Abstract:

Abstract:

A revision of daily egg production estimation methods, with application to Atlanto-Iberian sardine. 2. Spatially and environmentally explicit estimates of egg production. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: . A spatially and environmentally explicit egg production model is developed to accommodate a number of assumptions about the relationship between egg production and mortality and associated environmental variables. The general model was tested under different assumptions for Atlanto-Iberian sardine. It provides a flexible estimator of egg production, in which a range of assumptions and hypotheses can be tested in a structured manner within a well-defined statistical framework. Application of the model to Atlanto-Iberian sardine increased the precision of the egg production time-series, and allowed improvements to be made in understanding the spatio-temporal variability in egg production, as well as implications for ecology and stock assessment.

Abstract Bernal, M., Stratoudakis, Y., Wood, S., Ibaibarriaga, L., Uriarte, A., Valdés, L., and Borchers, D. 2011. A revision of daily egg production estimation methods, with application to Atlanto-Iberian sardine. 1. Daily spawning synchronicity and estimates of egg mortality. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: . Assumptions of daily spawning synchronicity and estimation of egg mortality for Atlanto-Iberian sardine are revised in the context of daily estimators of egg production. An extensive database of ichthyoplankton surveys from 1985 to 2008, aggregated at different levels, is used, a set of mortality models is derived, and a comparison among them is carried out using standard statistical techniques. Analysis of the database shows Atlanto-Iberian sardine to be a late-evening spawner, in agreement with previous knowledge, but suggests a lengthier daily period of spawning. Comparison among the set of mortality models used suggests that estimates of mortality from single surveys for Atlanto-Iberian sardine are often unreliable, and that the mean estimates obtained after aggregating data from various years are statistically significant, more robust, and in line with existing information gathered from the literature.

The unplanned and unequal expansion of Dentistry courses in Brazil from 1856 to 2020. Brazilian Oral Research, 35.” Imagem 1 Imagem referente a parte do texto compartilhado no BJIHS. Imagem 2 Imagem referente a ficha catalográfica compartilhada no BJIHS.

Abstract:
We propose a stochastic model for the development of gastrointestinal nematode infection in growing lambs under the assumption that nonhomogeneous Poisson processes govern the acquisition of parasites, the parasite-induced host mortality, the natural (no parasite-induced) host mortality and the death of parasites within the host. By means of considering a number of age-dependent birth and death processes with killing, we analyse the impact of grazing strategies that are defined in terms of an intervention instant t 0 , which might imply a move of the host to safe pasture and/or anthelmintic treatment. The efficacy and cost of each grazing strategy are defined in terms of the transient probabilities of the underlying stochastic processes, which are computed by means of Strang–Marchuk splitting techniques. Our model, calibrated with empirical data from Uriarte et al and Nasreen et al., regarding the seasonal presence of nematodes on pasture in temperate zones and anthelmintic efficacy, supports the use of dose-and-move strategies in temperate zones during summer and provides stochastic criteria for selecting the exact optimum time instant t 0 when these strategies should be applied.

Abstract:

Abstract Morote, E., Olivar, M. P., Villate, F., and Uriarte, I. 2010. A comparison of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus) larvae feeding in the Northwest Mediterranean: influence of prey availability and ontogeny. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 67: 897–908. The feeding ecology of the larvae of the two most important small pelagic species in the western Mediterranean, anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus), is investigated. Samples were collected in early summer (anchovy) and autumn (sardine). Composition of the diet and prey selectivity were compared over the course of ontogeny in anchovy (2.7–14.5 mm standard length, SL) and sardine (5.5–15.8 mm SL) larvae. Anchovy larvae begin feeding on prey items >150 µm at smaller sizes than sardine larvae, and the diets of both species are based mainly on copepod nauplii and postnauplii. Seasonal differences in the composition of the plankton influenced the contributions of prey types to the diets of the two species, e.g. the cladoceran Evadne spp. in anchovy and the tintinnid Codonellopsis sp. in sardine. Although copepod eggs are generally present in the diets of larval clupeoids, they were not major components of the diets of the species considered here. Despite morphological similarity, selection patterns were different between the species and changed through ontogeny.

