Yudaev, Vasiliy. Hydraulics. ru: INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/996354.

Full text
Abstract:
The textbook corresponds to the general education programs of the general courses "Hydraulics" and "Fluid Mechanics". The basic physical properties of liquids, gases, and their mixtures, including the quantum nature of viscosity in a liquid, are described; the laws of hydrostatics, their observation in natural phenomena, and their application in engineering are described. The fundamentals of the kinematics and dynamics of an incompressible fluid are given; original examples of the application of the Bernoulli equation are given. The modes of fluid motion are supplemented by the features of the transient flow mode at high local resistances. The basics of flow similarity are shown. Laminar and turbulent modes of motion in pipes are described, and the classification of flows from a creeping current to four types of hypersonic flow around the body is given. The coefficients of nonuniformity of momentum and kinetic energy for several flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids are calculated. Examples of solving problems of transient flows by hydraulic methods are given. Local hydraulic resistances, their use in measuring equipment and industry, hydraulic shock, polytropic flow of gas in the pipe and its outflow from the tank are considered. The characteristics of different types of pumps, their advantages and disadvantages, and ways of adjustment are described. A brief biography of the scientists mentioned in the textbook is given, and their contribution to the development of the theory of hydroaeromechanics is shown. The four appendices can be used as a reference to the main text, as well as a subject index. Meets the requirements of the federal state educational standards of higher education of the latest generation. For students of higher educational institutions who study full-time, part-time, evening, distance learning forms of technological and mechanical specialties belonging to the group "Food Technology".

Abstract:
This chapter takes up some recently published arguments that purport to show that a demonstrative, as used on a given occasion, refers either on account of certain features of the context or in virtue of a certain speaker intention, which is distinct from the sort of referential intention that is part of the speaker’s total communicative intention. After these arguments are disposed of, it is argued that there is no good rationale for maintaining that demonstratives refer in their own right. Rather, they have meanings that constrain their literal use. Speakers can and do use them to refer and to communicate what they use them to refer to without there being any referential role for demonstratives themselves to play. If this is right, it raises some interesting questions for standard conceptions of semantics.

Abstract:
Mythographic texts in the imperial age treat space as discontinuous. This is contrary to our modern idea of space, which is tied intimately to cartographical norms. In modern maps, each geographical entity is situated relative to others, obeys calculations of breadth and length, and respects proportionality rules. The space maps depict is full and continuous, standardized and precisely referenced. Space in imperial mythographic texts obeys other standards: it is a series of backdrops, made up of panels, each isolated from the next; space exists primarily to accommodate the deeds of heroes. Mythographic paragraphs chart an autonomous space which floats in a void, undefined by relationships to other enunciative spaces. Toponyms are used as cultural clusters around which a series of references are organized. Space in these texts is a cultural repertoire, emblematic of paideia, a common corpus of names, a shared landscape, before it is a geographical entity.

Lee, Hye-Kyung. Self-referring in Korean, with reference to Korean first-person markers. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786658.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
Lee’s chapter provides a corpus-based analysis of Korean first-person markers by examining the semantic and pragmatic features emerging from their dictionary definitions and their usages in discourse. Specifically, it is demonstrated that the use of the grammatical category of a pronoun does not quite fit the Korean data, because the exceptionally large number of the lexical items are highly specialized in their use. While the first-person markers have the primary function of referring to the speaker, self-referring via first-person markers in Korean is mediated by the speaker’s awareness of his perceived social role or public image, which is expected to conform to honorification norms. The author also argues that the situation with first-person reference in Korean supports the view that the indexical/non-indexical distinction standardly adopted in semantic theory ought to be reconsidered.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter considers how arbitral proceedings unfold once the tribunal is constituted (as discussed in chapter 4), up until the deliberation phase (which is addressed in chapter 7). It starts by identifying the rules that govern the conduct of arbitral proceedings and then examines the interaction between those rules, before describing, by reference to current best practices, the different steps in a ‘standard’ international arbitration. The discussion illustrates, in particular, the articulation between fundamental principles of due process and the parties’ autonomy and arbitrators’ powers in organizing arbitral proceedings. The presentation of arbitral practice is supplemented by a number of model procedural documents: terms of reference for ICC arbitrations, terms of appointment, and a set of specific procedural rules suitable for both institutional and ad hoc arbitration, as well as a standard letter on the appointment of an arbitral secretary. The chapter’s final section is devoted to provisional measures.

