Kaiser, Richard Lawrence. "Analysis and Connection of Lightweight CFRP Sandwich Panels for Use as Floor Diaphragms in Structural Steel Buildings." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/321006.

Abstract:
A lightweight carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sandwich panel has been developed for floor use in commercial office building construction. CFRP laminate skins were combined with low-density rigid polyurethane foam to create a composite sandwich panel suitable for floor use. The CFRP sandwich panel was optimized to withstand code prescribed office-building live loads using a 3D finite element computer program called SolidWorks. The thickness of the polyurethane foam was optimized to meet both strength and serviceability requirements for gravity loading. Deflection ultimately was the contr

Performance of bridges during previous earthquakes has demonstrated that many structural failures could be attributed to seismic deficiencies in bridge columns. Lack of transverse reinforcement and inadequate splicing of longitudinal reinforcement in potential plastic hinge regions of columns constitute primary reasons for their poor performance. A number of column retrofit techniques have been developed and tested in the past. These techniques include steel jacketing, reinforced concrete jacketing and use of transverse prestressing (RetroBelt) for concrete confinement, shear strengthening and

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Understanding how divergent selection results in the evolution of reproductive isolation (i.e. speciation) is an important goal in evolutionary biology. Populations of herbivorous insects using different host plant species can experience divergent selection from multiple selective pressures which can rapidly lead to speciation. Restio leafhoppers are a group of herbivorous insect species occurring within the Cape Floristic Region (CFR) of South Africa. They are specialised on different plant species in the Restionaceae family.

A special problem in many reinforced concrete structures built in the 1970s and earlier is the lack of continuity between elements. Continuity is a characteristic of structures essential to preventing collapse. Therefore, in extreme loading conditions such as loss of a column support due to terrorist attack or if earthquake or other extreme actions occur, the structures could be vulnerable to collapse. The study reported here focused on two structural discontinuities in existing reinforced concrete structures, discontinuity in bottom reinforcement in beams (horizontal discontinuity) and poorly