Abstract Ibaibarriaga, L., Fernández, C., Uriarte, A., and Roel, B. A. 2008. A two-stage biomass dynamic model for Bay of Biscay anchovy: a Bayesian approach. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 65: 191–205. A two-stage biomass-based state-space model with stochastic recruitment processes and deterministic dynamics was developed for the Bay of Biscay anchovy population. It is fitted in a Bayesian context with posterior computations carried out using Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques. The model is tested first on a simulated dataset and the effects of different modelling assumptions and of missing values evaluated. Then, it is applied to a real historical series of commercial catch and survey data from 1987 to 2006. Results are compared with those obtained by the standard assessment model for this stock, integrated catch-at-age analysis (ICA). From the posterior distribution of biomass in the latest year (2006), the distribution of unexploited biomass in 2007 can be derived assuming the distribution of recruitment in 2007 to be a mixture of the posterior distributions of past series recruitment. Hence, the effect of different catch options on future biomass levels can be quantified in probabilistic terms. Finally, directions for possible further improvements are indicated.

Abstract Boyra, G., Martínez, U., Cotano, U., Santos, M., Irigoien, X., and Uriarte, A. 2013. Acoustic surveys for juvenile anchovy in the Bay of Biscay: abundance estimate as an indicator of the next year's recruitment and spatial distribution patterns. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 70: . A series of acoustic surveys (JUVENA) began in 2003 targeting juvenile anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. A specific methodology was designed for mapping and estimating juvenile abundance annually, four months after the spawning season. After eight years of the survey, a consistent picture of the spatial pattern of the juvenile anchovy has emerged. Juveniles show a vertical and horizontal distribution pattern that depends on size. The younger individuals are found isolated from other species in waters closer to the surface, mainly off the shelf within the mid-southern region of the bay. The largest juveniles are usually found deeper and closer to the shore in the company of adult anchovy and other pelagic species. In these eight years, the survey has covered a wide range of juvenile abundances, and the estimates show a significant positive relationship between the juvenile biomasses and the one-year-old recruits of the following year. This demonstrates that the JUVENA index provides an early indication of the strength of next year's recruitment to the fishery and can therefore be used to improve the management advice for the fishery of this short-lived species.

Abstract:
Abstract Ibaibarriaga, L., Fernández, C., and Uriarte, A. 2011. Gaining information from commercial catch for a Bayesian two-stage biomass dynamic model: application to Bay of Biscay anchovy. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1435–1446. A two-stage biomass dynamic model for Bay of Biscay anchovy is presented. Compared with the model currently applied by ICES for the assessment of that stock, the new model separates the growth and natural mortality processes and allows them to differ by age class. Stochastic equations involving the observed weights by age class in surveys are incorporated to provide information on growth rates. The fishing process is modelled separating fishing mortality into year and age-class effects in each semester, and observation equations are introduced for total catch and catch proportion by age class (in biomass) by semester. The model is first tested on simulated data, then applied to real data for the years 1987–2008. Although the results are affected by survey catchability and natural mortality assumptions, estimates of population trends, when expressed in relation to the value in a given year, are robust. The new model has significantly more parameters, requiring longer computational time for its fitting, which is done in a Bayesian context. However, it does allow the testing of different assumptions on natural mortality, which is of special interest after the recent fishery closure, and estimating new parameters, which could provide further insight on stock and fleet dynamics.