Horder, Jeremy. Criminal Misconduct in Office. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198823704.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
The book is principally concerned with the use of the criminal law to deter and punish corruption in politics: from employing family members at public expense to improper spending on elections. Its main focus is the application of the offence of misconduct in public office to Members of Parliament. The criminal law should not be the sole or even the main way to tackle all corruption in politics. However, the offence of misconduct in a public office should nonetheless be seen as a constitutional fundamental. It provides a way in which corrupt conduct on the part of legislators (and other officials) can be deterred and punished with an appropriate label, thereby making them account for the misuse of power by reference to the standards of ordinary people. When other—civil law or regulatory—means prove insufficient, it should be possible for ordinary members of a jury, and not, or not just, for parliamentarians or other officials, to decide whether—for example—the expenditure of public money on legislators’ private income and benefits amounts to a criminal abuse of the public’s trust. This is what I call the ‘bottom-up’ (jury standards-led) as opposed to the ‘top-down’ (officials applying their own standards) view of the role of the criminal law in constitutional contexts. In developing this theme, an important intellectual challenge is also taken up: the provision of a history, philosophy, and politics of the offence of misconduct in office, an offence hitherto little considered by mainstream criminal law theorists in the UK.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the issue of censorship in the British Broadcasting Corporation’s controversial decision to ban the final track, “A Day in the Life,” from the Beatles’ album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967 due to its oblique reference to drug use. More specifically, it analyzes the factors underlying the BBC ban within the context of the cultural environment in which company executives interpreted the recording. The chapter also discusses the BBC mission and its “Green Book,” the BBC Variety Programmes Policy Guide for Writers and Producers, which establishes Britain’s standards for taste in broadcasting.

Christofaki, Rodanthi. Expressing the self in Japanese. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786658.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Christofaki’s chapter provides an analysis of terms used for first-person reference in Japanese, addressing the question of how de se thought is expressed in a language with a multitude of expressions for self-reference, and in particular what aspects of the self such expressions map to. The analysis shows that in addition to the direct reference account, predicated of first-person pronouns in languages such as English, these terms also convey rich conceptual and expressive content and as such defy the standard Kaplanian (1989) classification. The chapter next moves to a critical assessment of the plausibility of a linguistic relativity account of the self which has been based on these data, and supports a universalist view instead, on which, on the one hand, different aspects (or facets) of the self are distinguished, but on the other they sum up to a cross-culturally comparable self.

Full text
Abstract:
Quality assurance has its roots in industry and therefore is strongly influenced by concepts from business, hence the reference to the definition of the term ‘quality’ according to the International Standard Organization (ISO), for example. In order to better understand the various concepts of quality assurance, this chapter clarifies concepts such as ‘effectiveness’, ‘efficiency’, ‘patient-centredness’, and ‘equity’. Of major importance in clinical medicine are guidelines, standards, recommendations, and their grade of evidence. Guidelines in particular have the advantage of facilitation of the practice of evidence-based medicine in that they can provide a practically orientated summary of the relevant research literature. Other important tools for quality assurance include ‘plan–do–study–act’ (PDSA) cycles, process mapping, monitoring of outcome indicators, auditing, and peer review. Patient safety is another rather young discipline in academic medicine. Triggered by the landmark publication of To Err is Human by the US Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 1999, patient safety gained widespread attention in healthcare. Anaesthesiology as a typical safety discipline was among the first to adopt safety measures such as ‘incident reporting’ or ‘human factors training’ years before the IOM report. Safety is closely related to outcome and therefore mortality, morbidity, as well as adverse events in general have to be considered. In order to improve, safety lessons can be learned from the so-called high-reliability organizations and transferred into clinical practice.

Garner, Bryan A. Garner’s Modern English Usage. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acref/9780190491482.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Over 6000 entriesWith more than a thousand new entries and more than 2,300 word-frequency ratios, the magisterial fourth edition ofGarner’s Modern English Usagereflects usage lexicography at its finest. It delights while providing instruction on skillful, persuasive, and vivid writing. Garner liberates English from two extremes: both from the hidebound “purists” who mistakenly believe that split infinitives and sentence-ending prepositions are malfeasances and from the linguistic relativists who believe that whatever people say or write must necessarily be accepted. The judgments here are backed up not just by a lifetime of study but also by an empirical grounding in the largest linguistic corpus ever available. In this fourth edition, Garner has made extensive use of corpus linguistics to include ratios of standard terms as compared against variants in modern print sources. No other resource provides as comprehensive, reliable, and empirical a guide to current English usage. For all concerned with writing and editing,Garner’s Modern English Usagewill prove invaluable as a desk reference. Garner illustrates with actual examples, cited with chapter and verse, all the linguistic blunders that modern writers and speakers are prone to, whether in word choice, syntax, phrasing, punctuation, or pronunciation. This is the liveliest and most compulsively readable reference work for writers of our time.

