This paper seeks to examine the dynamic causal relations between the two major financial assets, stock prices of the US and South Africa and the rand/US$ exchange rate. The study uses a mixed bag of time series approaches such as cointegration, Granger causality, impulse response functions and forecasting error variance decompositions. The paper identifies a bi-directional causality from the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock price index to the rand/US$ exchange rate in the Granger sense. It was also found that the Standard & Poor’s stock price index accounts for a significant portion of the

Abstract:
The fragmented nature of the US equities exchange landscape has given rise to structural inefficiencies, creating the potential for conflicts of interest between market participants. The introduction of the Investors Exchange offers the opportunity to evaluate market quality across exchanges with varying fee structures. The chapter studies four dimensions of market quality—liquidity, execution costs, price discovery, and market stability—and examines structural mechanics responsible for disparities in execution quality. A trend is observed in venue stratification by fee structure: maker-taker exchanges dominate the US equities trading landscape despite greater adverse selection, less stability around executions, significantly longer queues at the inside, and a lower probability of execution in aggregate. This suggests that access fees and rebates perpetuate economic incentives misaligned with the tenets of best execution, and may promote activity detrimental to market quality. The chapter employs a publicly available dataset (Daily TAQ) to facilitate replication of our metrics.

Abstract:
Even after barriers to financial flows began to be removed in the 1970s equity investment continued to be conducted on a national basis, because of political, currency, and liquidity risks. There was no equivalent among equities of those bonds that attracted all international investors, such as US government debt; a currency such as the US$ that underpinned global financial transactions; or highly liquid derivative contracts that could be used to hedge risk. However, in 1980s equities acquired global appeal and cross-border investment expanded rapidly, though remaining dwarfed by domestic holdings. Nevertheless, a major obstacle to the emergence of a global equity market remained in the form of the institutional nature of the exchanges in which trading took place. Attempts at reform had already taken place in the USA in the 1970s but that left the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq as an effective duopoly. The institutional nature of the equity market frustrated the ambitions of the megabanks and the interdealer brokers as they wanted direct access to the trading system. That barrier to change was finally breached in the 1980s when membership of London Stock Exchange was opened up to these global banks and trading moved online. This event was known as Big Bang and had implications around the world, but especially in Western Europe, because of London’s importance as an international financial centre. Combined with the ending of exchange controls Big Bang made the global equity market much more competitive, forcing change upon reluctant exchanges and protective regulators around the world.

Blockchain is one of the growing technologies used for financial management systems. Financial data must be kept secure otherwise it can create a huge loss. So, whenever security features or technologies are developed must keep financial security as a priority. Stock market management is another area of finance sector that works on two concepts, that is, minimize the risk and maximize the profit. In this chapter, the authors discuss how blockchain technology is used for stock market analysis. Mainly blockchain will help us to make optimal stock exchanges through automation and decentralization. Stock market across the globe is rapidly using blockchain technology for the market transaction. Some of the country is still preparing themselves to use the blockchain technology. This technology offers huge potential for tracing securities lending, margin financing, and surveillance of system risk.

Abstract:
The interrelationship between stock and commodity markets has been an issue of interest for both the academia and practitioners in the field of investment and wealth management. Traditionally, commodity has been a popular avenue for diversification in a mixed portfolio. However, this works well as long as there is little or no correlation between the two markets. This chapter presents an empirical investigation of the daily movement of stock and commodity index of two different countries to throw some light on the interrelationship between stock and commodity market. The uniqueness of this study lies in the choice of markets as also the methodology. The authors have chosen a developed market, viz., the US market, and an emerging market, viz., the Indian market. This study uses the major stock and commodity indices respectively for both countries for a period of three years. For analysis the authors have used the tools from nonlinear dynamics like recurrence analysis, power spectrum analysis, and delay based cross-correlation function. The investigation revealed that the dynamics of the time path of daily movement of Indian stock and commodity exchanges are much similar in nature while those of the US market are quite different. This chapter also models the respective time series using Geometric Brownian Motion and finds that the Indian data set performed much better than the US ones. This has a strong impact on strategy for designing mixed portfolios in Indian market.

