Abstract:
Purpose Martin’s Big Words: The Life of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr is a timeless book well-known among K-6 teachers, students, librarians and book-lovers throughout the USA. This multi-award winning picture book provides readers with insight into Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s life and the oppression and progress of African Americans before and during an era known as the modern US Civil Rights Movement (CRM). The biography outlines the period’s equity issues, and serves as a springboard for this upper elementary lesson. While Dr King played an iconic role, there were many other individuals involved in the CRM, most of whom students do not know. The purpose of this paper is to offer varying perspectives related to lesser known CRM leaders, protesters, advocates, perpetrators and bystanders. Design/methodology/approach Technology is incorporated through online research, videos and productions; thus, students actively engage in making connections to various individuals’ points of view, those both supportive and oppositional. Students conduct research while responding to higher-order, critical-thinking questions regarding groups and forces of the CRM. Then, they expand knowledge through jigsaw research activities by collecting information, responding to inquiry questions and presenting relevant evidence-based information about CRM contributors, perpetrators and bystanders. Findings This is a National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Notable Tradebook Lesson Plan. Originality/value This is a NCSS Notable Tradebook Lesson Plan.

Abstract:
The myth of a borderless world pillars of open markets – the USA and the UK – are wobbling, and China is positioning itself as globalization staunchest defender. But is a mass retreat from globalization really the right approach for companies in these uncertain times? Or short of packing up and returning home, should they focus on localization – that is producing or even innovating where they sell-as the strategy of choice? Recall that as recently as a decade ago, business leaders and politicians believed that the world and that global companies, unconstrained by countries borders, would soon dominate the world economy. Today’s turmoil calls for a more subtle reworking of multinationals’ strategies organizational structures, and approaches to societal engagement. Poland has already been a beneficent of EU funds. Actually Polish internal indebtedness is increasing and Poland will not be able to use EU funds in the future.

The authors would like to present the Polish issue of planning investments financed by EU funds, e.g. the project of the Pomeranian Metropolitan Railway. Construction of this railroad is the first successful project in Poland to build a new railroad since the transformation of the state system in 1989. The project was financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The decision to build the line and award the grant was made on the basis of a feasibility study. A key element of this document was the CBA analysis, which was carried out on the basis of the Blue Book for railway transport.

A narrow look at the economic aspects and the earlier underestimated costs of the investment caused that the investment is unfinished. The question should be asked is whether use of another method of economic analysis would help to complete this investment without the need for over a dozen years of staging investment expenditures? Difficulties with the economic efficiency account are similar to the barriers to the development of globalization.

Hubbard, Janie. "Dorothea Lange." Social Studies Research and Practice 14, no. 3 (2019): 281–89. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/ssrp-01-2019-0004.

Abstract:
Purpose Dorothea Lange was one of the first US documentary photographers, and she was empowered by the belief that seeing the effects of injustice, in photographs, could elicit social and political reform. She famously documented the plight of Dust Bowl migrants during the US. Great Depression and harsh difficulties endured by incarcerated Japanese Americans during the Second World War. Lange’s photographs brought suppressed issues of class and race to the surface, depicting those impacted by national tragedies into recognizable, honorable, determined individuals. By showing Americans how suffering and injustice look in real life, she stimulated empathy and compassion. This inquiry is not particularly about the Great Depression or Japanese Internment, though disciplinary concept lessons would certainly support students’ prior knowledge. This lesson focuses students’ attention on broader ideas regarding social justice and how social and political documentary photography transform people’s views about distressing problems, even today. Supporting questions are: How can deep analysis of photographs affect our thoughts and emotions about social issues? What is empathy? How can social documentary photography affect people’s emotions? Supporting questions guide students to answer the greater compelling question, How can visuals, such as photographs, impact social change? The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach This is an inquiry lesson plan based on a National Council for the Social Studies Notable Trade book for Young People award winner, Dorothea’s Eyes, written by Barb Rosenstock. Findings The paper is a lesson plan, which incorporates students’ analyses of primary sources and other research methods to engage the learner in understanding how Dorothea Lange helped change perspectives regarding the need for social and political reform. Though the story is historic, similar social justice topics still persist, worldwide, today. Originality/value Through inquiry and research, students begin to learn how social and political documentary photography began in the USA, and students create their own social documentaries. Though the US Great Depression and Japanese Internment are highly relevant within this lesson, the overall, greater message is about class, race, suffering and how to inspire empathy.

