The effect of carbonic anhydrase inhibition with acetazolamide (Acz) on CO2 output (V˙co 2) and ventilation (V˙e) kinetics was examined during moderate- and heavy-intensity exercise. Seven men [24 ± 1 (SE) yr] performed cycling exercise during control (Con) and Acz (10 mg/kg body wt iv) sessions. Each subject performed step transitions (6 min) in work rate from 0 to 100 W [below ventilatory threshold (<V˙eT)] and to an O2 uptake corresponding to ∼50% of the difference between the work rate atV˙eT and peak O2 uptake [above ventilatory threshold (>V˙eT)].V˙e and gas exchange were measured

Abstract:
The three elements to be treated in this chapter (Fe, Co, Ni) are the sixth, seventh, and eighth members of the first transition series. The first five members (Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn) have been treated in previous chapters (Chapters 12, 13, and 14). The ten elements of this first transition series (Sc through Zn) are characterized by electron activity in the 4s–3d levels. All elements in the 3d transition series are metals, and many of their compounds tend to be colored as a result of unpaired electrons. Most of the elements have a strong tendency to form complex ions due to participation of the d electrons in bonding. Unlike the previous three elements (V, Cr, Mn), these three do not show a variety of oxidation states. The higher oxidation states are almost absent in compounds, Fe showing principally the II and III, Co the II and III, and Ni only the II. The III states are less stable than the II states unless they are stabilized by complex formation. The resemblance of these three elements is notable, they being more like each other than they are to the elements below them. a. E–pH diagram. The E–pH diagram in Figure 15.1 shows Fe in oxidation states of 0, II, and III. This diagram, which involves iron at 10−1.0 M is oversimplified in several ways. The Fe(II) and Fe(III) cations are more properly designated as Fe(HOH)6+2 and Fe(HOH)6+3, reflecting the coordination number of 6. The region just to the left of the Fe+2/Fe(OH)2 line involves Fe(OH)+, and the region just to the left of the Fe+3/FeO(OH) line involves numerous hydroxo complexes such as Fe(HOH)5OH+2 and Fe(HOH)4(OH)2+. At very high pH values, there is a tendency for Fe(OH)2 to be converted to HFeO2−, and at very high E values, the powerful oxidant, red-purple FeO4−2 can be produced. When these latter five species are introduced, Figure 15.2 results. This, too, is probably simplified since it is known that other species are present, such as Fe2(OH)4+4 and Fe3(OH)4+5. The species FeO4−2 can only be prepared in a very strong base.

Abstract:
The general principles discussed in Chapter 3 also apply to reactions of organometallic complexes. Because these systems do not have a wide range of structurally similar complexes with different metal atoms for comparative studies across the Periodic Table, comparisons are usually made down a particular group. However, there is a wide range of ligands available for studies of entering and leaving group effects. This area has been the subject of several recent reviews. A major difference from the systems discussed in Chapter 3 is that many of these complexes are soluble in organic solvents, including hydrocarbons. This can minimize the complicating factor of solvent coordination, but these solvents often have quite low dielectric constants so that various types of preassociation are more probable. The metal carbonyl family of compounds is typical of the range of structures and reactivities of organometallic complexes. The rate of CO exchange was examined in early studies, and this work is the subject of a recent review. The order of reaction rates is as follows: Where the rate law has been determined, the reaction is first-order in [M(CO)R] and zero-order in [CO]. This implies a D mechanism, since a solvent intermediate is unlikely for the "noncoordinating" solvents. This mechanism also is probable for other ligand substitutions. The main mechanistic exception to the above generalizations is V(CO)6, which has an Ia mechanism for PR3 substitution reactions. This compound is unique in that it is the only 17-electron metal carbonyl and also is by far the most labile. Some kinetic results for substitution on V(CO)6 in hexane are given in Table 5.1. The substitution rates have rather low ΔH* values, and the negative ΔS* values are typical of an associative process. The rates for various entering groups correlate with the basicity rather than the size, as measured by the cone angle. It has been suggested that formation of a 19-electron associative intermediate from a 17-electron reactant is much more favorable than a 20-electron intermediate from an 18-electron reactant.

Abstract:
Our starting point is not hidden, nor is it far off. It is not an extreme place like Mono Lake or Freswick Castle, but it is a central concept expressed on a single page. The periodic table is the center of chemistry, and therefore of this book. You can spot it at a distance from its vaguely cathedral-like shape. You can see the chemical symbols that it contains on magnets and T-shirts and restaurant signs. Its regular columns are not quite symmetric, but that is because it has been twisted out of its natural shape by the contingencies of history. Rearrange it just a little and a simple mathematical pattern appears. To see this pattern, imagine that the periodic table is made out of beads on an abacus, arranged in the familiar U shape. Then push all the beads to the left: … Row 1 = H- He Row 2 = Li- Be- B- C- N- O- F- Ne Row 3 = Na- Mg- Al- Si- P- S- Cl- Ar Row 4 = K- Ca- Sc- Ti- V- Cr- Mn- Fe- Co- Ni- Cu- Zn- Ga- Ge- As- Se- Br- Kr Row 5 = Rb- Sr- Y- Zr- Nb- Mo- Tc- Ru- Rh- Pd- Ag- Cd- In- Sn- Sb- Te- I- Xe … By row, there are 2, 8, 8, 18, and 18 elements. The pattern continues in the rows below, but it is obscured by the fact that on most tables 14 elements have been moved out of the sixth and seventh rows. On the table here I have put them where they belong. These rows have 32 elements each. This can be simplified even more. The rows increase, first by 2, then by 6 more (2 + 6 = 8), then by 10 more (2 + 6 + 10 = 18), then by 14 (2 + 6 + 10 + 18 = 32). The series 2, 6, 10, 14 is the doubles of counting up by odd numbers: 1, 3, 5, 7. Put another way, each row is equal to 2n + 1 with n = integers from 0.
