was shown from the data that Nawa-iWaqat, an Urdu newspaper, fervently utilized figurative language to influence the perception of its readers. It is seen from the analyzed data that the selection of words made by Urdu newspaper is mainly based on prejudice toward certain prominent social figures, politicians, and even toward world-renowned political figures and events. The collected data from the two newspapers and their critical discourse analysis indicated that daily 'Nawa-i-Waqt' gave abundant, sentimental coverage to the issues concerned. On the other hand, the daily 'Dawn' newspaper gave little but positive coverage to the issues of that time.

The analysis of the selected texts from both English and Urdu newspapers was done in the light of three-dimensional model presented by Fairclough (1989) and the images were analyzed with objectification theory by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997). The analysis shows gender representation in these newspapers was deep-rooted in their ideological positioning determined by the typical social ideology. The analysis showed that women in Urdu newspaper are represented as objects in provocative manner. They are represented mostly in their stereotypical role like house wives and pieces of enjoyment for men. The English newspaper on the other hand, showed them more in their professional role though with some cultural tags as well.

Abstract:
Problem Statement: There is limited research in context of coverage of climate change in the vernacular press like Urdu journalism and the study fills the gap. The studies which are conducted in context of Pakistan have focused on limited variables for analysis. Aims and Objectives: The objectives of the study are to research the effects and efficacy coverage of climate change in the editorials of leading Urdu language newspapers of Pakistan. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework comprises of triangulation for the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM) and framing theory. Methodology: The method which is used for analyzing the contents of newspapers in quantitative content analysis. The universe for the study is 3 years of editorial coverage of climate change in the Roznama Jang and the Roznama Express from September 2018 to August 2021.The units of analysis are lead editorials and the sub-editorials. Results/Findings: The study finds that there was limited editorial coverage of climate change in the Urdu language newspapers of the Roznama Jang and the Roznama Express (n = 88). The Roznama Express covered more editorials than the Roznama Jang but both the newspapers had editorial coverage in the sub-editorial section. However, the Chi-square test of independence by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25, did not inform any significant difference in the Roznama Jang and the Roznama Express for the editorial coverage of the effects and the efficacy towards climate change. The Roznama Express seemed to provide balance by covering both the effects and the efficacy levels towards climate change which means that the newspaper had effectively communicated the risk of climate change. Conclusion: The study concludes that the newspaper editorials did not focus on the effects of climate change on public health and self-efficacy towards climate change and here is scarce coverage related to coverage of climate change in the editorial section of newspaper which needs attention of editorial board or vernacular press Recommendations: The editors of the newspapers will have to make news stories by keeping into consideration the agendas of the effects of climate change on public health and the self-efficacy towards climate change.

The study reflects that the editors of newspapers have concealed ideologies that aim to create a sensation among their readers by employing a stimulating lexicon. These headlines function as a tool for propagating the hidden ideologies of editors to achieve their concealed objectives. The study draws the conclusion that newspaper headlines are representations of the editors’ ideologies which reflect their political, religious and personal propensity regardless of their claim to be unbiased and neutral in their field. The newspaper editors exploit headlines to shape readers’ thinking on issues of national concern.

Abstract:
This study investigates how leading English and Urdu newspapers in Pakistan cover issues of physical and sexual violence against women. The primary objectives include examining the extent and nature of coverage, comparing Urdu and English newspapers, and analyzing media framing of these issues. The research questions focus on identifying the types and amount of violence reported, the space allocated, the placement of news items, and whether the coverage is favourable or unfavourable. Utilizing framing theory and feminist theory, the study adopts a cross-sectional research design and employs content analysis to examine data from June 1, 2021, to May 31, 2022. The sample includes Daily Jang, Daily Nawa-i-Waqt, The News, and The Nation. Indicators such as the type of violence (physical, psychological, sexual), placement of news (front page, back page, crime page), and column space were coded and analyzed using Chi-Square tests. Results show that Urdu newspapers provide more extensive and unfavourable coverage compared to English newspapers. Physical violence received the most coverage, followed by sexual and psychological violence. Significant findings highlight the media's role in perpetuating stereotypes and biases against women, emphasizing the need for balanced and ethical reporting. Recommendations include enhancing media literacy, promoting ethical journalism, and advocating for policies that ensure fair representation of women's issues in the press.

