Abstract:

Abstract:
Unatoč razvijenim modernim sustavima mjerenja poslovnog rezultata, hotelska industrija u Hrvatskoj još uvijek ostaje orijentirana tradicionalnim oblicima i vrlo sporo se prilagođava suvremenim sustavima.

Abstract:
Currently, Slovenia does not have the bases for the introduction of a uniform system of accounts for monitoring business performance in the hotel industry, called the USALI standard ("Uniform System of Accounts for The Lodging Industry"), which allows comparison of an individual hotel to similar hotels in a closer and wider area, has been the principal finding of the research ordered by the Slovenian Tourist Board and conducted by the Faculty of Economics, University of Ljubljana. The aim of the research was to examine the possibilities of the direct use of the USALI standard in Slovenia as well as about the necessary changes of the existing situation in the area of accounting records and other records in the hotel industry, so that the performance of the Slovene companies could be compared to the average of the hotel industry in the world, Europe and individual countries.

Abstract:
According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the tourism industry is one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the economy. It was expected that by 2020, the proportion of people employed in this area and the contribution of tourism to world GDP would amount to about 10%. The hotel industry in this sector is the most profitable and progressive. At that, the Russian hotel market volume lags significantly behind the world indicators and does not exceed one percent in the global hotel industry. The active development of the tourism industry, and as a result, the hospitality industry, has created conditions for the intense development of the hotel business in Russia. A significant impetus to this in recent years have been the 2016 Winter Olympic Games and the 2018 FIFA World Cup. However, even in the preparatory stages for these large-scale international events, many experts expressed concerns about the idleness of most of the built facilities, the downfall of many accommodations and catering enterprises, and the decline of infrastructure after completion of these sporting events. These circumstances determine the objective need to find and implement mechanisms for effective management of hotel enterprises based on the study of international experience and Russian best practices in the hotel business.

Abstract:
Purpose: This study presents an inquiry on the historical evolution of the uniforming movement in cost accounting and its current position in the lodging sector. Its paramount objective is ‘to learn from the past' and, at the same time, to pose a question of future: where are aiming the current techniques of cost management in the lodging industry to? A specific purpose of this inquiry was fixed, on the base of a necessary retrospective look, in outlining and analyzing the actual accounting informative needs of today’s hotel complexes, considering the two main directions that hotel accounting has taken throughout its (long) history in search of uniformity. A uniform purpose that, from 1926 on, the successive versions of the USAH - Uniform System of Accounts for Hotels has being pursuing (an acronym modified in 1996 as USALI - Uniform System of Accounts for Lodging Industries).Design/methodology: This work composes of two parts differentiated and clearly interconnected:In a first study it examines the movement uniform system in its most dynamic period, as they were the years between the two WW (1920 - 1940), its aims and most outstanding contributions, its economic and politician circumstances, social influences, etc.In a second study the interest is focused in the current period and specifically in the Spanish lodging industry, where, by means of the method of the survey and personal interviewing, it aims to evaluate and interpret the degree of need perceived by the managerial agents of the sector about an accounting uniform movement in Spain.Findings: The inquiry offers two types of contributions and results: on the one hand, a reconfiguration of the role exerted by the ‘uniforming’ movement in the history of management accounting; on the other hand, it makes evident, by means of a field inquiry, which are the main informative needs of the lodging sector in Spain, beyond a mere sectorial adaptation of the current general plan of accounting.Originality/value: The authors have focused their inquiry on the big evolutionary lines that have given fruit in the different versions of the USALI, considering its utility as the starting point for a hypothetical system of accounting management adjusted to the needs and idiosyncrasy of the Hispanic sector. One of the main conclusions that can be extracted is that, either by looking at the review of the past or by summarizing the analysis of the present needs, the evidence shows that the European hotel industry faces a pending task that the North American tradition has been successful to channel in a way comparatively more advanced: the fact of having a complete and uniform instrument of accounting information.

Abstract:
The goal of this paper is to present the achieved development level of managerial accounting in the Croatian hotel industry. The research was conducted on sample of 42% of all Croatian hotels. This sample also presents regional structure, organisation status, size, ownership structure and organisation form. The fact that the predominant methods are traditional cost allocation-methods shows us that accounting is still oriented to the external users. In most cases, the results from the previous periods are used as the comparative value in the control of actual costs. The research has shown that financial statements are prepared on monthly basis for top management. It is absolutely necessary to put additional effort into improving the cost allocation methods and techniques, through implementing modem systems and methods of management accounting. Only in such circumstances the accounting information could be presented to lower levels of management on weekly or daily basis. Managerial accounting is the framework for development of responsibility accounting, which is based on specifics of hospitality industry and accounting standards of the “Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry” (USALI). Reporting systems should be adjusted to the information required by each level of management (especially in area of current and particular reports). The conducted research indicates the necessity for intense implementing of the USALI on the level of responsibility centres. This would ensure the transparency of the managing information and possibility of their comparison. The individual goals should be in accordance with global goal, and the results comparable with similar hotel enterprises in the environment. This would eventually improve the overall competition of a particular hotel enterprise on the global tourist market.

