Many inpatients in U.S. hospitals acquire an hospital-acquired infection (HAI), the majority of which can be attributed to an indwelling urinary catheter. The use of urinary catheters is a common practice within the acute care setting although the placement comes with risk. Improper catheter placement or a lack of care and maintenance can increase patient morbidity and mortality, as well as increase financial strain for the hospital. The technological development of imaging equipment has allowed for the improvement of pre-existing procedures and for the creation of new options in treatment, mainly in the application of urinary treatment, by introducing minimally invasive techniques. Hydronephrosis often originates from the partial or complete obstruction of the urine flow and it can affect one or both kidneys, causing dilation and progressive functional impairment. When renal function is evidenced by exams such as the excretory urography or scintigraphy, it becomes vital to recover the kidney with hydronephrosis, especiall

The aim of this study was to compare the abilities of various urease-positive species to encrust and block catheters with crystalline biofllm. Experiments were performed in laboratory models of the catheterised bladder infected with a range of urease- producing species. The results of these experiments allowed the classification of the bacteria into three groups: rapid encrusters, slow encrusters and non-encrusters. Rapid encrusters (Pr. mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris and Providencia rettgeri) were able to raise the urinary pH to 8 - 9 and cause catheter blockage

Abstract:
One concern for medical professionals and women experiencing cesarean deliveries is the use of indwelling urinary catheters, which is associated with a delay in first void time, slower ambulation time, increased discomfort, longer hospital stays, and an increased risk for urinary tract infections. The purpose of this project was to determine if a practice change regarding the use of urinary catheters among pregnant women decreases the number of women receiving a catheter prior to having a cesarean section in a small community hospital.
