The focus of this thesis was to analyze the least cost of producing rations for ducks in three age categories from a mixture of conventional feed ingredients and three different processed food waste products and to examine the financial and economic feasibility of establishing an industrial plant to produce these food waste products in the Montreal region. The first part of the thesis was investigated through the use of a linear programming model. This work was stimulated by the fact that supplies of fossil fuels are finite, while there are abundant renewable forms of energy waiting to be tapped. The current fossil fuels store is reviewed before identifying usable forms of renewable energy which could replace or supplement fossil fuels. Bagasse - a solid byproduct in sugarcane milling - is then described in detail as a typical lignocellulosic waste which forms part of a larger class of renewable energy sources called biomass. The chemical and physical characteristics, as well as world-wide regions of production of bagasse are described.

Abstract:
Food waste accounts for about 1/3 of the municipal waste generated in Hong Kong. Using food waste as major ingredients to produce fish feed pellets could ease part of the disposal pressure on the existing landfill sites. The present study focused on the use of food wastes and feed supplements (prebiotic fibres and Chinese herbs) for rearing freshwater fish (grass carp, bighead, mud carp and Nile tilapia) in Hong Kong. Two isonitrogenous formulations, Food Waste Diet A (FWA), consisted of 53% cereal, 10% fruit and vegetables, 8% bone meal, 4% other food waste, 10% fishmeal, 15% corn meal and F

Abstract:
Regulations for on-package information and voluntary claims are designed to improve the flow of information between food manufacturers and consumers. Of particular importance are exaggerated product claims, where a claimed product is of higher quality nutritionally with regard to the claimed nutrient(s), but lower quality with regard to other nutrients (e.g., it contains more of a less healthy nutrient, or lower amounts of a desirable nutrient). The objective of this research is to assess the extent to which exaggerated product claims result in market failure in the processed food market. Thi

Abstract:
Four meat spoilage organisms were grown at 4$ sp circ$C for 7 d, in an aqueous extract of meat (Meat Juice Medium), and the levels of various nutrients in the extracts were measured. At an agitation rate of 50 rev$ cdot$min$ sp{-1},$ the four species reached viable counts of 10$ sp8$ Colony Forming Units (CFU)$ cdot$ml$ sp{-1},$ and the order of nutrient utilization was as follows: (1) glucose, (2) gluconate and urea, (3) glycerol, (4) glucose-6-phosphate. Several substrates were still present in the growth medium at the end of the growth period, namely lactate, glucose-6-phosphate and the two

Dissertação de Mestrado em Segurança Alimentar apresentada à Faculdade de Farmácia<br>Food waste is a subject of great importance for society today, since it causes a high negative social, economic and environmental impact. That is why reducing food loss and waste is one of the greatest goals to be achieved worldwide. The use of food not normally consumed and / or the use of food subproducts is an important practice in combating food loss and waste and, consequently, reducing it. Thus, the Social Action Services of the University of Coimbra have developed some ways to improve the use of food in