Abstract:

Abstract Andonegi, E., Fernandes, J. A., Quincoces, I., Irigoien, X., Uriarte, A., Pérez, A., Howell, D., and Stefánsson, G. 2011. The potential use of a Gadget model to predict stock responses to climate change in combination with Bayesian networks: the case of Bay of Biscay anchovy. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1257–1269. The European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) is a short-lived pelagic species distributed in Atlantic European waters, with the Bay of Biscay being one of the main centres of abundance. Because it is a short-lived species, the state of the stock is determined largely by incoming recruitment. Recruitment is highly variable and depends on a variety of factors, such as the size of the spawning stock and environmental conditions in the area. The use of a coupled model that could serve to predict the evolution of the anchovy stock in the short, medium, and long term under several fishing-pressure scenarios and given climate scenarios is demonstrated. This coupled model consists of a Gadget (Globally Applicable Disaggregated General Ecosystem Toolbox) model that was used to analyse the status of the Bay of Biscay anchovy population and to simulate future scenarios based on the estimated recruitment levels, combined with a probabilistic Bayesian network model for recruitment estimation based on machine-learning methods and using climatic indices as potential forecasting factors. The results indicate that certain combinations of medium to high fishing pressure and adverse environmental conditions could force the stock outside its biological reference boundaries.

Abstract:

Geographic variability of sardine dynamics in the Iberian Biscay region. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 495–508. The spatio-temporal variability in the distribution, demographic structure, recruitment, and mortality of sardine within the Iberian Biscay region is described using area-disaggregated data collected during acoustic surveys and at ports since the mid-1980s. Multiple regression models were used to describe log numbers-at-age obtained annually in ten areas covered by three surveys to test the existence of geographic differences in selectivity-at-age, recruitment strength, and mortality and to infer plausible migration routes. Within Iberian waters, sardine biomass was mainly concentrated off western Portugal and the Gulf of Cadiz. In the Bay of Biscay, biomass levels were comparable with those off western Portugal. Recruitment was localized in a few areas (northern Portugal and the Gulf of Cadiz and Bay of Biscay), intermingling with areas dominated by older fish. Recruitment was generally asynchronous among areas, although some recruitment peaks were noticeable across wider regions. Spatial patterns related to strong and weak year classes and year-class slopes were also noted. Clearly distinct dynamics were not evidenced within the Atlanto–Iberian sardine stock area, but the validity of the northern limit was questioned by the connection between sardine dynamics in the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Sea. The results provided some evidence consistent with the hypothesis of sardine movement from recruiting grounds to areas farther along the coast as they grow.