Abstract:
In any analysis of Bahrain’s political structure, it is fundamental to understand the relationship between the Usili, Akhbaris, and authority. This analysis includes an assessment of the implications of the differences between the Usili and Akhbaris, thus shedding light on the dynamic interaction between these players in local and external structures and clarifying the effect of ideology and identity on the ties of authority with Shi’a. Usuli and Akhbaris principles have incontrovertible implications for the political perceptions of Shi’a groups and elites with regard to their dealings with the government in Bahrain. These religious perceptions form part of the political equation involved in ensuring the convergence of authority with the Shi’a community. This paper considers how differences between the Usuli and Akhbaris have shaped the relation between authority and Shi’a in Bahrain.

Abstract:
This study investigated contributions to the peer-reviewed library and information science (LIS) journal literature by U.S. academic librarian (USAL) authors over a ten-year period (2003–2012). The results were compared to those of two previous five-year studies that covered the time periods of 1993–1997 and 1998–2002 to examine longitudinal trends. For USAL authors as a group, publication productivity, the proportion of peer-reviewed articles contributed to the LIS literature, and sole-authorship declined. Among USALs who did publish, productivity patterns remained similar over twenty years, with a slight increase in the percentage of USAL authors who published three or more articles in five years. The top twenty high-publication libraries from 2003 to 2012 were from public research universities, unlike two earlier studies that found private university libraries among the top twenty.

Selective harmonic elimination (SHE) has been a widely researched alternative to traditional PWM techniques. This paper presents the selective harmonic elimination of a uniform step asymmetrical multilevel inverter (USAMI) using genetic algorithm (GA) which eliminates specified higher order harmonics while maintaining the required fundamental voltage. This technique can be applied to USAMI with any number of levels. As an example, in this paper a 9-level USAMI is considered and the optimum switching angles are calculated to eliminate the 5th, 7th and 11th harmonics.

Abstract:
Aims: To compare the accuracy of the ultrasound attenuation index (USAI) and hepato-renal index (HRI) for the diagnosis of hepatic steatosis (HS). Material and methods: Two hundred and twenty-four potential living hepatic donors underwent US and subsequent US-guided liver biopsy. The USAI was calculated from US images with an 8 MHz transducer and HRI was measured on sagittal images with a clear visualization of both the liver and kidney. Using histological degrees of HS as the reference standard, we compared the performance of USAI and HRI for diagnosing HS ≥ 5% and ≥ 30% by receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. The interobserver agreement was evaluated by using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) or Bland–Altman statistics. Results: Histologic degree of HS was 0–70% (median, 5%). HRI showed a tendency towards higher accuracy than USAI for diagnosing HS ≥ 5% (the area under the ROC curve, 0.856 vs. 0.820; p= 0.279) and ≥ 30% (0.937 vs. 0.909; p = 0.378) without statistical significance. There was an excellent interobserver agreement for both USAI and HRI (ICC = 0.931 and 0.973, respectively). According to the Bland–Altman method, the 95% limits of difference between two readers for HS were −8.5% to 6.6% by USAI and −4.8% to 6.2% by HRI. Most patients would have the difference of calculated HS by USAI (74.0%) and HRI (96.0%) from different operators within a range of ±5%. Conclusions: Although statistically insignificant, HRI was superior to USAI for the diagnosis and quantitative estimation of HS in terms of diagnostic performance, including accuracy and reproducibility.

Abstract:
The U.S. Drought Monitor (USDM) has been the de facto operational drought monitoring product for the United States for the last two decades. For most of this time, its coverage included the 50 States and Puerto Rico. In 2019, coverage was expanded to include the U.S.-Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI). The geography, geomorphology, and climatology of the USAPI significantly differ from those of the mainland U.S. (CONUS) and they posed a unique challenge for the USDM authors. Following National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) priorities for development of products in collaboration with users in what is termed “use-inspired science”, NOAA agencies conducted several workshops to identify data and impacts relevant for, and develop drought monitoring criteria appropriate for, the USAPI. Once the criteria were identified and data processing systems were set up, the USAPI were included as part of the operational USDM drought monitoring beginning in March 2019. The drought monitoring criteria consist of weekly and monthly minimum precipitation thresholds for triggering drought, and they follow the USDM “convergence of evidence” methodology for determining the severity level (Dx) of the drought spell.

