Abstract:
Purpose – Zotero is a Reference Management Software (RMS) that can help students manage references, citations, and bibliographies automatically. However, the background factors and the extent to which students understand and feel the benefits of using Zotero in this process have not been widely studied, especially from a qualitative research perspective. Therefore, this study aims to examine the factors behind using Zotero as a reference management tool and its impact on the process of writing academic texts for students.Methodology – The research employs a qualitative design with data collected from twelve undergraduate students at Tanjungpura University during the 2023-2024 academic year. Participants were selected based on their confirmed experience using Zotero for academic writing. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns and themes in the responses.Findings – The research findings indicate three main themes. The first theme is the perception of ease of use, with subthemes of ease of download, installation, and use, as well as ease of understanding and learning. The second theme is the perception of usefulness with the subthemes of time efficiency, improved score, improving writing quality, ease of citation, and bibliography, making it easy to translate. The third theme is the influence of using the subthemes of academic encouragement, friend encouragement, and lecturer encouragement. These findings underscore Zotero’s effectiveness in supporting students’ academic writing needs.Significance – This research benefits educators, students, and academic institutions seeking to incorporate practical reference management tools into academic writing practices. It highlights Zotero's potential to streamline the writing process and improve academic outcomes, offering valuable insights for integrating technology into higher education curricula. Abstract:
Objective: To understand the performance of EndNote 20 and Zotero 6’s full text retrieval features. Methods: Using the University of York’s subscriptions, we tested and compared EndNote and Zotero’s full text retrieval. 1,000 records from four evidence synthesis projects were tested for the number of: full texts retrieved; available full texts retrieved; unique full texts (found by one program only); and differences in versions of full texts for the same record. We also tested the time taken and accuracy of retrieved full texts. One dataset was tested multiple times to confirm if the number of full texts retrieved was consistent. We also investigated the available full texts missed by EndNote or Zotero by: reference type; whether full texts were available open access or via subscription; and the content provider. Results: EndNote retrieved 47% of available full texts versus 52% by Zotero. Zotero was faster by 2 minutes 15 seconds. Each program found unique full texts. There were differences in full text versions retrieved between programs. For both programs, 99% of the retrieved full texts were accurate. Zotero was less consistent in the number of full texts it retrieved. Conclusion: EndNote and Zotero do not find all available full texts. Users should not assume full texts are correct; are the version of record; or that records without full texts cannot be retrieved manually. Repeating the full text retrieval process multiple times could yield additional full texts. Users with access to EndNote and Zotero could use both for full text retrieval.

Abstract:
Zotero is a reference management program that enables users to import references from online sources with a single click, organize them, use them to create citations and bibliographies, and share them with collaborators. Both free and remarkably easy to use, it has been making the lives of students and researchers a little easier for more than a decade. As one of the program’s strengths is its intuitive interface, a book-length guide may seem unnecessary to some users who enjoy exploring software on their own; however, the new edition of Jason Puckett’s Zotero: A Guide for Librarians, Researchers and Educators is nevertheless to be appreciated for the thoroughness with which it explains the program. For new users, it provides clear, step-by-step instructions to all Zotero’s major functions, illustrated with extensive screenshots. It also provides enough detail about Zotero’s advanced features that even experienced users are likely to learn something new. (I’ve been using it for years and had never noticed the “timeline” tool before reading this book.)

Abstract:
Citing and citing sources in academic/scientific studies is a require-ment of publication ethics and is important. In this way, it is possible to reach the source of information. Many problems arose when attribu-tion and citation were given manually years ago. These problems have been solved with the programs that emerged as a result of the deve-lopment of technology/software, and citation and citation have be-come automatic. Among them, Zotero is one of the software that is widely used around the world and has an important place in this field, and it is a useful individual resource management tool. With this prog-ram, 35 different source information used in the study such as books, articles, and encyclopedia articles can be saved either manually or au-tomatically from the internet. These tags, which are recorded only once, are used continuously. In addition, the files of the sources used can be archived in pdf format. Zotero supports over 10,000 different citation styles, which provides great convenience to the researcher. Another aspect of Zotero is that it allows the researcher to follow the sources he uses in each of his studies by classifying his studies. With Zotero, it is possible to add easy, regular, and accurate footnotes and bibliography while writing works such as theses, articles, and books in Word. When the researcher sends an article to a different journal, he has to change the citation style, and doing this manually takes a signi-ficant amount of time. With this software, it is automatically done in a very short time to translate the footnotes and sources of the study in-to any citation style. Thus, researchers have the opportunity to devo-te the time they spend to creating footnotes and bibliography to the quality of the research. In this paper, the use and important steps of Zotero, which ensures that footnotes and bibliography, which are very important in social science research, are given without errors and in a short time, will be emphasized, and different uses specific to the field of Theology will be pointed out.