Abstract:
Abstract 22 Background: Screening followed by treatment has been a key contributor to the reduction of cervical cancer in industrialized countries and is critical to reduce its burden in low-resource countries. Screening technologies that are appropriate for low-resource settings have advanced considerably; however, treatment technologies have lagged. Treatment methods that are used in developing countries must be low cost, effective, and adaptable for areas with limited infrastructure and health care providers. This study was performed to determine the depth of necrosis in cervical tissue achieved with three treatment devices: conventional cryotherapy with CO2, the CryoPen (CryoPen, Corpus Christi, TX) adapted for low-resource settings, and the thermocoagulator. Methods: One hundred twenty-five women who were scheduled for hysterectomy for indications other than cervical pathology were randomly assigned to one of five treatment arms: single-freeze arms and double-freeze arms for both conventional cryotherapy and the adapted CryoPen, and a single application of thermoablation at 100° C for 40 seconds. Treatment was administered 12 to 24 hours before hysterectomy. Depth of necrosis in cervical specimens was measured by pathologists who were blinded to the treatment modality. Results: A total of 119 women have been enrolled to date, and 114 specimens have been reviewed. Mean depth of necrosis is 5.1 mm (0.9 to 8.5 mm) for single-freeze cryotherapy, 5.6 mm (3.8 to 10.5 mm) for double-freeze cryotherapy, 4.9 mm (3.5 to 8.5 mm) for single-freeze adapted CryoPen; 4.5 mm (3.0 to 7.3 mm) for double-freeze adapted CryoPen, and 3.7 mm (1.9 to 5.5 mm) for the thermoablation ( Table 1 ). Conclusion: The depths of necrosis achieved with the three different ablation modalities are competitive and surpass the targeted depth of 3.5 mm established a priori. Results thus far have demonstrated that devices that are optimized for use in low-resource settings can be as effective as conventional cryotherapy in treating cervical intraepithelial neoplasia. Abstract:
Background:The Hemophagocytic Syndrome (HPS) had a mortality rate between 20% and 90%. The mortality of HPS secondary to autoimmune diseases (AID) is lower than hemato-oncological diseases (HOD). In general, the HOD, thrombocytopenia, age, and a prolongation of prothrombin are considered to be an adverse prognostic factor.(1)Objectives:To describe and identify differences between patients who survived and did not survive to HPS during hospital admission to a tertiary hospital between 2005 and 2019.Methods:This is a retrospective observational study. All patients who met the diagnostic criteria for LHH were included, or who presented haemophagocytic cells in the bone marrow biopsy, or who had diagnosis of HPS in the hospital discharge report.(2) Demographic, clinical, analytical, etiological, underlying disorder and prognosis variables were collected. Continuous variables are described with the mean or median according to the degree of normality. Kruskal Wallis, Fisher test and Mann-Whitney U test were used for the bivariate analysis, and also a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed. Results:Thirty patients with HPS were included. They were distributed in 5 subgroups (Table 1). Overall mortality was 43.3%, statistically significant higher in the HOD [8 patients (66.7%); p 0.029]. Also, they were divided into 2 groups (survivor vs. non-survivor; Table 2). In the multivariate model the age and INR prolongation were confirmed to be independently associated with the outcome of mortality.Table 1.Etiology of HPSEtiologyn = 30MortalityAID10n = 1 Systemic lupus erythematosus51 Adult Still’s Disease3No Rheumatoid arthritis1No Sclerosing Disease IgG41NoHOD12n = 8* Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma31 Myelodysplastic syndrome32 Acute leukemia33 Extranodal NK cell lymphoma11 Multiple Myeloma1No Probable lymphoproliferative process11Infectious diseases2n = 1 Pneumocystis carinii in patient with H.I.V.11 Campylobacter yeyuni1NoGlyoblastoma multiforme with temozolomida1n = 0HPS without defined aetiology53HIV: Human Immunodeficiency Virus, NK: Natural Killer. *p = 0,029Table 2.Characteristics and differences between survivor and non-survivor groupsTotalNon-survivorsurvivorn301317p<0,05Age55,5±18,36858,2-74,54034-570,043Women1653,3%761,5%947,1%1,00Comorbidities (≥ 2)516,7%215,4%317,6%1,000Hospital stay35,520-60,82915,5-39138-170,563Splenomegaly1653,3%753,8%952,9%1,000Hepatomegaly1033,3%538,5%529,4%0,705Hb (g/dL)7,16,4-7,9710%6,2-7,87,16,6-7,80,094Pt (x109/L)13 5005 000-52 50016 00011 000-44 00012 0005 000-99 0000,281Pt≤ 100 0002583,3%13100%1270,6%0,052Leu (x109/L)1 250238-3 1531 300150-3 9401 400200-3 3400,457Neu (x109/L)6150-1 5501 29020-3 3006500-1 4000,805Fb (mg/dL) (n=24)171111-358167,00106-253169,00103-4510,796Fer (ng/mL) (n=28)15 3305 434-38 28429 0635 728-74 60413 2258 287-28 7290,108Tg (mmol/L)341226-438254,00184-382471,00341-6040,053GOT (U/L)13977,5-406,3133,00101-513179,00101-512,50,483GPT (U/L)16246-389109,0041-333199,0099-2980,198INR (n=29)1,51,1-1,92,11,2-3,71,51,1-1,60,028Hb: Hemoglobin, Pt: platelets, Leu: leukocytes, Neu: neutrophils, Fb: fibrinogen, Fer: ferritin, Tg: triglycerides, GOT: aspartate aminotransferase, GPT: alanine aminotransferaseConclusion:The HOD presented higher mortality. Abstract:
