Abstract:
This chapter describes various approaches to concurrency, or “parallel programming”. An overview of high performance computing is followed with a review of Flynn’s taxonomy of parallel computing. Three methods for implementing parallel code using the frameworks provided by MPI, openMP, and C++ threads are presented. The use of the C++ constructs mutex and future to resolve issues of synchronization are discussed. All methods are illustrated with an embarrassingly parallel application to a Monte Carlo integral and common pitfalls are presented. The chapter closes with a discussion and example o

Digital computers are built from hardware of great simplicity. First, they are built from devices with two states: on or off, one or zero, high voltage or low voltage, or logical TRUE or FALSE. Second, the devices are connected with extremely fine connections, currently on the order of size of a large virus. Their utility, value, and perceived extreme complexity lie in the software controlling them. Different devices have been used to build computers: relays, vacuum tubes, transistors, and integrated circuits. Theoretically, all can run the same software, only slower or faster. More exotic tec

Abstract:
This book examines in detail the legal implications of cloud computing. In essence, 'the cloud' is a way of delivering computing resources as a utility service via the Internet. It is evolving very rapidly with substantial investments being made in infrastructure, platforms, and applications, all delivered 'as a service'. The demand for cloud resources is enormous, driven by such developments as the deployment on a vast scale of mobile apps and the rapid emergence of 'Big Data'. The book explains what cloud computing is and how it works; analyses contractual relationships between cloud service

Digital signal processing (DSP) is one of the ‘foundational’ engineering topics of the modern world, without which technologies such the mobile phone, television, CD and MP3 players, WiFi and radar, would not be possible. A relative newcomer by comparison, statistical machine learning is the theoretical backbone of exciting technologies such as automatic techniques for car registration plate recognition, speech recognition, stock market prediction, defect detection on assembly lines, robot guidance and autonomous car navigation. Statistical machine learning exploits the analogy between intelli

In this chapter, we will present the technical aspects of atomistic spin dynamics, in particular how the method can be implemented in an actual computer software. This involves calculation of effective field and creation of neighbour lists for setting up the geometry of the system of interest as well as choosing a suitable integrator scheme for the SLL (or SLLG) equation. We also give examples of extraction and processing of relevant observables that are common output from simulations. Atomistic spin dynamics simulations could be a computationally heavy tool but it is also very well adapted fo

Jurisdiction is the foundational concept for both national laws and international law as it provides the link between the sovereign government and its territory, and ultimately its people. The internet challenges this concept at its root: data travels across the internet without respecting political borders or territory. This book is about this Jurisdictional Challenge created by internet technologies. The Jurisdictional Challenge arises as civil disputes, criminal cases, and regulatory action span different countries, rising questions as to the international competence of courts, law enforcem