Abstract:
Indicators or references for scientific papers can be said to be good if they are avoided duplication or plagiarism elements. Plagiarism often occurs among students, especially in writing/compiling scientific works. Many students write citations in their scientific paper but do not include references in the reference list and vice versa. This phenomenon occurs because there are still many students who are not familiar with reference tools such as Zotero, End-note, etc. Based on this, this community service is carried out with the objectives: 1. providing an introduction to the importance of using reference tools to students in compiling scientific papers to reduce the percentage of plagiarism, and 2. showing how to get references to students. This community service is carried out through introduction (socialization) and online training with students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Pawyatan Daha University. This community service is carried out using lectures, discussions, and assignments to students to do installations, create accounts, and finally make citations and references. Community service activities have results showing that students can install and use Zotero in making citations and reference lists.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose an automatic metadata extraction and retrieval system to extract bibliographical information from digital academic documents in portable document formats (PDFs). Design/methodology/approach – The authors use PDFBox to extract text and font size information, a rule-based method to identify titles, and an Hidden Markov Model (HMM) to extract the titles and authors. Finally, the extracted titles and authors (possibly incorrect or incomplete) are sent as query strings to digital libraries (e.g. ACM, IEEE, CiteSeerX, SDOS, and Google Scholar) to retrieve the rest of metadata. Findings – Four experiments are conducted to examine the feasibility of the proposed system. The first experiment compares two different HMM models: multi-state model and one state model (the proposed model). The result shows that one state model can have a comparable performance with multi-state model, but is more suitable to deal with real-world unknown states. The second experiment shows that our proposed model (without the aid of online query) can achieve as good performance as other researcher's model on Cora paper header dataset. In the third experiment the paper examines the performance of our system on a small dataset of 43 real PDF research papers. The result shows that our proposed system (with online query) can perform pretty well on bibliographical data extraction and even outperform the free citation management tool Zotero 3.0. Finally, the paper conducts the fourth experiment with a larger dataset of 103 papers to compare our system with Zotero 4.0. The result shows that our system significantly outperforms Zotero 4.0. The feasibility of the proposed model is thus justified. Research limitations/implications – For academic implication, the system is unique in two folds: first, the system only uses Cora header set for HMM training, without using other tagged datasets or gazetteers resources, which means the system is light and scalable. Second, the system is workable and can be applied to extracting metadata of real-world PDF files. The extracted bibliographical data can then be imported into citation software such as endnote or refworks to increase researchers’ productivity. Practical implications – For practical implication, the system can outperform the existing tool, Zotero v4.0. This provides practitioners good chances to develop similar products in real applications; though it might require some knowledge about HMM implementation. Originality/value – The HMM implementation is not novel. What is innovative is that it actually combines two HMM models. The main model is adapted from Freitag and Mccallum (1999) and the authors add word features of the Nymble HMM (Bikel et al, 1997) to it. The system is workable even without manually tagging the datasets before training the model (the authors just use cora dataset to train and test on real-world PDF papers), as this is significantly different from what other works have done so far. The experimental results have shown sufficient evidence about the feasibility of our proposed method in this aspect.

Abstract:
An overview of phygitalization tools in some library and bibliographic processes is presented. The article briefly discusses the concept of phygitalization. The experience of digital humanities in library-bibliographic research is analyzed. Virtual bibliographic assistants as tools of phygitalization in libraries are listed (popular resources: EndNote, Mendeley, Zotero — comparison of their characteristics is given, less popular resources: ReadCube Papers, RefWorks, Sciwheel, Paperpile. A comparative analysis of specific information services according to a number of criteria is presented. Some successes of phygitalization in library and bibliographic service of users are noted. The problems of development of this emerging trend, its gradual growth into a well-established trend and prospects for wider spread of phygitalization in domestic libraries are formulated. It is shown that phygitalization in public and academic libraries brings many innovations that transform traditional library services.Arguments are given for the fact that the digital services analyzed in the article are exactly the tools of phygitalization of library and bibliographic activities. 1. All these services are digital tools that integrate with traditional methods of working with information, improving them and making them more efficient. 2. Digital services make information more accessible by allowing users to receive and process data regardless of their physical location. 3. These tools provide a user experience that can be personalized to specific needs and preferences. 4. Virtual bibliographic assistants support online collaboration, which combines elements of physical interaction with digital communication tools.

Universities play a crucial role in fostering academic research and ensuring efficient knowledge management among students and faculty members. One of the key aspects of academic writing is effective literature management, which helps researchers organize, retrieve, and cite scholarly sources efficiently. Literature Management Applications (LMAs), such as Mendeley, Zotero, and EndNote, have become indispensable tools for managing references, improving citation accuracy, and enhancing research productivity. This paper explores how universities can promote the adoption of LMAs through digital literacy programs, research workshops, and institutional support. By integrating these applications into academic curricula and research methodologies, universities can significantly improve the quality and integrity of scholarly outputs. The study also discusses challenges such as resistance to technology adoption, lack of awareness, and the need for technical training. Finally, it provides recommendations for universities to develop structured training programs, ensure faculty engagement, and implement policies that encourage the use of literature management tools.