Dalrymple, Robert A. "PROCEEDINGS DEDICATION: Robert Dean." Coastal Engineering Proceedings, no. 35 (June 23, 2017): 3. http://dx.doi.org/10.9753/icce.v35.foreword.3.

Full text
Abstract:
This Proceedings is dedicated to Dr. Robert George Dean. For more than 12 years (1992-2004), Dr. Dean served as Chairman of the Coastal Engineering Research Council, the organization that is responsible for providing the coastal engineering profession with its most important conference, the ICCE. His motto was “the Coastal Engineering Research Council does one thing and we do it well”—ensuring that a high-quality conference is held every two years and that a proceedings is created as a record of the state of the art. We all can agree with that.

Dr. Dean was one of the most influential coastal engineers of this era. On the academic side, he educated a large number of masters and PhD students, many who have carried on his teachings in the field. He wrote or co-wrote several hundred articles and three books—Water Wave Mechanics for Engineers and Scientists, Beach Nourishment: Theory and Practice, and Coastal Processes with Engineering Implications. The first book, in print since 1984, provided to generations of coastal engineers the derivation of water wave mechanics from fluid mechanics and reflected some of his contributions to the field: such as wavemaker theory and the Stream Function wave theory. The second book (2003) provided a new rational basis for the design of beach nourishments from sand selection and beach profile to planform layout, while the third book (2004) provided a scientific bases for coastal engineering, including some of his novel work on sediment transport and tidal inlet hydraulics and stability.

He was born in Wyoming, USA, on November 1, 1930. His education included Long Beach City College and then UC Berkeley for the BS in Civil Engineering (1954), an MS in Physical Oceanography at Texas A&M (1956), and then the Doctor of Science (Civil Engineering) from MIT (1959). His professional career started in industry with five years at Chevron Research Corporation, when he developed the Stream Function theory for use in wave force calculations on offshore structures. He then became the chair of the Department of Coastal and Oceanographical Engineering at the University of Florida in 1966. For seven years (1975-1982) he served as Unidel Professor at the University of Delaware, where, among other things, he worked on equilibrium beach profiles, providing several scientific explanations and field verification of the Bruun beach profile. Then he returned to the University of Florida as a Graduate Research Professor until his retirement in 2003 as an Emeritus Graduate Research Professor (2003). Even in retirement he continued working in the field, often producing more than eight publications a year!

He was very active in consulting and service to the profession. He served on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Coastal Engineering Research Board, which provides advice to the Corps on coastal topics (1968-1980; 1993-1998). He served on six National Research Council (of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine) committees on such topics as sea level rise, coastal erosion, coastal nourishment, and Louisiana, and the Marine Board (beginning in 1981). As a Floridian, he worked as the Director of the Division of Beach and Shores of the State of Florida, working on such topics as the basis of implementing the State’s coastal setback line for development. He also was Chair of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association and a director of the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association.

Bob possessed a tremendous skill for examine a problem and recognizing the appropriate physics to apply to it. With this skill, he was able to bring new insights into beach profiles, alongshore sediment transport rates, beach nourishment guidelines, tidal inlet stability, wave theory, and a host of other topics. For this, he was recognized by the ASCE’s John G. Moffatt-Frank E. Nichol Harbor and Coastal Engineering Award (1987), the Gold Medal of the Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association (1987), the ASCE International Coastal Engineer Award (1983) and the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal by the Department of the Army (1981 and 2008) among others. In 1980, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.

For a man of his professional stature and accomplishment, Bob was just as happy talking with the top people in the field as newcomers. He treated them all with the same graciousness. Even when someone he was listening to was saying something scientifically wrong, Bob would ask polite questions, such as “would your solution satisfy conservation of energy?” or “I don’t understand where this term came from?” I know, because it happened to me on occasions.

