Over 6000 entriesWith more than a thousand new entries and more than 2,300 word-frequency ratios, the magisterial fourth edition ofGarner’s Modern English Usagereflects usage lexicography at its finest. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid writing. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound “purists” who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The judgments here are backe

Abstract:
This chapter argues that we should use the terms “sexism” and “misogyny” to mark an important contrast. Sexism is taken to be the branch of patriarchal ideology that justifies and rationalizes a patriarchal social order, while misogyny is the system that polices and enforces its governing norms and expectations. So sexism is scientific; misogyny is moralistic. Sexism wears a lab coat; misogyny goes on witch hunts. A close look at the well-known misogyny speech made by Julia Gillard, then prime minister of Australia, shows that the foregoing ameliorative analysis of misogyny is in keeping with

Abstract:

Levin, Frank S. The Nature of Science. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198808275.003.0002.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 begins with a broad definition of science and then describes in detail how it functions. Of prime importance is that science is strictly concerned with natural phenomena, explanations of which must be based solely on nature. The need for testing is emphasized. The four elements common to all science are specified: facts, hypotheses, laws, and theories. Data do not become facts until the experimental results are verified, while even so-called facts are seen initially to be provisional because they can be wrong, examples of which are presented. Laws are identified as empirically based.

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face a high burden of infection and, commonly, colliding epidemics of HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and other bacterial diseases. The resulting high usage of antimicrobials, inappropriate prescribing, and use of falsified or counterfeit medicines drives antimicrobial resistance. Stewardship programmes need to be developed within the social and cultural norms of the country, and take cognizance of competing health needs, which may prove important barriers. A situational analysis of the country’s resources and challenges with respect to antimicrobial resist

Johansen, Bruce, and Adebowale Akande, eds. Nationalism: Past as Prologue. Nova Science Publishers, Inc., 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.52305/aief3847.

Full text
Abstract:
Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction. This is a worldwide existential threat that affects every living t
