Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is a health problem that has great impact on the emotional well-being and increases with age. Urinary incontinence requires higher degree of care givers time. It is the nurse‟s responsibilities to investigate and prescribe incontinence aids. Nurses have to have knowledge in diagnostics, nursing and treatment methods that is used on patients with urinary incontinence. The aim was to illuminate nursing measures that can be used in the care of women over 65 years with urinary incontinence and outcomes of care measures. Method: A literature review was made and 16 scientific articles were included. The results showed measures that was grouped into six categories; "nursing staff education", "patient information", "investigation and assessment", "physical training", "behaviour training" and "incontinence aids". Discussion: The highest obstacle to decrease the urine leakage is lack of knowledge and commitment from patients and care givers. With small, simple measures such as exercise, regular toileting and reduced fluid intake can the urine leakage and pad use decrease in both numbers and size. Conclusion: There are measures that can be used before pads are prescribed and all measures resulted in decreased urine leakage.

Full textChanges in quality of life as a result of urine incontinence are a common phenomenon. Despite all the modern treatments there are a lot of women receiving negative consequences. These consequences affect both the body and psyche. The aim of the study is to illuminate women experience in living with urine incontinence and their experiences of care and treatment. The method used for this study to systematic search relevant literature was Willman’s methodology. Ten scientific articles were found in databases such as PubMed and Cinahl. The result contain four categories; to live with an imposed taboo illness, to feel unclean and live in shame, to restrict your day-to-day and sexual life, meeting and attitude among nursing staff. Women’s situation is affected enormously, however, the experience of urine incontinence is very much individual. Therefore it is desirable that nurses identify and support those women who are affected to reach a better balance in day-to-day life

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is a global public health problem and most common among women. From a societal perspective, urinary incontinence is seen as a hidden problem as many women refrain from seeking care, which can cause a suffering which in turn can affect the quality of life Aim: The purpose of this literature review was to describe how urinary incontinence affected women's quality of life. Method: A literature review based on 15 scientific articles, of which 13 qualitative and two quantitative scientific studies. Result: Urinary incontinence adversely affected women's quality of life. Five clear categories that affected women's quality of life emerged: Restrictions on daily activities, Impact on social life, Stress on cohabitation, Feelings of fear and anxiety and Feelings of shame and guilt. Conclusion: Many women with urinary incontinence feel shame, guilt and anxiety because of this, few are seeking care for their discomfort. The nurse has an important role in creating a positive nursing experience in order to get the women to feel confident in the healthcare and dare to seek help. Increasing knowledge about urinary incontinence in society can make it feel safer to talk about this subject.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is a common condition that has major impact on one person’s well-being and daily life. Nurses meet in their daily work both men and women suffering from urinary incontinence. Research on this public health problem is limited and the area is relatively unexplored, especially on men's experiences. Purpose: To examine men and women's experiences of living with urinary incontinence and their perceptions of support from relatives and care staff. Method: The method used was a qualitative interview study with semi-structured interview guide. Seven men and women were interviewed who had sought treatment for urinary incontinence. A qualitative content analysis after Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was used to analyze and interpret the interview texts. Results: Individuals experienced feelings of shame, embarrassment and frustration which limited their daily lives because they had to hide the symptoms from their surroundings, give up activities, and perceived loss of control. They used different strategies such as planning, use of aids and an accepting approach to manage and simplify their situation. The importance of being listened to, obtain knowledge and information from health care was highlighted. Furthermore, relatives played the part as a major support for the individuals. Conclusion: The findings suggest that an open climate can be established by paying attention to and actively ask about symptoms from the urinary tracts. This may contribute to an increased understanding of the patient's individual experiences, which allows a patient-centered care and treatment were the person can feel understood and experience participation.

