Conventionally, the process of clinical diagnosis is seen as distinct from subsequent clinical decisions. In the current study we challenge this distinction by examining a category use effect whereby diagnostic features that can be used to classify instances and make additional predictions are more likely to be used in diagnosis. During training, senior medical students ( n = 36) and undergraduates ( n = 44) learned to classify cases into one of two artificial disease categories. They were then asked to make an additional prediction about each instance. Some features were informative for both

Category use in first impressions of restaurant interiors was investigated. Subjects were 98 students who viewed slides of four restaurant interiors and wrote descriptions of each restaurant. The contents of the descriptions were analyzed using a classification system developed by the researchers. “Holistic impressions” was the most common category used, followed by “room components” and “color and pattern.” Category use was not related to characteristics of the restaurants or to subjects' major fields of study.

AbstractLet$\mathcal{C}$be closed symmetric monoidal Grothendieck category. We define the pure derived category with respect to the monoidal structure via a relative injective model category structure on the categoryC($\mathcal{C}$) of unbounded chain complexes in$\mathcal{C}$. We use λ-Purity techniques to get this. As application we define the stalkwise pure derived category of the category of quasi–coherent sheaves on a quasi-separated scheme. We also give a different approach by using the category of flat quasi–coherent sheaves.

How do infants initially determine whether a novel object word labels a specific individual (e.g. Madonna) or an instance of a category (e.g., a person)? The research in this dissertation tested the hypothesis that infants assume words for objects from some categories (e.g., people) label individuals (are proper names) but words for objects from other categories (e.g., artifacts) label instances of the category (are count nouns). This assumption could help infants to identify proper names and count nouns in their language, and thereby facilitate the learning of the linguistic proper name/count

Abstract:
The UK Department for Transport (DfT) is developing a vehicle approval scheme to enable the safe and secure deployment of fully automated vehicles in Great Britain. This project developed proposals for administrative, procedural and technical requirements for all technical aspects which do not relate to the automated driving system (ADS). A proposal for the categorisation of fully automated vehicles was developed during the course of the project in collaboration with the Department. For M-/N-category vehicles the proposal included new sub-categories for dual mode (driven manually and by ADS) a

Plevin, Richard, Holly Gibbs, James Duffy, Sahoko Yui, and Sonia Yeh. Agro-ecological Zone Emission Factor (AEZ-EF) Model (v47). GTAP Technical Paper, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.21642/gtap.tp34.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the agro-ecological zone emission factor model (AEZ-EF) is to estimate the total CO2-equivalent emissions from land use changes, e.g., from an analysis of biofuels impacts or policy analyses such as estimating the effect of changes in agricultural productivity on emissions from land use. The model combines matrices of carbon fluxes (Mg CO2/ha/y) with matrices of changes in land use (ha) according to land-use category as projected by GTAP or similar AEZ-oriented models. As published, AEZ-EF aggregates the carbon flows to the same 19 regions and 18 AEZs used by GTAP-BIO, the versi

Regulated Products Risk Assessment Team. Safety Assessment: Magnesium L-threonate as a novel food for use in food supplements. Food Standards Agency, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.ply807.

Full text
Abstract:
An application was submitted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) in April 2021 from AIDP, USA (“the applicant”) for the authorisation of magnesium L-threonate monohydrate as a novel food. The novel food is magnesium L-threonate monohydrate which is intended to be used as a source of magnesium in food supplements. Magnesium L-threonate monohydrate is manufactured via a chemical synthetic process, isolated, purified and then dried to a powder. This new application is seeking to use the novel food within the food category: food supplement. To support the FSA and F

Abstract:
Advancements in machine learning and natural language processing have made text classification increasingly attractive for information retrieval. However, developing text classifiers is challenging when no prior labeled data are available for a rare category of interest. Finding instances of the rare class using a uniform random sample can be inefficient and costly due to the rare category’s low base rate. This work presents an approach that combines the strengths of text classification and Boolean retrieval to help learn rare concepts of interest. As a motivating example, we use the task of f

Abstract:
Turkey’s history and politics allow populism and Sunni Islamist civilizationalism to thrive. The ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) use of Islamist authoritarian populism in its second decade of power has widened its “otherization” of political opponents, non-Muslims, non-Sunnis, ethnic minorities, vulnerable groups, and all those who reject the AKP’s views and democratic transgressions. To comprehend how Erdogan and his deft colleagues leverage identities of Sunni Islam and Turkish ethnicity, alongside pre-existing collective fears to develop populist authoritarianism, in this artic

Review question / Objective: The purpose of the current review was to systematically and critically evaluate the use RPE-based methods in professional volleyball. Condition being studied: Monitoring athlete load is better understood through sub-dividing load into two groups – internal and external. Internal training load (ITL) refers to the physiological stress that a training session induces in the athlete. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) has become the most common method of monitoring ITL. The RPE method was originally developed by Borg, and Foster et al. created a simple technique to qua

Abstract:
In many parts of the world, forests and peatlands, previously considered to be the largest terrestrial carbon storehouses, are transitioning into super carbon emitters under warming conditions, due to large and frequent wildfires. Carbon mitigation actions and policies— including carbon pricing, credit verification, and Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) projects under the forestry and land-use category, as well as the Paris Agreement— fail to properly account for wildfire-related carbon emissions. Natural carbon sequestration in dry soils through forestation policies might be ineffective in warmin

Abstract:
An application was submitted to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) in February 2021 from Pharmaneutra S.p.a., Italy (“the applicant”) for the authorisation of cetylated fatty acids as a novel food. The novel food is a mixture of cetylated fatty acids, cetyl myristate and cetyl oleate, which are synthesised from cetyl alcohol with myristic acid and, cetyl alcohol with oleic acid, respectively. These two cetylated fatty acids are then blended with olive oil to give a finished product containing 70 – 80% cetylated fatty acids. The application is a new application, s

Mracek Dietrich, Anna, and Ravi Rajamani. Unsettled Issues Regarding the Certification of Electric Aircraft. SAE International, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.4271/epr2021007.

Full text
Abstract:
The aerospace industry is beginning to grapple with the reality of certifying electric aircraft (EA), signaling the maturing of the field. Many players are ramping up their activities to respond to imminent technical, safety, and regulatory requirements. While there are gaps in EA knowledge as well as the processes for certifying them, some leading standards development organizations (SDOs) such as SAE International, ASTM International, and RTCA—ably supported by representatives from regulatory agencies—are stepping in to address many of these issues. Topicality of modeling information transparency is determined by the influence it has on the effectiveness of management decisions made by an economic entity in the context of uncertainty and information asymmetry. It has been found that information transparency is a poorly structured category which acts as a qualitative characteristic of information and at certain levels forms an additional spectrum of properties of the information that has been adequately perceived or processed. As a result of structuring knowledge about the factor environment, a fuzzy cognitive model of information transpar