Gert, Joshua. Primitive Colors. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198785910.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is both an account of the nature of color and color perception, and an exercise in neo-pragmatist theorizing. Neo-pragmatism rejects representationalism, which is the standard strategy for solving “placement problems” in philosophy. Instead, it makes use of deflationary accounts of truth and reference. In the domain of color, the result is color primitivism: a view of color according to which colors are sui generis properties of objects, irreducible to physical or dispositional properties. Objective colors are also—contrary to current dogma—insufficiently determinate in their nature to allow them to be associated with precise points in standard color spaces. Rather, standard color spaces are appropriate for the description of color appearances, which are to be understood in line with a moderate form of adverbialism. A central analogy here is between the perceptible three-dimensional shape of an object and the various ways in which that shape appears from various perspectives. The book also offers an account of color constancy, a moderated version of representationalism about visual experience, and a criticism of the thesis of the transparency of experience. Also included are detailed discussions of rival views, including those of Alex Byrne and David Hilbert, C. L. Hardin, Jonathan Cohen, Mark Kalderon, Keith Allen, and Derek Brown.

Full text
Abstract:
The scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) was invented by Binnig and Rohrer and received a Nobel Prize of Physics in 1986. Together with the atomic force microscope (AFM), it enables non-destructive observing and mapping atoms and molecules on solid surfaces down to a picometer resolution. A recent development is the non-destructive observation of wavefunctions in individual atoms and molecules, including nodal structures inside the wavefunctions. STM and AFM have become indespensible instruments for scientists of various disciplines, including physicists, chemists, engineers, and biologists to visualize and utilize the microscopic world around us. Since the publication of the first edition in 1993, this book has been recognized as a standard introduction for everyone that starts working with scanning probe microscopes, and a useful reference book for those more advanced in the field. After an Overview chapter accessible for newcomers at an entry level presenting the basic design, scientific background, and illustrative applications, the book has three Parts. Part I, Principles, provides the most systematic and detailed theory of its scientific bases from basic quantum mechancis and condensed-metter physics in all available literature. Quantitative analysis of its imaging mechanism for atoms, molecules, and wavefunctions is detailed. Part II, Instrumentation, provides down to earth descriptions of its building components, including piezoelectric scanners, vibration isolation, electronics, software, probe tip preparation, etc. Part III, Related methods, presenting two of its most important siblings, scanning tunnelling specgroscopy and atomic force miscsoscopy. The book has five appendices for background topics, and 405 references for further readings.

This chapter discusses claims process procedures. Topics covered include whether an existing set of recognized procedural rules is incorporated by reference and, where there is such incorporation, what changes, if any, are made to reflect the particular circumstances of the claims process; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to evidence and standards of proof; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to the language(s) of the claims process, and, if applicable, how translation and interpretation services are provided; whether the constituting instruments or procedural rules include special provisions with respect to oral hearings or decisions based on documents only; the extent to which various procedures are conducted by means other than in-person proceedings; and the use of special mass claims processing methodologies. An Editors’ Commentary and separate Annotations show how each of these Mass Claims Processes has handled the matter.

Although Bester spoke disapprovingly of his early career, dismissing all of his stories written before 1950 as juvenilia, he produced several promising works in the early 1940s, most notably “The Probable Man,” “Adam and No Eve,” and “Hell Is Forever.” These stories appeared in leading markets such as Astounding and Unknown but pushed beyond them, at once invoking and subverting the conventions of the standard techno-adventure. This chapter demonstrates that even at this early stage in his career, Bester experimented with SF reading protocols in highly self-conscious ways. It also traces the emergence of key elements of his approach, including the use of hybrid SF-mystery plots, metanarration, metafictional references, the frame story, pastiche, extra-coding, and ambiguous resolutions

Ainsworth, Sean. Neonatal Formulary. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198840787.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Neonatal Formulary bridges a gap between a standard formulary (stating doses, indications, etc.) and a standard neonatal textbook by expanding information about the conditions for which each drug is used. Much of drug use during pregnancy, lactation, and in neonates and young infants is ‘off license’ (i.e. using licensed drugs but for an indication that is outside the licensed use—in many cases simply because the studies and the licensing application did not include data about neonatal use). The book offers information to allow practitioners to make informed choices whether to use such a drug or not by presenting data from published studies to support such a use. Part 1 concentrates on drug prescribing and drug administration, presenting general information on drug storage, drug licensing, and drug prescribing. It also explains to the reader why the metabolism of drugs differs in premature and sick infants and why the practice of extrapolating doses from adult studies is wrong. Patient safety, excipients, and therapies that affect drug metabolism (such as therapeutic hypothermia) are also covered. Part 2 consists of drug monographs for over 250 drugs that may find use in the neonatal population but which nonetheless may also find use outside the neonatal unit. Each monograph is divided into sections covering use, pharmacology, treatment, drug interactions, or other administration information, supply, and administration, and references. The monographs also contain links to Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and national guidelines supported by bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence or the Royal Colleges. Part 3 contains brief notes on a range of additional drugs and groups of drugs that are often taken by mothers during pregnancy, labour, or during breast feeding where effects on either the fetus or infant can be seen. This information will help to provide safe and effective prescribing of drugs to all mothers and their babies.