Full textUrinary incontinence is one of our major public health problems. Women are affected more often than men, but after 75 years of age, it is equally common in both sexes. The purpose of this study was to examine how men's experiences of living with urinary incontinence are highlighted in the literature. The method was a literature review based on ten scientific articles, both qualitative and quantitative. During the process different perspectives became apparent, i e psychological, practical and social. The results revealed that the men's quality of life was adversely affected. They organized their everyday living around their urinary incontinence, and developed strategies in order to live as normally as possible. From a practical perspective, the men would always make sure they knew where the nearest toilet was. They also adjusted their fluid intake and went to the bathroom as a preventive measure. Psychologically the men felt ashamed and often kept their incontinence a secret from their surrounding family and friends. Socially they experienced problems within their sexlife and in the relationship with their partner. The study showed that there is a need for guidelines and treatment strategies in this field.Keyword: experience, living with, men, quality of life, urinary incontinence.

Full textThe aim of this study is to explore how elder women experience urinary incontinence (UI). UI is common in elder women. The number of old incontinent women is supposed to increase considerably until 2050. It is known that the severity of UI symptoms usually increases at old age. Although UI might be a serious disorder, many women seem to tolerate and accept it surprisingly well. In more severe cases, UI can have impact on sleep and cause tiredness and depression which might have impact on family life. UI can also be the cause of isolation since the patient does not want to expose her hygienic problems. UI means a costly expense for the society. There are several methods to treat UI: new habits, pelvic training, medicines and surgery. A drawback in this study is that the topic is narrow and that relevant literature is rare. The result of this study is that every woman has own unique experience of UI. In the discussion the authors related their results to theoretical model of life rooms described by Professor Katie Eriksson in Finland.

Full textThe purpose of the study is to identify urinary incontinence work with quality registry Senior Alerts urinary incontinence module in two municipalities over a fixed period January to June 2014 and from January to June 2015. The method was to use the registry data that is later held by the Depositary of the Senior Alert. The result showed that more than half of the individuals in risk assessments were conducted on municipal G had any form of urinary incontinence in both periods. The municipality M proportion was even higher, about 80%. Underlying causes of urinary incontinence was found to be the aspects mentioned in the Senior Alerts module except constipation problems and loss of sensation in the genital area that is not revealed as clearly as the other aspects. Using Senior Alert, a pattern emerged, and it is possible to provide individually tailored measures for people with incontinence problems. With simple measures, can patients with feces regime, toilet assistance, testing of incontinence aids can the scale of Senior Alert be helpful. The scale demonstrates what assistance may be needed for patients, health professionals then perform the action.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence causes involuntary urinary leakage and is a public health problem in Sweden. It is a condition that primarily affects women and the elderly. Aim: To describe women's experience of living with urinary inconti- nence. Method: Literature review, where qualitative articles were analyzed accor- ding to Friberg's five-step model and compiled into a result. Data searches were con- ducted in Medline and CINAHL, where eleven articles were selected. Result: Consi- sts of three main themes; powerlessness, exclusion and acceptance that emerged from the following subthemes: lost control, a limited life, a sense of shame, negative meetings in health care, adaptation and a part of life. Women experience urinary incontinence as a limitation in everyday life. Women accept their life situation and do not talk openly about urinary incontinence because it is felt as shameful and ta- boo-coated. Women also find it easier to talk about their urinary incontinence if the healthcare brings up and talks about urinary incontinence. Conclusion: There is a need for increased knowledge and understanding in society and in the care of women with urinary incontinence. Since women do not speak openly about their urinary in- continence, it is important to conduct further research on the interaction between healthcare and women with urinary incontinence.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is a public health problem with an increasing prevelence as the population ages. Urinary incontinence occurs at any age, but prevalence is highest in older women. Symptoms affect woman's health negatively and cause physical and psychosocial suffering. Objective: To examine women's experience living with urinary incontinence and its implications on daily life. Method: A literary of 10 original studies using qualitative method. Results: Three identified themes: Knowledge gaps: Perceptions of symptoms and Normalization of symptoms, Emotional aspects: Self perceptions and emotions and Fears, Coping with everyday life: Coping and lifestyle adaption and Sexual and intimate relations. Results show women had insufficient knowledge about urinary incontinence and experienced it inappropriate to discuss. Women developed strategies to adapt and cope with everyday life. Conclusions: Urinary incontinence causes stigma that creates limitations in everyday life and great mental strain from which many women suffer in silence. Few women seek care as the subject is perceived as shameful and taboo. Instead women adopt coping strategies to manage the situation. A knowledge gap surrounding etiology, symptoms and treatment can be discerned within the patient group who pledge for greater focus and clarity from health care personnel. Clinical importance: Nurses have an important role in provision of treatment and need to be better at finding patients at an early stage and provide accurate information about urinary incontinence. The study intends to give greater understanding of psychosocial effects of living with urinary incontinence.