Background:The mortality in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) varies largely across different countries most probably due to social, healthcare and ethnic differences. Objectives:To analyze the causes and identify predictive factors of mortality of SLE in Spain in the present century. Methods:We performed a cross-sectional and retrospective study analyzing data from the RELESSER cohort (Spanish Registry of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus of the Spanish Society of Rheumatology). We included all patients diagnosed with SLE since the year 2000 and recorded sociodemographic, clinical and serological variables, comorbidities and treatments, as well as indicators of disease activity, damage and severity. The characteristics of the deceased patients were compared with those of the survivors, and variables with clinical significance or statistical significance were grouped into multivariate models to determine which ones were independently associated with the outcome of the disease. Results:A total of 2004 patients were included, 88.6% female, the mean age at diagnosis was 38.3 (± 15.3) years, with a mean delay in diagnosis of 28.9 (± 52.6) months. Up to 2.84% of the individuals had died. The leading cause of death was SLE activity (n=16), followed by infections (n=14), vascular events (n=7) and cancer (n=6). The mean age of death was 54.68 (± 20.13) years, and neither age, sex nor delay in diagnosis was independently associated with mortality. The presence of nephritis, depression, severe infections, organ damage (SLICC/ACR DI) or disease activity (SLEDAI), as well as the use of cyclophosphamide, rituximab or high doses of corticosteroids, were predictors of mortality in our cohort. Antimalarial treatment and skin manifestations were linked to improved survival. Conclusion:In the RELESSER cohort, clinical factors, co-morbidities, as well as therapeutic attitudes were associated with a significant increase in mortality in SLE. Interestingly, depression was independently associated to mortality. The activity of the disease and infections continue to be the main causes of death at the beginning of the 21st century amongst our patients.Disclosure of Interests:Clara Moriano: None declared, Jaime Calvo Grant/research support from: Lilly, UCB, Consultant of: Abbvie, Jansen, Celgene, Iñigo Rua-Figueroa: None declared, Elvira Diez Alvarez: None declared, Cristina Bermúdez: None declared, Francisco J López-Longo Grant/research support from: AbbVie and GSK, Speakers bureau: AbbVie, Actelion, Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK, MSD, Pfizer, Roche, and UCB Pharma, María Galindo-Izquierdo: None declared, Alejandro Olive: None declared, Eva Tomero Muriel: None declared, Antonio Fernandez-Nebro: None declared, Mercedes Freire González: None declared, Olaia Fernández- Berrizbeitia: None declared, Ana Pérez Gómez: None declared, Esther Uriarte Isacelaya: None declared, Carlos Marras Fernandez Cid: None declared, Carlos A. Chilbal Island is a small, remote, uninhabited government-protected island in southwestern Jeollanam Province, Republic of Korea (ROK). Ticks were collected from nest soil and litter of the Ancient Murrelet, Synthliboramphus antiquus, using Tullgren funnels. A total of 4 Ixodes ticks (3 male Ixodes uriae and 1 female Ixodes signatus) were collected. The principal hosts of I. uriae are pelagic birds that have a largely circumpolar distribution. Ixodes signatus parasitizes other migratory birds in coastal areas of western North America and eastern Asia. This is the first report of I. uriae from the ROK.

Abstract:
This report emerges from the experience of a thematic seminar developed in the discipline of Art and Aesthetics in Education of the Graduate Program in Education, Master’s in Education of the Regional University of Blumenau/Santa Catarina, Brazil. The proposal elaborated as part of the activities of the curricular component of the discipline was organized by the academics and guided by the professor who teaches the discipline. The purpose of the seminar was to awaken the senses and to reflect on the role of the teacher as a provocateur of the senses. The seminar was attended by 17 students, who are also teachers from different areas, enrolled in the discipline of Art and Aesthetics in Education. The activities had as theoretical basis Duarte Júnior (2000) and happened in five moments: the anesthesia in which we live: critical analysis of the daily life; reconnecting nature; concealing the sight and awakening the touch; awakening the sensitive; and reflections. The experience promoted by the thematic seminar contributed significantly to the reflection on the current life, and how numb we are, to the (re)discovery of the senses and the sensitive education. As the academics who participated in the seminar are also teachers, they were provoked by the mediators to promote moments of sensitive education with their students. In view of this, we expect a resonance of the proposed activities beyond the moment of the seminar. Palavras-chave: Educação (do) sensível, Estética, Sentidos. Keywords: Sensitive education, Aesthetics, Senses.ReferencesALVES, Rubem.