Abstract:
This work critically analyzes the linguistic items projected in Pakistani Urdu newspapers regarding America, West and Islam after September 11. Data for this research was collected from the three leading Pakistani Urdu newspapers i.e. Daily Jang, Daily Express and Daily Nawa-i-Waqt. Results are generated while applying CDA model projected by Fairclough (1989, 1995) & Dijk (1985) as models, with respect to vocabulary items and newspapers’ ideologies. It was showcased from the data that Nawa-i-Waqat, fanatically employed linguistic items i.e. selected lexical items and literary figures to influence the opinion of its readers regarding the three-part issues. On the contrary, the Daily Jang and the Daily Express showed discernment regarding America and West in their reporting during the said era. Yet the coverage of these two prominent newspapers alleviated the image of Islam inside and outside the country to their bounds.

Abstract:
The current study explores the problematic background of language variation within the print media domain, specifically exploring code-switching patterns in the editorials of the Pakistani Urdu' Express' newspaper. Code-switching is a linguistic phenomenon involving alternation between two or more languages within a single discourse that reflects the dynamic interaction of cultural and communicative factors. The study put into practice a sociolinguistic lens to analyze the frequency, types, and functions of code-switching employed in the Urdu editorials of the 'Express' newspaper. The study applies a qualitative descriptive method; it produces descriptive data in the form of code-switched sentences from the editorial of Pakistani Urdu newspaper. 'Express' is selected for this purpose. One week of newspapers is collected for the current study from 1st October 2023 to 7th October 2023 to analyze code-switching in editorial sections. The analysis of data from the newspaper shows that the types of code-switching are intra-sentential, word code-switching, and total integrated Urdu. The most dominant type of code-switching observed is Intra-sentential (80%). The findings are expected to contribute to understanding how language is strategically employed in print media, shedding light on the role of code-switching as a tool for effective communication and cultural expression. This study holds significance in media discourse, as it exposes the linguistic choices made by writers and editors in the 'Express' newspaper, offering insights into the complex relationship between language, culture, and journalism. The results of this research are anticipated to inform future discussions on language dynamics within the Pakistani media landscape and contribute to the broader field of sociolinguistics.

From the theoretical perspective of lexical morphology (LM), this paper analyzes neutral and non-neutral affixes and their general organizational position in the morphology of derived words in Urdu. It explores the properties and behavior that Urdu affixes exercise during their attachment or insertion into roots/bases to produce new words, to question the assumptions of LM. Nine hundred and eighty sample words were randomly selected from our observations, articles in Urdu newspapers, and Urdu news television channels in Pakistan. While LM helps a lot regarding the analysis of neutral and non-neutral affixes, its assumptions concerning the hierarchical organization of affixes in derived word-formations do not correspond with the morphology of words in Urdu. This paper contributes as an initial step toward formulating a theory of the morphology of derived words in Urdu – a language rarely theoretically analyzed regarding the morphology of its derived words.

Media influence on politics has always been a debatable subject due to its immense potential. Media is regarded as the fourth estate of the nation, and the role of traditional media in the political arena is indispensable. The agenda-setting by newspapers plays a pivotal part in forming the image of a political party. This study is an exertion to examine the leading English and Urdu newspapers (Dawn, The News, Jang, Nawa-i-Waqt) of Pakistan to find out the portrayal given to PPPP, PML-N and PTI during PPPP's five-year (2008- 2013) regime. By employing the content analysis method, findings indicate that PML-N was given the maximum editorial and news coverage regarding the important national issues, whereas PPPP got the second most frequent coverage. PPPP was presented in an unfavourable manner, and PLM-N was given the least negative reportage. Results of the study revealed that English and Urdu newspapers adopted a supportive stance towards PML (N).