Full textBackground: In Sweden, there are about 10 000 men per year who suffer from prostate cancer and of these, about 3000 of them undergo radical prostatectomy. Common complications that occur after surgery are erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence, affecting the quality of life and suffering can occur. The nurse has a significant role to play in promoting quality of life and relieving suffering. Purpose: This study aimed to describe how men experience their sexual health and urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy. Method: An analysis of narratives with a qualitative approach of four autobiographies. Results: The results consist of five themes: Feelings of losing control, feeling of sexual resignation, to dare to be open about feelings, when lust and erection fail and feeling hopefulness. Sexual health and urinary incontinence affects men’s quality of life after the surgery. They have a feeling of fear that they will remain impotent and incontinent for therest of their lives. Conclusion: It turns out that men do not talk about sexual health and urinary incontinence, leading to feelings of lonliness with their problems. By raising awareness around the area, it can promote men’s quality of life and alleviate suffering. Through this study, the authors hope that health care professionals will gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to live with these complications and how they will best be dealt with in contact with healthcare. Furthermore, that information is an important aspect to consider.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is a common illness among women that has a negative effect on the mental health. The illness affects the everyday life and raise emotions such as dejection and anxiety. The most common risk factors for urinary incontinence are advanced age and post-delivery. Despite sufficient treatment options women do not seek help. Aim: To describe women’s experiences of living with urinary incontinence. Method: General literature study based on ten scientific articles with a qualitative approach. Findings: In order to control urinary leakage women planned the daily activities, adjusting to the unforeseeable nature of the disease. Urinary leakage interfered with their sex life and created feelings of shame and guilt. Urinary incontinence also hampered the ability to practice religion. Despite of the problems that urinary incontinence brought women did not see the disease as a legitimate problem and therefore did not seek care. Women who had sought help had experiences of not being taken seriously. Conclusion: Creating a positive experience of health care was of great importance to make women gain trust for the care system and therefore seek help. Urinary incontinence created feelings of shame and guilt which should be considered by caregivers when facing these women. In order to help these women knowledge is required about experiences of living with urinary incontinence. Relevance to clinical practice: Understanding how women experience living with urinary incontinence can bring caregivers required knowledge for nursing these women in the best way possible. Nurses should ask patients direct questions about urinary incontinence in order to legitimize it and gain knowledge about the disease impact on life.

Full textUrinary incontinence is a global problem that affects more than 50 million people and is three times more common among women than in men. Urinary incontinence means reduced quality of life by affecting women physically, psychologically, sexually and socially. Nurses encounter women with urinary incontinence and in order to provide high quality care and promote health, knowledge is needed on how women experience urinary incontinence. The purpose of this study was to describe women's experiences of living with urinary incontinence. The method was a literature review consisting of 13 articles. The result showed that women's experiences of urinary incontinence were bothersome but that some women used strategies to cope with everyday life. Four categories were prominent: the experience of loss of control, the experience of urinary incontinence as a taboo subject, the experience of limitations in everyday life, the experience of dealing with everyday life. Although urinary incontinence is common, there are still deficiencies in the health care of urinary incontinent women. There is a need for nurses to become better at identifying and informing women living with urinary incontinence. More knowledge about urinary incontinence is needed in nursing education and among health professionals.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence is defined as involuntary leakage of urine and is considered to be a normal part of ageing, both from a nurse- and a patient perspective. Urinary incontinence is most frequent in older women, but also occurs in younger women. Registered nurses consider that their knowledge about urinary incontinence needs to be increased. Objective: To describe women’s experiences of living with urinary incontinence. Method: A literature study was conducted according to Evans (2002) analyzing method by analyzing ten scientific articles. Result: The women perceived their incontinence as taboo and therefore chose not to talk about their condition. They were constantly concerned about someone noticing their urinary incontinence. They experienced a loss of spontaneity and a limited life. The women experienced powerlessness when being unable to prevent urinary leakage. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence was associated with significant psychological stress and these women needed support from their surroundings. Further research is needed to determine how women with urinary incontinence perceive their relationship with the nurse. This because the nurse has an important role when it comes to supporting these women in their situation. Keywords: Acceptance, Alienation, Limitation, Powerlessness, Taboo.

