Colours play a prominent and dominant role in human life. The dominating feature of any product has been found with its colours elevating the market of colouration in different sectors. Studies have shown that around 10,000 dyes are being circulated in market. Chemistry has been found to lead this industry of colours. Vast production of fabric colours include azo dyes, whereas anthroquinone is also one of the prevailing complexes for cotton and fabric dyeing. The toxic level of the dyes and pigments are not confined till manufacturing but also have after usage effect of the products. It has been found that the chemicals have a carcinogenic effect on human health. During the manufacturing procedure, around 50% of dye stuff gets along with the effluents of the industry leading to release of colourful water. Modification in choice of chemicals is being considered to lessen the toxic effects of existing complexes. This chapter is mainly focused on the toxicology of dyes.

More than a decade ago, data, supposedly, became the new “gold” or “oil” of our “age of big data.” If so, then it is critical for societies wishing to secure economic growth and prosperity to devise a data strategy. Like oil, data requires mining and processing before it can become a valuable and usable asset. First, it should be understood that it is almost never those that supply the raw ore that enjoy long-term economic prosperity. Data is a very clean word for coded life, and the consequences of someone having that knowledge, and being able to use it as they see fit, is at the core of both life and the fabric of society. The fact that data is coded life is the reason why it is a criminal dereliction of duty for a community not to develop a data strategy. Further, since data is the raw material for innovation, we have very little reason to believe we know how it will be used in the future. The only thing we can be certain about with data is that for the foreseeable future there will be significant experimentation. The regions where most of the experimentation will occur have higher chances to become the places where more of the economic growth benefits will accrue. The regions that develop a data strategy that lowers the uncertainty around its collection and usage are those that have the higher chances of becoming the locales of experimentation securing their innovation-based growth.

European users have eagerly adopted novel forms of digital media and related information and communications technologies (Stanton, 2001), making them a part of their increasingly varied and segmented cultures (Brown, Green, & Harper, 2001). For example, the young are active consumers of music, videos, movies, and games; businessmen on the other hand need more and more working tools and applications that enable connectivity when they are on the move. A not very dissimilar scenario is envisaged on troops in action where work on tactical and strategic information and mission management, command, and control, including real-time mission replanning, are essential. All these users rely on the Internet, i-TV, and mobile phones, and they have adapted all of these into the fabric of their lifestyles, or in short, their mobile life. But, functionality cannot be the main driver for design as mobile life is also deeply founded upon shared values and worldviews of the users, pleasure, enjoyment, culture, safety, trust, desire, and so forth (Rheingold, 1993). For example, WAP (wireless application protocol) technologies seemed to provide a powerful tool to the mobile worker. However, it is well known the fraud of WAP mainly due to the scarce usability, high usage cost, and inadequate range of the services provided together with intrinsic limitations of the device itself (insufficient memory storage, low battery autonomy, poor screen resolution, etc. [Cereijo Roibás, 2001]). However, some WAP applications have been widely used by Italian users. The success of this system of applications is due to its efficiency, effectiveness, and relevance for some specific work purposes. Each of the services will be analysed, describing the expected use of each service and the actual use of it by Italian users.

In the previous chapters, the emphasis was placed on establishing the chemical nature of phospholipids normally found in relatively high concentrations in mammalian cells. The methodology described for identification of these compounds can be applied, perhaps with some minor modifications to the structural characterization of phospholipids found in plants, fish, and bacteria. Interwoven into the fabric of these chapters was the subtle reference to their potential biological role in cellular behavior. As lipid biochemistry has developed over the past several years, there is no doubt that the field of signal transduction has had an enormous impact on phospholipid awareness. As might be expected, the potential for phospholipids or their metabolites to exhibit biological activity loomed large. As will be evident in this chapter, phospholipids can certainly have biological activity and this theme shall be explored in some depth. The title “Minor Phospholipids” is not meant to be belittling, but is only intended to reflect the fact that these phospholipids are present in very low concentrations. In fact, some are considered to be formed only after a cell has been stimulated by an extracellular agonist. As shall be seen, these compounds have considerable biological activity and hence are really of major importance in the cellular metabolic scene. The term platelet activating factor (PAF) was originally applied to a phosphoglyceride capable of activating platelets, leading to their aggregation. In addition, in certain species, there was also discharge of their dense granules (as indicated by serotonin release from the platelets). This nomenclature was unfortunate because it is now well established that many cells can produce this compound and that, likewise, PAF can stimulate many other cells. There are many other compounds, such as thrombin and arachidonic acid, which also can activate platelets. Notwithstanding this problem of nomenclature, there is a widespread (deeply entrenched) usage of this term to indicate a specific type of phospholipid with a particular biological activity. Given the status of this field at the current time, the use of the term PAF will be continued here.

The unifying theme for granite landscapes of the world is the granite itself, hence it is logical to start with a brief account of granite geology. For obvious reasons of space and relevance, this chapter cannot provide a comprehensive and extensive treatment of granite as a rock. Rather, its aim is to provide background information on those aspects of granite geology which are relevant to geomorphology and may help to explain the variety of landforms and landscapes supported by granite. The survey of literature about the geomorphology of granite areas reveals that in too many studies the lithology of granite and the structure of their intrusive bodies have not received adequate attention, especially if a ruling paradigm was one of climatic, or climato-genetic geomorphology. Granites were usually described in terms of their average grain size, but much less often of their geochemistry, fabric, or physical properties. Even the usage of the very term ‘granite’ may have lacked accuracy, and many landforms described as supported by granite may in fact have developed in granodiorite. On the other hand, it is true that granite may give way to granodiorites without an accompanying change in scenery. In the Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada, California, these two variants occur side by side and both support deeply incised valleys, precipitous slopes and the famous Sierran domes. Likewise, wider structural relationships within plutons and batholiths, and with respect to the country rock, have been considered in detail rather seldom. In analyses of discontinuities, long demonstrated to be highly significant for geomorphology, terms such as ‘joints’, ‘faults’, and ‘fractures’ have not been used with sufficient rigour. But it has to be noted in defence of many such geologically poorly based studies that adequate geological data were either hardly available or restricted to a few specific localities within extensive areas, therefore of limited use for any spatial analysis of granite landforms. Notwithstanding the above, there exist a number of studies in which landforms have been carefully analysed in their relationships to various aspects of the lithology, structure, and tectonics of granite intrusions.
