Summary Objective: To assess the management of traumatic urethral ruptures using a systematic attempt at urethral catheterisation. Methods: Eleven cats that had been diagnosed with a traumatic urethral rupture over a five- year period were included in this study. Rupture was assessed by positive-contrast retrograde urethrography. An attempt was made to manage these ruptures by placing an indwelling urethral catheter. Results: The placement of an indwelling urethral catheter, could be performed in 10 out of 11 cats, which indicated a partial rupture. In one cat, catheterisation was not possible

When erect, the albuginea layer stretches so far until its thickness reaches approximately 0.25 – 0.5 mm, compared with a 2 mm thick when flaccid. Fracture of the penis, or rupture of the corpus c avernosum is an uncommon injury, but probably under-reported entity. Only approximately 180 cases have been reported in the literature. Penile N fracture with urethral injury is even more uncommon, accounting for approximately 10 to 20% of the cases reported. Early reports on this injury suggest conservative therapy as the choice of treatment. Recent reports emphasize immediate surgical repair to prevent late sequelae of injury, especially those associated with urethral rupture. We review 5 cases with evaluation, treatment and follow-up. Background: Penile fracture is a urological emergency that occurs following a traumatic rupture of the tunica albuginea. Patients experience an audible ‘pop’ and immediate detumescence during sexual activity, followed by pain, swelling and ecchymosis. It is uncommon for patients to present without these typical clinical findings. Case Presentation: This case report describes a 33-year-old male with an atypical penile fracture and associated urethral injury. He reported mild pain as his penis buckled against his partner’s thigh during sexual intercourse and a sudden detumescence. Examination wa

Although penile fracture is a rare case, it is a well-described urologic emergency. It results from the rupture of the tunica albuginea of corpora cavernosa by blunt strain that commonly mandates immediate surgical exploration. Urethral injury may also accompany penile fracture. An ideal anamnesis and a special physical examination were determinant to achieve a correct diagnosis. It is usually diagnosed based on clinical examination, but ultrasonography can be very helpful in diagnosis. The treatment is based on the presence of associated urethral injury. ABSTRACT Urinary continence depends on two factors the presence of an intact and strong internal urethral sphincter (IUS); and on an acquired behavior, gained by learning and training in early childhood, how to maintain a high alpha-sympathetic tone at the IUS keeping it closed all the time until there is a need. The IUS is a cylinder that extends from the urinary bladder neck to the urogenital diaphragm. It is composed of a strong collagen sheet with muscle fibers that intermingle with the collagen in the middle of the cylinder's thickness. The strong collagen sheet gives the IUS the high wal

Introduction: Urinary peritonitis is a rare event that can occur most often in congenital malformation of posterior urethral valves (PUVs) due to bladder rupture or upper urinary tract. This malformation is most common in male newborns. The prognosis depends on the degree of oligohydramnios and precocity of installation with which posterior urethral valve is always associated. It is a factor that affects significantly the intrauterine development of the lungs and the severity of kidney impairment. Nowadays, diagnosis is prenatally possible, which leads to early intrauterine treatment with urin

Bladder rupture in the absence of trauma (spontaneous bladder rupture) is a rare but life-threatening phenomenon, commonly associated with pelvic malignancy1,2 and postvaginal delivery.3 In children, case reports of spontaneous bladder rupture are most often idiopathic or associated with congenital genitourinary malformations (e.g., posterior urethral valve) and bladder augmentation surgery.4 Since bladder rupture often presents with acute abdominal pain, the diagnosis can be missed, leading to delayed treatment and poor outcomes.
