Abstract:
In the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI), herbs and spices are in great demand, mainly for culinary purposes. These crops include thyme, basil, oregano, parsley, chives, fennel, rosemary and marjoram. Based on estimated total marketable yield of 25 growers in 1993, 10,264 kg of fresh culinary herbs were produced in USVI. During the same period, 21,207 kg of various herbs were imported to the USVI. These data clearly show that local demand for herbs exceeds domestic production. Constraints which limit increased production in USVI include small farm size, limited water resources, absence of mechanizati

The Caribbean region is one major source of most herbs and spices consumed in the U.S. Although the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) is part of the Caribbean, local production of herbs and spices does not contribute significantly to exports into the U.S. market. Morphological features are reviewed and compared with Mansonia flaveola, a species previously reported in the USVI. Two powerful hurricanes successively passed close to US Virgin Islands in September 2017. Hurricane Irma developed into CAT5 with the lowest pressure around 914 hPa on 5th of September and passed north of USVI. Sequentially, CAT5 Hurricane Maria followed the similar track, but passed south of USVI. Two CAT5 hurricanes gave devastated damage along the Caribbean Islands. It is a rare event having two CAT5 with similar tracks within two weeks. This study presents hindcasts of waves and storm surge for the two hurricanes and discusses coastal damages with our survey data targeting on USVI.

Abstract. As far back as history has been written in the islands today known as the US Virgin Islands (USVI), residents have had to endure and survive costly and deadly onslaughts from tropical storms such as the 1867 San Narciso Hurricane, Hurricane Hugo and Hurricane Marilyn. Keenly alerted by recent tragic events in the Indian Ocean in 2004, in Haiti in 2010 and in Japan in 2011, the USVI was reminded that it had suffered its greatest tsunami impact in a well-documented event that had followed the 1867 hurricane by fewer than three weeks. AbstractRats are social animals. For example, rats exhibit mutual-reward preferences, preferring choice alternatives that yield a reward to themselves as well as to a conspecific, over alternatives that yield a reward only to themselves. We have recently hypothesized that such mutual-reward preferences might be the result of reinforcing properties of ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) emitted by the conspecifics. USVs in rats serve as situation-dependent socio-affective signals with important communicative functions. To test this possibility, here, we trained rats to enter one of two compartments

Abstract:
The purpose of this Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering technical note (CHETN) is to summarize a portion of recently published work (Young, Kress, et al. 2022) that used archival Automatic Identification System (AIS) data to measure the commercial vessel traffic connected to Puerto Rican and US Virgin Island (USVI) port areas from January 2015 to June 2020. Vessel movement derived from AIS was aggregated to construct a network that measured the port-to-port connectivity for all ports in the network and the interconnectivity of traffic between those ports. AIS data provided a description of vess

Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the continuing efforts towards incorporating rapid tidal time-series reconstruction and prediction capabilities into the Coastal Hazards System (CHS) and the Stochastic Storm Simulation System (StormSim). The CHS (Nadal-Caraballo et al. 2020) is a national effort for the quantification of coastal storm hazards, including a database and web tool (https://chs.erdc.dren.mil) for the deployment of results from the Probabilistic Coastal Hazard Analysis (PCHA) framework. These PCHA products are developed from regional studies s

Abstract:
Reef fish populations play a vital ecological and economic role in the coral reef ecosystems of Florida and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). However, these populations face significant threats from habitat degradation, rising global temperature, coral diseases, and increased fishing pressures. Traditional fishery-dependent data have proven inadequate for accurately assessing reef fish populations, necessitating the development of standardized, fishery-independent methodology. This document presents the Cooperative Multiagency Reef Fish Monitoring Protocol, a unified methodology designed to asse
