Full textBackground: indwelling urinary catheter is a treatment method that is used for several different diseases. Complications that patients may be exposed to are catheter blockage, urinary tract infection and urinary leakage. Nurses look at patients' use of urinary catheters from different angles where it is perceived as an aid or something that causes harm. Aim: The purpose of this literature study is to illustrate how patients with indwelling urinary catheter experience the use as well as insertion and replacement. Method: the degree project has been conducted as a literature study with a qualitative approach. After the collection of the final ten articles from CINAHL and PubMed, quality review and data analysis of the collected material was carried out. Results: the ten studies highlighted four main themes: The meeting with the healthcare, Feelings Related to the Urinary Catheter, Aid from the Environment and The urinary catheters effect on everyday life. The result also generated seven subthemes that are reported under the different main themes. Patients highlighted that there were deficiencies in the treatment from healthcare professionals and that emphasis was placed on good accessibility of care. Patients in the studies looked at their urinary catheters from both positive and negative angles. The urinary catheters function, discomfort and possible complications were seen to have an effect on how the patient looked at their urinary catheter. Conversation and exposure of the urinary catheter caused discomfort to the patients and led to some limitation in everyday life. Conversations about sexuality related to catheter use were something that some patients found as an area needing improvement in healthcare. Conclusion: In order to reduce complications and suffering, it is important to strive for good communication and information. These are two key concepts that are of great importance to the patient's experience of use, replacement and insertion of indwelling urinary catheter and increase the basis for a person-centered care.

Full textBackground: It is important for nurses to create understanding about the impact aurinary catheter can have on people’s lives to be able to provide as good care aspossible. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of patients livingwith a urinary catheter. Method: The study was conducted through a structuredliterature review with a systematic search. An analysis according to Friberg’sinstructions was performed, based on eight qualitative articles. Results: Four themeswere identified based on different aspects of how patients experienced their lives witha urinary catheter: Possibilities and limitations in everyday life, Not having sufficientknowledge, Fear and discomfort as well as Self-image and relationships with others.Something that became clear was the importance of the patients’ experiencesregarding the introduction of the catheter and how that effected the rest of thepatients’ lives with it. Implication: For nurses, it is important to remember that thepatients must live with the catheter for the rest of their lives. For further research, itmay be interesting to research how patients deal with the problems that arise and hownurses can inform, support and prepare the patients for a life with the catheter.

Full textBackground: Indwelling catheters are common in health care and there are multiple causes why patients get them prescribed. The most common reasons for the prescription is of difficulties and or diseases in the urinary tracts. Indwelling catheters are also an cause of complications like infections, pain or other catheter problems. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the patient's experience of living with an indwelling catheter. Method: A literature review was conducted. Ten scientific articles were analyzed, interpreted, nine were qualitative and one was quantitative and then categorized into two themes. The articles were found from the databases CINAHL Complete, PubMed and Psyc Info. Results: The result presents two themes which represents the differences between the negative and the positive experiences from the patients. The result described that urinary catheter became an obstacle in the everyday life and were often the reason to urinary tract infection, anxiety, discomfort under leakage or blockage. The patients self-image and sexuality could sometimes change since some of the patients did not experienced themselves as the person they used to be before they got the urinary catheter. Some patients experienced a positive change in their life because they felt that the catheters contributed them with a sense of security and freedom. Discussion: The method's strengths and weaknesses are processed in the discussion. The result discussed articles and selected parts of Katie Eriksson nursing theory that highlights the suffering.

Full textABSTRACT Background Urinary catheterization is a common treatment in health care and there are several reasons why catheter is indicated. It is often due to urinary retention and residual urine volume after urination. Urinary catheterization can cause complications, such as urinary tract infections and leakage, which can cause suffering. The nurse's task is to relieve suffering through, among other things, person-centered and safe care. Understanding how catheterization can affect the individuals who are in need of it, and it is therefore important for the nurses’ professional practice. Aim The aim of this study was to describe patients experiences related to urinary catheterization and living with urinary catheter. Method A non-systematic literature review was conducted and based on 16 scientific articles, with both qualitative and quantitative design. Included articles were searched in the databases PubMed and CINAHL using appropriate keywords. With the Sophiahemmet university's quality framework the articles were quality examined and then the content was analyzed to be grouped into three general categories; 'A daily life with a urinary catheter', 'quality of life' and 'the patient's relationship to health care'. Results The general categories are divided into seven subcategories where patients' experiences related to catheterization of the urinary tract are described. Complications such as urinary tract infection, urinary leakage and pressure ulcers; the deficient conduct and approach of nurses; difficulties in everyday life; Lack of information and influence on sexual activity are aspects that can affect the experience according to patients. Conclusions This literature review describes how various factors affect the experience of catheterization and living with urinary catheters, and what the different methods of catheterization have for the impact on the experience. Factors such as complications with pain, urinary leakage and urinary tract infections; altered self-image and affected sexual activity; lack of information and response from caregivers as well as estimated quality of life had significance for the patient’s experience and possible suffering. With these experiences, health care can identify inadequate handling with persons and medical devices, and initiate improvement work with the aim of strengthening the patients’ perceived quality of life related to urinary catheterization.

Full textBackground: The urinary catheter design has not changed since the 1930's. This is thus that complications related to the urinary catheter can be serious and are common. To prevent these complications the catheter users need to use self-care. For self-care to be sufficient the catheter users need good knowledge about urinary catheters. It is the nurse's task to pass on this information.Aim: To describe the experience of living with an indwelling urinary catheter.Method: A literature study with qualitative studies. 11 articles went through the quality review process to the result. Fribergs 5-steps model was used to analyze the data.Result: To live with a urinary catheter can mean a huge relief and enable more freedom. Thus it can also mean the opposite, that the urinary catheter can revent people because it involves a lot of anxiety, time consuming care and affects the body image. Peoples relationships to others in their surroundings has a huge influence on the experience of living with a urinary catheter. Conclusion: Many people with urinary catheter experience a constant anxiety over possible problems. Here is a gap between what is known and offered from the health services and the catheter users experience and requests. The health services are not aware of the real experience of the catheter users. This needs more research to investigate the ability of improvement in the health system.

Full textSAMMANFATTNING