Abstract:
The study of takhrij (retrieval) is one of the most important mechanisms in ijtihad (independent reasoning) by fuqaha’ (jurists) and usuli (lit. those who go back to first principles). In usul (principles) and furu’ (branches) of Islamic law, the usulis were deliberately referring to madhab (school of law) founders especially after the decrease of mujtahids who managed to attain a level of independence and able to deal with detailed evidences in finding solutions to legal problem. Among the attention of takhrij of usuli is to expound legal maxim principles from fundamental sources the Quran and hadith contained of principle of legal reasoning and branches of Islamic jurisprudence. Utilizing descriptive analytical method, this article scrutinizes the concept of takhrij of usuli, its categories and some of its applications. The research found that the takhrij of usuli is concerned with the derivation of Islamic legal maxims, the principles of legal reasoning as well as the branches of law. However, the derivation is unconcerned about specific evidence of Islamic jurisprudence topics but the whole evidence whether literal, divergence or conformity of ibadat (submissive obedience), mu’amalat (transactions), and personal interest topic.

Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of this work is to verify whether accessibility to public services in city districts of Warsaw, corresponds to real-estate prices. We introduce a new index named the “Urban Services Accessibility Index” (USAI) which compares the availability of public services within districts of a city in three dimensions: access to healthcare, access to education, and availability of public transport. We found that the districts of Śródmieście, Ochota and Żoliborz have the highest apartment prices and USAI values. Warsaw exhibits a clear distance-decay pattern in USAI values which correlates well with average apartment prices. This pattern results from poor development of public services in peripheral city districts (e.g. Bemowo, Białołęka, Wilanów) while the central district of Śródmieście stands out as the unquestionable leader in terms of accessibility to the mentioned services. USAI proved itself to be a robust method in the comparative analysis of city districts’ development.

Abstract:
Abstract Because of the need for information related to the variability and predictability of sea level on season-to-longer time scales, the Pacific ENSO Applications Climate (PEAC) Center runs the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-based canonical correlation analysis (CCA) statistical model to generate sea level forecasts for the U.S.-affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) region with lead times of 3–6 months in advance. However, in order to meet the increasing demand for longer lead-time (e.g., 6–12 months) forecasts, the PEAC Center, as part of the advances in operational sea level forecasts, recently incorporated both SST and zonal wind components of trade winds (U) for modulating sea level variability on longer time scales. The combined SST and U-based forecasts are found to be more skillful on longer time scales. This improvement has enabled the capability of our clients in the USAPI region to develop a more efficient long-term response plan for hazard management. In a recent “Regional Integrated Water Level Service” meeting, it was revealed that the development and distribution of “seasonal water level outlooks” in the Pacific basin region is an area of mutual interest. We therefore synthesize the current operational forecasting, warning, and response activities of the PEAC Center and discuss the manner in which our experience in the USAPI region can contribute to the development of adaptation strategies for longer time-scale climate variability and change for the non-USAPI region in the south Pacific.

Abstract:
Abstract Text features and quality of learner text: an annotation studyManually annotated corpora of writing products may greatly contribute to writing research: they offer detailed insights in the quality of these texts, in the text features actually attended to by human text raters, in possibilities and difficulties for the use of automatic writing analytics and writing tools, and in the relations between different text quality dimensions. This paper presents the Utrecht System for Annotation of Learner text (USALT), that covers both general features (orthography, punctuation, wording, coherence) and genre-specific elements (such as openings, endings, structuring devices and politeness). The annotations contain up to three items (annotation unit; problem type; part-of-speech tag). USALT reflects various text quality dimensions, notably correctness, comprehensibility and appropriateness (both stylistically and in terms of genre conventions). We present an USALT analysis of 371 texts produced by Dutch students from grades 7-9 (aged 12-15 years), taken from the so-called Schrijfmeters-corpus. The assignment concerned a letter about ‘typically Dutch things’ to a Swedish girl about to emigrate to The Netherlands. USALT reliabilities were adequate. In terms of problem frequency, we were struck by the pervasiveness of punctuation problems. Furthermore, the orthography and punctuation problems together present considerable difficulties for automatic analysis of original learner texts at this level. A remarkable result regarding relations between various text quality dimensions is that the frequency of orthography problems correlates higher with genre convention problems than with lexico-grammatical problems. We also used the annotations as predictors of the holistic scores assigned to the texts by human raters. Standardized annotation frequencies by themselves may account for 45% of the score variance, with a prominent role for annotations regarding genre elements; text length by itself explains 52%. The best model includes both text length and annotations (65% explained variance). In ongoing work, USALT is being extended to handle argumentative writing assignments.

