Abstract:
We commonly understand by “translation” the creation, in one language, of an expression that will be the equivalent of a pre-existing expression in another language. But much happens in actual translating, especially literary translation, that is not covered by that definition. For example, calques and transliterations import expressions from one language to another; and translators often allude to elements of the cultural background of the target language, thus artificially creating a context for the translated text. The intent of this book is to scrutinize such aspects of translation and to consider them as normal and central to the translating process, not exceptional or marginal. Indeed, they are a mark of the creativity of translators. These features also remind us of the internal diversity of languages, which are always in contact and always in a process of change.

Abstract:
The final step in making the case for an English-based, source-oriented EU Translation is demonstrating its implementation. The case study of contract law integration helps illustrate how language versions of EU legislation may best preserve syntactic correspondence and use neologisms for EU legal terminology. This exercise includes addressing the challenging intricacies that a source-oriented approach brings. For one, syntactic correspondence is harder to achieve between languages with dissimilar grammatical rules. Second, a particular general language might not offer neologisms that are sufficiently yet not overly “foreign” to the national legal language. However, the underlying philosophical concepts of language and of translation demonstrate that these complexities do not therefore render source-oriented EU Translation “imperfect.” In fact, they show that 24 language versions are indeed capable of expressing a single EU legal language in a uniform manner.

Abstract:
New media and the new communication spaces they bring are often heralded as revolutionary contexts of language use. This chapter aims to look beyond this hype to consider the effects of this recent context of use on existing language policy theory. An initial case study is Facebook and its Translations application, which I examine using virtual ethnographic methods. In this context, the commercial entity Facebook and the individuals of the Irish language Translations application are the primary language policy actors, developing the de facto language policy of this domain and affecting the multilingual World Wide Web. It is concluded that commercial entities, technological developments, and individuals are not merely agents or actors in language policy processes. Instead, the author adopts the concepts of media convergence, participatory culture, and collective intelligence to understand how media producers and consumers act in new and unpredictable ways in language policy processes online.

Abstract:
Perceptual processing is translation of patterns in the data of sense into cognitive understanding without uniceptual inference. Understanding language differs from ordinary perceptual processing in that the signs it translates are detached rather than attached. This similarity is obscured because ordinary uses of the verbs of perception do not track a kind of psychological processing. Their use is mostly factive, which encourages overlooking the fallibility of perception. One result is the mistaken view that perceptual illusions are an anomaly and that perception is cognitively impenetrable. The assumption that each of the senses has its own proprietary level of perception and the assumption that differences in the result of perceptual processing are always accompanied by differences in perceptual experience are questioned. Finally, a number of intuitive objections to the idea that understanding language is a form of perceptual processing are discussed.
