Introduction: Hamartin has been shown to mediate the endogenous resistance of Cornu Ammonis 3 (CA3) neurons to ischaemia. Proposed mechanisms concern the inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) which could promote productive autophagy and prevent endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. A small molecule targeted at these pathways could protect neurons and buy valuable time for recanalization therapy for stroke. Methods: In vivo, the modified four vessel occlusion model of global cerebral ischaemia was used in male Wistar rats. A temporal and spatial profile for hamartin and mTOR proteins

This thesis is an analysis and interpretation of six chapters from al-Nabulusi's commentary. One of these is an account of his intentions for writing the commentary and the other five are commentaries on parts of the Fusus al-hikam. These chapters chosen from al-Nabulusi's commentary treat important subjects in the Fusus al-hikam which exemplify Ibn 'Arabi's thought particularly well. They are concerned with certain issues which were perceived to have a special importance in the Islamic religious tradition. One issue, for example, is that of Pharaoh's profession of faith which was a prominent

This thesis compares the consultation conducted by the Law Commission ('LC') and the Australian Law Reform Commission ('ALRC'). Its first goal is to describe the process in detail, which begins with the purposes of consultation. Next, the process of consultation is described with a discussion of each of the techniques employed by the Commissions. Although there is much overlap in how the LC and the ALRC consult, they do approach the exercise differently and these differences are discussed. The description of the Commissions' consultation concludes by examining its impact. A second goal is to c

The work contained in this thesis examines how the properties of polyester film substrates affect the structure and performance of thin coatings vacuum-deposited upon them, particularly with regards to their function as gas barriers for use in packaging. By modifying the surface of a PET film prior to deposition, with either oxygen or argon plasma, an increase in adhesion between the polymer and coating by 50% occurs for both aluminium and SiOₓ layers. A reduction in the density of pinhole defects is also observed after such treatment. A set of silicon oxide (SiOₓ) coatings, deposited using a

The 9 + 2 microtubule axoneme of flagella and cilia represents one of the most iconic structures built by eukaryotic cells and organisms. Some cilia are motile, whilst others serve as sensory organelles, and can variously possess 9+2, 9+0 axonemes and other associated structures. The recent emergence of ciliary dysfunction as a cause of human disease has renewed interest in these organelles, with several genomic and proteomic studies of cilia and flagella now published from various systems. I identified ten genes from such screens, and functionally characterised them in the flagellate protozoa

Rapid waning of antibody and vaccine effectiveness is observed following infant immunisation with protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines. This is despite the demonstrable presence of immunological memory. However, disease can develop within a few days of carriage acquisition of encapsulated bacteria. Persistence of functional antibody, therefore, appears to be the key determinant of long-term protection against invasive bacterial diseases. Antibody persistence is thought to depend on the survival of long-lived plasma cells and memory B cells generated in germinal centres (GC). Using the ELI

The mouse monoclonal antibody MRC OX-2 recognises a rat cell surface glycoprotein of MR about 45,000 which is expressed on brain and lymphoid tissues. The OX-2 antigen is of interest because its tissue distribution and biochemical properties are similar to Thy-1, a cell surface antigen which is known to have a structure resembling an immunoglobulin domain. In this thesis, the structure of OX-2 antigen is determined to evaluate whether it shares sequence homology with Thy-1 and immunoglobulins. OX-2 antigen was purified from rat brain by monoclonal antibody affinity chromatography, a

During the course of the Spanish Civil War Nazi Germany's intervention on behalf of General Francisco Franco and his fellow insurgents became increasingly dominated by economic considerations. National Socialist policies vis-à-vis Nationalist Spain developed into a programme of large-scale economic exploitation. This thesis is concerned with the graphical modelling of multivariate data. The main aim of graphical modelling is to provide an easy to understand visual representation of, often complex, data relationships by fitting graphs to data. The graphs consist of nodes denoting random variables and connecting lines or edges are used to depict variable dependencies. Equivalently, the absence of particular edges in a graph describe conditional independencies between random variables. The resulting structure is called a conditional independence graph. Haemophilia B Leyden is a rare form of haemophilia B in which patients suffer from a bleeding disorder in childhood but completely recover in adulthood. These patients all have point mutations in the gene promoter between nucleotides -21→+13 which cause this altered expression pattern. An unusual patient with a -26 G→C mutation, haemophilia B Brandenburg, did not recover from his bleeding disorder during puberty. It was suggested that this was due to the disruption of the binding of the androgen receptor (AR) to an androgen response element (ARE) in the promoter (-36→- 22). To obtain further e
