Hwang, Ann. "Synthesis of UV-absorbing carrier ampholytes for characterization of isoelectric membranes." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/4333.

Abstract:
Isoelectric focusing is one of the most important techniques in protein separations. Preparative-scale isoelectric separations often use buffering membranes (isoelectric membranes), but there are no good known methods for the characterization of their pI values. Therefore, UV-absorbing carrier ampholyte mixtures (UVCAs) have been synthesized, analytically characterized, and utilized for the characterization of the pI value of a buffering membrane. To synthesize the UVCAs, addition of a UV-absorbing electrophile, 3-phenoxypropyl bromide (PhOPrBr), to a pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA) carrier ampho

Abstract:
When plants are exposed to multiple environmental stress factors, one form of stress can affect the response to another stress. This study used seedlings of a new cultivar of wheat(Triticum aestivum L. cv. 1862), grown under factorial combinations of two levels of ultraviolet-B (UV-B)radiation, two salinity regimes and two levels of iron treatment in chelator-buffered nutrient solutions in a growth chamber. A number of morphological and physiological measurements were made. The accumulation of chlorophyll, UVabsorbing compounds and proline in shoots, as well as phytosiderophores (PSs) in root

Abstract:
Abstract Previous reports on the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on bryophytes have been equivocal. This study shows that mosses not only respond to enhanced UV-B, but they are affected by changes in ambient radiation. The studies were conducted with two model species common in northern environments; red-stemmed feather moss (Pleurozium schreberi) and juniper haircap moss (Polytrichum juniperinum). Both species showed high concentrations of methanol-extractable UV-absorbing compounds (UACs) with high spring-time and early-summer UV, whereas in P. juniperinum, the concentration was affecte

Abstract:
Palynology, the study of organic microfossils, is an important tool for improving our understanding of past environments and landscapes. Palynology provides a wealth of information from which climatic and environmental conditions can be inferred. However, inferred climatic and environmental conditions are often open to interpretation. Assumptions made about past climate conditions from pollen assemblages often rely on qualitative understanding of modern-day vegetation distributions, rather than empirical relationships. Historic anthropogenic impact on the environment must also be inferred, and
