Full textThe topic of household preferences for forests is becoming increasingly important in urban planning strategies. The literature based on the hedonic price method for the evaluation of forest recreational services generally uses the accessibility to the nearest forest and considers recreational services as homogeneous. However, our hypothesis is that in urban and periurban areas, households may have preferences for the diversity of forest areas in their residential environment. Therefore, evaluations have to take into account the complementary impact of forest areas and thus estimate the overall forest environment and its diversity in terms of quality of recreational services. The aim of our first study is to measure the impact of proximity to forest recreational services on housing prices when using the nearest forest on the one hand and the global forest environment on the other hand, which includes the spatial heterogeneity of recreational quality. We highlight the importance of considering the forest environment in its diversity in economic evaluations in order to estimate the real recreational value of forests. In a second work, using the auction functions method, we question wether and how the socio-economic profile of households influences their preferences in terms of recreation of the forest environment. The results help to clarify household preferences around the issue of "nature in the city". They reveal heterogenous preferences for the forest environment and its recreational qualities, depending on the socio-professional category and the age of the buyer. Finally, in the third study, in the case of multi-site amenities, people can choose to visit different sites and at different frequencies. From a theoretical model we conciliate the spatial urban approach of Alonso with accessibility to multi-site amenity in the hedonic model of Rosen. We conclude that, when there is a preference for a multi-site amenity with heterogeneous quality levels, a wrong specification of the distance in hedonic models significantly impacts the amenity assessment

Full textIn humans and animals, odors guide behavior and motivate action. The hedonic value (that is the pleasantness) is the main olfactory dimension and is generally used to decide to approach the odor source or move away. While this attractiveness is shaped by experience, some unfamiliar odors are spontaneously attractive or repulsive. The pleasantness of an odor would be, at least in part, innate, and suggest a specific neural signature of the hedonic value of odors. The global aim of this thesis is to decipher neuronal mechanisms underlying the hedonic value of odors. After having selected odorants with various level of attraction (pleasant and unpleasant), we have deciphered the neural bases that underlie these behaviors. We first mapped (expression of Zif268) and then manipulated (optogenetic) the neuronal activity of the olfactory bulb in response to these odors, and have revealed a bulbar neural signature of the hedonic value of odors along the antero-posterior axis. Then, in order to analyze how the hedonic information was interpreted by the higher olfactory and associative areas, we developed a method allowing the registration of brain activity in a reference atlas, that ensure a fast, accurate and reliable mapping of this activity. Finally, by combining this method with behavioral, electrophysiological and pharmacological approaches, we have shown a role of the reward system in the coding of odor hedonics and that an odor can act as a reward, thus motivating behavior, approach and withdrawal

Full textIn France, the midafternoon snack is a frequent habit among children usually characterized by the consumption of fatty, sweet and high-energy-dense foods. If eating behaviours remain flexible and can evolve throughout the life, they are already strongly established during childhood. In this context, improve food habits in terms of midafternoon snack seem important. The thesis aim was therefore to assess the effectiveness of levers aimed at promoting healthy snack choices within mother-child dyads. A first experiment was conducted in order to assess the impact of a nutritional labelling system, the Nutri-Score, on the nutritional quality and on the liking of the snacks chosen within mother-child dyads. The results showed an improvement in the nutritional quality of midafternoon snacks chosen by the participants for themselves and for the other dyad member after labelling with the Nutri-Score. This improvement is accompanied by a decrease in the liking of the snacks chosen by children and mothers. A second experiment was conducted in order to assess the impact of a pleasure-based intervention conducted at home and mobilizing three dimensions of pleasure from eating (sensory, interpersonal and psychosocial) and on the nutritional quality of midafternoon snacks chosen in the laboratory in mother-child dyads. This intervention was also tested on different variables characterizing the nutritional composition of the midafternoon snack consumed at home by children. If the intervention did not improve the nutritional quality of the snacks chosen by the children and their mother in the laboratory, it reduced the energy content of snacks consumed at home by the children. This reduction would be due to a decrease in the quantities consumed. Results obtained in the context of this work could provide guidance for public authorities responsible for communication and recommendation on child nutrition

Full textChildhood maltreatment can lead to depressive states in adulthood. Neglect, abuse, and any form of early-life stress can disrupt brain development, affecting emotional balance into adulthood. Additionally, depression is often associated with disturbances in odor perception. Odors play a crucial role in many vital behaviors, such as eating, social interactions, and avoiding danger. Therefore, any alteration in olfactory perception, particularly of pleasant odors, may reduce daily pleasures and exacerbate depressive symptoms. In this context, my thesis aims to investigate how early-life stress affects the perception of pleasant odorants in adulthood, and seeks to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying these alterations. To do so, I used a murine model of early stress induced by limited nesting and bedding, which confirmed an alteration in emotional behavior in adulthood but also revealed a disturbance in the perception of pleasant odorants (STUDY 1). We then explored the mechanisms of this olfactory impairment by focusing first on the interneurons of the olfactory bulb, whose role in encoding the hedonic value of odors has been previously demonstrated. These interneurons, generated postnatally (P0-P1), are in their critical integration period during the early stress phase and are therefore particularly vulnerable. Our observations show that early stress alters the fine morphology of interneurons specifically responsive to pleasant odorants. Olfactory bulb interneurons are also the targets of adult neurogenesis. We demonstrated that the new neurons, although born long after the stress period, have altered survival and plasticity. All these disturbances lead to an overall modification of the neural activity of the olfactory bulb in response to pleasant odorants, disrupting the output signal of this structure. Two other brain structures involved in encoding the hedonic value of odorants, the olfactory tubercle and the ventral tegmental area, are also affected. These structures are part of the reward circuit and are particularly active during approach behavior toward pleasant odors. We revealed that their activity in response to pleasant odors is altered in animals subjected to early stress. Finally, the fact that pleasant odorants can induce motivated behavior, engaging the reward circuit, suggests dopamine release, a key molecule in this circuit. To directly study dopamine release in response to odors, I established the fiber photometry technique coupled with video signal analysis in the laboratory (STUDY 2). My initial analyses show an increase in dopamine in response to attractive odors compared to non-attractive odors. The analysis of the effects of early stress on this mechanism is currently ongoing. In conclusion, our results indicate that early stress modifies the neural substrates responsible for the perception of pleasant odors, which has implications for understanding resilience to anhedonia and for assessing the severity of depressive symptoms in individuals with a history of early stress

Full textThe current environmental and economic context implies a need to manage energy demand. In order to do this, understanding completely the determinants of energy demand is first required. Also, there is a need to find tools to reduce energy consumption. In this thesis, we are interested in the consequences of a household’s choice of location on energy consumption and on the role of the green value to promote the adoption of energy-efficient buildings by households. The first chapter analyzes an urban microeconomic model of residential choice of location and energy consumption. In order to complete this theoretical analysis, we estimate the energy demand of the residential sector. The second and third chapters study the green value and its role in the promotion of green buildings. In chapter 2, we present a meta-analysis of the literature estimating the green value. In chapter 3, we use a spatial hedonic model to estimate the residential green value for the urban area of Dijon. Finally, in the last chapter, we study the residential choice of households concerning the energy performance of their dwelling. To do so, we estimate the probability of households to live in an energy-efficient building or not. The results of these estimates and the results of the previous chapters are then mobilized to discuss the efficiency of the public policy used for managing energy demand