Abstract:
This paper is intended to bring on limelight the role of some prominent political organizations in Jammu and Kashmir and their internal political development within the state. The paper is an attempt to look objectively into the role of such organizations in raising political awareness among Kashmiri masses through a variety of means and tools in the shape of newspapers, especially Urdu newspapers, which were crucial in raising political consciousness. In this context this paper will make a modest attempt to illuminate the press’s development from its beginnings and their contribution to the national awakening of Kashmir's masses. As we saw how the press encountered a number of challenges at the national level under colonial control, the state press likewise encountered a lot of challenges during this time and was opposed by the state government on every level. The Punjabi newspapers, on the other hand, were essential in raising the voice of Kashmir during early phase of the 20th century, which in turn helped the Kashmiri masses become more politically aware. Additionally, this paper would make a small attempt to investigate how these newspapers unite people socio-culturally and politically. There are large number of newspapers which cover wide-ranging issues so for as the Kashmir issue is concerned. There were a lot of newspapers published in Urdu, but most of them only lasted for about six months once they displayed their political leanings, which the government forbade.

Abstract:
AbstractLiterary journals and newspapers aiming to reform the religious beliefs and domestic habits of women were common in early twentieth-century North India. Although most readings have focused on how these texts reflected male legislation of women's behaviour, we should look at Muslim reformist literature to understand male experiences; this investigation offers new insights into an emergent middle-class identity defined more by manners than birth. Readings of a previously little-researched Urdu newspaper, Madinah, and its women's section offer new insights on male experiences of reformism, characterized by profound ambivalence. Playfulness emerged in some reformist descriptions of women's voices, channelling the influence of rekhti. Ultimately Madinah cultivated pride in Islam's strict division of gender roles and conversely threatened men with shame for failing to regulate uneducated women. Descriptions of powerful, Ottoman women warriors were framed to incite men to acts of bravery, using reports from Europe as cautionary examples of the over-indulgence of women. While the newspaper offered outlets for men to express curiosity about women's experiences, ultimately reformist literature limited expressions of pleasure. Male ambivalence regarding the implications of the reformist project remained embedded in writing about women.

Abstract:
This study discovers the framing of civil-military conflicts in Pakistani newspapers from 2008 and 2018. By examining editorial coverage in both English and Urdu publications, the study examines the role of the press in either resolving or aggravating civil-military conflicts. Findings reveal that English papers contributed more to the aggravation of tensions between civilian and military institutions, with 40.08pc of editorials falling into the conflict aggravation category. Meanwhile, only 20.33pc of Urdu editorials were found to exacerbate tensions. On the flip side, a significant portion of editorials in both languages focused on conflict resolution, emphasizing better civil-military relations. The study also highlights the distinct framing of civil-military relations between English and Urdu editorials, suggesting language choice influences media portrayals of these conflicts. Interestingly, the research found no significant difference in coverage based on political party tenures (2008 to 2013) and (2013- 2018).

This research explores how leading English newspapers “Dawn”, and the Urdu newspaper “Jang” covered the judicial proceedings of political corruption cases in the light of Agenda Setting and Framing theories. News stories on the front and back pages and editorials of these two newspapers for two years (December 1, 206 to December 1, 2018) were selected. Corruption Cases (Panama gate case, Ephedrine case, Al- Azizia steel mill, Ashiana Iqbal Scam, Saaf Pani Case, Paragon housing society case, Fake Bank Accounts, and Nandipur case) were taken for data collection. The researcher used the Content Analysis method for gathering data. The Result indicates that Daily Dawn and Daily Jung covered judicial proceedings of mega political corruption cases differently. The findings reveal that Daily Dawn blamed all sides for corruption while Daily Jung blamed state institutions. The view of Daily Dawn in this regard is Objective, while the idea of Daily Jung is Subjective. The researcher suggested that the dailies should play a neutral role, and the content of dailies should be critical despite being absurd or baseless. Saraiki language is remarkably similar to two languages, namely Punjabi and Sindhi. Saraiki has different dialects and each dialect is representative of the region where it is spoken. This paper used the Urdu WordNet (Zafar, Mahmood, Shams & Hussain, 2014) as the basis for the formation of Saraiki WordNet. Urdu WordNet (Zafar et al., 2014) was created by UET Lahore and is based on Princeton WordNet (Miller, 1990). Dictionaries or lughats and literary sources, such as poetry, fiction, as well as non-literary sources, such as newspapers of Saraiki language, were used to extract data. Additionally, Urdu word senses were mapped onto Saraiki word senses. The method used in this study was mapping, while the expansion approach was used in the mapping process. Abstract:
According to research, the careless use of words in news coverage on child abuse has been brought to light. It was discovered that the language used in the crime story has a significant impact on reducing the severity of the crime and, as a result, has a substantial impact on how the readers perceive the nature of such crimes. The purpose of this research was to conduct a detailed investigation on how incidences of child abuse are reported in Pakistani media. Its primary emphasis is on understanding how news articles about child abuse are framed and promoted in the media. The reports of child sexual abuse that appeared in four daily newspapers (two English and two Urdu) between January 2016 and January 2018 were studied for the frames and language used to convey the events. A summary of the results was presented in the form of graphs and tables. To get an accurate count, we surveyed a total of 2718 people across both English-language and Urdu-language newspapers. According to this study, a total of 706 cases of child sexual abuse were reported in Lahore during the years (2016-2010) and 355 cases of CSA (Child Sexual Abuse) were reported in Lahore during the years (2010-2010). How the newspapers covered the news about child abuse did and does have a sound impact in underlining the importance of this matter on both the governmental and public scale. Sensitized coverage is problematic because it tends to portray child abuse more as a political issue than as a grim reality, affecting everyone across society. It is time to strictly implement anti-child abuse laws so that crimes against children could be effectively prevented.

