This exploratory study presents a portrait of the social representations of the education of pre-university college teachers. It attempts to understand how the values and practices of teachers are linked to one another. To do this, it analyses these social representations in light of three spheres: the social representation of education within society (social sphere), that of the collegiate institution (institutional sphere) and that of rapport between student and teacher (individual sphere). Each of these spheres is described in reference to different dimensions of the social representation (cognitive, affective and behavioral). This study also examines the influence of two variables on the social representations that teachers have on education. It first looks at the influence of ideological orientation induced in the course of teachers’ study (or not) in pedagogy and then at the influence of the very subculture of the program being taught (Humanities or Natural Sciences).

Full textThis research is a content analysis around poverty, social exclusion and inequalities and its influence on the social participation of low-income people in the regions of Quebec and Chaudière-Appalaches. It focuses on the State’s discourse and particularly the one from the ministère du Travail, de l’Emploi et de la Solidarité sociale, responsible for the Act to Combat Poverty and Social Exclusion (Bill 112) and its action plans. I discuss the alteration of social assistance programmes under the neoliberal ideology; from a universal and inclusive social assistance to a categorized and meritocratic welfare based on employability. It is also about the popular discourse, therefore the social representations of the ‘poor’ and poverty, as well as the dynamics created with the State’s discourse and how they interact; making individuals responsible for their own socio-economic condition, without considering the structural mechanisms that lead to poverty.

Full textThe aim of this research is to study how Quebec sociology deals with the institutional measures for the integration of asylum seekers. The research was based on the observation that there are few studies on the integration of asylum seekers in Quebec sociology whereas the reflection on the matter is widely explored elsewhere. After analysing sociological texts on the topic, six themes have been proposed: the measures, the epistemological approach, the phenomenological approach, the comparative approach, the feminist approach and the critical approach. Economic measures are the most developed and they mostly concern job seeking. However, a few social, cultural and political measures do exist. As for the discourses on integration, there are differences on several levels. If at the Canadian federal level, integration refers to multiculturalism, in Quebec it deals with interculturalism, a compromise between the desire to preserve Quebec's cultural identity and the attachment to Canadian values of acceptance of the culture of the other. In the past, if the asylum seeker benefited from a positive aura with a tradition of welcoming the asylum seeker as a national value, he is now confronted with an arsenal of restrictive and dissuasive immigration measures that makes integration difficult for him. On the other hand, asylum seekers have their own perceptions and discourses on integration. The comparative approach made it possible to compare Quebec, Canadian, French and American integration models. In the past, the first comparisons of sociologists focused on French and American classical models. However, the importance of the phenomenon of immigration in these societies leaded them to find and propose other concepts in order to represent as much as possible this reality. The feminist approach shows the situation of intersectionality of women. The critical approach highlights discrimination in the process of integration and its measures which are mainly related to the issue of social integration.

Full textThis thesis explores the change of perspective of the Quebec government concerning the status of women, in connection with the transition from a welfare state to a neoliberal state. First of all, a brief historical portrait of the creation of the Ministry of the Status of Women (ministère de la Condition feminine) (1979) as well as the successive governments in Quebec is drawn. This illustrates the transformations that have taken place in the conduct of the affairs of the Quebec State. Indeed, this ministry was set up by René Lévesque’s Parti Québécois (1976), which was largely inspired by the welfare state model and later on, particularly under the government of Lucien Bouchard (1996), a shift was made towards a state inspired by neoliberal rationality. Using the method of critical discourse analysis, this thesis then identifies the manifestations of neoliberal rationality in the set of government action plans dealing with equality between the women and men produced by the ministry associated with the Status of Women from 1979 to 2016. The analysis is based on a conceptual framework at the core of which is neoliberalism and more specifically, the two dimensions of individual responsibility and entrepreneurial self. The results of the analysis show how the welfare state, interventionist, addresses inequalities between the women and the men as arising from a structural fact while the neoliberal, non-interventionist, state deals with the status of women as well as gender inequalities in an individualizing manner.

Full textThis master’s thesis reports on an arts-based action research implemented in the public space of Limoilou, a Quebec City neighborhood. In recent decades, major economic and social transformations have led to a gentrification process in Limoilou. However, unlike many other neighborhoods in contemporary Western cities which are going through similar processes, Limoilou is the scene of many civil and community activities, demonstrations and protests. Analyzing them highlights the commitment and agency of a community of new residents struggling for power over urban space. The aim of their struggles is to remain the initiators of the projects and to keep the power over the development of the Limoilou public space. Implemented with the residents of this community, the process of creating two projects (one artistic and the other one based on tactical urbanism) has made visible a common imaginary translated into collective action. In a critical theoretical perspective, our analysis also uncovered the effects of global structural dimensions on local action while demonstrating the community's creative adaptations to them. This research therefore proposes avenues for reflection to address new forms of urban public space initiatives. Keywords: Limoilou, Urban anthropology, Arts based action-research, Public space, Agency, Civic engagement, Public art, Tactical urban planning, Gentrification.

Full textThree major forms of inequality are interrelated in contemporary modalities of sharing responsibility for caring for people with disabilities: 1) the persistence of a gendered division of caregiving responsibilities and its consequences on the professional and economic trajectory of women; 2) the transfer of some of these tasks to female workers with precarious status; 3) lack of access to care for people with disabilities, especially for low-income older women, in the context of reduced availability of family members and limited services offered by the state. Based on the idea that the implementation of public policies is never the simple consequence of identifying a social problem, but that it implies a political reading of the challenge it faces (Jenson, 2008) or otherwise stated that it involves a particular way of representing the problem (diagnosis) and the solutions (prognosis) to be implemented (Bacchi, 2009, 2012; Verloo, 2007), this thesis aims to explore how certain discursive events that shape public policy have helped define the modalities of the share responsibility for caring for seniors with disabilities. The formulated hypothesis is that discourses carry elements that contribute to challenge or reinforce social relations creating inequalities between women and men. The speeches produced by different groups of actors during the Rochon Commission (1985–1988), the Clair Commission (2000) and the Consultations on the Autonomy Insurance Project (2013) were analyzed and compared according to a synchronic then diachronic perspective. This thesis suggests that the three discursive events under study led to different problematizations of the issue of shared responsibility for caring for older people with disabilities and that, within these discussions, there are spaces of reproduction and contestation of social relations of caring generating inequalities. The speeches heard thus helped to define the identity of the social groups involved in the care relationship. Older people have essentially been defined on the basis of their vulnerability, their loss of autonomy and according to a user-consumer figure. Caregivers have gradually emerged as a category and as a collective actor likely to raise public awareness on suffering and inequality (Cefaï, 2007) and to mobilize a political voice (Verloo, 2007). Female workers paid for caring have been the subject of discussion, but almost exclusively from the issue of their qualification/non-qualification to provide personal assistance services to elderly people living with a disability. Four narratives of shared responsibility for caring between the state, the market, the third sector, and the family emerge from discourse analysis: 1) Mixed Competitive Regulation; 2) Competitive Market Regulation; 3) Social-Statist Regulation; 4) Mixed State/Third Sector Regulation. Each of these narratives is carried by different alliances of actors and mobilizes different configurations of the problem definition, the solution to be adopted, the cares and identities as well as discursive postures regarding the sexual division of care work. In conclusion, three main conclusions emerge as to the reproduction and the contestation of social...