Bob is survived by his wife Phyllis, his daughter Julie Dean Rosati (another contribution to coastal engineering), his son Tim, and five grandchildren.

Nunes, Andreia Filipa Rebelo. "Era uma vez... estereótipos de género nos livros infantis." Master's thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/15609.

Full text
Abstract:
The present research aimed to analyze gender stereotypes in the books awarded by SPA / RTP in the category of "Best Children and Youth Book" from 2010 to 2017, in a total of eight books. In addition, it was sought to inquire about the presence of gender issues in the criteria underlying the selection of books. For this purpose, an analysis grid with four dimensions was conceived: Technical Data Sheet; Gender representativeness; Gender and Language and Gender stereotypes and a joint interview was held with two members of the National Reading Plan (Plano Nacional de Leitura - PNL) team. As with other national and international studies, this research revealed a female underrepresentation - not to the level of authorship of the books, but of the female characters, well evident in their total absence as central characters. Gender inequalities can be perceived in the various dimensions, with emphasis on the dimensions related to hobbies, leisure time and household tasks / responsibilities, where rest and "doing nothing" periods of the male characters contrast with the cooking and cleaning chores associated with the female characters. However, the analysis of the books under study allows to verify the non-linearity of the representations and messages of gender, having found that the same book can alternate between stereotyped messages, messages that oppose the stereotype and messages promoting equality.

Abstract:
Chapter Six explores Smith's use of story outlines as the narrative anchors for his oral composition of the Book of Mormon. By reviewing the sketch outlines, or "skeletons," of stories in advance of his dictation sessions, Smith could use such outlines as a mental guide, which he expanded extemporaneously into fully developed narratives in the moment of delivery. The original Book of Mormon summary headings for internal books, chapters, and sections provide explicit examples of this method of oral composition. Smith dictated the outlines of stories before dictating the stories themselves, revealing his advance knowledge of the narrative shape and structure of his stories, which he expanded extemporaneously during dictation to his scribes. This chapter also challenges the apologetic claim that such outlines represent ancient colophons, along with exploring Smith's use of mnemonic cues and embedded outlines. Finally, based on internal and external evidence, the chapter argues that Smith was fully aware of the overall story structure of the Book of Mormon before he started dictating the work.

Betty Comden and Adolph Green’s last outing on a new Broadway show came in 1991, when they provided lyrics for The Will Rogers Follies. With a book by Peter Stone, music by Cy Coleman, and direction and choreography by Tommy Tune, the show earned them yet another Tony Award, and the original cast recording garnered a Grammy for them as well. After this they settled into semi-retirement, enjoying additional accolades, such as a Kennedy Center Honor. They didn’t stop working entirely though. They revised older works, most notably A Doll’s Life, and maintained active lives as performers until their deaths in 2002 and 2006, respectively.

During the early and middle part of the 1960s Betty Comden and Adolph Green were no longer splitting their time between working on shows for Broadway and movies in Hollywood, and as a result they were able to dedicate more time to their personal lives. And while they might have been spending time with the elite of New York’s society, they were not unaware of the issues facing the country. This informed a pair of stand-alone songs they penned with Jule Styne and Leonard Bernstein as well as their next musical, Hallelujah, Baby! Featuring a book by Arthur Laurents, the show chronicled the African-American experience during the first six decades of the twentieth century. Leslie Uggams was the star of what was ultimately an unconventional tuner that had music by Jule Styne and went on to win a Tony Award as best musical

