Abstract:
The ecological impact of windthrow disturbance on humipedons and soil microarthropod communities is examined in two areas of the Italian Alps (Val di Fassa and Cansiglio) five years after the Vaia Storm. The following soil coverage conditions were identified: herbaceous vegetation (G), decaying wood (W), no vegetation (B) in windthrow areas; and these were compared with conditions in adjacent undisturbed intact forests (IF) and, only in Val di Fassa, with permanent meadows (M). On the base of newly collected material, a new subspecies of the alpine endemic moth Sphaleroptera orientana Whitebread, 2006 (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) from the Pale di San Martino Group (Dolomites, Northern Italy) is described. Morphological characters of the adults and DNA barcode suggests the presence of allopatric populations of S. orientana in the South-eastern Alps, attributable to two distinct subspecies: S. o. suborientana Whitebread, 2006 in the Catinaccio, the Sella, and the Fanes group, and Julian Alps, and S. o. meridionalis subs. nov. known from the Pale of San Martino group. Three large series of witch trials took place in the Fassa Valley/Val di Fassa in 1573, 1627–1631 and 1642–1646. The sources documenting the first of these trials and its main protagonist Ursula Lombarda were discovered in 1910 by Hartmann Ammann in the diocesan archives of Bressanone/Brixen. They were presented to the general public in 1950, after Ammann’s death. According to the prince­bishop’s court the Ladin valleys, thanks to their peripheral location and linguistic peculiarities, called for founding a separate deanery. The vicar general who resided in Bressanone/Brixen was no longer able to meet the increasing demands.