Full textUrinary incontinence is defined as a sudden and unintended need to deplenish the bladder which can result in urinary leakage. There are different types of urinary incontinence and among the most common are stress-, urge- and mixed urinary incontinence. During a pregnancy it is not rare to suffer from urinary incontinence and most common is stress urinary incontinence. Pelvic floor muscle exercise is a treatment frequently used for urinary incontinence. The easiest exercise is to perform pelvic floor contractions which intends to contract the pelvic floor muscles and enclose the vaginal, urethral and rectal opening. When performing contractions no side effects have been reported, which makes pelvic floor contractions a safe method of treatment. The purpose of this literature study is to examine whether exercise can be used as a treatment for urinary incontinence affected by pregnancy. Pubmed was the database used to address this aim. Six articles have been examined whereof two was follow uparticles. Three of four studies that have been examined during this report shows that pelvic floor muscle exercise have a reducing effect on urinary incontinence (p<0,05). However the reducing effect wears off after ending the treatment. The relative risk for the results of the studies was calculated to 1,52, 1,15, 1,60 och 2,25. Values >1 shows an effect of the treatment but values <2 should be interpretend as a small effect. More extensive studies with a higher number of participants is needed to ensure the positive effect of pelvic floor muscle exercise as a treatment for urinary incontinence after pregnancy.

Full textBackground: Urinary incontinence (UI) is an involuntary urinary leakage that every fourth woman suffers during her lifetime. Many women suffer from urinary incontinence in silence where the condition is perceived as private and a taboo. The survey identification of the disease is of great interest to the nurses because urinary incontinence is one of the unnoticed and stigmatizing diseases in Sweden. Objective: The purpose of the literature study was to elucidate how women in reproductive age with symptoms of urinary incontinence experience their daily lives and in which way the nurses can provide support and care. Method: The literature study is based on 12 scientific articles with a qualitative approach. The literature search was performed in the databases Cinahl and PubMed. The selected articles were analysed with qualitative content analysis. Results: Urinary incontinence constrains women's everyday lives and provokes feelings of shame and fear. Most women living with urinary incontinence refrain from seeking care because the condition is experienced privately and as difficult to speak about. The women accepted urinary incontinence and the limitations it imposed as part of their life. The condition becomes a handicap for the active woman who needs to adapt the activities that previously she was able to perform. Conclusion: Urinary incontinence is a common inconvenience among women, and it has a negative impact to their quality of life. Women find it difficult to talk openly about their inconvenience because they feel that they are not receiving the help and support they need. Women need support from their environment and the healthcare because urinary incontinence is a mental restrain. Further research is needed on women with urinary incontinence and their experiences as well as the importance of the treatment received by the nurse´s response.

Full textUrinary incontinence is a broad health issue which causes an extensive social impact and consequences for many individuals. Urinary incontinence is often accompanied by feelings of shame and by social taboo. It has a negative impact on quality of life. Women tend to ignore the symptoms and refrain from seeking medical help because urinary leakage is generally not perceived as an illness. The purpose of this study is to determine how a district nurse can identify women who suffer from urinary incontinence. Detection is crucial in regaining a beneficial health status, both on an individual level as well as on a national health care level. The method applied in this study is a systematically integrated study of literature. Results state a need for information and education, as well as cooperation between multiple health care disciplines and through screening in order to identify women who suffer from urinary incontinence. A broader information flow, guidance and advice from primary care givers is essential in order to decrease the level of taboo. Future research should be aimed at prevention, screening, evaluation and treatment of urinary incontinence. A multi-disciplinary work ethic is essential as urinary incontinence is often not the primary reason for medical help seeking, neither is every potentially affected woman by definition being seen by a district nurse. Prevention on a primary care level combined with the education of patients is and will remain a crucial factor as urinary incontinence prevalence increases with age. The phenomenon of a generally increasing overall ageing population within the western world should be taken into account.