Abstract:
In order to address current challenges in higher education, innovative teaching approaches have to be introduced. They can aid in increasing student motivation, their course involvement and engagement. At the same time, they can also boost students’ learning outcomes. Our previous research studied the impact of implementing a business simulation into a study course. We explored students’ knowledge acquisition and their future engagement, assessed after the introductory simulation. The study involved two demographic groups of students: IT oriented and business oriented. In both groups the use of business simulation resulted in positive outcomes, depicting the suitability of using a business simulation. Regardless of the rate of used gamification, we have to be aware of and address adequately existing challenges and risks, to avoid the negative consequences of gamification, which we define as overgamification. According to this, we identified and analysed the existing challenges and risks and proposed possible solutions used when implementing the business simulation game. Both research directions are presented in the paper, together with corresponding references and future work.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Petrarch's (1304–1374) own poetry in order to articulate what he achieved and how he used his sources. In returning to the source, the chapter reveals how good Petrarch's poems are and how much their excellence owes to his subtle and restrained exploitation of the tradition of his poetic predecessors. It begins by considering the advice which Petrarch gives scholars and writers about imitation and the ways of using one's reading in order to write. He was aware of the role which his own work might play as a model for other writers, and he advised them on how to use their reading. Drawing on previous scholarship, the chapter makes some connections between his Italian poems and what he says about his life in the collections of letters which he constructed and in his Secretum. Then it looks at some examples of Petrarch's poems, both to substantiate a claim about their excellence and to show how that excellence derives from his creative use of his reading. Finally, the chapter considers his attitude to Dante, his immediate and overwhelming forerunner, and discusses the ways in which later writers used Petrarch's work.

Abstract:
While the World Wide Web has impacted many industries significantly, none of them have been affected as dramatically as the publishing industry. The ability to deliver electronic content online and to distribute it in various forms instantaneously using the Web have opened up technological possibilities and consumer expectations that have left the industry grappling for new business models. Most of those running publishing businesses have finally come to a consensus about the importance of the Web to the future of the industry and are embracing the new technologies but with little guidance on how to best use the medium. They are aware of the pressing need to adapt to the much speedier efficiencies, strategies, and requirements of the digital channel while balancing them with non-digital strategies that continue to work but are looking for some guidance on how to move forward. In this chapter, we first describe some of the key trends and challenges faced by book publishers with the emergence of the digital arena. We then focus on the issue of pricing electronic books distributed online, especially in conjunction with books distributed through traditional channels. We outline some of the possible strategies that book publishers could adopt and examine the pros and cons of the different strategies in light of the features of the product marketed and consumer segments targeted.

Abstract:
This book underscores two deep-seated convictions about teaching. The first abandons the idea that learning simply amounts to filling students’ blank minds with missing supplies of theories, perspectives, statistics, and research reports. The second accepts the ideas that personal presence is the sine qua non of both professional practice and professional education. Learning necessarily involves action and interaction. You, your students, and the context produced by your exchange is crucial. The single most important catalyst in this matrix is you—your self. Your personhood affects this exchange in a most significant way. Flowing from this overarching conviction are yet other intermingled building blocks of professional education. Among these are that professional education needs to be learner-focused, not content-centered; it needs to be active, collaborative, emotionally tinged, and tailored to students’ styles. In addition, professional education rests upon certain fundamental beliefs: learning accrues from facilitation; content and its conveyance should mesh; knowledge mastery is but one aspect of learning; thinking and feeling are inseparable; and effective teaching emanates from questioning, responding, and, most important of all, listening. The chief vehicle for advancing professional education is initiating and sustaining a solid and positive relationship. Within a relational milieu, students feel free to examine assumptions, test values, share mistakes, experiment with alternative theories, try out new behaviors, and ultimately make strides toward professional development as self-aware, disciplined practitioners. Teaching involves more than delivery. It stimulates discovery, elicits wonder. Your role mandates your understanding of how students learn and work, and your ability to enable them to draw upon your wisdom and talent as well as the resources you make available. It requires your finding out what they need to know and generating ways to convey it. Your challenge is to make your art so powerful that it appeals at the same time to the intellectual as well as to the emotional lives of students in a visceral way.