Abstract This article explores the (contested) concept of political representation in Urdu during the colonial period to address “deceptive familiarities” and highlight multilingual and transnational influences on contemporary Indian Muslim claims. Drawing on official documents, letters, speeches, and newspapers from the late 1850s to 1919, it argues that the “politics of presence”—or descriptive representation—of “Old Party” leaders stemmed from their aristocratic concept of representation as trusteeship (wakālat). Despite changes in terminology, the concept was only challenged in the 1910s by the “Young Party” and by the embracing of democratic values. Conceptual change was then materialized by the appropriation of the Persian numā’indagī in Urdu—a term that might have consecutively accredited descriptive claims and the use of religious symbols in election campaigns.

Abstract:
Religion and the print media are two powerful motivators and sources of meaning, information and culture, and their relationship has been there seen since 19th century with the advent of industrial revolution. This research aims to analyze the portrayal of Sufism in the print media by investigating features of Sufi news stories of Urdu newspapers. For this purpose, this study applied qualitative approach to investigate news writings of national newspapers published from the city of saints, Multan. To provide a comprehensive overview, this study has analyzed news stories printed on the occasions of death anniversaries of prolific Sufi saints in four leading newspapers, Jang, Nawa-i-Waqt, Express and Khabrain, to contribute to the contemporary studies of religion and the print media. Probing the dynamics of religious communication, the study found the holy sketch of Sufi saints that portrayed them as great Muslim and spiritual mentors, and a heart of love and religious harmony. Their path and ideologies were recognized as the sources of inspiration for eternal success. The newspaper writings stated that Sufis are the treasures of the divine grace, wisdom and spiritual knowledge whose teachings address the love of God and Prophet Muhammad (SAW), the concept of piety, humbleness, pardon, the uncertainty of the world, and optimism. This research study examined the scenario of media as propaganda tool keeping in view the news reportage of the Panama issue as well as editorial coverage in Urdu print media. The study investigated the situation of whether the Urdu print media remained unbiased during reportage and editorial coverage of the big corruption scandal or it was used as a propaganda tool for the psychological warfare of the political arena. The paper assessed the position of factual and non-factual reportage and framed news reportage on the country's game-changer phenomenon. The study might be helpful to understand the scenario of news reportage on big corruption issues in the Urdu Print world of Pakistan. The results presented the outlines behind the framed news coverage, the picture of alteration into non-factual news, ignoring the facts and figures, and just focusing on the statements. The study also presented the view of meandering policies between reportage and editorials. It also indicated the changing policy regarding news reportage in terms of editorials and exposed the view of smearing position regarding ethical lees of news coverage. The research aims to see as to how identity discourse of national dallies contributes to the process of national integration by analyzing newspapers’ coverage of ethnic issues in the communally-battered Karachi. For the purpose, two major Urdu and English newspapers in Jang and Dawn published in 2007, 2008 and 2009 are selected for textual analysis; with the May 12, 2007 ethnic carnage being in spotlight. The findings are a mixed bag containing both positives and negatives. Apart from increased realization in discourse of both dailies that ethnicity is a problem, Dawn has got no place for nationalistic rhetoric based on one Islamic identity which may have positive implications for national integration. Nonetheless, Jang, as per the findings, is yet to wean itself off the nationalistic rhetoric.

