We study usage automata, a formal model for specifying policies on the usage of resources. Usage automata extend finite state automata with some additional features, parameters and guards, that improve their expressivity. We show that usage automata are expressive enough to model policies of real-world applications. The reliability, validity, and sensitivity to change of the Hierarchic Dementia Scale (HDS) were tested in two cross-sectional studies and one longitudinal study. Results prove the HDS to be a simple-to-conduct method, economical in terms of time, and possessing high reliability and high concurrent and criterion-related validity. The HDS appears capable of use at all stages of dementia and capable of permitting studies of the course well into the advanced stages of the illness.

Abstract We present a methodology for generating a characterization of the memory used by an assembly program, as well as a formal proof that the assembly is bounded to the generated memory regions. A formal proof of memory usage is required for compositional reasoning over assembly programs. Moreover, it can be used to prove low-level security properties, such as integrity of the return address of a function. Our verification method is based on interactive theorem proving, but provides automation by generating pre- and postconditions, invariants, control-flow, and assumptions on memory layout. As a case study, three binaries of the Xen hypervisor are disassembled. These binaries are the result of a complex build-chain compiling production code, and contain various complex and nested loops, large and compound data structures, and functions with over 100 basic blocks. The methodology has been successfully applied to 251 functions, covering 12,252 assembly instructions.

Abstract Compared to the industry sector, the progress of energy conservation of the household sector is very slow. It is because the household sector is more diverse than the industrial sector, and regulatory enforcement is much more difficult. The government can stop firms’ operation if their environmental burden is too heavy but cannot stop household’s activities. Therefore, the government needs to find energy conservation policies that are supported by the public. Like other countries, the Japanese government has introduced various energy conservation measures to reduce the energy usage from households for the past several decades. It has introduced energy efficiency standards for energy-consuming durables and provided subsidies to promote energy-efficient products in recent years. At the same time, it has raised the price of energy in order to provide households with an appropriate incentive to conserve. In addition, it has promoted renewable energy usage in the household sector. Facing climate change, the Japanese government has not introduced energy conservation measures systematically but rather on an ad hoc basis. In this chapter, we review energy conservation measures implemented in the household sector in Japan. We then make policy recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of energy conservation measures in the household sector.

AbstractLinear Temporal Logic (LTL) interpreted on finite traces is a robust specification framework popular in formal verification. However, despite the high interest in the logic in recent years, the topic of their quantitative extensions is not yet fully explored. The main goal of this work is to study the effect of adding weak forms of percentage constraints (e.g. that most of the positions in the past satisfy a given condition, or that $$\sigma $$ σ is the most-frequent letter occurring in the past) to fragments of LTL. Such extensions could potentially be used for the verification of influence networks or statistical reasoning. Unfortunately, as we prove in the paper, it turns out that percentage extensions of even tiny fragments of LTL have undecidable satisfiability and model-checking problems. Our undecidability proofs not only sharpen most of the undecidability results on logics with arithmetics interpreted on words known from the literature, but also are fairly simple. We also show that the undecidability can be avoided by restricting the allowed usage of the negation, and discuss how the undecidability results transfer to first-order logic on words.

This chapter aims to show how costs can be planned and their usage controlled through ‘standard costing’. In Chapter 4 we looked at the monitoring of costs and in Chapter 5 at pricing. Here we will consider how to plan spending the correct amount on raw materials. This can be fairly complex in terms of recipes, and a loss of standards can easily cause significant cost variances. We will then look at identifying deviations from these standards – what is due to variances in price, and what is due to variances in quantity used. We will also consider the specific problems of food and beverage materials, which can cause them to be so difficult to manage. Standard costing techniques can also be used in other areas. We discussed the management of labour cost earlier, but you can also use the technique to monitor labour cost where a flexible workforce is employed and where productivity is important to the profitability of the business. A further use for the technique is in identifying variations in revenue and considering whether these differences are due to volume or price (or both). By the end of this chapter you will, therefore, be able to: - Identify the features of food and beverage raw materials that affect their controllability - Discuss briefly the process for costing recipes - Calculate variances according to volume and price - Use the procedure for labour and other cost variances - Identify differences in revenues, also due to volume and price.