Abstract:
The computational grid offers services for efficiently scheduling jobs on the grid, but for grid-enabled applications where data handling is a most relevant part, the data grid kicks in. It typically builds on the concept of files, sites and file transfers between sites. These use a data transfer service, plus a replica manager to keep track of where replicas are located. The authors consider a multi-site, grid-aware data warehouse, which is a large distributed repository sharing a schema and data concerning scientific or business domains. Differently from typical grid scenarios, the data warehouse is not simply a set of files and accesses to individual files. It is a single distributed schema and both localized and distributed computations must be managed over that schema. Given this difference, it is important to study approaches for placement and computation over the grid data warehouse and this is our contribution in this book chapter.

Abstract:
Abstract Currently, it is possible to buy almost anything from books (Amazon.com) to airplane tickets (travelocity.com) using the world wide web. The purpose of this project is to explore the use of the web for the fabrication of mechanical prototype parts, i.e. parts that can be fabricated using standard machine tools like milling machines. The current mechanism for production of prototype parts requires a process of part description preparation, bidding, contract award, and finally fabrication and delivery of the part. This is a substantially more complex process than buying a book or an airplane ticket. In order to achieve “e-commerce” in this field it will be necessary to develop a “clean interface” between the design and fabrication of mechanical prototype parts. This requires an unambiguous description of the part along with an automated method for bidding on the job. A new system called FACILE (Fast Associative Clean Interface Language and Environment) has been proposed to meet this need.

Abstract:
This study examined the ethical behaviour of undergraduate students in relation to cyber technology at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), South Africa, and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. We adopted the pragmatic research paradigm that combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods through the survey method. The sample for the study was drawn from undergraduate students in two purposively selected universities in South Africa and Nigeria. Overall, 450 undergraduate students were invited to participate in the survey; 380 respondents completed and returned the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 84.4%. 14 of the expected 16 members of staff of both Information &amp; Communication Technology Resource Centre ICTREC and Information Technology Section ITS were interviewed, resulting in a response rate of 88%. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used for data analysis. Most of the respondents from the sampled universities reported that they were aware of what constitutes unethical cyber behaviour. Further, the participants (98; 52.1%) revealed that they had never received ethical orientation/training in the university on cyber behaviour, cyber space, or cyber technology. Challenges facing the students is reported. The study recommends that universities should sustain orientation/training programmes on cyber ethics and cyber security awareness at the start of each academic year, especially for newly enrolled students so that they can act responsibly when using the university’s cyberspace. The results of this study may spark further discussions and research on cyber technology access and use in contemporary society.

Abstract:
Designers today, through the creation of media content, do not only create a media construct, but they also participate in the creation of social values, norms, and common patterns of communication. When reading books, manuals and design instructions, a design practitioner often encounters the term "good design". If we take the “good design” concept of industrial designer Dieter Rams, then the term will be describing the product that is useful and understandable, innovative, aesthetic, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, thorough to the last detail, environmentally friendly, and involves as little design as possible. His principles of "good design" can be applied to the field of media design, applications, user interfaces and so on. Or, if we change the paradigm towards the ethics, is “good design” design which is not only aesthetically pleasing but also that strives to do good - to be socially responsible in order to improve the social environment? This approach is the basic of this article. The basis and starting point for the discussion was the article "Redefining design ethics" by Phil McCollam published in Design and Culture, 6: 3, 2014. The author argues that designers have a legal obligation to be aware of and to follow accessibility laws and standards, but also, more broadly, they have an ethical obligation to focus on the needs of the people who will use their designs, even when the law does not explicitly require it of them. Furthermore, he says that future professionals must be challenged to develop solutions that are human-centric. The research is based on a questionnaire and discussions with the students of graphic design. Therefore, the goal of this research is to explore the existence of awareness of the ethical and social role of design in contemporary society through individual awareness of students.

