Saleh, Mehdi. "Virtualization and self-organization for utility computing." Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5026.

Abstract:
We present an alternative paradigm for utility computing when the delivery of service is subject to binding contracts; the solution we propose is based on resource virtualization and a self-management scheme. A virtual cloud aggregates set virtual machines to work in concert for the tasks specified by the service agreement. A first step for the establishment of a virtual cloud is to create a scale-free overlay network through a biased random walk; scale-free networks enjoy a set of remarkable properties such as: robustness against random failures, favorable scaling, and resilience to congestio

More and more clouds with diversified properties have been built. Many of them span multiple geographical locations over the globe, imposing time-varying costs on and offering different service proximities to users. Clouds could be private or public, requiring different levels of administration effort and providing different levels of freedom to control. Hybrid clouds, which blend together multiple public and private clouds, possess properties of both types. Based on these diversified properties, multiple clouds have the potential to provide services with higher scalability, lower operational

Abstract:
Utility Computing is one of the most discussed business models in the context of Cloud Computing. Service providers are more and more pushed into the role of utilities by their customer's expectations. Subsequently, the demand for predictable service availability and pay-per-use pricing models increases. Furthermore, for providers, a new opportunity to optimise resource usage offers arises, resulting from new virtualisation techniques. In this context, the control of service quality and profit depends on a deep understanding of the representation of the relationship between business and techni

Activity recognition in monitored environments where the occupants are elderly or disabled is currently a popular research topic and is being proposed as a possible solution that may help maintain the independence of an aging population within their homes, where these homes are adapted as monitored environments. Current activity recognition systems implement ubiquitous sensing or video surveillance techniques which inherently, to varying degrees, impinge on the privacy of the occupants of these environments. Today, heterogeneous computing systems are widely used to meet the increasing demand for high-performance computing. These systems commonly use powerful and energy-efficient accelerators to augment general-purpose processors (i.e., CPUs). The graphic processing unit (GPU) is one such accelerator. Originally designed solely for graphics processing, GPUs have evolved into programmable processors that can deliver massive parallel processing power for general-purpose applications.