This is the first comprehensive work on the origins, development, and sociopoliticalramifications of the Usuli movement within Twelver Shi‘ism. Giventhat Wahid Bihbahani (1709-91), the founder and catalyst for Usuli revivalismduring the nineteenth century, is barely known in the West, it is a welcome additionto the growing Western literature on medieval and modern Shi‘ism. Thisongoing movement is the most powerful force in Twelver Shi‘ism.Using a wide range of primary and secondary sources, Heern highlightsthe emergence of modern Usulism during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While locating its genesis within a global context, he outlines its ideologicalroots, historical background, and development. His central argument isthat Usulism was a response to the ummah’s changing sociopolitical conditionsand part of a wider trend of Islamic reform and revivalist movements that beganin the eighteenth century. He maintains that its emergence enabled the Shi‘iclerical establishment to attain sociopolitical and economic ascendancy in Iranand Iraq, and that the movement survived without government patronage bycultivating transnational links with the Shi‘i laity. For him, Shi‘i Islam’s recentascendancy is the result of the neo-Usuli movement ...

Abstract:
Abstract Strong tropical cyclones often undergo eyewall replacement cycles that are accompanied by concentric eyewalls and/or rapid intensity changes while the secondary eyewall contracts radially inward and eventually replaces the inner eyewall. To the best of our knowledge, the only documented partial/incomplete tertiary eyewall has been mostly inferred from two-dimensional satellite images or one-dimensional aircraft flight-level measurements that can be regarded as indirect and tangential. This study presents the first high spatial and temporal resolution Doppler radar observations of a tertiary eyewall formation event in Typhoon Usagi (2013) over a 14-h time period before it makes landfall. The primary (tangential) and secondary (radial) circulations of Usagi deduced from the Ground-Based Velocity Track Display (GBVTD) methodology clearly portrayed three distinct axisymmetric maxima of radar reflectivity, tangential wind, vertical velocity, and vertical vorticity. Usagi’s central pressure steadily deepened during the contraction of the secondary and tertiary eyewalls until the tertiary eyewall hit the coast of southeast China, which erminated the intensification of the storm.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Background: Systematic screening for antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 is a crucial tool for surveillance of the COVID-19 pandemic. The University of Salamanca (USAL) in Spain designed a project called “DIANCUSAL” (Diagnosis of New Coronavirus, COVID-19, in University of Salamanca) to measure antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 among its ~34,000 students and academic staff, as the influence of the university community in the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in the city of Salamanca and neighboring towns hosting USAL campuses could be substantial. Objective: The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies among USAL students, professors and staff and to evaluate the demographic, academic, clinical and lifestyle and behavioral factors related to seropositivity. Methodology: The DIANCUSAL study is an ongoing university population-based cross-sectional study, with the work described herein conducted from July–October 2020. All USAL students, professors and staff were invited to complete an anonymized questionnaire. Seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was detected and quantified by using chemiluminescent assays for IgG and IgM. Principal findings: A total of 8197 (24.71%) participants were included. The mean age was 31.4 (14.5 SD) years, and 66.0% of the participants were female. The seroprevalence was 8.25% overall and was highest for students from the education campus (12.5%) and professors from the biomedical campus (12.6%), with significant differences among faculties (p = 0.006). Based on the questionnaire, loss of smell and fever were the symptoms most strongly associated with seropositivity, and 22.6% of seropositive participants were asymptomatic. Social distancing was the most effective hygiene measure (p = 0.0007). There were significant differences in seroprevalence between participants with and without household exposure to SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.0000), but not between students who lived in private homes and those who lived in dormitories. IgG antibodies decreased over time in the participants with confirmed self-reported COVID-19 diagnoses. Conclusions: The analysis revealed an overall 8.25% seroprevalence at the end of October 2020, with a higher seroprevalence in students than in staff. Thus, there is no need for tailored measures for the USAL community as the official average seroprevalence in the area was similar (7.8% at 22 June and 12.4 at 15 November of 2020). Instead, USAL members should comply with public health measures.