Abstract:
I love universities. You just have to look at the posters stuck to walls and notice- boards. They add up to a picture of the good life—invitations to join sports teams, orchestras, social projects, new drama productions, and charity fund-raising stunts; together with public intellectuals giving guest lectures, performances by indie bands, and of course the occasional student protest against some injustice. I was on the receiving end of a few student protests myself over the years when I was minister for universities and science. Sometimes they were quite unpleasant, but usually well-intentioned young people just did not accept what I was trying to do or why. One incident captured what is special about university, even in those unpropitious circumstances. A group of perhaps forty protesters at Southampton University were shouting denunciations of the Coalition’s fees policy. I went over and tried to talk to them but they could not hear my replies so they lent me their loud-hailer to hear my argument better. Then I gave it back so they could broadcast their reply. They returned it to me again and so we carried on the exchanges. Their anger could not suppress their curiosity. It was really rather moving. The university is the institution which, above all, fosters and sustains such intellectual curiosity and openness. The university is the place where everything we think we know can be challenged and where new ideas are generated and transmitted to future generations so they will be better educated than us. A belief in the possibility of progress is one of the exceptional values of Western civilization and universities embody it because they operate at the intellectual frontier. It is why the university is one of the great institutions of the modern world—as important as the democratic legislature, an independent judiciary, or the joint stock company. The first part of the book is about how the university has grown to such importance and why it works the way it does. A medieval concept, the independent corporation, has proved to be extraordinarily well suited to one of the most important eighty-five or so major institutions which already existed in Europe five hundred years ago and still exist now, seventy of them are universities.

India opened its stock market to foreign investors in September 1992 and has received portfolio investment from foreigners in the form of foreign institutional investment in equities and other markets including derivatives. It has emerged as one of the most influential groups to play a critical role in the overall performance of the Indian economy. The liberalization of FII flows into the Indian capital market since 1993 has had a significant impact on the economy. With increased volatility in exchange rate and to mitigate the risk arising out of excess volatility, currency futures were introduced in India in 2008, which is considered a second important structural change. This chapter examines the impact of the Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) on the exchange rate and analyzes the relationship between FII and Indian Rupee-US Dollar exchange rates.

Abstract:
The role of unavoidable space between heat exchangers and stack inside a thermoacoustic standing wave generator is investigated. A two-dimensional Low Mach number viscous and heat conducting flow model of the active thermoacoustic cell, comprising heater and cooler separated by a stack made of parallel conducting plates, is described. Three different models of heat exchangers are implemented and compared. Ideal heat exchangers consist of a fluid zone with imposed temperature. The other two models are made up of stacks of horizontal plates, either with specified wall temperatures, in one model

The improvement of the thermal coupling between the stack of a thermoacoustic refrigerator and the heat exchangers is necessary to achieve high-efficiency and stable operation. Heat transport by the thermoacoustic effect depends on both the velocity and temperature fields. Inside the stack, it can be described by the linear theory of thermoacoustics. However, departures from linear behaviours are expected near the edges of the stack and in the heat-exchangers due to the generation of vorticity and temperature harmonics. The present work focuses on the experimental characterization of temperatu

High operating temperature of SOFCs can make internal reforming effective as well as inhibit CO poison over the Ni-based anode. Therefore, SOFCs give us a wide range of fuel choice. In this study, diesel known as a very tough fuel for fuel cell applications was chosen as the SOFC fuel. Our final goal is to develop the 1kWe diesel-powered SOFC systems for residential power generation purpose. Before the system construction, we have drawn a few engineering and scientific problems from the bench tests of reformer and stack. Most of all, coke formation in the reformer and stack was very serious. C

A relatively new form of alternative energy known as reverse electrodialysis (RED) appears to be one of the promising energy sources of the future. This technology harvests the energy stored in the salinity gradient between two different liquids, and converts it directly into electric power. This power is generated by pumping water through an array of alternating pairs of cation and anion exchange membranes called cells. An experimental system was designed and assembled with cells 61 cm × 16.5 cm. Along with having much larger dimensions than the prototype systems reported in the literature, t

Proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are becoming the center of attention as an alternative power source for automotive and stationary applications due to their ability to produce high power densities under rapid load changes. Even though a significant amount of research on PEMFCs has been conducted over the last few decades, the cost associated with platinum (Pt) catalyst remains a barrier for their commercialization. For instance, the US Department of Energy has a target to reduce the use of Pt in PEMFCs to 0.125 mg/cm2 or less, while maintaining rated stack power densities. A path t