Abstract:
<p><b>Bentonites</b> are rocks mostly consisting of swelling clay minerals. They were first described from the Cretaceous Benton Shale near Rock River, Wyoming, USA. </p> <p> Because of their useful properties (e.g. highly adsorbent, cation exchanging, swelling), bentonites have many uses, in industry (among them as drilling mud, purification agent, binder, adsorbent, paper production), culture (for e.g. pottery) and medicine/cosmetics/cat litter, civil engineering, and in the future even in the disposal of high-level nuclear waste. </p> <p> Particular chemical characteristics of bentonite clay minerals are rather variable but critically determine their suitability for a particular application. </p> <p> The 15 specialist authors discuss bentonite terminology, classification and genesis and use in eight chapters. Individual chapters deal with the methods bentonites are analysed with, their properties and performance in terms of parameters such as cation exchange capactiy, rheology, coagulation concentraion, water uptake capacity, free swelling, and electrical resistivity (amongst others). </p> <p> A chapter is dedicated to the sources of bentonites, the technology employed to produce them, and how quality control is carried out both in the mine and the laboratory. A further chapter is dedicated to methods of processing the mined material, different activation methods, drying, grinding, and purification. </p> <P> Use cases for bentonites are discussed in a chapter of its own. References, a section on norms and standards, and a list of abbreviations complete the text. </p> <p> The volume addresses students, researchers, and professionals in the mineral industry dealing with bentonite and their clay-mineral constituents, quality assessement and control, and persons that use bentonites in their products. </p>

Mills, Kurt, and Cian O’Driscoll. From Humanitarian Intervention to the Responsibility to Protect. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acrefore/9780190846626.013.440.

Abstract:
In contrast with humanitarian access or the provision of humanitarian assistance, humanitarian intervention is commonly defined as the threat or use of force by a state to prevent or end widespread and grave violations of the fundamental human rights of individuals other than its own citizens, without the permission of the state within whose territory force is applied. In support of their cause, advocates of humanitarian intervention often draw upon and reference the authority of the notional “just war.” The four main ways by which humanitarian intervention has been connected to the idea of the just war relate to the ideals of self-determination, punishment, responsibility, and conditional sovereignty. For a humanitarian intervention to be considered legitimate, there must be a just cause for intervention; the use of force must be a last resort; it must meet the standard of proportionality; and there must be a good likelihood that the use of force will contribute to a positive humanitarian outcome. The historical practice of humanitarian intervention can be traced from the nineteenth century to the recognition of the Responsibility to Protect by the World Summit in 2005 and its application in Darfur. Major conceptual debates surrounding humanitarian intervention include the problematic relation between sovereignty and human rights, the legal status of intervention, the issue of multilateralism versus unilateralism, and the quest for criteria for intervention.

Böttcher, Winfried, ed. Europas vergessene Visionäre. Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.5771/9783845288352.

Abstract:
A united Europe needs new visions to take it forward. This is even more relevant in times of acute crises, such as the financial and banking crisis, the eurozone crisis or the refugee crisis, and in times of other events which threaten solidarity in Europe, such as Brexit. In his book ‘Europas vergessene Visionäre’ (Europe’s forgotten Visionaries), Winfried Böttcher reveals how visions once arose. This outstanding work brings together important European thinkers with great visions for Europe who have been unfairly forgotten. In doing so, it builds on Böttcher’s successful standard reference work ‘Klassiker des europäischen Denkens’ (Quintessential Figures in European Thinking). Just like quintessential thinkers, visionaries also contribute to validating the past and the present and to shaping the future. In this book, 25 eminent authors from 18 universities and academic institutions focus on these ‘forgotten’ visionaries for Europe from 13 countries. They reveal to us how different visions can be in depicting the future.

Ritchie, Donald A. Introduction: The Evolution of Oral History. Edited by Donald A. Ritchie. Oxford University Press, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780195339550.013.0001.

Abstract:
Oral history is as old as the first recorded history and as new as the latest digital recorder. Long before the practice acquired a name and standard procedures, historians conducted interviews to gain insight into great events, beginning at least as early as Thucydides, who used oral history for his account of the Peloponnesian wars. In the eighteenth century, Samuel Johnson commented that “all history was at first oral,” but the term “oral history” was first used in reference to troubadours and oral traditions. However, the study of oral history was taken up seriously only during the twentieth century. Oral history did not attach itself to interviewing until an article appeared in the New Yorker in 1942 about Joe Gould, a Greenwich Village bohemian who claimed to be compiling “An Oral History of Our Time”. This article further discusses the importance of oral history projects and oral historians at the same time.