Abstract:
The large degradation of the mechanical performance of hollow reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers subjected to multi-dimensional earthquakes has not been thoroughly assessed. This paper aims to improve the existing seismic damage model to assess the seismic properties of tall, hollow RC piers subjected to pseudo-static, biaxial loading. Cyclic bilateral loading tests on fourteen 1/14-scale pier specimens with different slenderness ratios, axial load ratios, and transverse reinforcement ratios were carried out to investigate the damage propagation and the cumulative dissipated energy with displacement loads. By considering the influence of energy dissipation on structural damage, a new damage model (M-Usami model) was developed to assess the damage characteristics of hollow RC piers. The results present four consecutive damage stages during the loading process: (a) cracking on concrete surface, (b) yielding of longitudinal reinforcements; (c) spalling of concrete, and (d) collapsing of pier after the concrete crushed and the longitudinal bars ruptured due to the flexural failure. The damage level caused by the seismic waves can be reduced by designing specimens with a good seismic energy dissipation capacity. The theoretical damage index values calculated by the M-Usami model agreed well with the experimental observations. The developed M-Usami model can provide insights into the approaches to assessing the seismic damage of hollow RC piers subjected to bilateral seismic excitations.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract A three-step approach to develop a framework for dynamical seasonal prediction of precipitation over the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) is adopted. First, guided by the climatological features of basic variables, a view that climates of the USAPI are connected by large-scale phenomena involving the warm pool, South Pacific convergence zone, tropical monsoons, and subtropical anticyclone is proposed. Second, prediction skill in ensemble hindcasts performed with the Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2), is evaluated with the hypothesis that ENSO is the leading candidate for large and persisting precipitation departures. Third, moist static energy budget diagnostics are performed to identify physical processes responsible for precipitation anomalies. At leads of 0–6 months, CFSv2 demonstrates useful skill in predicting Niño-3.4 SST and equatorial Pacific precipitation anomalies. During El Niño, positive precipitation anomalies along the central (eastern) equatorial Pacific are anchored by net radiative flux (Frad) and moist advection (evaporation and Frad). The model’s skill in predicting precipitation anomalies over South Pacific (Hawaiian) islands is highest (lowest). Over the west Pacific islands, the skill is low during the rainy season. During El Niño, skill over the USAPI, in particular predicting dryness persistence at long leads is useful. Suppressed precipitation over the Hawaiian and South Pacific (west Pacific) islands are determined by anomalous dry and cold air advection (reduced evaporation and Frad). These processes are local, but are dictated by circulation anomalies forced by ENSO. Model budget estimates are qualitatively consistent with those obtained from reanalysis, boosting confidence for societal benefits. However, observational constraints, as well as budget residuals, pose limitations.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective Accessing medical data from multiple institutions is difficult owing to the interinstitutional diversity of vocabularies. Standardization schemes, such as the common data model, have been proposed as solutions to this problem, but such schemes require expensive human supervision. This study aims to construct a trainable system that can automate the process of semantic interinstitutional code mapping. Materials and Methods To automate mapping between source and target codes, we compute the embedding-based semantic similarity between corresponding descriptive sentences. We also implement a systematic approach for preparing training data for similarity computation. Experimental results are compared to traditional word-based mappings. Results The proposed model is compared against the state-of-the-art automated matching system, which is called Usagi, of the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership common data model. By incorporating multiple negative training samples per positive sample, our semantic matching method significantly outperforms Usagi. Its matching accuracy is at least 10% greater than that of Usagi, and this trend is consistent across various top-k measurements. Discussion The proposed deep learning-based mapping approach outperforms previous simple word-level matching algorithms because it can account for contextual and semantic information. Additionally, we demonstrate that the manner in which negative training samples are selected significantly affects the overall performance of the system. Conclusion Incorporating the semantics of code descriptions more significantly increases matching accuracy compared to traditional text co-occurrence-based approaches. The negative training sample collection methodology is also an important component of the proposed trainable system that can be adopted in both present and future related systems.

Abstract:
Abstract Japanese media franchising is normally discussed in relation to long-running chains of serial transmedia production known in Japan as 'media mix'. I argue that this focus on the biggest of Japanese franchises is over-determining how we conceptualize the flows of adaptation in Japanese media culture. Therefore, in this article, I focus on a short-lived franchise based around Yumi Unita's manga Usagi Drop (literally, Bunny Drop, 2009‐11) in order to think about the media mix as a set of relational adaptation processes. In the space of just a few months in 2011, this manga about a young man adopting his grandfather's illegitimate daughter became the seemingly unlikely source of a transmedia franchise that included television animation and live action film. Focusing on such a short-lived cycle of production allows me to reconsider how Japanese franchise media texts relate to one another, and to decentre anime as the defacto core medium in Japanese franchising. Expanding the view of Japanese media mix adaptations, I consider how both internal and external factors can influence media franchising and adaptation practices in contemporary Japan. Retracing the production discourses around the creation of the Usagi Drop franchise therefore allows me to reconsider the concept of media mix as adaptation practice and process in Japan.