EndNote, alongside other citation management software programs like RefWorks, Mendeley, and Zotero, functions as a crucial instrument for archiving, structuring, accessing, and referencing sources in scholarly composition. This study delves into my personal experience of refining EndNote’s default in-text citations across various reference types, for achieving accurate in-text citations adhering to the American Psychological Association (APA) style. To do so, I compiled my personal, albeit disjointed, experiences with refining the default in-text citation format sourced from the EndNote library. The findings are presented and discussed in a thematic manner, focusing on the in-text citation types and how they can be effectively managed within Microsoft (MS) Word documents. The findings ultimately affirm that EndNote’s default in-text citations can be tailored to accurately cite a broader spectrum of citation types. This implies that judicious use of EndNote facilitates precise and systematic citations, with minimal manual adjustments. This consequently streamlines and accelerates the entirety of the course of academic writing.

Abstract:
End Note is a reference management software programme among many others—such as Mendeley, Ref Works, and Zotero—for storing, managing, retrieving, and using sources for citation in an academic writing. This phenomenological study deals with how the use of the software gives accurate in-text citations of all types of references, such as, books, book sections, theses, journal articles, WebPages, and newspaper articles with reference to APA 7th style of academic writing. For this, I draw reflections on my own direct experience of using End Note for the purpose of citation as a practitioner, tutor, and trainer during the last four years. I categorize the in-text citations into themes on the basis of the way they can be accurately managed in MS (Microsoft) word file, and describe how to enter the input so that the resultant output gives accurate in-text citation with special reference to APA 7th. Drawing on the findings, I have concluded that the use of End Note helps to accurately and systematically manage the citation with very little manual adjustment, and thereby to accelerate and systematize the academic writing as a whole.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study was to determine faculty preferences and attitudes regarding reference management software (RMS) to improve the library’s support and training programs. Design/methodology/approach A short, online survey was emailed to approximately 272 faculty. Findings Survey results indicated that multiple RMS were in use, with faculty preferring Zotero over the library-supported RefWorks. More than 40 per cent did not use any RMS. Research limitations/implications The relatively short length of the survey precluded a more detailed investigation of faculty attitudes. The 20 per cent response rate, although typical of surveys of this type, may over-represent those faculty who have strong attitudes toward RMS. These findings support the necessity of doing more research to establish the parameters of the RMS environment among faculty, with implications for support, instruction and outreach at the institutional level. Practical implications Surveys should be conducted to establish local faculty RMS usage and preferences, as they may differ from both published findings and local expectations. Because it is unlikely that faculty will overwhelmingly use one RMS, libraries should plan to support multiple RMS. Originality/value This study is among the first to investigate the issue of RMS faculty preferences in a liberal arts setting.

Abstract:
Academic writing plays a crucial role in academics including undergraduate students. In addition, the development of technology provides effectiveness for them in the process of academic writing. The present study unravels undergraduate students’ voices on how artificial intelligence (AI) supports their academic writing including kinds of AI applications mostly used by them in enhancing academic writing and challenges in using AI. Anchoring in a qualitative research method, the data of this study were gathered from in-depth interviews with six students at an Indonesian higher education. The findings of the study revealed that AI applications are used to support students’ academic writing. Some AI applications they use include translation tools such as Google Translate, paraphrasing tools such as Quillbot, grammar and spelling checkers such as Grammarly, plagiarism checkers such as Turnitin, and reference management software such as Mendeley and Zotero. Furthermore, they reported that AI could enhance their academic writing by providing better organization, efficiency, consistency, and accuracy. However, critical thinking skills cannot be developed by AI applications. Thus, the finding of the study offers an implication that students can utilize these AI applications to support their work and they should actively participate in the process of academic writing.

Abstract:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing corporate governance (CG), creating a lack of consensus among studies regarding its impact. The purpose of this article is to critically explore scholars’ perspectives on AI’s transformative role in CG, from one side, and suggest the necessary strategies to ensure its responsible and effective integration from another side. The authors have conducted a systematic literature review following the PRISMA flowcharts, analysed 24 indexed journal articles and conference papers using Zotero for reference management, and VOSviewer for bibliometric analysis. The findings start by a double analysis of the AI implementation in CG - ‘nice-to-have’ or ‘must-have’ versus ‘disruption’ or ‘integration’ - categorising the literature into three groups drawing for scholars: ‘enhancers’, ‘integrators’, ‘pioneers’ and a fourth category perceived by the authors, ‘catalysts’. In addition, a set of five strategies for optimising AI use is proposed: ethical frameworks, strengthened governance, skills development, transparency and control mechanisms, and aligning AI with strategic objectives. This study aims to fill two inter-correlated research gaps: exploring how AI is perceived in governance contexts and its potential to integrate with or disrupt traditional structures and establishing a theoretical intersection between the ‘governance of AI’ and the ‘governance by AI’.