Abstract:
The current study is an exploratory study of Pakistan's print media to understand its role in the promotion of Human rights as their promotion is the basic duty of every state as per the United Nations agenda. It is the content analysis of four national dailies, both Urdu and English. Study finds out that there is no significant difference among both types of papers in publishing news regarding Human Rights. But Urdu papers published more news about Human Rights as compare to English Dailies. Both type of newspapers mostly published news about loss & damages and the statements. Pakistani press is not conscious about the United Nations Agenda of "Promotion of Human Rights is the responsibility of the states" and publishes the news about incidents objectively. Professional journalists should differentiate between the “Human right journalism and human wrong journalism".

Abstract:
The present research is an attempt to explore the discourses of political cartoons published in Pakistani Urdu and English newspapers representing the war against terror impacts on Pakistan’s economy. Newspapers’ linguistic and semiotic representations of war against terror impacts on Pakistan’s economy are ideologically loaded and employed in the construction and deconstruction of the realities of post 9/11 scenario in a desired way. The research uses multimodal critical discourse approach (Machin, 2007) along with Van Leeuwen’s framework for recontextualisation (2008) and Fairclough’s (2003) framework for visual and linguistic analyses of the political cartoons to explore the hidden ideologies. The visual and linguistic analyses of the political cartoons pay careful attention to how discourses are chosen and then represented visually and linguistically to promote particular interests and ideologies that shape public perception of the reality.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to examine climate and environment news articles in two widely-read newspapers in Pakistan, Jang and Dawn, and to identify how these articles are framed using formal-stylistic approaches such as episodic and thematic framing. The goal of the research was to determine whether the print media in Pakistan is contributing to climate literacy through the framing of climate and environment news stories. The study put forward two hypotheses: H1: Climate and environment-related news coverage in Pakistani print media is usually episodic rather than thematic. H2: The way news stories of climate and environment are framed in Pakistani print media, does not enhance climate literacy. The research employed qualitative frame analysis to examine, choose, evaluate, and scrutinize news frames based on episodic and thematic framing. The study investigated how print media covered news stories about climate and environment over a period of two years (2018-19), which were selected because they coincided with significant climate change events that were of great importance for media analysis. To conduct the frame analysis, the researcher evaluated a total of 1,460 newspapers that were published between January 01, 2018 and December 31, 2019. The entire population of newspapers was included in the sample, which consisted of N=694 for Dawn and N=622 for Daily Jang. The study focused on news articles that were published in different sections of each newspaper, such as the front, back, national, and international pages, and that were related to climate or environmental events, either directly or indirectly. The unit of analysis for the research was individual news articles that were published between January 01, 2018 and December 31, 2019. The study discovered that the predominant framing approach employed in both English and Urdu print media (specifically Dawn and Jang newspapers) is episodic, with 87.4% in Dawn and 98.6% in Jang. Nevertheless, Dawn's usage of the thematic framing approach constitutes 12.6% while Jang's usage is merely 1.4%. The most dominant themes coded under episodic framing approach during the selected time period were reports on adverse impacts of climate and environment disasters and political activities of ministers and other government officials with regards to climate and environmental concerns. Such news articles do not provide any context of climate change and fail to enhance climate literacy. The investigation found that both English and Urdu print media, specifically the Dawn and Jang newspapers, primarily used the episodic framing approach, which accounted for 87.4% of Dawn's coverage and 98.6% of Jang's coverage. However, Dawn also utilized thematic framing in 12.6% of its coverage, while Jang only used it in 1.4% of its coverage. The most common themes under the episodic framing approach during the selected time period were news reports about the harmful effects of climate and environmental disasters and the actions of government officials and ministers in relation to climate and environmental issues. However, these news stories lacked any context of climate change and did not contribute to enhancing climate literacy.
