Detta examensarbete handlar om att aktivera hamnområdet intill Vadstena slott och väcka historien till liv genom att på nytt ge platsen en hamnpaviljong. Sedan 1850talet fram till för tio år sedan, har det under två perioder funnits en hamnpaviljong intill slottet och vallgraven. Den nya paviljongen bestående av restaurang, utställning, hamnfaciliteter och bastu, är baserad och inspirerad av platsens rika arkitektoniska omgivning och förflutna. The early nineteenth century saw the emergence of institutional psychiatry across Europe. Aware that Sweden had fallen behind in this development, Parliament decreed in 1823 that a number of specialised institutions for the care of the insane were to be established. Studying catalogue descriptions of manuscripts and incunabula in Uppsala University library, the author has aimed to examine the development over a period of time, concentrating on way and place of acquisition, and desired types of texts.A short description and history of the monastery and its library is given. The purpose of this thesis is to modify the image of pre-industrial towns as towns of minor importance, i.e. passive and with low population and agrarian economical structure. The questions linked to the theoretical problem of this study are derived from these arguments. This dissertation contains an edition of Dyalogus super Reuelacionibus beate Birgitte, which is a discussion and defence of the Revelations (Reuelaciones) of St. Birgitta of Sweden (ca. 1303-1373). In legal proceedings at the Council of Basle (1431-1449), the Reuelaciones were accused of heresy, examined and defended. Among the defenders was Heymericus de Campo (1395-1460), who at that time was professor of theology at the University of Cologne. This dissertation examines the intersection of spiritual values and material life at Syon Abbey, a wealthy Brigittine double monastery in late medieval England. As an institution it was, paradoxically, directed primarily toward an evangelical goal, while being focused on contemplative women who were strictly enclosed. In this dissertation, I assert that this apparent contradiction was resolved through a high degree of collaboration between the abbey’s religious women and men.