Abstract:
"It was recognised by ‘The Club of Rome’ in 1948 that the earth’s resources were limited and by 1971 in the book ‘Fundamentals of Exhaust Emissions’ I concluded that we should also have concern for CO2 levels in the air and consequent global warming caused by transport emissions. So what is the optimum strategy for minimizing energy use and emissions, recognizing that the car is the prime source of personal space for mobility, and that many governments support a focus as EVs as the solution for the future? To demonstrate how range capability has a significant influence on the optimum life for two classes of EVs and to identify the inter relationship with vehicle life. From this to forecast the optimum service life (before scrapping including recycling) against a back drop of steadily improving EV and battery manufacturing energy and efficiency, Using the best available energy production and usage data, life cycle analysis (more than ‘well-to-wheel’ as the energy content and manufacture of consumables and recycling/reuse is included) is performed for electric vehicles accounting for the change in vehicle use with age in vehicle fleets, in which new vehicles replace older, scrapped ones in the market with improvements in energy efficiency (and CO2 emissions). Depending on the vehicle size and configuration, the optimum vehicle life ranges from 17 years to more than thirty. The greater the installed battery kWh and hence range capability the longer is the optimum service life. As the energy efficiency trend for new vehicles entering the market reduces, as it must according to the law of diminishing returns, vehicles need to remain in use for longer to amortize the embedded energy in manufacturing which will also continue to improve. The analysis is only as reliable as the data. However the sensitivity analysis allows the results to remain useful as the user can adjust the scenario according to updated information. Moreover sensitivity analysis allows the reader to apply the results for regional variables such as the proportion of renewable energy in electricity generation and as a consequence of EVs reduced annual travel compared with conventional and hybrid light duty vehicles.. The application of the most recent input data is also novel. Finally, the author is not aware of analyses of this type that recognise reducing annual travel as vehicles age, rather constant km of travel per year has previously been assumed throughout the vehicle life. On the basis of the median results from the projections, short to moderate range EVs offer the path to minimizing CO2 emissions which conflicts with the general consumer desire for reduced ‘range anxiety’ and thus frequency of recharging. EVs life cycle emissions will be considerably worse than those from hybrid vehicles which use the least long term (several model change overs) energy and produce correspondingly low CO2. The sensitivity analysis allows for conclusions to be drawn about many alternative scenarios."

Abstract:
The undergraduate course, Design of Machine Elements has been offered by the University of Connecticut’s Mechanical Engineering Department for many years. It has been one of the most difficult courses for students to follow and understand, and also for the faculty to teach. A strong basic knowledge of mathematics, theoretical mechanics and the mechanics of materials is required for students to take this mandatory course and to fully follow its contents. To understand entirely the concepts of Design of Machine Elements, students should be acquainted with the history of the strength of materials. Being aware of the importance of such a course the ME faculty has worked to establish outstanding structural engineering teaching and research methods, and to create a departmental nucleus of intensive development of engineering mechanics research and development. The efforts described in this paper have facilitated the teaching and learning of the mechanics of materials and consequently the Design of Machine Elements as well. To accomplish these in both teaching and practical problem solving the instructor must use the unconventional approaches and students must put a great deal of effort into learning the material. It is important for students to have a general knowledge of mathematics and theoretical mechanics, but as this is a foundation of the course, the instructor should review and clarify the specific assumptions of engineering mechanics and strength of materials. One of the pedagogical challenges to be overcome, which is faced by both instructors and students, has always been to connecting the basic theorems and application procedures of engineering mechanics to their practical use in designing machine elements and in calculating static and dynamic stresses and deformations. The concept of avoiding stress concentrations by properly designing the shapes of machine frames and parts should also be emphasized. Transforming plane stresses and deformations into three-dimensional representations and calculations should also be considered. Since machine elements are usually in motion, a dynamic approach to stress and deflection analysis is important as well. After introducing the analysis of dynamic stresses and deformations, the instructor should cover the concept of fatigue, which is the next crucial step. The instructors’ approaches and the unconventional methods they use to familiarize students with such complicated concepts are discussed in this paper. An analysis of representations of stresses and deformations and fatigue analyses of different machine elements are also considered. This paper connects to some approaches previously presented in earlier papers as well as in courses, books and discussions by outstanding engineering mechanics theoreticians, including UConn faculty, especially Dr. Roman Solecki. The paper concludes by recommending effective teaching approaches to complicated machine design concepts and summarizing the lessons learned. This paper is a companion piece to the IMECE 2015 50776 [1].
