Abstract:

Abstract:
The end of the Manila Galleon was a highly influential event for East Asian economy. The activities of the then declining Spanish Royal Philippine Company were deeply affected by such event: the Company was deprived, mainly in its factories in Calcutta and Canton, of one of its most important assets, namely the access to Latin American silver. Thus, the Company’s employees redirected their private activities towards the then booming opium business, with the financial support of Manila investors. This study identifies and analyses these activities, which are in the roots of what later became Jardine, Matheson & Co., and places them in the context of the European trade in Asia, to which the Spanish undoubtedly made a very important contribution in an key period of the opium economy and modern China historical development.

Dietrich, Muriel. Thesis, Montpellier 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011MON20063/document.

Abstract:
Host specialization and host-race formation may be key processes in maintaining and generating diversity within parasite populations. The objective of this thesis was to analyze these processes in the seabird tick Ixodes uriae, a common and widely distributed ectoparasite that exploits a great diversity of seabird host species, to better understand the relative role of host-related constraints and geographic factors in its evolution and diversification. I addressed this question using different approaches, including population genetic and phylogeographic analyses, morphometry and field experimentation. Results show that the spatial factor is a key component in shaping the diversity of I. uriae, as four geographical genetically isolated groups exist within the global distribution of this parasite. The formation of host races is also a general process in the evolution of I. uriae, but has evolved to different degrees in different geographical regions. Host preference in the tick, along with mechanical or physiological host-related constraints (e.g., beak morphology, blood digestion, immune response) are likely involved in the evolution of I. uriae host races. Overall, results fall in line with the geographic mosaic theory of evolution that predicts that the outcome of species interactions can vary across geographic landscapes, highlighting the role played by ecological characteristics of the host in the diversification of I. uriae. Given results to date, host specialization may be a common process in tick systems and thus may have strong epidemiological and evolutionary implications for the pathogens that they transmit

Abstract:
Ticks are vectors for a larger number of viruses and bacteria than all other arthropod taxa, including mosquitoes. In Europe is it foremost Borrelia spirochetes and the Flavivirus Tick-borne Encephalitis virus that cause disease in humans. In this study, the tick species Ixodes uriae has been studied. I. uriae have a circumpolar distribution in both hemisphere and can be found both in Arctic and Antarctica. I collected ticks from Magellanic penguins in south Chile and analyzed them to see if they carry Borrelia spirochetes or Flavivirus. Totally were 218 ticks collected from 165 controlled penguins. All ticks were collected from adult penguins and the parasitizing ticks were all found in the auditory meatus which is a new phenomena compared to earlier studies. Both Borrelia spirochetes and Flavivirus were found in the collected ticks using PCR techniques. This is an interesting result since not much research has been performed in this geographical area before. Until date there is only one species of Borrelia (Borrelia garinii) found in I. uriae on the southern hemisphere and new Flavivirus is regularly found around the world.  Unfortunately we have not been able to determine species of the Borrelia spirochetes or Flavivirus so far but this work will be continued.

Gylfe, Åsa. "Role of birds in the biology of Lyme disease Borrelia." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för molekylärbiologi (Medicinska fakulteten), 2001. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-118928.

Full text
Abstract:
Lyme disease is a tick-transmitted illness caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.), a group of spirochetes with at least three human pathogenic species, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. afzelii and B. garinii. These spirochetes cycle between vertebrate reservoirs, mainly rodents, and ixodid ticks. Both terrestrial birds and seabirds can be infected with B. burgdorferi s.l. but the function of birds as reservoirs is largely unknown, even though they are potentially important epidemiologically due to their ability to carry ectoparasites and microorganisms over long distances. This thesis describes the role of birds in Lyme disease Borrelia biology in general and Borrelia ecology and epidemiology in particular. B. burgdorferi s.l. has previously been detected in the seabird tick Ixodes uriae and an enzootic Borrelia cycle distinct from terrestrial Borrelia cycles has been described. In this study B. garinii was isolated from the proposed seabird reservoirs and the tick I. uriae infesting them. The strains isolated did not show evident differences from human pathogenic B. garinii strains, indeed 7/8 strains had an ospC allele associated with Borrelia causing disseminated Lyme disease. Antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. were detected in people frequently bitten by I. uriae. Thus the marine enzootic Borrelia cycle may be a risk for humans, either by direct transfer of the spirochete from /. uriae or via introduction of Borrelia into a terrestrial enzootic Borrelia cycle. In order to investigate the role of passerine (Passeriformes) birds as amplification hosts in the terrestrial Borrelia cycle, experimental infections of canary finches (Serinus canaria) and redwing thrushes (Turdus iliacus) were carried out. The result showed that B. burgdorferi s.l. can persist for several months in passerine birds and the infection in redwing thrushes can be reactivated in response to migration. Thus, birds may be more infectious to ticks during their migration and therefore important long-range disseminators of B. burgdorferi s.l. Migration in birds is associated with elevated stress hormones that in turn can cause reactivation of latent infections. Lyme disease in humans could perhaps be activated when the immune response is modulated by stress. Herein I describe a patient with a stress activated latent Borrelia infection, which supports this hypothesis. The seabird tick I. uriae has a circumpolar distribution in both the northern and southern hemispheres and in this study identical B. garinii flagellin gene (flaB) sequences were detected in I. uriae from these hemispheres, indicating a transequatorial transport of B. garinii. Parsimony analysis of I. uriae ITS2 and 16S rDNA sequences suggested that northern and southern I. uriae might be reproductively separated. Therefore passive transport of infected ticks between the polar regions is unlikely and instead seabirds probably carry an active Borrelia infection during their migration. In conclusion, this work shows that migrating seabirds and passerine birds probably are important for the long-range dispersal of B. burgdorferi s.l., and that this mechanism of dispersal could be important for the distribution of human Lyme disease.

Abstract:
This essay performs an analysis of the highly controversial and rarely studied personal diaries of this Irish diplomat and traveler. Within the Black Diaries it is possible to find the description of bodies in intense suffering, of dismemberments, torture, and death, alongside descriptions of beautiful near-perfect bodies that provide the narrator with moments of intense pleasure. These are, to a certain extent, the same bodies; bodies of indigenous peoples living in the Casa Arana’s reign of terror. Reconciling the simultaneity of bodily pain and pleasure in this writing is one of the centers of Uriarte’s analysis, which links the Black Diaries to the more traditional utopian discourse about Amazonia of which the myths of El Dorado ––and the violence the promise of untapped, virginal riches provoked––are a significant part.
