AbstractInvestigation into the depositional and post-depositional processes of atmospheric NH4+ on Ürümqi glacier No. 1 (UG1), China, was implemented within the Program for Glacier Processes Investigation (PGPI) campaign. Aerosol and surface snow samples were collected concurrently on a weekly basis from March 2004 to March 2005 in the UG1 accumulation zone at the headwaters of the Ürümqi river, eastern Tien Shan. All samples were analyzed for NH4+ and other chemical species. This paper investigates the seasonal variations of NH4+. A significant linear relationship (R2 = 0.70, N = 21, P < 0

Abstract. Nitrogen-containing organic compounds (NOCs) are abundant and important aerosol components deeply involved in the global nitrogen cycle. However, the sources and formation processes of NOCs remain largely unknown, particularly in the city (Ürümqi, China) farthest from the ocean worldwide. Here, NOCs in PM2.5 collected in Ürümqi over a 1-year period were characterized by ultra-high-resolution mass spectrometry. The abundance of CHON compounds (mainly oxygen-poor unsaturated aliphatic-like species) in the positive ion mode was higher in the warm period than in the cold period, which wa

AbstractThe temporal and spatial variations of mass balance on different timescales were analyzed to identify their response to climate change using long-term observed mass-balance data covering the period 1959–2002 at Ürümqi glacier No. 1 at the headwaters of the Ürümqi river, Tien Shan, China. The results show that the accumulated glacier mass balance has decreased by 9599 mm w.e., which is equivalent to about 10 m mean thickness reduction. The negative mass balance has been accentuated in recent years, with a mean mass balance during the period 1997–2002 of –739.6 mm a−1. The glacier mass b

The basal velocity in the tunnel gradually decreases from the back wall towards the entrance, with a compressive strain rate ranging from −0.579 to −5.739 × 10−2 a−1. When the surface of this snow cover begins to melt in April, the meltwater is not immediately transformed into streamflow. Several processes are responsible for the five to 15 days of delay in streamflow generation: refreezing in the snow cover itself, creation of a basal ice layer at the snow-soil interface, growth of superimposed ice on the glaciers of the basin, ice formation in stream channels and restorati

ABSTRACT: Tahir Hamut Izgil's recent memoir, Waiting to Be Arrested at Night, brings to life a cast of poets and intellectuals who used to meet under the cover of darkness, against the backdrop of mass detentions in Ürümqi, the capital of Xinjiang province. In his 2018 poem "Somewhere Else," Izgil, who escaped China, writes with the exile's keen longing: "Of course / I too can only stare / for a moment into the distance."

This chapter concludes that city films set in urban centres of western China engage with, respond to and reimagine China’s complex and heterogeneous urbanisation and modernisation in an increasingly globalised world. The four cinematic urban centres examined in this book configure a space of the subaltern, the marginalised and the dominated. This configuration defies the glamorised success stories of China’s economic boost, questions the dominance of political and capital power imposed on the designation and transformation of cityscape and urban life, and asserts the value of cultural and soci
